Older woman behind counter Super rude, and just seemed to hate her job and customers. Also half the shelves were empty on a Saturday afternoon. The woman behind the counter rolled her eye and muttered under her breath when I asked her if they took credit cards (just being polite in case they didn't and we couldn't pay). Weird vibe in there. M&M cookies were hard as rocks and the half moons were stale. Disappointing at best. Go in if you want rude service and bad pastries. Ordered a strawberry shortcake for my sister's birthday in September 2023. It ended up being a white rum cake with layers of frosting and a few slices of strawberries. It was not edible. I also questioned the quality of ingredients. I called the owner and talked to him about it and he said he couldn't refund me because the credit card charge already went through but I could come in and he could give me cash back. He also offered to bake me another cake but it was too late and not needed. I don't understand the good reviews. read more

Stopped in on a Friday afternoon as we were driving by and the young lady behind the counter could not be friendlier or more helpful. A friend and I decided to try the bismark, upside down cassata, the puff pastry filled with whipped cream and apple and some Italian cookies...not all in one sitting. Bismark pastry tasted stale, cream a little sweeter than we preferred. Cassata also tasted a bit stale and was very sweet even without the cream on top which we both scraped off because it was way too sweet, alone, much less eating it with the cassata. The cream in the bismark was different from the cream on top of the cassata (which seemed more like a butter cream vs whipped cream). Haven't tried the apple puff pastry yet, saving it for tomorrow but anticipate it also being quite sweet. Took a bite of a pistachio macaroon and it was also very sweet. 5 for friendliness and service 3 for pastries (per our tastes) read more

My roommate surprised me with a birthday cake from Arthur's on my birthday and it was seriously the best birthday surprise. I LOVE CARROT CAKE, and this cake was delicious - it's in the fridge now and definitely a special treat thing bc the frosting is A LOT (the cake is def like 70% frosting , 30% cake kind of), it's very sweet but a bit on never hurt nobody. So I'm going to start this off saying I love Arthur's. What I got today is embarrassing and downright gross. I left work today with the dream of eating a tiramisu and cannoli after dinner. I ate my tasty dinner of stuffing and turkey left over from christmas. Once I was done I brought out my dessert to eat. I started eating the tiramisu and noticed something tasted weird. I examined the dessert and noticed there was mold on the bottom! And to think I probably ate some of it made me sick! This is the first time this has happened (that I know of) here and I now will bring my buisness to Modern pastry or Mike's! Very upsetting! read more

I came here to pick up some Halloween cookies, and ended up bringing a whole Boston creme pie for $12.99. Yum. After reading the reviews on their canolis, I came here to get 6 ricotta cannolis ($3 each) for a friend's birthday. While the lady behind the counter was filling the cannolis, I saw the ricotta pies. I was told they were made the same day. Now I had to try. The pastries were refrigerated immediately after I got home and were served 3 hours later. The canolis were delicious with silky ricotta which the bakers strained twice. The shells were crispy. A perfect combination though a tad too sweet. The ricotta pie ($13) stole the show. The pie was creamy, eggy, and just the right sweetness. IMO is better than Modern Pastry. I served the pastries without taking photos first. Promise to take pictures the next time I go back for more. These photos are the cookies and other pastries I will need to try later. read more

The best lobster tail I have ever had! The crispness of the shell was unbelievable. We ended up here unexpectedly after Modern Pastry on Salem Street provided a terrible customer service experience. We couldn't have strolled into a more perfect experience than at Arthur's. I got a chocolate cake with strawberries and buttermilk cream inside. I don't have any photos because we ate it so quickly! But it was amazing. Ahhh yet another blast from my Meffa past!!! As a kid we used to call this part of Main Street "Bakery Row" because there were a bunch of authentic Italian pastry shops. This past summer his mom came home for the season from Florida so we had a lot of homestyle Italian dinners at her place with the family. What's a poor Irish girl to do but bring the pastry!!! The cannoli are delicious, the ricotta mixture is perfect and the shells are nice and crunchy. The kiddos loooooove the chocolate whipped cream cake and as always I'm a total fan of the italian cookies. The other pastry are great too, the lobster tails (when you can get em) are yummie with a mixture of whipped cream, ricotta and yellow cream as a filling. Best sfogliatelle I've had in Boston. Came in on a Tuesday (hey, I'm a grad student, give me a break) and asked for a box of pastries. They didn't have any cannoli or sfogliatelle though, since they only make them on the weekend. Pastries were all good, eclairs a big enough hit, but I hadn't gotten my satisfaction. I want to pause here and say that my reference set for sfogliatelle is Mike's, Modern, Lyndells and Patsy's. (Mike's is the best among those four.) My dad's friends always ordered a box of them when they got Italian, since there's nothing quite like them. I've eaten them when I lived in NYC, in Philadelphia, and on the west coast. When I requested one, the guy asked if I was Italian, because he was surprised at my comfortable pronunciation. I know me some sfogliatelle. A few weekends later I got the craving again and dropped in. These ones are crispy, delicate, golden tinged, with a sweet chewy ricotta filling so packed with candied fruit and nutmeg it took on an orange hue. The cannoli are excellent as well, small but not too small, with a crackly shell shattering to pieces. What are you waiting for? Go get some!! read more

Cannoli filling is a bit sweeter than I like but very good. The shells are softer and a bit abnormal for Boston cannoli. They're more crumbly and likely to leave residual in your molars. If they used good shells, it'd be a 4/5. Whoopie pies are good but too sweet for me. Nice people but a bit slow. read more

Four stars for the pastry, two stars for the service. The former is great--delicious Italian staples like napoleons, cannoli, etc. Personally I'm a fan of the almond paste cookies: simple, but delicious flavor and texture. This is a real-deal, no-frills Italian bakery: the emphasis is on taste rather than on looks. That is to say that other bakeries may offer more beautiful or visually impressive pastries or may cater to tourists, but what Arthur's make lack in elegance or novelty it makes up for in simple goodness. The service, on the other hand, is hit or miss. I've had great, attentive service in here before. I've also been in here when the woman working the counter walked away (with a somewhat rude manner) to take a phone call in the back and never returned. After waiting about three minutes for her to come back, I walked out. I was sorry to not get my cookies but I was not about to pay for such bad service. A third time I came in here and got a lecture from the man behind the counter about how/why their cookies are superior to other bakeries'--I think he was trying to be friendly and share his pride in his product, but his tone was borderline hostile and put me off. Call it Medford local color, I guess? Anyway, great stuff but you never really know what type of experience you're in for when you come here. read more

I don't know whether to give this place 3 or 4 stars, but they're getting 4 stars for having an excellently decadent chocolate cake - chocolate cake with chocolate mousse and chocolate ganache and just enough chocolate frosting to keep it all together. I've also gotten holiday sugar cookies and cupcakes from here and they're good, but not my favorite, however it's an excellent place to stop in if you're looking for a last minute gift wrapped pastry presentation to take to a party.
