This is my very favorite supermarket because they carry all kinds of food from your basic peanut butter to specialty cheeses and, now don't drool, juniors cheesecake. Their fruits and vegetables are good and they will prepare special cuts of produce if you ask. One really nice thing is that the people working there will help shoppers by retrieving goods from shelves or by going to look for what is needed. There is almost never a wait for check out and the clerks are careful and friendly. And one more very important thing: When my apartment building was acquired by Goldfarb Properties along with three other buildings in the area, anyone who needed any item could simply call Big Deal and they would shop for and deliver whatever was needed at a very low charge. Miguel Garcia is the owner and he also contributes to local area churches during Lent when shoppers can drop their receipts into a receptacle and Big Deal will match the total donations with its own funds. read more

I've shopped here for years and have never returned anything. The first time I did it was because they us sold moldy food and I had to answer a bunch of questions about why I was returning it. I then decided I wanted to return one more thing and instead of it being a smooth process I was interrogated about why I was returning the item, and then hassled about whether it was opened when clearly the seal was still on the item and not tampered with. The manager came over and asked a million questions about why I was returning the item inspecting the item in a judgmental manner. I asked about the return policy and clearly what I was returning and the time frame in which I was returning it complied with their policy. So why do I have to go on trial to return an item that I purchased with my own money! You don't know what people are going through. What if I needed those few extra dollars to feed my child!? Due to this unpleasant experience, we will no longer be shopping at this food market that feels entitled to prosecute its customers for returning items that are subpar and unwanted. It's your policy! It's local, well stocked, and clean. You don't get any deals. With or without the card, the price is the same. I had a negative experience that really makes me not want to go in there anymore. I was about about 15 cans of baby food, and the girl looks at me and goes "Are you on WIC?" I was taken aback by the question, and said, "what?! No. Why would you ask that?" I bought the food and waited to listen if she asked the guy behind me, who had a common WIC item, milk, if he was on WIC. I was so bothered by her assumption that I went back a few weeks later to talk to her about it. Instead of just saying sorry, she kept smirking to the cashier that was standing behind me. I didn't want to cause a scene, so I didn't turn around like I wanted to. Her excuse was I need to put information in the machine for WIC. I said how do you know what someone on WIC looks like? You should let people disclose that information. OR like most cashiers ask...just say "So how are you going to pay for that?" Option 1: Cash; Option 2: Card; or Option 3: WIC...it's really not difficult. This needs to be added to their training. No, WIC is not a bad thing, if you really need it, but don't ASSUME I need it. read more

Classy it is not, but i still prefer Big Deal to PathMark. I can't say that i've ever bothered trying to talk to, or get help from, the employees. As a general rule, minimum wage-type employees in the Bronx are not helpful, and often rude, so i save myself the trouble. The checkout clerks, while not terribly attentive, are at least fast. And yes, the produce is bad. But unlike the PathMark model, it looks like the people at Big Deal at least rinse off the road debris before putting it on the shelves. The two reasons i go to PathMark much more often than Big Deal: PathMark is much closer, and open 24/7. I was a wee bit irked the first time i walked all the way up to Big Deal only to find out it was closed by the early evening. Oh, and i think they play hockey with the canned goods, so make sure you check for dents (dented canned good are more likely to go rotten). read more

I feel so lucky to have Big Deal as my local supermarket. First off, their fresh produce is always of the highest quality. You don't get the wilted, pruning vegetables here, like you do at other supermarkets. In addition, Big Deal is incredibly inclusive to all dietary preferences: from gluten free, to keto, to vegan, to regular carnivore. I, personally, am vegan and am always impressed to see the new brands that they're selling. Currently, they have various types of field roast sausages, yves salami, chao cheese, tofutti ricotta and sour cream. Recently, I even found No Evil meats!! Which is insane, I rarely see this brand even at specialty stores. You can tell that this is a supermarket that is ahead of the times and is making the Bronx a more inclusive place. read more

I really want to like this grocery store because supporting local businesses is important me, but I'm deeply disappointed in the management of the raw meats department. I've noticed the chicken breast fillets they sell under their store brand consistently go bad several days before the 'sell by' date on the package. For example, today is 8/13/18, and the sell by date is listed as 8/16/18, and this chicken smells to high heaven through the unopened plastic wrapping, although its been refrigerated properly since the day I bought it (two days ago). I suspect they're selling older chicken than than what they say, whether it's on purpose or not. This is the third time this has happened, so it's not a "one-off" incident. Selling old raw meat affects many other unwitting customers, and is a health violation in the making. It's only a matter of time until someone gets ill, and a health inspection, legal action, and hefty fines are charged. I strongly encourage management to act in this. I'll be getting my groceries elsewhere or have it delivered instead. read more

Let me start by venting: I hate this store. I have a car now so thankfully I do not have to frequent the store and my heart is better for it. The frustration I feel when I go here will give me a stroke. So much stuff is not labelled with prices here and it's super annoying asking all the time. The produce section is the worst for this! You have no clue if you'll be paying $4.99/lb or $2.99/lb. The store has recently been renovated and expanded so I had hopes that some of the limited selection would improve. But no. Chocolate milk? Never. You can get every crappy variation of it (lactose free chocolate milk, nestles quick kind, yoohoo), but just regular chocolate milk, not a chance. Sometimes no Diet Coke or Coke Zero on the shelves for days and days at a time. Inconsistency in products for sure. Deli takes forever. Half the cashiers are great, the other half are really snotty and rude. Hate that produce is pre wrapped a lot of the time so you cant select your own, which is annoying (because if you get something like green beans you pay money for the crappy beans you can't use and would never choose to buy). So over this place. Gets a star for having a great delivery service. read more

This is a clean well stocked grocery store. However, I give one star for the rotten pasta I purchased there a few months ago. I purchased the Barilla pre cooked pasta ( I live alone n it's easier for me to buy this pre cooked than make a whole pot) In all the years I've been using this product I never had a problem with it. I began preparing my dinner the moment I got home from Big Deal. Only to open this package n discover a disgusting mess. At first I thought I mistakenly purchased a tri color rotini ( which I don't think they have in pre cooked). Anyway, a few seconds later my whole kitchen was lit up with an awful smell. It was then I realized that the pasta wasn't tri colored, it was molded. I was grossed out. I should have taken a picture, but I was so sickened by the site of rotten pasta ( n the smell was unbearable). At this point I just wanted it out of my house. I was going to just throw it away n move on with my night ....hungry. This incident killed my appetite. Instead I decided to close it up in a bag n return it to Bog Deal. I would have given 2 or 3 stars, but the 1 star rating was a result of the nasty, nasty attitude of the manger when I returned it. He was so rude. He looked at me crazy n had the nerve to be appalled by his own rotten pasta sold from his store. I showed him the receipt from only moments ago, there was no way he could argue I had this for a long time. He asked if I wanted my $2.00 back... ummmm noooo. I just wanted you to be aware that your shelves are stocked with rotten pasta. After a long break, I still shop here. However I am very careful to check all expiration dates. I will never purchase another Barilla product again, from anywhere. They have great selections on many items, you just have to be careful of expiration dates. read more

An absolute savior for Morris Park. We're hugely lacking in local places to buy fresh and healthy food, especially now that the Jacobi farmers market is done for the winter. I usually make carpool trips up to fairway or trader joes, but when I can't, I shop at big deal. They've got a decent selection of vegetarian and gluten free options, as well as all the basics. On occasion I've ended up with wilty produce...but only once or twice. I find their fish section to be fresh and well priced. I'd love it if they tried to compete with trader joes and fairway. (Even more fresh, healthy options...and more cheese, hummus, vegetable, fruit & coffee options etc.) The need is there in the neighborhood! read more

Nice, big, clean supermarket. The owner/managers/and workers are always nice. The cashiers could use some work, they don't usually smile or acknowledge you in any way. Good selection and I've seen a few sale signs here and there. One star off for not having price stickers or price tags on a lot of items. Big Deal Supermarket on Morris Park Ave @ Pauling in the Bronx, is "NO BIG DEAL," whatsoever! Prices are on par with Manhattan, things are expired (you have to look closely at dates).. at first they were strict about Covid-19 protective gear...However, now they've slacked off. People come in without masks, or masks pulled down by their throats! The owners & managers walking around, and delivery people do not abide by wearing masks! Some do, some don't! Aisles are narrow, so you cannot avoid bumping into people, who sneeze, or cough and are not wearing a mask!..Managers are rude, and do not believe the customer, if you have a legitimate problem! They do NOT HIRE WHITE PEOPLE, ONLY HISPANICS, and they all prefer to speak Spanish amongst themselves, knowing a large majority of their patrons are NOT HISPANIC..and spend a lot of money there! The produce people, do not wear masks, or gloves and handle, cut, clip & touch all the food we purchase! This has got to be the WORST supermarket in the Morris Park area. If it were not for the fact that I am without a car I would NEVER come here to buy food. There are so many reasons, I don't know where to start. 1. The "sale" signs on items are always wrong resulting in the following scenario: Going to the register, realizing they charged you full price for something, having to wait over 5 minutes to justify that it is on sale. Now imagine this every time you go out to buy food. 2. Once I had gone through this for weeks, I gave up and just started checked my receipt as I was leaving. Every single time I notice that something that was marked as on sale is now full price on my receipt. Then I get an attitude for asking for my $.50 or $1.09 back. Hello, I go once a week and that adds up. 3. No one knows what's on sale ever. I can, on any single day, ask 3 different workers if something is on sale and I will get 3 different answers. They're all useless. 4. The girls that ring up your food are a bunch of the most rude young ladies I've ever had the unpleasure of being around. The people who work in the aisles never know where anything is and when asked for something never help you look for it- their canned answer is "We're out of stock". I usually end up finding these out of stock items after a few minutes more of searching... useless! 5. Their food quality is lacking. The produce isn't fresh, the meat isn't good quality, and I've bought food before that went old the following day (arugula, shrimp, etc). 6. They now have opened a new fish section that is WIDE OPEN. This means that, instead of being clean from people's hands, coughs, sneezes, children, etc. it is open to everyone. Would you like to buy fish you can smell aisles away and can throw in a plastic bag and walk out with? Or that can have any of the aforementioned grossness on it? I don't think so. 7. The management is just as bad as the staff. Worst honestly. I could expand on this list every week as coming here to get food is usually one of the worst experiences of my week. While Pathmark is much busier and a lot more space to maneuver, the quality of products is much better and at least the staff is more professional. read more

I love coming here for the selection of food and the guacamole. Unfortunatley I have had a few uncomfortable experiences my last few times shopping there. The stock workers in my opinion are disrespectful creeps, they stared at me as if I were a piece of meat! Kept staring and just didnt stop. I even caught one of them tapping one of his buddies to look at me as i walked by, even caught them around the aisle i was in when they were by the meat section, starring as i walked away. Its very disturbing and this Is why i will not go back. If they wouldve been wearing name badges I couldve named them but none of them had any nametags. I was referred here because of their "extensive" gluten-free section. When I went to look around, the gluten-free section was a small shelf with a few gf items, most of which had no pricing. I asked an employee for pricing assistance, and he spoke no English! I had to speak Spanish to find out the prices. Not a bad market. Convenient. Clean. The one problem I do have is since they partnered with Foodtown the deli prices have gone way up. You used to be able to get Boars Head cold cuts on sale but not anymore. They are always priced higher now. To get cold cuts on sale you have to buy "store made." I come here at least twice a week. Their seafood is the freshest and best and everyone is very friendly and helpful. they carry some grea brands, and I am pretty snobby about my food. When I lived in Manhattan I shopped at Citarella, And Gracie's Market and I was so pleased to find a place nearby with the Italian delicacies I am used to. The manager is great and really helpful. They have good sales and the produce guys will go out of their way to find/order me what I need. read more

Not sure why so many people are giving negative reviews on here because there isn't anything else even remotely as clean and reasonably priced (for the most part) in the neighborhood. Their produce is always fresh and they have weekly sales on things that are cheaper than anywhere else. Their staff that is found throughout the store always asks if we need help finding anything and are always pleasant. I recently went to Whole Foods Market near Columbus Circle and asked when did they think they would be opening up a WFM in the Bronx? Apparently that will be happening as soon as the denizens of the infernal regions start to suffer from frostbite. Which brings us to the Big Deal Supermarket. I read the negative reviews and had to ask myself, "Are they shopping in the same place I am?" The staff has always been helpful. The manager even let me return 5 out of 6 bottles of an unfortunate San Pellegrino soda flavor (Chinotto), bending the store rules in the process. The main reason I go there is for the organic produce. They have a nice selection and it is always fresh. They also have organic dairy products and imported Italian Romano cheese from cows never exposed to Monsanto's Bovine Growth Hormone. Buying good quality natural foods is the sort of thing that's important to me. To have a nice store like this near-by instead of needing to go to Manhattan to Whole Foods, is a god-send. I for one, am thankful that they are in the neighborhood. read more

For a small neighborhood supermarket, it is as good as it gets. There are hard to find items here that you do not have to travel to a whole foods or trader joes to find. Okay the prices are a bit higher than other markets in the area, but I save time and gas as I can walk here. I do not like the pre-packaged meats and rarely buy meat here. I live in Pelham Bay and the only reason I go there is the fresh fish. I love the fact that I can get Wild Salmon and at a good price. You cannot get Wild it at most fish stores. I also have to try the Chilean Sea Bass. I once tried the Wild Salmon in Pathmark and it was dry and looked like it was previously frozen. I tell everyone I know about the fish department in that store in Big Deals. Most of the fish is Wild and not that farm raised garbage. I usually do my regular shopping in Key Food. I shop here often because of their organic produce, but recently I was followed around the store by a tall Hispanic man. He finally confronted me at the cashier and told me that I needed to pay twice for a crab cake that I had eaten while shopping. Usually I pay for them before I eat them but this particular time I didn't. I had placed the empty container on the conveyor belt so that the cashier can charged me but he came and told me that I had eaten 2 therefore I had to pay 2. I had only eaten 1 so I paid for one. When I called the manager he sided with his employee stating that "he saw something so he said something". How embarrassed I was. I haven't returned to the store but I did notice that this man had been following around the store for about two weeks prior to this incident. For him to go to the cashier and call me out like that in front of others was horrible and uncalled for! I'm probably going to have to returned there to get my organic stuff, but I have found a place where all they sell is organic, in the Bronx. I will stop shopping there. I'm not going to leave my money where I;m treated as a thief. I had never gone through something like that. read more
