Benny Adem has been THE Northern California grooming parlor I've been searching for! I used to live in Los Angeles and was accustomed to having some of the best cuts I've experienced. Once I moved to the Bay Area I spent several years of searching for the Northern California equivalent. I am happy to report that since my very first visit, Benny Adem became THAT place for me. I scheduled an appointment online a couple of before my visit, when I first got to the shop Qur'an & Yusef (the shop owner) introduced themselves. Qur'an took my coat , sat me on the chair and began asking me about what I wanted. The shop is clean, the Conversations are respectful and polite, and the barbers are skilled. It may be an obvious statement but in today's grooming parlor environment it needs to be said: Benny Adem is a professionally run Customer-oriented business; and it shows. From the attention to detail that I receive every time I return, to the hot, mint-scented towel wraps and face massage I get before my shave. The amount of care and attention each customer receives is what distinguishes Benny Adem from your average grooming parlor. My only gripe is that sometimes they forget to do the face massage, it's a small and forgivable oversight given everything else that's included in the standard cut. All-in-all Benny Adem has become the Bay Area grooming parlor that's made me forget all about Los Angeles. I truly look forward to every visit and I'm excited to watch how Benny Adem sets the pace for the grooming industry in the Bay Area. I've known Yusef and Quran for almost a year now. Yusef, Quran, and Terrell are all phenomenal barbers and will take their time to get every detail right. I've never been upset after a cut and have left every cut feeling refreshed by meaningful conversation and the best fade in the Bay Area. My current barber is out of town on vacation and I was in desperate need of a barber super last minute because I am leaving for NY Thursday. That gave me three days to hopefully get an appointment to get my hair cut. I looked up Oakland barbers on Instagram and found some amazing pictures of Qurans work. Benny Adem is great. I work in Downtown Oakland close to this shop and noticed the stylish exterior when it opened, and thought it looked kinda high-end. And the quality certainly is - but with rates that are very competitive with comparable cuts in Oakland. Yusef hooked me up with a french crop, giving me a fade with some length left on the top - and not an undercut (this has gotten lost in translation in the past with other barbers). Listened, asked questions, then gave me one of the best haircuts I've had, for real. This shop is run by two thoughtful guys who obviously take their craft really seriously. His dexterity across his equipment is also worthy of high regard. He switches between the clippers, scissors, and straight edge blade effortlessly. Best of all, he is dedicated to his community. This is demonstrated through his growing community library, meant to appeal to all ages who care to pick up a book during their cut. Bring a book over 100 pages and he will knock off $5 from your bill. The space itself is a hidden oasis. Along the walls are pieces of work from local artists, which makes me feel more connected to my Oakland neighborhood. The anesthetic and simplicity of the place also comes of confident, but not pretentious. You can tell he puts thought into what he does and how he creates an experience for his customers. The icing on the cake is how Yusef incorporates aromatics and additional sensory inputs into his work. From the lavender scented water he uses to start off your cut, to the warm towel that proceeds and proceeds a shave, he puts every effort into making you feel relaxed and comfortable. I work a few blocks away from Benny Adem and decided to spontaneously get a trim after my shift. I'm gonna be honest and say that I chose this spot because it was one of few in the area that was open past 6, but I'm incredibly happy that I did. I walked in at 6pm, an hour before closing, and was warmly greeted by the staff. I had the pleasure of being serviced by Sam, who has only been working there for around a month. He was incredibly friendly and made easy, casual conversation that didn't feel forced or impersonal. He made sure to ask for confirmation on his next move before buzzing away parts here or boxing out parts there, and he followed what I asked for to a T, even when I changed my mind mid cut. I've always been DIY or die with my hair since I was 12, this being only the second time I've gone to a professional in the past ten years. My days of holding up three different mirrors and clippers in my bathroom at 1am are over, because this is going to be my new spot for hair. As we were wrapping up, Sam said, "I want to bring back professionalism to the barbershop. I mean, we used to also be doctors back in the day, and I think we should still have that same care today." I've taken my son here a few other times and he's gotten great service by Bryce but when I tried to book the other day Bryce's name wasn't on the website so I checked out the Instagram pages of the other barbers and ended up booking with Samuel based on his skills and availability. Anyway I booked my son's appointment for 3:00pm, walked in about 5 minutes prior to the appointment and sat down to wait. But I kept waiting and waiting and waiting (all while being subjected to vulgar, explicit, sexually charged music being blasted through the shop's speakers) until 3:25pm when he told me he was going to clean up and be right with us. No apologies for being late or anything. So I asked him how long he thought the cut would take because I had a nail appointment at 3:45pm he didn't say but asked where the salon was and offered to walk my son over after he was done. I didn't know him from a can of paint so uh no thank you. I was able to change my nail appointment to 4:15 and told him. Still no apologies for any inconvenience or anything. All the while, we're still sitting there still listening to this music, at least my son was sort of distracted by playing games on my phone. There was one particularly disturbing song that came on and had been playing for a minute or so and everyone was jamming to it until a white woman walked in then the one of the barbers said "this is an after hours song" and changed it to another rap song that still featured explicit language but wasn't as bad as this one. My thing is they didn't realize that the song(s) was inappropriate when me and my son were in there. Anyway the cut was cool but having to wait almost 30 minutes after my scheduled appointment time with no apologies or accommodations in addition to that vulgar music definitely deemed a 2 start review in my opinion. I wish I hadn't prepaid but It forced me to when I booked online because he wouldn't have gotten a tip from me! The person who I'm assuming is the owner because he was the only person who used to greet me wasn't around, it looked like he was doing a photo shoot in the back but maybe he'll see this message here. Like I said they cut hair well but his was a very uncomfortable, upsetting experience to me. Customer service and common sense are clearly lacking here. I'd been searching on yelp for a good haircut for quite a bit, and I actually almost went to People's Barbershop, thank god they couldn't see me. I called Benny's ahead of time to see if they'd have a seat for me short notice since they were closing soon at the time, (5pm Sat) he said they would and asked me for my name. When I walked into Benny's I was welcomed in and sat down by Bryce. The atmosphere was very welcoming and comfortable, and not pretentious and snobby like other barbershop's. *Cough*People's*Cough* As for the cut, Bryce seemed to understand exactly what I wanted. He kept me updated and got my input throughout the entire cut. It was exactly what I wanted at a much more afforadable price than People's. I love the name also, Bani Adam is arabic for the tribe of adam's descendants (all of humanity). Sef and his staff really understand hair, growing patterns and style. First time visiting this spot on Saturday - my sons' barber Qur An just started working here so we had to follow him! He is amazing! My boys (17 and 13) love his work and he is a sweetheart. I was really impressed with this place. I've taken my boys to one other barber shop in Dublin where it's obnoxiously loud, crowded, the wait it ridiculous, the conversation is a lot of times inappropriate for children and the barbers show favoritism - even if you are given an appointment or are there right when it opens and one of the barbers' friends walks in after you, you get bumped. THIS spot is the complete OPPOSITE of that. It's very spacious, professional, a lot of comfortable seating, clean and not crowded at all for a Saturday which surprised me and all the barbers were very friendly, low key and about their business.
