Worked here, woke up at 7 AM; curfew was at 9 but never got to sleep until 10PM and had to stay in…read moreif I was on duty watching kids. Not a bad lake and amenities, food was alright but was working during meals. From the 2 sessions I signed up for (2 months give or take) only got assigned 5 nights and 5 full days off. Promised that if we were on duty we would have help (2 people on duty at any time), but their coverage was lacking resulting in one staff member having to watch 8 kids at a time. First time at a summer camp job, but I can't believe how low the bar was when it came to health and first aid. Kids were puking and vomiting, getting rashes, and getting sick. Their response was giving them a puke bag, brushing it off, and/or giving them a break at the health center for a day and then sending them back right out. The nurses on-site slapped band aids and gave lollipops while real practitioners that came by every now and then just confirmed you weren't "that sick". I was horribly sick. I caught it from one of my kids and only given ibuprofen and 2 days at the health center. No tests for Covid or the flu and I probably had one or the other (maybe both how would I know). Had a horrible fever but my 100.3 degree internal temperature was just under their 100.4 degree mark to stay in bed and so I was sent back to work. Tried wearing a mask but I was discouraged for whatever reason? I suppose they would rather let me spread the actual disease rather than let me spread hysteria among the staff and kids. Staff checked up on me every now and then showing surface-level concern but once I announced that I had to leave early because I felt horribly sick they stopped asking and they were also evidently pissed off. Was promised 2800 for staying for the two full sessions but after only one session was given 850 (400 of which was my travel stipend to cover the flight to the camp). If I had been given the right amount of care and medicine I would actually still be there by now. I cared about my kids and I appreciated the environment but all of this was to more or less say that after checking in to an urgent care yesterday I can confirm that I have pneumonia. Do not work here if you can get sick, prefer not to work while being horribly ill, have any sense and perception of others' health and well-being, and if you want to get paid well for your time, effort, blood, sweat, and tears.

The counselors are exceptionally well-trained, receiving a full week of preparation focused on safety, team-building, and camper connection before the kids even arrive. From counselors to campers to parents, everyone is welcomed like family. The camp places a strong emphasis on inclusion and encourages kids to step out of their comfort zones, try new things, and take pride in their accomplishments. We were initially nervous sending our daughter away for three weeks that first summer, but on her first phone call home, she BEGGED to stay the full six weeks. Camp has structure, but it's structure inside a framework that's different from home or school. At K&E, the kids have a safe space to grow in ways we didn't even realize were possible. Our daughter is creating lifelong friendships, learning the importance of teamwork, & having an absolute blast in the process--and for us, that's absolutely priceless.
