I'm not quite sure what has happened within the organization since then. My wife was originally scheduled to have cataract surgery on 5 Aug 2024. She was told to appear on Monday at 6:30 for the procedure. We arrived for the appointment only to find out that the Surgical Center didn't open until 7 AM. My wife had been "prepped" for the procedure while I sat in the waiting room for at least 3 hrs. When I was finally contacted in the waiting room, I was told that there was a problem with the equipment required for this procedure and they were working on it, only to be told later on, that they needed to schedule a technician to correct the equipment problem. An organization of this scope handles a considerable amount of patients (100's maybe more) on a regular basis. Is there an existing policy in place that calls for regularly scheduled inspection/maintenance of the complex/expensive equipment that is utilized to perform these procedures? IF NOT, WHY NOT? If there is no established policy of preventative maintenance, it indicates a lack of basic planning and does NOT bode well for an organization of this scope. If your equipment maintenance is based on a "pay as it breaks" philosophy", both you and the public, PAY the price in cancelled procedures, rescheduled operations, wasted time and unhappy customers. None of which, enhances the reputation of Hampton Roads Eye Associates. We left the facility between 12:30 and 13:00 that day. Were we to abruptly cancel this same appointment, I'm sure that there would have been a financial penalty on our part. Consequently, we were required to reschedule for 9 Sept 2024 which we did. FAST FORWARD: Today 7 Oct 2024. We showed up this AM only to find out that the particular lens that is required for this procedure was due to arrive at approximately 11 AM on Friday, 4 October and it had not. Unfortunately, this wasn't revealed to us, until after my wife had checked in today and was informed by the nurses that they'd expected the part on Friday. Call me old fashioned if you will, but it would have been nice to know that. There is obviously a COMMUNICATION problem here. When the truck arrived without the required item, this information should have been communicated to all of the parties involved. The fact that the surgical team does not work on a Friday afternoon should have no bearing as to why this information WAS NOT made available to everyone concerned. This leads me to believe that problems of this type are caused by poor procedures and an overall lack of communication within the organization which leads to a definite decline in customer service. This does not require an MBA to figure out; a freshmen level Business class could have told you the same thing.

She asked a few questions and finally said she would be there at the appointed hour. Dr. Spellman had just told her that the small bruise under her right eye that he had scraped to biopsy had shown squamous cells, a potential skin cancer. He wanted to see her that day for another look and additional skin removal for more testing. She asked me to go with her to his office at nearby Hampton Roads Eye Associates on Warwick Boulevard to keep her company and help her listen to what was said. I took it all in and was impressed both with her strength and total alertness and the doc's direct sincerity and careful delivery of difficult information. Nothing final before the new lab work was completed, and it was clear that he was just being careful with his patient even before he could draw any conclusions. Spellman was at the top of his game and his professionalism and humanity set the right tone and told her by his manner that in all likelihood this would not be a big deal, but couldn't wait. We walked out into that chilly Newport News winter afternoon, knowing she was being very well cared for, and able to enjoy the rest of the day. Five Hippocratic Stars for Dr. Spellman and his practice.

I appreciate that they pay careful attention to your insurance benefits - which can fluctuate from year to year/plan to plan. As another bonus, they have a nice little eye glasses store attached so you can one-stop shop if you'd like (I actually ended up going to Lens Crafters for a wider selection, but if you're not picky, you might find something there you like!). I also have appreciated that they have not pushed unnecessary procedures on me -- a previous eye doctor was insistent I needed lasik, and when I asked about my astigmatism, he dismissed it. The doctors here were very careful about laying out pros and cons of the procedure and actually recommended against it given the cost/benefit ratio I'd face with the type of problem I have in the one eye. Overall, I would recommend them to any new friend or colleague in the area looking for an eye doctor.

I thought I might be headed towards the same issue in my other eye, but I also knew that flashes could indicate a more serious retinal detachment. So, I was frantically trying to find an eye doctor on a Friday afternoon to perform an exam. I initially called Dr. Alan Wagner's office, as he is a highly rated retina specialist in the area. His office wasn't able to fit me in, but they referred me to Dr. Kaz. Trudy on her staff was absolutely wonderful. Hearing my issues, she quickly spoke to Dr. Kaz, who agreed to see me in just under two hours. I had not even finished the paperwork before they called me back to the room, so the wait was very short! I was highly impressed with Dr. Kaz. She was competent, thorough, and explained everything very well. She confirmed that my right eye had developed acute PVD. Luckily, there was no macular pucker or retinal detachment, but she recommended that I follow up with my usual eye doctor in 4-6 weeks to confirm no change to my condition. I am so grateful to Dr. Kaz and her staff for fitting me in so quickly. What an excellent experience! FYI - Their office still requires you to wear a mask while in the office. The disposable blue ones are fine. Because I was from out of state, the office required me to pay a $250 deposit (even though my insurance company listed Dr. Kaz as a preferred provider). I'm deducting one star for this experience, and I do hope I get a credit from her office when insurance pays for the visit.

Every visit I have had here has been absolutely wonderful. I seldom have to wait beyond the scheduled time for my appointment, and, when the appointment does begin, the staff are courteous, caring, and attentive to what I am physically feeling. The women working in the optical division of the Eye Center are nothing short of wonderful, as well (my particular experience has been with Emily, whom I would credit for ensuring that I do not prematurely develop blindness). I tend to be very critical of doctors (medical jargon doesn't impress me, in the words of Julia Sugarbaker), and I've never had anything but wonderful experiences here. If your insurance covers the Eye Center, I would heartily encourage you to go. The facility is lovely and maintained impeccably, and the staff and doctors are a delight.

My old Eye Doctor back in my hometown only had 1 person working in the office. It always seemed that I was in and out quickly. There are 3 providers that I know of here. I lost count of the number of people working in this business, this just needlessly drives up the cost of care in my opinion. My primary issue is I was careless and let the provider prescribe a contact lens that did not work correctly. I made contact and was told they would order a trial lens and call me back for another fitting That was months ago and I still have not heard back. I'm not going back, and it's a shame because this clinic is almost within walking distance from my home.
