Modern Pastry - Inside of Cannoli with Ricotta Filling and Chocolate Chips ($5.50) - good! Shell isn't too crunchy. Very rich though.

Modern is a Boston institution and absolutely worth a visit. Their pastries are amazing. Their…read morecannoli menu is quite basic in comparison to other bakeries in the area, but they are the perfect flavor and crispy texture as they are filled fresh on the spot. I also loved the truffles, notably the dubai chocolate one. Just to note, it is cash only.

I agree with the many reviews recommending the cannolis here. The cannoli I tried was great ($5.50…read morewith chocolate chips)---the ricotta filling was rich but not overly so, and the shell had the perfect texture---I preferred it to those at Mike's. I also liked the rainbow cookies, though the chocolate coating could have been better quality. However, I also tried several other desserts that weren't as good: -Tiramisu ($5) - pretty average. I liked that it had a strong coffee flavor and wasn't overly sweet. -Cassatine cake (I think $6.50?) - an individual portion of their Cassata cake. The marzipan, together with the ricotta filling, made it very very sweet. -Macaroons ($23/lb) - I tried an original almond amaretti, as well as one with pignoli and a pistachio macaroon. The texture was nice and light, but they were way too sweet. Of the three I liked the pistachio the most, but it was still very sweet. -Parigina Cake/Paragina Cake ($5) - I didn't like this. It's composed of puff pastry, sponge cake, and a thin layer of custard. I found the flavor to be uninteresting, mostly just very sweet. Cash only. If you visit, I recommend sticking to the cannolis (and being prepared for a sugar high).

What a gem of a bakery in Somerville! Every dessert on display at this cozy, Palestinian-owned…read morebakery looked so scrumptious. We had such a hard time choosing and settled on the walnut baklava roll and the muska kataifi pisatchio. Everyone working there was so friendly and helpful and even with a line out the door, they were able to keep things moving smoothly. They also gave us small chai samples while we waited to be helped (the chai was spicy and not overly sweet). The baklava and kataifi were perfect -- no notes. Baklava had a great ratio of flaky pastry layers to walnuts. Each bite had the right about of crunch and nuttiness. The amount of syrup used was just right also. Kataifi struck a similarly great balance: a crunchy and sweet shredded wheat exterior rounded out by the richness of pistachios. I wish I could come here all the time and try everything. Definitely keeping this place bookmarked for any future trips to Boston.

My very first time to try Palestinian desserts, in this small but wonderful café titled "2023 Best…read moreNew Bakery" and "2024 Best Bakery" in "Best of Boston". Harissa: Sweet but not overwhelming, fragrant yet not greasy, it was what traditional desserts supposed to be. And what I appreciate most is its muffin-like moist and smooth texture. Baklava Rolls / Walnut: Crispy on the outside, while sugary and nutty fragrant on the inside. The aroma of cinnamon and cardamom were mild and easy to accept. It kind of reminded me of the Almond Roca candy. To emphasize, the service was unexpectedly considerate. As a new customer, I simply asked the assistant for recommendations, and she offered me samples of 4 kinds of desserts and a cup of Yafa Chai Karak to try. Although it was hard to get accustomed to the spices, I still appreciate the kindness.
