I can't remember the last time we stayed at a campground where nearly everyone was outside and enjoying the activities offered by the recreation area: swimming, boating, complimentary canoes, kayaks, volleyball courts and lawn games. The campground feels exceptionally safe, and well tended. You're guided to your campsite upon arrival and all the amenities you might need are available for purchase including firewood, ice, and laundromat facilities. While the spaces may be a little tight there's pretty view Of the lake to enjoy and a real old fashion neighborly type of vibe. Not an iPhone or electronic device to be seen! Everyone was out actually playing, doing things, and talking to each other. There's plenty of wildlife to be seen, and not to be disappointed we saw one of the largest freshwater turtles we ever seen in our life of visiting here. Campground offers fish cleaning facility and anything you need to wrap and prepare your fish for a tasty dinner at the campsite. We are fortunate to have found this campground and hope to return again in the future. Nearby bike paths offer plenty of recreation outside the campground as well. Proximity to downtown Is less than 10 minutes with plenty of restaurants, shopping, and sightseeing.

No issues with parking and we only ran into 3 people while hiking our 3.6 miles.

This review is mainly about The Lost 40. An ancient hardwood forest that was somehow missed or…read moreforgotten during the era of the lumber barons in the late 19th century. One theory is the winters were so severe the lumberjacks gave up and deserted the project. This saves a valuable piece of land for us to enjoy whether you are a tree hugger or not. The short trail is signed explaining the types of trees and foliage in the area. I believe in Minnesota less than 2% of forested land remains as hardwoods which covered the state up to the prairie. The area of the Chippewa has camping and not much in amenities as it's not a state park and is recommended for the serious rugged camper.

The campsite was not too far from the water, so we just pulled our kayaks on the beach overnight and we dragged our reclining lawn chairs out to the beach too. The paddling was fantastic -- especially as the water had waves (I love a little tiny bit of adventure to paddling around a lake and this one had some nice waves). There were a lot of people here but we really did feel secluded. I also love camping in national forests because its okay to burn any wood that is down on the ground, so we didn't need to buy firewood, I just collected a bunch of downed limbs and got to work snapping them down to burnable size. And, drive in just beautiful, as is everything on this property, talented artists involved in making anyone's stay the best. At night beautiful mini-lights decorate trees, plants, driveways, and even outside Rustic cabin's porch and under it, plus mini-lights at outdoor biffy! What more could one want ... I was married at Black Lantern last summer (2015) and I have so many good things to say I can't…read morepossibly say them all here. First and foremost, I've heard from an overwhelming number of guests how much they enjoyed the grounds and the beauty of the area, so much that they didn't mind the 4hr drive from the cities. The natural beauty of the area is emphasized here: native species surround you whether you are at the pavilion area, the campgrounds up around the loop, or even the open area of the RV park. There are also pretty little "hidden" places all over. Our photographers were thrilled about all the places to take photos- rock chairs, opennings in the woods, flowers planted here and there, sweet antique-looking benches, etc. The best part of Black Lantern though is the owner, Annie. She is just incredible. She was so thoughtful throughout the process and she was pretty much a wedding planner. She didn't mind talking to me about how weddings are put together and gave me contact info for decently priced vendors in the area. That was especially helpful as I am from Minneapolis and was contacting all the expensive vendors- oops. Annie took time to understand our style and vibe so that she could best help me plan an event that we wanted. She offered so much of her time before we even met to answer questions. She also has the uncanny ability to pop in at the right time- every time I needed her, she was there. She helped problem-solve for those things you don't plan on and offered a helping hand whenever it was needed. She chops all the wood and builds things, including amazing heart-shaped fires. What a badass woman! There was only one thing that was a disappointment at first- but then ended up being a blessing in disguise- we couldn't have our guests camp at the "campsites." Darn MN regulations. There isn't running water close enough to the loop to allow for campfires. Instead, we had all our guests camp in the RV park. It worked out wonderfully. This also allowed us to use one of the campsites as our ceremony site. Best decision we made. It couldn't have been a more perfect location for us. I didn't want to get married indoors, or even standing on cement. The clearing in the woods was large enough for 100 chairs and standing room for the other 60 people. The forest provided a breathtaking backdrop. Even a year later, when wedding-talk comes up, other people still bring up what an amazing venue Black Lantern is.

I'm a bit of a glamping kind of lady and the cabins at Cedar Shores are log homes away from home. Everything was clean and even the comforters were freshly laundered. Our family stayed in cabin #6 and it has a beautiful deck with a fantastic view and direct access to the beach. They supplied the water toys to include kayaks and canoes. The beach was cleaned every morning by Louis, one of the family proprietors. If we needed anything, Juanita or Louis was right there for us. They care about their guests and give their property TLC. We hope to spend many more weeks in late summer at Cedar Shores!

The facilities were spotless. The price was reasonable. The sunset view from our campsite was across a lovely lake. We were right across from the bathrooms, and it was surprisingly quiet. Everyone seemed to respect the quiet hours. The people running the campground were quite accommodating. They allowed us to park in a general area the next day and clean up after our ride. We didn't leave until 3:00, well past check out time. I highly recommend this campground. And don't miss the Akeley museum while you're in town. It's an easy walk from the campground.

First time visiting this park as we are on a quest to visit all MN State Parks…read more We pulled into the visitor center parking lot and experienced a torrential downpour with hail. We waited out the storm for 20-30 min then headed inside. The visitor center is very cabin-y. Nice and cozy with lots of display and educational opportunities. Bathrooms were spacious and clean. I bought some postcards in the gift shop and the person working there was so helpful with walking us through trails and maps. We walked the Ozawindib and Landmark trails plus, of course, seeing the Mississippi headwaters. The trails were in great shape, especially given the amount of rain that had just fallen. We were nearly alone on the two trails. The headwaters were was busy. There were two areas where a tree had fallen across the trail but we still could get around it. Keep in mind, the Wilderness Drive is one way on the West side which means you may have to go around the whole park again depending on your destination. We also had a bowl of chicken wild rice soup for lunch in the cafe at the north entrance. It was quite good.

We waited for an hour around 4pm since only six people can go up at a time. And I didn't even make it to the top because it was absolutely terrifying. I saw a lady take her dog up there and honestly props to her. Even on a fall weekend, there were a ton of sites available. I'm definitely coming back!!
