Not sure where to begin. My father in law passed away today at the Meadow Green nursing and Rehab…read moreCenter in Waltham. My FIL was there for 5 years and his care was superb. The nurses and CNA in the Brooknoll unit were excellent. I literally felt that they loved him. He was always happy, clean and very well cared for. He just loved living there. I also watched how other residents were cared for and they were also well cared for and happy and to me that speaks volume. If i could give 20 stars i would.

Weekends are particularly bad. Staffing is inconsistent and many are portly trained. An example of this is that some CNAs pick up patients by hand for bed to wheelchair transfers instead of using a Hoyer lift. If they DO use the Hoyer, many times it's only one person when it is supposed to be two. The administration will tell you this never happens, but they are flat out lying as I have witnessed it. I have seen patients who are on oxygen not being reattached after a transfer. Once again, you can raise these issues with nursing staff or even in team care planning meetings, but they will tell you it's untrue. I actually stood with a nurse in front of a patient who did not have their oxygen cannula on tell me that the patient was on oxygen! You just can't make this stuff up. Many times, you cannot reach a loved one OR their unit on the telephone, the first because the aids don't set up residents who are not ambulatory or able to get to things, the second because they are short staffed and/or inattentive. Patients are not always provided access to call bells. Personal items left in drawers, etc. are treated with disregard. For example, one might find their items smeared with toothpaste because an aid shoved an open tube into a drawer after use. I have seen open moisturizer packets tossed into bedside drawers where they then get smeared all over personal belongings. One might find their limited storage space (drawers and such) inundated with towels, diapers, pads, wipes, etc. which get left by one aid and not used by the next. The more care a loved one requires, the sloppier it gets. The administration will take a position that patient reports are undependable and that what family reports isn't actually true. I've rated this place a 2 ONLY because it is sadly better than many other places. That said, the fact that what should be considered baseline is often not met is disgusting. It is apparent that supervision is minimal because the things I've mentioned, along with countless others, can be and have been observed repeatedly.

Still, there are others who can be very curt with the residents. When I visited my parent there, I witnessed some of this first-hand. I worried that if the aides behaved that way when I was there, how might they behave when I was not. My parent was not the easiest of residents. Could be very impatient and demanding. On some occasions though, particularly when they needed to use the bathroom, an aide may not arrive for 15-20 minutes. Often I assisted my parent before an accident occurred. I believe that part of the problem is that the staff is small, a situation made worse by the COVID19 virus, which saw many on staff need to take time off. Even before this, however, there were too many residents for each aide. I also suspect that the pay is low, as there is so much turnover. One final note: their response to the COVID19 virus was exemplary. Residents were confined to their rooms before other facilities in the area did so. My parent was tested twice for the virus (negative both times). Families were kept up to date by several letters from the president of MaristHill. All in all, I believe that my parent was fairly well-taken care of, given the ratio of staff to residents. My advice, though, is to tour several facilities before choosing one, and try to talk to the families of residents if at all possible. This can be difficult on a tour of the facility, but possible. Also, read up on the Massachusetts ratings for nursing homes. They can be found online. Good luck!

The facility is quiet and quite clean and pleasant. Luckily, Stinky got a room to himself even though it was a room for two patients. Wicked lucky! The nursing care was quite good and attentive for the most part. The nurse that worked during the day was very good, and am sorry, forgot her name. The nurses that worked during the evening shifts were awesome. Ed and Martin could not have been nicer and more attentive to the cranky old dude. The only slight downside was that a few of the aides were not all that great and a bit difficult, but most were ok. They did seem to work hard though. Stinky knows it is not the easiest job. They PT staff were very nice and were very good with their skills. The food was actually quite decent though and they seemed to want to please. That being said, Stinky would not want to spend another two weeks here if he didn't have to, but if he did have to he would put this at the top of the list of placement preferences.

Since their current president arrived several years ago, it has become a bottom-line business operation, consistent with her prior experience in the world of hedge fund-backed retirement care corporations. Today, safety takes a back seat here. Diversity is nearly completely absent among residents. Transparency in finances is lacking and leadership is arrogant and defensive. The one saving grace remains the staff who work with residents on a day-to-day basis. They remain caring, dedicated and thoughtful. But the community has become a commodity and the saddest part is that they continue to expand without addressing numerous substantial shortcomings.

I left a message at the corporate office for the executive Director's boss. (purposely not putting his name on this review... Yet ) He never returned my call. Maybe they think I'm somebody that will just lay down the phone which is the opposite of who I am, IMO I believe Benchmark is, a nice community compared to some of the competitors that are much pricier. They have a good mix of residents, RCA's, etc. the executive staff, I find nonresponsive and unable to accommodate accountability for their lack of actions. Somethings that I find important and don't really want to bring up specifics out here I feel are falling through the cracks and feel that it needs to be addressed, I tried going through the chain of command that has failed now I'll deter, hopefully some residence from moving in here and go someplace else because of the lack of effort from corporate. And then may be in the future. I could make a call to a place that would make them listen and respond probably within an hour. However, I'm curious to see if they read these reviews and possibly respond to them that's my hope.
