I recently stopped in to Bentley's in desperation because my 2 year old Pug had been having digestive issues even though I was feeding him the dog food my Vet recommended. Additionally, he had begun to gain quite a bit of weight. I was surprised by the large selection of dog foods and the variety of types of food (wet, dry, frozen, etc). However, most important was the competent, professional (yet friendly) clerk who assisted me. Amet (the clerk) knew exactly what was in the dog food I was currently using even though they do not sell it at Bentley's. She asked about a number of other aspects of my feeding routine, and then gave me large samples of 3 different brands of dog food to try with my Pug. She was very interested in my situation and knowledgeable about the ingredients in a dizzying array of dog foods. She made all the information manageable. I am happy to say it's been a few weeks since my initial visit and my Pug's digestive issues have improved dramatically. The samples were really helpful because it turned out that he really disliked one of them (I have never known a Pug to reject any type of food). It would have been a disastrous problem if I had purchased an entire bag of the food and he didn't like it. Really, the samples and knowledgeable staff set Bentley's apart from most fancy pet shops. They are very serious about dog food! And the staff can't be beat in terms of knowledge, interest, and friendly helpful attitude. read more

Another disabled friend who I had mentioned the experience to told me she heard they fired the manager of this location who was immunocompromised and the reason this store took Covid precautions. Although this is a popular local stores which I have shopped often, unfortunately it's size limits choices. Yesterday, I bought winter booties I was told are very well made and durable. That's probably true, but after attempting to get them onto my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel's 1 year old paws...I gave up. Not user-friendly and complicated double straps don't help. Before, I bought red large mouth balloons at Follow Your Nose and they, too, were ridiculous and impossible to get them on. Ridiculous. read more

Finally got myself to stop in here after picking up pie next door. I have seen several locations but I always assumed it was going to be expensive. WRONG! I walked in and was pleasantly greeted but an very helpful and friendly employee. He helped me find exactly what I was looking for in a matter of seconds. I ended up buying one of their several fresh baked all natural cookies for dogs. All of the prices that I saw around the store were very affordable (I'm sure some stuff is expensive but so is every other pet store). They had a nice selection of both dog and cat food, toys, and other needs. I love the concept of all natural foods that are healthy. I signed up for the rewards system and was given a free welcome kit for both my dog and my sister's cat! Overall, will be stopping in here more often for both big and small purchases. read more

When they first opened this location, I enjoyed going there for my little rescue that had a lot of special needs & dietary issues. I've noticed a dramatic change in the past year with the staff working here. A few seem very bothered that they have a job at all, one in particular was off putting on a recent visit where my vet suggested a diet change. Everyone in here seems "too cool" to be bothered to be at work, not friendly in the least and since I've never been in this store where more than 2 customers are here, it doesn't seem an impossible task to not have attitude, be slightly engaged with the customer. It's a far cry from when I used to go here and the staff knew my dog's name and mine. As far as selection, I don't find them that great. The dog clothes, some are cheap and overpriced...others better quality but still overpriced. My dog has skin issues so the pet clothes are a necessity not a fashion statement. They never seem to have what I need in stock and what's the point in ordering from a small business to keep that small business employing employees who seem like they'd rather be at home collecting unemployment or a Covid stimulus check. After placing a special order, waiting a week, went to pick up the item. The store had closed for some reason, a sign informed me to go 3 miles south to another location. No arrangements made for people to pick up items they placed orders for. I ended up going to Pet People the same day. Friendlier staff, better selection & they actually had what I needed on the shelf. I didn't need to wait a week for an order, only for the store to be closed. read more

Ruth & Charlotte took time to walk me through a plethora of options for my food-sensitive Weimaraner. I left the store with more knowledge than my vets were willing to share with me. and I was even told that if what I purchased didn't seem to work, I was told to come back so we could try other options. My concerns about my dogs quality of life have never been addressed with so much care. Bentley's of Evanston has made a convert of me. I will never go back to Petco/PetSmart for either of my dogs needs going forward based on the level of customer service I received from both Ruth & Charlotte at Bentley's of Evanston. 5 stars for sure! read more

This is a health food store for dogs and it's a great concept. Everything is grain free. In my case, the employees have actually been more effective than vets when it comes to solving health problems such as patchy fur (usually due to food allergies, so skip all the expensive tests - wish I had found Bentley's FIRST - my dog's fur has totally rebounded since I started shopping there.) I wish for everyone's sake their marketing would convey that more strongly - like "Bentley's *Healthy* Pet Stuff" because a lot of people won't get it and it leaves and the employees to make the value proposition - which they do pretty well but I just wish they had marketing that more clearly explained how unique the store's offerings actually are. They could capture a maximum of the highly educated consumer, which abounds in Evanston and pretty much everywhere in the city of Chicago. read more

This place is a chain, but doesn't feel like one. The staff is super helpful, friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. The selection of dog foods, treats, etc. is extensive. Since the pandemic, I've been calling ahead with my order; then when I arrive, I just give them a call, and whoever is working happily delivers my purchase to my car. Who can ask for more? We used to jus order our dog food online from Amazon because it's free shipping (yay Prime!) and they bring it to our door. But, with this lovely shop being so close to us, we'll frequently just go grab a bag. Plus, then we can pick up a scrumptious (I assume - she's a pretty big fan anyway) treat for our doggo. Her favorite are the No Hide salmon chews or any of the Etta Says, which they always have. When we first moved back to the area from Seattle last summer, this gem hadn't opened yet and we had a lot of trouble finding the larger Etta Says treats, but we've had no trouble at all since they opened. The staff listens to you and provides great insight. I just brought a rescue kitty into my home who will not eat any wet food, nor will he eat the hard food that the shelter recommended. They gave me a sample of 4 brands to try. That was so helpful! I'll be back again and again. read more

I've been going to Bentley's since they first opened the Evanston location. I have an old cat with a sensitive stomach and a dog with food allergies, so I'm picky about what they eat. For the last 8 years I have been ordering food online for our dog. The food was a good quality, limited ingredient food made the US that she had been eating before we got her. Back then there were not as many options for food of that quality and she liked it, so we kept her on this food until recently. Unfortunately, the producer closed their doors and I had to start looking for other options. I did a lot of online research and had compiled a short list of brands to look for. When I went in to see what they had available, the woman working came out and asked what I was looking for, what kind of dog, what ingredients I wanted and did not want in the food. She recommended a few options, one of which was the same manufacturer as one of the items on my list. I asked about the food on my list and she pointed me to another food by the same company that was comparable, but less expensive. I really appreciated the time she took to help me and the clear knowledge she had of their products. While I might be able to find a less expensive food at one of the big pet stores, I'm willing to pay a little more for the expertise and care I get at this store. Terra and her staff have been so unbelievably kind, thoughtful, and knowledgeable (especially re: dog allergies and sensitive digestive systems).
