He was very professional and told me all the reasons I should buy it and why other dogs love it. My foster puppy found it before Christmas and it's easily her new favorite toy! Follow Your Nose dog walking services penalized me for legitimate needs for canceling service. I have been trying tirelessly for over five months to obtain the store credit that I was told I could obtain in light of no refunds. Now they are threatening to take me to court for defamation and to file a restraining order for my many calls and emails to try to resolve this matter without involving legal authorities. They have ~$700 of mine for services not rendered. For these reasons, I certainly do not recommend their services and unprofessional bullying tactics. read more

So I've been a customer of this place as long as I've lived in South Evanston. And I'm a huge supporter of small businesses and family businesses, as that is my business. And I followed them to North Evanston, which is not too convenient, but still trying to support a locally owned business. I would purchase things in person and then they had a credit card on file as often times they would not have a full amount of cat food that I would like to purchase. So I would pre-order and then they would order it from their distributor and let me know when it came in. I was preparing for a near two month out of town trip and did not want my pet sitter to have to run around to get anything. This trip was starting in mid August, and I started to order the product at the beginning of July. Before 4 July holiday. When I checked with them after the Fourth of July holiday, they told me that my order was delayed due to the holiday. Every week there after, was another excuse. I finally ran all around the area to gather up the supplies I needed for my pet sitter and then left for out of town. My phone rings as I'm riding my bicycle from the West Coast back to Evanston, on August 19, over a month and a half since this whole ordeal started, and they say that my food is in. I told them I did not need my food, as they knew the reason for my big order with plenty of time so that i could have it in by the time i left. Somehow, they could not satisfy that, but I took care of it on my own. When I get home almost 2 months later, I checked my credit card statement, and they did not issue me a refund. I spoke to them, and he told me it was a special order. This is BS as this is just food that they keep on the shelf. I just like to order it in bulk so I always have enough when I pick it up as I have two cats. He said he was going to get back to me, which he never did, so I did a chargeback on my credit card. When I see the response that they filed to my chargeback, he said that I was an in store sale and it was a card present transaction and I took the product home with me. This is a complete LIE! Was not an in-store sale, and they charged the card that was on file. Again, all LIES. I'm still waiting on the outcome of the chargeback, but I submitted proof of transactions that were card present on the exact same day, and I am in the state of Washington, nowhere near Evanston, Illinois. So couple of things, number one, this guy is just stupid. Why not try to accommodate a regular customer that drives out of his way to still stay a regular customer and support your business? Does he not get that? And again, these are just products that he could put on the shelf and sell. Which I'm sure he did. And number two, he is a LIAR! So I'm looking for another local pet store to buy my products from. Until then, I guess it's a Bentley's. read more

Gave them another chance after bad experience years ago and received $180 unauthorized charge for a bath, nails and sanitary cut for a 17 pound indoor dog. Their fee schedule is not posted anywhere so they charge whatever they feel like that day.. I instructed their groomer to ignore 2 small matted spots, and he agreed, but they lie and deny that. She added a $20 tip without consulting me. and says I told her to, also a lie. I didn't even know the total in advance, so how would I know what to tip? Was subjected to a shockingly unprofessional, condescending, insulting and abusive diatribe by email after contesting the charges and explaining I don't pay $180 for my own hair color and style. She could have just agreed to the $60 refund I requested or prevented the whole disagreement by simply calling me about the charges. She'd rather fight and be nasty. If my dog was severely matted, they would have returned him shaved. He was shaved nowhere on his body. She threatened to call police if I reversed the charge. The female owner is dishonest and toxic. Do NOT give them your credit card no. in advance. They will take advantage. I'm sure she'll reply here, but it will be total bs about how neglected and matted my dog is and how she could report me for it. I've been a regular customer at this store for the last year and a half. I love their groomer, Betty. She's so kind and professional. I made an appointment recently for my pup to get groomed. The day before the appointment, I received a reminder call. Please note: the reminder call was not 24 hours in advance. My whole family was sick and I was very worried about Covid, and was waiting for results. When I told them that I had to rescheudle the appointment and wasn't able to reschedule at that time, I was overwhelmed. My intention was to reschedule when I could think straight. About 10 minutes later I received a very angry phone call from their owner who told me that if I didn't reschedule I would lose the ability to ever use their groomer again. She said this is how their groomer makes money and to cancel during the holidays without 24 hours notice was unfair to her employees. She was very upset, and I understood - but still didn't have the capacity at that time to call back, apologize, and reschedule. I went into the shop today and told them that I would like to pay for the grooming session I missed. I was also going to pick up my regular dog food and treats, and make another appointment with Betty. My 7yr old daughter was with me and excited to buy her friends some of the cute dogs pins they have. We placed all our items at check out. The gentleman behind the counter asked my name and went in the back. He returned to tell me that I could not pay for the appointment I missed and I could not make another appointment. I have apparently been banned from using their services! Lol. He went to ring me up for the rest of our items, to which I promptly said, "never mind!" Needless to say, I will never give that store my money ever again. My goal now is to find Betty and give her a some cash. I feel sorry for her, that she works there. She just lost out on the income from TWO appointments because of this business owners attempt at control. I cannot believe that these owners are so confident as an independent business that they think they can treat their customers this way. I may just be a random Yelp reviewer but I can tell you that the key to success of any business is relationships. Bentley's is right down the block, and even if it is a chain, this branch is owned by a very very kind person - so I can get my dog food there. Recently moved back to the area and decided to go back to FYN for grooming. The results were horrific. My dog ended up getting all his hair buzzed off, completely destroying his look. On top of that he ended up with horrible clipper burn and he's been in terrible pain/discomfort. I would NEVER take him back to these people. My sister hired them to sit for her cats for a week. I checked in on her cats and the house and found the sitters notes that they have only been to see the cats in the mornings. The cats haven't received dinner or their meds at night for 5 days now. My sister has tried calling them and still hasn't received a call back. Of course, they charged her the full amount up front. I almost never write online reviews, but I should have read all the negative 1 star reviews of this business first... the female manager of this store is so outrageously rude/confrontational it's almost surreal... Clearly she hates her life and it bleeds over and projects onto every interaction she has!...When, I brought back an unused/unneeded kennel to this store with receipt 2 weeks after I purchased it, the owner explained that kennels are never able to be returned or exchanged due to certain local k9 laws, so I explained how I actually don't even own a dog yet (I'm waiting for a puppy to be whelped from it's mother still now...) and I don't need the kennel cause I already found a better one elsewhere; the manager offered to donate the kennel for me instead of just throwing it away so I agreed. But, after taking the kennel back for donation, the manager proceeded to needlessly argue with me in front of numerous other customers telling me to, "stop talking." (I wish I was making this up...). I told her I wasn't leaving until I received the store credit she offered; to which she said she would, "call 911" (again, not making this up...). What a delightful little store! I walked in with my puppy today and the staff warmly welcomed us. I was looking for water bottle with a bowl attachment for my dog, what I thought might be hard to find but sure enough, that had it. They were very sweet to my dog and gave us samples of dog food. About the only thing these people are attentive to is flagging their own numerous bad reviews. Do dig around for their history, though: it's an eye-opener. They've operated under a variety of names and under the cloud of an equal variety of legal issues over the years. Walking into the storefront can be a harrowing experience, with fights taking place at top-volume in plain view of the customers. Their in-home service is no better. The employees themselves are blameless, but the operation is poorly coordinated and it was their labor practices that got them shut down for a time. I was a wholesale vendor to this store when it was called The Hungry Pup. I had great rapport with both husband and wife owners including selling discounted floor sample specials from a trade show and helping carry these items to the car. After my business burned down Ramie offered to buy the little inventory I had left in storage. We agreed to a 3 payment plan. I shipped and paid for freight about $250. They received over $1300 worth of merchandise including high end handmade bedding, cute dog houses and awesome decorative pet crates. After the goods were received I was never able to get either owner on the phone. Up until that time it was easy to get either hubby or wife on the phone. So I spent time over the next year trying to collect but finally had to put this to collections. To add insult to injury, they falsely told the collections people they had requested my company pick up the goods!!! I was never paid nor was I ever requested to pick up the goods. The Hungry Pup went bankrupt and became Follow Your Nose. What I found most disheartening and upsetting was how friendly they were until they just couldn't or wouldn't pay the invoice. Don't patronize anymore. Owner lied about the dog food manufacturer Fromm moving their production to China. The store was having financial difficulty and could not pay their bill to Fromm or the distributor, So the owners slandered a good company. Their mark-up is high. The source of their rawhide is unknown - there is no indication it is American and not from China. They claim to bake their own cookies - they don't. Wonderful neighborhood pet store! Not only do they have a wide variety of pet supplies, but they also offer grooming services. Our dog is 14 years old and blind, so she requires extra attention and a lot of patience. The friendly, knowledgeable staff made her feel comfortable from the minute we walked in the store. The one-on-one conversation with the groomer before the service was really helpful. The price for the grooming service is comparable to others. Gracie came out looking GREAT! It pains me to leave this update, but, the facts are the facts. After years of using FYN for dog walking service, we stopped because of the confusing/inaccurate billing system. As other reviews have stated, FYN requires customers to pay for walks a month in advance, and then keep track of credits which are applied to the next month's bill. I will say that part of the reason we stuck with FYN for so long, despite not liking their billing process, was because my husband works at home more often than not, and we could call them in the morning and leave a message saying we didn't need a walk for that day. They were always very accommodating, for which we were appreciative. I do suspect, however, that this became problematic for them, when they'd expect our next month's bill to be higher, when it wound up being significantly reduced due to our credits. We fully understand that a business needs and wants to make money, however, we will not tolerate being taken advantage of, and FYN did just that. Every year I am on vacation the last 2 weeks of December, and for the last 2 years I made the owners of FYN aware of this in advance, so that our bill for December would be accurate: they would only bill us for the first two weeks of December. If we found we needed a walk during our vacation, we would ask if they could fit us in, and pay for that day by cash or check. This past November I did the same thing: sent the owners an email with my dates of Dec. vacation, and applied any credits from November. This past Dec. we had so many credits from November that we didn't owe a Dec. bill since we only needed walks on weekdays from Dec. 1-15. I also received a call from Dave (owner) to confirm my Dec. dates so imagine my confusion when his wife Ramie sent us a bill for $90 for Dec. I emailed her twice asking her to explain what the $90 was for, she never responded. She did weeks later respond with some suspect response that her email hadn't been working, hence her lack of reply. My husband, not wanting to engage in back and forth with her, paid the $90 even though we didn't owe it. He said he spoke with Ramie and for some reason she said someone would walk our dogs for the time I was on vacation. Long story short, no one came to walk our dogs between Dec. 18-31, nor did we get our $90 back. They took our money and didn't provide service, and when I spoke to Dave about it AGAIN, telling him that they were either giving us back our money, or, sending one of their walkers to our house, he said he'd "talk to Ramie and look into it" and get back to us. Didn't happen. They took our money and didn't provide a service, period. $90 isn't going to make or break us, but, you for damn sure aren't going to take our money and not provide the service that money is paying for. I'm sure Dave and/or Ramie will come here and dispute this with untruths, say we were problem clients, we didn't pay our bills, etc, but the truth is the truth. We ended our business with them bc we no longer wanted to deal with the headache, and i was meticulous about keeping our credits straight with them. Our new dog walking service is amazing, and the paying in advance BS doesn't happen, because we pay weekly. I could never in good conscience recommend FYN to anyone. read more

We've used FYN in the past for pet sitting needs (for our 13-year-old cat)...about three times when we went on short trips (from three days to one week). One thing I will say: although the actual pet sitters seem to do a good job heeding special instructions and writing detailed notes for the owners while they are away, the owner, specifically Ramie, is not very diligent (nor nice!) with/about customer follow-up. Example: we were away on vacation and all we wanted to know is if our cat was doing ok. I had to hound Ramie via email and call the store numerous times (and when you call you get routed through an auto-menu that takes WAY TOO LONG TO NAVIGATE through). If and when you finally get a hold of someone, it's usually a clueless person in the store who has no idea about anything pet-sitting related. I understand the STORE operates on usual business hours, but if you're also claiming you're a pet sitting business, you have to respond to your clients outside of normal business hours (and that includes holidays!) It's poor business practice for the owners to make customers feel as if they are bothersome just for trying to get information about their pet (which is how Ramie made me feel). Dave, on the other hand, I can say with full confidence called me right away when I left a message on our last trip (also just to check in about our pet). I don't think they will be receiving our business again unfortunately for them. You just lost a pet sitting customer, Ramie. Remember: the customer is always right AND the customer comes first in business. When you run a pet sitting service, follow-up with your clients within the first 24 hours to give them peace of mind. A text or email will do. It's just good business practice. Maybe Ramie should stick to grooming the animals and leave Dave to the pet-sitting side of the business. He's clearly much better with customer service. read more

For the dog owner that is willing to go the extra mile for their pet. If your pet has allergies, this is the shop for you. Walk in and tell one of their associates what allergies your doggie has got and they'll tell you which brands and foods are best for your dogs needs. You can also get some gourmet or organic foods and pet treats. The treats look so good you may like to sample them, which is Okay says one of their main proprietors. I tried a bit of a cookie, I wouldn't buy a bag for myself but the dogs liked them, expensive though. The store is small but has two levels with tons of stuff. For me it reminds me of an over crowded candy store or that scene in the Harry Potter movie when he goes to purchase a wand. There are many kinds of anything's for your pet. I think most everything is for a dog, you should call or see other reviews. I feel like they do have some items for cats. Few things I recall most: for $3-$6 bucks you can get a dried beef jerky stick the length of your leg, also other assortments of braided pieces of jerky and other chewy things a dog could gnaw on. Many colors and styles of chains, leashes, and clothing styles for tiny pups. Downstairs all kinds of foods from frozen meats to dry snacks; the dry snacks are specific to your dogs allergies, I've gotten some completely organic veggie and fruit treats as well as yummy treats with ingredients I'd never heard of. Their stuff isn't cheap, but if you are willing to spend the time looking and know what your pet can / can't have; you can definitely walk out with some interesting buys and not spend an arm and a leg. During Christmas they had a Santa in the store available for photos with your pets! He was there in the store for a couple hours.. devotion to pets.. I tell ya. read more

This store is FULL of the best toys, clothing, food, fresh baked treats, harnesses, bowls, beds, decor and much, much more. The prices aren't cheap, but the quality is obviously high and worth it. I actually can't wait to shop here for my pup, because I know that he'll be the most stylish, well-fed and happy little boy when he has gear and food from this store. I use Follow Your Nose to purchase almost all of the food and pet care products needed for our two dogs and three cats. The owner, Raime, is a fount of information about pet care and has recommended some great products over the years that I have shopped there. They stock brands that I have not been able to find elsewhere. I have also used Follow Your Nose for my dogs' nail trims with great results. The staff is wonderfully warm and always offer to carry my purchases to my car. Follow Your Nose also helps out one of the local pet shelters, CARE, by fostering cats for them. Follow Your Nose is the type of locally grown store that makes Evanston special and unique. P.S. We use their dog walking service and from time to time stop in to the shop. The dog walking service is great. They leave detailed notes and take care of everything from bringing in the mail to feeding the fish. I can't recommend it enough. The shop is a little high-end for our tastes (luckily, our dogs like the cheaper stuff), but everything we've gotten there has been top quality. DO NOT GO HERE!!!! The owners are sketchy to say the least; they spend their day yelling at each other, at employees, at their young son, AND at customers too and have had more than a few mishaps with grooming that has resulted in harm to the pet. On top of that, as a former employee I know of at least four employees who have been denied a final paycheck. How did the owners handle it? By blocking the employee's numbers and slamming doors in their faces when confronted with their illegal behavior. In addition, the prices are higher here than if you went to a big chain store or even other small locally-owned pet store (like Thee Fish Bowl), with average quality items and a tacky refund policy. No one stays with Follow Your Nose very long, and trust me when I tell you that there is a very clear reason for that. Need proof? Look at what everyone else has to say or walk in there yourself. Although my initial experience with the shop left something to be desired, I recently started using their dog-walking service and have been pleased with the experience. The owners have been helpful - when they were out of something I needed, they sent it with the dog-walker when it came in. Definitely makes my life easier. For the most part, we have the same dog-walker 5 days a week and he is GREAT! Our dogs love him and I trust him with them. The store is definitely high-end. Although I do not purchase dog food from them, they do seem to have a great selection of wet and dry food. I do get bones and chews from them for our dogs, including frozen bones, which is great. He came out and met us and our dog, and we got down to business. He was friendly and professional and he was an obvious dog lover. My husband and I liked him right away. The Hungry Pup is a really fun independent pet store. I only recently found it and was happily surprised as it carries a huge variety of organic pet food brands and is many many flavors - not to mention, they are always very well stocked which is a problem I've had with some of the other independent pet stores in the area. The store attendants are really nice and friendly! My only complaint is that none of them seemed to know much about the nutritional values of the different cat foods I was looking at or some of my more specific questions but they did their best to look it up and help me figure everything out! I was happily surprised to find such a great little pet store in the area.
