CATASTROPHE in Riverdale. This business was sold along with the name. Used to be a dependable place for meats and deli sandwiches, vegetables and prepared foods. Completely changed. I just paid 7.50 USD for 2 slices of turkey lettuce and tomato - tasteless (toasted- nit requested). The steaks and chopped meat are tasteless. Fresh food is not fresh (yogurt parfait /berries). This was a thriving business that fed the neighborhood. Not a reputable market any longer. The one star is for the awesome cashiers. read more

Despite the freezing weather, Ben's offers a delivery service to customers for a fee of $10 plus tip. The customer calls in the morning before noon with a list of the items wanted.This service is not available on Sundays. The staff makes every effort to fill the order. read more

The original Ben's had a great meat dept. The owner was a Butcher. They had the best meat department around. They sold Bell & Evan's chickens, they are the best. The steaks were great. Anna ran a great Deli. The New Ben's has an AWFUL meat dept. Not much of a selection. Clearly the new owner is Not a butcher. They got rid of most of the staff from the original Ben's, that was a mistake. Everything is Extremely expensive. The selection is not good. Now it's just like any other small grocer. I love going to Ben's Market whenever I'm visiting my brother in Spuyten Duyvil. It's an easy walk and the staff are always friendly. I love grabbing a breakfast sandwich - sausage, egg and cheese on a croissant. You'll have to grab the croissant from the front near the register. Anna makes the best sandwiches. She doesn't know me by name but I think she always remembers me when she sees me. I forget how affordable it is to eat in the Bronx. You could easily spend $10 and have plenty of snacks for your day. read more

Ben's Market is convenient, and was the neighborhood mainstay during the pandemic. Their prices have increased because all prices have increased. The staff remains pretty much the same and are helpful. Their foods, prepared in their own kitchen, are tasty and well seasoned. They have a larger selection of prepared meals for the weekend. Love their egg salad, chicken salad and tuna. If they have seafood salad, grab it! They make delicious sandwiches to order. Try them, the NYFD shops here regularly. read more

I ordered the 1/2 duck with orange cranberry sauce and mashed potatoes. It was less than 1/4 of an undernourished fowl and a scoop of mashed taters. I should have known it was not what was advertised as ducks in Chinatown go for at least $30 each. The manager said she had been there for 20 years and had no complaints. I will not patronize this unpleasant store again. This afternoon, I was on a slow-moving line to purchase milk. Since I only saw one person checking out the long line-up of folks at the register, I suggested that they could add another clerk. I was met by the rude worker (owner?) with two words - "Shut up." I believe the other customers in front and behind me were equally shocked. I understand the patience of both patrons and workers can be tried toward the end of a long day, but his retort to my potentially helpful suggestion was beyond discourteous and off-putting. Having shopped with Ben's since their 231St. location, I trek to the new location on Knoll's Crescent. The difference in service, cleanliness and civility are duly noted. I'm sorry to say, I liked the 231st Street store much better. Better employees, better service, much cleaner store. Ben's might want to steam clean their food displays. Hidden deep in Riverdale this market has some great deals. The store is very small and the isles are tight, but they are stocked full of most things you would need. For those that say the workers aren't friendly I would suggest you be the friendly good shopper first, then see how they respond . I found them responsive to receiving a kind word. We'll be back to try some of their prepared dishes, I've been told they are good. Not in the heart of town, but worth a try. They do have a small parking lot if you wish to drive. read more

More than your basic bodega, Ben's in an oasis in the desert. They have a sushi chef that churns out fresh sushi all day long. I had no idea that there was such a large call for sushi in Spuyten Dyvuil. There is also a deli counter with fresh baked goods as well as a frozen food section with vegetarian and kosher items, a veggie and fruit area with organic choices. I must admit, this store captures me by the mere name alone. How can you not want to shop at a place named after some dude which also has the words "meat-o-mat" affixed to the outside signage? read more

After multiple instances of rudeness from the cashiers at Ben's, I am finally writing a review. This morning, the woman at the register couldn't even respond to my greeting (this seems to be the norm there), and "please" or "thank you" don't seem to be in the vocabulary of most of the cashiers there. This morning she walked away before even giving me the receipt, and of course no thank you. And when I notice that I have been over charged, I return and she does not even acknowledge my greeting, or look at me, let alone apologize for her mistake. Everyone makes mistakes, occasionally, but not to even say a quick "sorry", I find amazing! In the past I've experienced repeated hostility from one young man there (as have others that I have spoken to). Unsure why, as he and I have never had words or anything. He just seems to be openly hostile to customers in general. And then there was the woman who mocked my accent, right in front of me. Over the years I've promised myself never to return to Ben's, as I often leave there with a bad feeling, due to the rude staff, but of course I return, seeing as there are no other options locally. I don't expect staff to be super friendly, as they deal with so many people, some of whom are undoubtedly rude, but basic manners (responding to a "good morning" or a "hello" perhaps, and a "thank you" in response to mine), and open hostility/rudeness?!! Like myself, many folks in the neighborhood that I speak to avoid Ben's if at all possible (people are also turned off by the smell, it seems). It's a shame. I understand that it is difficult to find staff these days, but surely basic manners aren't too much to ask for. read more

I want to love this place, as it's very convenient, but every single time I go in the staff is rude, or they won't ask people to wear masks or social distance, so I feel quite uncomfortable as it is a very small space with very arrow aisles.... The people who work at Ben's are wonderful, kind, attentive, and courteous. Their meats are fantastic, often better than bigger stores like Garden Gourmet on Broadway. They also have an amazing selection of food for a small store--like Sarabeth's jams; Bread Alone breads which excellent and for some reason fresher at Ben's than in many other stores, including Whole Foods; and many organic products. Their produce is also excellent. I don't find Ben's overpriced at all for the quality of the food, and I am just so happy that they have been able to stay open during the pandemic. I also hope that the landlords at Knoll's Circle don't try to squeeze this wonderful store out, like they have done other good shops there. read more

You can't go wrong when you shop at Bens Market . They have a variety of different types of cold cuts cheeses sushi dairy products all kinds of breads from kosher to non kosher. They have junk food household products cat food dog food I think they have beer I'm not sure but I guess you'll have to do is come down and check it out yourself. They accept credit card and cash. Never ceases to disappoint. You ever set out to go somewhere...telling yourself all the while not to go there? Making excuses for going to that place because it's the only place that's walking distance. Only to leave that place annoyed with yourself for not having listened to yourself? (Then having to mosey over next door to the Rite aid that you find mildly less disappointing.) That place for me is good ol Ben's Market. Run of the mill products and inflated prices. Only saving grace is that some of the ladies there are nice. (Some of them.) But pleasant small talk is of little consolation as my intention upon leaving my house I left my house was to buy something to fill my belly. No such luck here at Ben's. In the area this is pretty much my number one spot to grab food. Keep in mind that there are three spots. They are not open as long as the other two. But you can venture in here and grab fresh fruit you know is fresh. And yeah. The sushi guy is a plus. The staff is polite offering an occasional chat as they ring you up. Warning. Check your receipt before you leave the store. They are ripping off customers by charging more at the register than the prices listed on the items. I bought 5 items and was overcharged for 4 of them. The overcharges ranged from 40 cents to a dollar per item. They are ripping off their customers. read more

WILL NEVER GO TO BEN'S AGAIN!! been shopping in that store for almost 40 years.... there is in fact one cashier who is very rude but I overlooked that for convenience sake however there have been three experiences over those years when the food was either not prepared correctly or spoiled and caused me and a member of my family to get ill and NOT ONCE did I get a credit or refund!!!!!!!!!!! that is just BAD BUSINESS and the result is that they have lost YET ANOTHER customer...... If you tally the amount of money that I spent there over those 40 years that is ALOT of business to lose. had they made even one small good faith effort this would not have been a problem so they can keep their rude attitude, occasionally bad food and their less filled cash register as I am taking my business elsewhere. read more

the minute you walk into to this market something seems off. the smell of the place turns my stomach. some kind of funkyness on my most recent visit, the butcher was standing in the middle of produce with blood dripping down the front of his apron. the aisles are so narrow two people barely fit. the staff is constantly smoking outside the front door so you are either catching the second hand smoke while they are smoking and breathing in their smoke or they ditch the cigarette and they stink having just smoked. I will note they do not wash their hands after smoking they just go right back to work. read more

I know it's been around a long time, but I only started going here recently. The meats and fish are fantastic. Very fresh. Bell & Evans turkey! Who knew. Love me some B&E chicken, but had never seen the turkey before. The place is primed for buying small amounts. Had my choice of 2 wrapped kaiser, brioche, or other kinds of rolls all ready for me. Am making my way through the prepared foods all nicely packaged for 1-2 servings. Although, the small container of all-in-one lasagna with eggplant parm, chicken parm, sausage and cheese, and I can't remember what else may serve 100. Don't believe they make the best chopped liver I've ever had, but everything else is yum. read more

Ben's is not perfect, but they provide a great value for the people of Spuyten Duyvil and fit as much quality food into a tiny store as possible. You can always find a very good piece of meat or chicken and some not bad fish. The vegetables are limited but fresh and well stocked. They feature a bachelor's section of prepared foods like lasagna, meatloaf, and pre-packed (by Ben's) portions of deli meats and cheeses. The check-out staff are really very sweet and dedicated and take good care of the elderly clientele. read more

First off, can the staff and management get any more rude? This is a neighborhood store, and yet they act like its some king of military camp in there. Produce is stale, and dingy. Everything is overpriced (especially groceries). Well, I approached this visit today with a bit of trepidation after having read some of the other reviews. It seems that the prevailing opinion was that the staff was not friendly...nothing more could be untrue! In fact, I found the folks I met to be friendlier than they are in most Riverdale establishments. I'm thinking that those folks that made those comments may have been having a bad day themselves. Some of the customers I interacted with were rude themselves. One nice lady thought that 15 seconds was too long for me to look at and select a steak and suggested that I was holding her up. SHE was rude...not the staff. Anyway, it is not very easy to move about inside due to how cramped it is. Surly customers don't help that situation. I'm heading home now with my purchase to enjoy the steaks tonight. I'm sure they will taste fine as I used to shop at the closed Meat-o-mat on 231st Street. I'd say this is probably the best place to find a decent steak n the area..better than the local supermarkets offer. Check it out! read more
