The People's Barber? Right...if your people are tech bros, hipsters or hills moms bringing their kids in for $$$$ cuts. The stylists/barbers seem fine, but you can get the same cut and support a small locally owned shop for better service and price. I used to treat my kid to an occasional cut here back when Luis used to work here and the prices were better. He was great! He listened, asked questions and just seemed genuine. He was such a light that I was able to see through the insufferable dense fog of hipster pretension that fills this space. I took my kid in a couple days back. An appointment was coldly made. I had to redirect the stylist several times and he almost left my kid with this weird mullet like thing that looked nothing like the pic I showed. Sure, the texture of my kid's hair is different from the pic, but he didn't ask any questions or point out how that could be problematic (and to be real, the cut could have been possible ). Then we opted for a shorter cut. The stylist was responsive and I could tell that he wanted us to be happy. He seemed to rush through and he took 40 minutes from start to finish including the redos. Finally we checked out with an acceptable cut that my kid was happy with. When I go to check out, it turns out that this all comes out to a full price adult haircut! This didn't seem right. Still, I paid and tipped the full amount. When I came home and looked at the website, the full haircut was supposed to come with shampoo/condition, beverage, hot towel and all the usual stuff that everyone else who paid full price get. My kid didn't get no organic juice, and mama wasn't offered any whiskey. What we got was an average kid's cut. I would love for the price to be adjusted so that's what I pay, stylist can keep the full tip amount because I'm not even sure that he knew it wasn't a kid's cut. I called and asked for that, and they offered to give me five freaking dollars. So now, I will rage post this review everywhere and get over it. read more

Dane is absolutely amazing! Walked in here about 4 months ago and have been driving back from the Fremont area ever since. I go with a mid-high Fade and Dane is a pro at her craft. She always takes her time and utilizes the full hour to touch things up and make sure I walk out feeling great. The beer/whiskey/coffee and ambient vibe is a huge plus. My son has had really mixed experiences here to say the least. Great cuts from Amanda, who he also really likes. She has been great to consult with and gets what he's looking for. Unfortunately, Amanda had to cancel yesterday and we scheduled with Dane. He showed her a picture of what he wanted and the cut is not only badly done and uneven (plus way too short in the back especially) it looked nothing like the picture. She had no idea how to give him the cut he wanted, afterwards explaining that he has different hair texture from the person in the picture, etc. But he's gotten a great cut he really liked from Amanda with the same picture. I'm only giving two stars because I used to come here (and the Polk SF location) several years ago and typically had great cuts and experiences. But yesterday I got literally the worst cut of my adult life from Rachelle. Not only did she not say a single word to me the entire time I was in the chair, she butchered my hair so bad I can barely even make it look decent no matter how I style it. The cut was listed as a 'master barber cut' - now, I'm not sure what it takes to be considered a master barber at Peoples, but I've gotten better $20 cuts than she gave. One side of my fade has hella long hair out at the top, lookin like a muppet. The other side is fine. When I push all the hair straight up, it is literally the most uneven cut ever. I've had my barbers use the texture scissors every time and this isn't the scissors, it's simply a lazy barber not cutting the hair well. My hair (styled when I came in) goes forward with a flip in front. Some reason, she thought it would be good to cut the front shorter than the rest of the hair, by like half an inch. So at best it looks like a shitty flat top. Not only that but on one side she didn't even cut it even and I have a nice spike sticking out the side a half inch longer then the rest of the front. Clearly she doesn't enjoy what she does, since she got told she had another walk-in after me and she sounded annoyed when asked 'is it that kid' and when told no, she sighed heavily like she hated her job. Maybe don't cut hair if you don't like it? Unfortunately, I had to go with her because she was the only one with an open schedule (red flag) and I scheduled last minute since I had some canceled meetings on my one day into the office this week. Thought it would be nice to go back to Peoples since I'd gone to that location for the two years I lived in Oakland/Emeryville before I moved to LA. At $60, this shit is way over priced. Even in LA I'd get a rinse, shampoo and style afterwards for the same price or less. read more

Had a truly awful experience getting my haircut here yesterday that was the final straw. I initially started seeing stephany at this shop and she was so amazing! Never left with a bad taste in my mouth from bad service or cut and she was always so nice and professional. Unfortunately my schedule changed and I needed to go on mondays when she wasn't available so I switched barbers to Toni. Terrible mistake. The quality of her haircuts was ok, nothing great or horrible. But she offers terrible service and is often gruff and very unprofessional. She's rushed though pretty much every haircut I've ever gotten from her, and a large portion of my cut time is usually spent with her wandering off and hanging out with her friends for minutes at a time. Paying $65 plus tip for 15 minutes or less of active work is completely ridiculous. They also don't have descriptions of the cuts online so I booked a fade for $55 because my haircut is a fade but apparently that was wrong because the top of my head is also getting cut (seriously?!) and instead I should be paying $65 for a rushed 15 minute haircut and unprofessional attitude. If the option was to change it and charge me the extra 10 or give me the absolutely shitty experience I had I definitely would've preferred it to be changed. Yesterday for example I had an appointment booked for 3pm. She came in at 3:04 and I sat down at 3:05. I got back to my car and checked my watch and it was 3:20, and she had spent 5 minutes goofing off with her friend that had wandered in. I truly have never seen another barber act so unprofessionally every time I come in. I am paying you for a service, you're not doing me a favor. My sideburns are uneven, and she couldn't be bothered to respond when I said goodbye to her, or even blow dry excess hair off me or apply product when the cut was done. I had to go into a restaurant bathroom after and wash my face because it was absolutely covered in large locks of hair. I'm done with this shop, but please go see any of the other wonderful barbers here! read more

I got a cut from Noe, nice guy but I would have to say overall cut I'm giving him a 4 out of 10. Conversation was a 4 out of 10. Cleanliness 10 out of 10. He was punctual however when he was done with the cut hands me a mirror to check out the cut and I asked for him to fade out the dark lines on the back of my head and he tried getting rid of them however he didn't do much to help the cut. He had mentioned he's been a licensed professional for about 6 years now so I don't get why he wouldn't be able to get the fade crispier than this. I booked an appointment with Toni and was HIGHLY disappointed. It was my first scissor cut in a long time and they did a lousy job. I booked a cut and beard trim for $90 and was in the chair for about 15 - 20 minutes tops. They spent less than a minute trimming my beard, didn't offer to or trim my eyebrows, and overall left me with a bad haircut. I went two days later to another barber and now have a great haircut. Problem was it cost me the $90 to get a less-than good haircut/beard trim from People's Barber Shop AND the cost of another barber shop visit. All in all, if you want a cut/beard trim from Toni, look elsewhere. read more

I asked if they had any walk ins and told them I could be there in 10-15 minutes. The receptionist told me it was good to come and it would be okay. I was there 14 minutes on the dot. He proceeded to tell me it was a 10 minute wait policy with an attitude and said I was late and they couldn't accept me. Should've just told me instead if wasting my time. I'm queer, so I usually go off of recommendations from friends rather than reviews to make sure if I come in with my gay self I won't have a rough time, but People's is very obvious in making the shop a safe & comfortable place for everyone. My barber, Daisy, is a personal recommendation: she's such a sweetheart and convinced me to stick through the awkward phase of growing out a buzz, which is a herculean task when you're impulsive and have clippers at home. This review is for my boyfriend's experience. This is the first time I went to this barbershop, first the person checking me in did not greet me, I said I had an appt. Then he picked up the phone and wasn't sure if I was checked in because he did not confirm that it was done so I just sat done since he was still on the phone. A few people came in and checked in, so I confirmed with another person. I walked to the counter and waited to speak with the woman, another customer came in and she totally ignored me, don't know if she was being racist because I was the only Asian person in the shop. After I spoke with her with an awkward silence. I sat down to wait for Michael. I told him I wanted to fade and keep my Mohawk and he literally just line me up all the way. My partner recommended I come here so I made an appointment for my autistic sister and my mother. My sister needs someone who can be gentle, kind, and patient when cutting her hair. On this day, I was kinda frazzled so, clearly, I was in need of kindness and patience, too! Daisy had the magic. I scheduled back-to-back appts with Daisy. She was welcoming and warm from the get. We showed her pictures of the short natural styles for both my sister and my mother. The care with which Daisy cut my sister's hair was so evident; my sister was able to sit comfortably and was not agitated. My sister doesn't always sit calmly for haircuts, but she was able to do so with Daisy .Daisy worked well with my mother, too, chatting and checking in with her as she cut. Both my sister and my mother looked great! Overall, Daisy was marvelous. She listened to our requests and had great suggestions about how to best maintain the styles my family members received. Would we return to her? Yerrrrrp! Daisy gets ALL the stars! As far as the shop, it has a relaxed, easy energy. This afternoon was my first and tomorrow will be my last time I step into this barber. I don't know what happened but I had the worst haircut ever, when I got home and had a shower a could see the haircut and it's all uneven, on the top, on my right side it is ok but on the left side the fade it's horrible, it looks like i had a cooking pot on My head and was cut with a knife.
