I had a solid experience at Dax Lee's Barber & Apothecary. Booking was smooth - I scheduled my appointment about 5 days in advance. Unfortunately, it got canceled the day of, but these things happen. I was able to quickly rebook with another barber, Sam. Sam was great! Super easy to talk to, and he did a great job with my cut. I have short Asian hair so it's always a bit tricky finding a good haircut place. I also appreciated that the pricing here is based on time and technique rather than gender. My haircut took around 40 minutes and cost about $50 at the time of this review, which felt fair for the experience and quality. Parking seems to be entirely (paid) street parking, but the shop is walkable from the 19th Street BART station. read more

Literally the best barbershop around. Been coming here for almost 10 years (since before even the high rises came in across the street and there was still Coloso coffee next door.) Dan has been my barber since day one and he's an all around great dude who's craft is second to none. He's created an amazing experience across all of his shops and has stacked up an incredible team. The place is great and the staff is very nice and friendly, no complaints about them at all! What throws me off here is the fact that you pay 50$ (tip not included) for a 30 minute only haircut, that's how it's marketed on the website upon booking so I was aware of that at first. I feel like 30 minutes was not enough to achieve the level of precision most haircuts need, which left the experience itself feeling sort of sloppy and rushed to me. I usually go to barbers that charge the same price but they would usually stay with me for a little longer and work on the cut with more attention to detail, which is what you would expect out of an almost 60$ haircut. Overall I'd say just go to a Supercuts and pay half of the price, the quality and finish will most likely be the same, which is a bummer after all. read more

I took my 8 year old daughter Vivi to Dax Lee's because after sporting the half-shaved, half long look for a few months, she's been wanting to go even shorter. Scheduling was very easy online, and I went with the person first-available on the day we could go, which happened to be Melissa. The hype in our household was very real on the big day. We walked on over to the shop and were greeted by everyone and welcomed into one of the best-smelling places ever. Melissa was really sweet to my kid, and very patient and easy about Vivi telling her she was nervous about the "loud buzzers" and "tickling" sensation. This barbershop is super rad. I love that they have awesome products that they use on people and also sell there. A bunch of my trans friends go here and feel super comfortable and safe which is super important. All the staff are kind, knowledgeable and each have their own style and flair. I have only accompanied people here but the vibe is great and comfortable which is not always the case at barbershops. They would get 5 stars but parking is hella hard. Not their fault, just the nature of downtown Oakland. I often drop off my friends and then circle the block a few times and catch them at the tail end of their cut. read more

sprang for the apprentice haircut bc 1. lower cost and 2. wanted to check out what the "lower level" barbers look like. it was a bit different than what i was expecting. by the time i had finished, the barber next to me finished THREE customers. my haircut including wait time took 1.5 hours... and all i needed was a simple fade and a trim off the top. this usually takes no more than 25 min. i get it, theyre training to be a barber and theyre learning etc, but man, 30 mins, and he was still doing the sides of my head and hadnt even started on the top yet. description had said with head barber supervision, so i thought after an hour, they'd have noticed i was STILL there and jumped in or something but nope. any time i asked for adjustments, he barely cut any additional hair and so i just gave up and stop asking for fixes. i just wanted to get out of there bc i was already late for my meetings and ended up just fixing it myself at home. advice: spring for the normal barbers if you dont have 1.5 hours to kill on the apprentice ones. the cuts looked good from the customers i observed but most likely, i wouldnt come back. i only gave this an extra star bc the dude was nice. again, i kinda knew what i was signing up for, but this was way more unbearable than i expected read more

This is one of those default barbershops that are mediocre at their very best and bad in general. Went to Tony this time which was clearly a mistake -- asking for a low fade yielded a cut where my head was buzzed around to be nearly flat on the sides and back with the trimmer, rounding up the top upward (I honestly don't think Tony knew what a "low fade" even is). What I got makes my head look like an egg with a bunch of hair sticking up in the middle (see photo). The whole cut took maybe 10-12 minutes (appointments are supposed to be 30), was done nearly entirely with a trimmer (however, Tony graciously demonstrated his immense barbering skill at the end by touching the scissors for about a second), no product was put into my hair or even offered. Again, just very lazy, default work. If you do have to come here, Erin is a decent barber who at least tries. read more

Just be warned, parking anywhere near this business is super difficult. I arrived at 11:45, and it took me nearly 25 minutes to find parking. In addition, they are very rigid about their "10 minute grace period". I had a noon appointment, arrived at 12:11 and they turned me away even though I told them I was having difficulty finding parking. Erin Flith is fantastic. She does a great job with my hair, but the shop only gives you 30 mins, so the whole experience feels a bit rushed. They have some other barbers there that aren't nearly as good though, so be careful who you get. read more

I literally just walked in to see if anyone had time to fix the back of my hair which I had recently been butchered. 2 minutes later I ended up in Tony's chair and he did his thing.
