The policy on their own Petco fish bag states: it's "recommended" not "required " to bring a water sample in when getting a fish replacement. Apparently this woman makes new policies "on the fly" for Petco. There was a new employee, a younger woman, was very cordial and said she was learning about fish. When a person doesn't know something, admit it! Don't lie and attempt to "BS" the customer (who may know a lot more than you do) I really appreciated her honesty. The original gal who sold me the B & W cory these two replaced, left a few weeks ago. She was very knowledgeable about aquatic life. One of the replacement corys died a day after I put into the 20 gallon tank. The living one is fine except for a disease it carried in. I have a diatom filter in the larger tanks backed up by a UV light. When I got the two cory catfish, there was a little bit of gravel in the bag. "Ding-dong" me, violated a rule of transferring fish. NEVER dump the water from a foreign tank directly into another tank. I was in a hurry and it's my fault I violated this rule. (Why does this "rule" exist? Because diseases and unwanted things can transfer into the new tank . What was in the gravel was a small black devil snail. I do NOT have any snails in my tanks nor do I want any. AND the second living cory ended up acting strangely. The Petco tank had a parasite infection in it. (I went back and observed the fish to possibly buy some saltwater fish for my 150 gallon saltwater tank. How do I know it came from Petco? Because I quarantine any new fish for a week in the 5 gallon before letting them into the intended tank. I will NEVER buy anything from this Petco location ever again. It's staffed by people who don't know much and the turnover seems to be high. (For whatever reason) Why did I come here in the first place? I've driven by this business many times, have never stopped in, thought I'd try it a couple months ago. If your doing it buy fish for your tank, or a new tank setup, research it carefully, and go to a place which is knowledgeable. I don't like leaving less than favorable reviews- I'm just conveying an experience I had. My suggestion is to go to a place - a local business which specializes in aquariums like "River Stream" or "Aqualand" which may have slightly higher prices, but they have staff with a plethora of knowledge. This big box store I've found is like going to a warehouse store for less expensive (sometimes) pricing for many of the same products. IMHO, If you know what you want don't expect knowledgable help. IMHO, I'd go to a different big box per shop rather than this one. I've noticed the Petsmart in Richfield has local events and fairly knowledgable people on staff most of the time. ---- I have 2 - 75 gallon aquariums, (freshwater) a 150 gallon saltwater aquarium, a 20 gallon and a 5 gallon aquarium. What could improve? Get someone knowledgeable about aquariums and fish since you sell them. And have your employee follow your policies without making up rules as she sees fit.

You aren't going to find some fly-by-night breeders there who aren't really invested in what they do because they require paperwork from everyone. Great breeders and vendors; they always have food trucks and Goth Girl Gourmet has her bakery treats and lots of people have stuff for kids, so they have fun too. They have a great facebook page where they post all the vendors and you can see who will be there and message them etc. They sell tickets for each event or you can get an annual pass and they also offer VIP entry earlier than the crowd so you can get the choice picks of any animals. This is an impressive Twin Cities reptile show - 4 stars…read more I've been out of the reptile hobby for several years. But apparently, I'm now out-of-touch! Reptiles and amphibians have gone big time in Minnesota. You no longer need to travel to Chicago or Florida to attend a big reptile show. Cold Blooded Expos puts on The Minnesota Reptile Show every few months at the Double Tree Hotel in Bloomington. Do a Google search to find the latest show dates. I brought along a young friend who loves reptiles and is somewhat obsessed with large snakes. She's definitely a budding young herpetologist! We had a blast. The show is huge and the crowds are impressive. The expo fills 2 HUGE conference centers on the second floor of the hotel. For some reason, the majority of the vendors had Ball Pythons of every size and color. I have to admit, after an hour I got a little tired of seeing, literally, hundreds of Ball Pythons. There were also a sizeable number of vendors with Geckos. Those two kinds of reptiles were the majority of specimens on offer. There were a few other interesting animals. I saw a couple of large chameleons, a few tortoises, a couple of box turtles (I didn't see any aquatic turtles), and a wonderful vendor that breeds Axolotls from St. Paul. There were a few vendors with invertebrates like spiders and centipedes. Finally, I saw at least 2 vendors with feeder insects, 1 selling habitats, a very talented wildlife artist, and a HUGE wall of bling like mugs, t-shirt, hoodies, bags, etc. My only minor gripe is the narrow selection of reptile species. Still...it was fun and worth the trip. If you have any interest in Herpetology whatsoever, I highly recommend visiting one of these shows. Also, if you're a reptile person, I suggest visiting the "Twin Cities Reptiles" pet shop in St. Paul. And if you're even more serious, The Minnesota Herpetology Society meets on the St. Paul campus of the University of Minnesota once a month in Borlaug Hall. Thumbs up! -Maxx

Well, that was me over 50 years ago except I never lost interest. I've been keeping fish and visiting fish stores around the country for my entire life. The people from World Of Fish who started RiverShore Aquariums have done a great job. Located not far from the original World of Fish, RiverShore has clean tanks, friendly and knowledgeable staff and they are super keyed in on planted tank setups. These days my tanks are relatively simple just to keep things easy, rocks and driftwood mostly, but I've been wanting to do a planted tank for a while. I know the basics but had some questions on substrate, plant selection and lighting for what is basically going to be a freshwater nanotank. The staff person who helped me was super knowledgeable, answered my questions and gave me some good advice for getting started. They had a good selection of different kinds of gravel as well as an assortment of driftwood and rocks. I liked that they have a table where you can do a little aquascaping trial and error before you make a final selection. The fish were high quality and appeared healthy. Most were smaller species suitable for planted tanks. I even discovered a new species that I had never heard of - anchor catfish. Super cool and perfect for my little nanotank. I know enough about fish and have been to enough fish stores to know which ones are really good. Rivershore is at the top of the list if you live in the Twin Cities, and especially if you're interested in giving planted tanks a try. Even if its plants aren't your thing or you are new to the hobby, I'd checkout Rivershore for your first aquarium.

Rivershore Aquariums is that friend: All the tanks are SO clean, and so perfectly lit, and all the fish are ready for their closeups. It's like an aquatic Parade of Homes in there -- 0% chance of the "Oh gosh, that fish looks so sick, should I mercy-buy it & set up a hospital tank & try to save it? Or should I not give this place my money?" experience. You should definitely give this place your money. They also sold me the sweetest, most industrious little pleco I've ever had in my life. I bought her as a bristlenose pleco, but she's secretly some kind of Turbo Pleco -- as in, my tank gets direct sunlight (can't be avoided), and it had the algae to match, but a week after I brought my new plec'ling home, I found myself asking a visitor, "Hey, you didn't clean the inside of the 55gal while you were here, did you?" (Spoiler: No, I do not have tank-cleaning houseguests. I just have a magic pleco.)
