I organized a winter retreat for my youth group to this camp. They mostly have summer camps but…read morethey have one large building winterized. They host their own winter camps in February, but I rented out the place to do my own thing in January. They do not have any staff who stay on the premises with you, which is not the best thing... in case of an emergency, or even if we can't find something we need, we had to call someone who doesnt even really live nearby. I would have preferred there to be a staff person on site all weekend. Also, we had hired a cook to do all of our meals, but she never showed up, so we were basically on our own for meals last minute. Luckily, we figured out everything, but it definitely put us in a bind. The Camp itself seems pretty nice. They have some sledding hills and sleds to use, an ice skating pond, and lots of land for hikes/walks. The winter we were in is really run down, flies EVERYWHERE, mice in the basement, stains on the mattresses. But they have great tables and benches, a wonderful wood stove, a pretty good kitchen area, popcorn machine, dishwasher, etc. Definitely very rustic though. It was good for our group of 25, but that's definitely the maximum amount to be comfortable in that building. If you are looking a place for a small retreat with some good outdoor options, and don't mind "rustic", this place is great. Also VERY inexpensive!! ($20 per person per night for lodging).

Friends were able to come for the weekend and canoe, swim, hike, etc while the wedding party got things ready. I reminded friends and family that they were coming to a summer camp and many shared that they were surprised by how it was better than they expected. The parents prepared the rehearsal dinner in the kitchen which worked out really great and our caterer expressed that it was a great space to work in. All in all it was a great experience and the staff was great about any problems we had.

The counselors are exceptionally well-trained, receiving a full week of preparation focused on safety, team-building, and camper connection before the kids even arrive. From counselors to campers to parents, everyone is welcomed like family. The camp places a strong emphasis on inclusion and encourages kids to step out of their comfort zones, try new things, and take pride in their accomplishments. We were initially nervous sending our daughter away for three weeks that first summer, but on her first phone call home, she BEGGED to stay the full six weeks. Camp has structure, but it's structure inside a framework that's different from home or school. At K&E, the kids have a safe space to grow in ways we didn't even realize were possible. Our daughter is creating lifelong friendships, learning the importance of teamwork, & having an absolute blast in the process--and for us, that's absolutely priceless.

We made our choice based on the activities, the goal of having silly fun, and the testimonials. The camp provided so much more than we expected. The diversity of activities allowed him to break out of his comfort zone and try new things. The cabin set up created an instant comradery that made it easier for the kids that were attending by themselves. He left feeling close to all of his bunkmates, and even shared some tears on pick up day. He adored and idolized his counselors. They are such a great group of young adults that work together to make the experience for the kids life altering. For example, after the camp there was a noticeable change in our son's confidence. He struggles with social anxieties and has a hard time being himself. Following the camp he started a new school in a different town, and he quickly acclimated and had no problem making friends . We credit Birch Hill for setting him up for success. A summary of our camper's review: "the best two weeks of my life, the food was amazing, and I miss everyone!"

But I can't because: 1) The nurse had no idea that health insurance cards are protected health information (PHI) by law (HIPAA). 2) I hand-delivered 2 letters for my daughter in summer 2024. One got to her; the 2nd did not. This was a heartfelt father-daughter communication, so I complained. The registrat (AL) said she'd bring the matter to the director's (SM) attention that evening at dinner. I heard nothing. 3) I decided to stop sending my daughter and received an email from Huckins asking why. This time, I informed the director (SM) directly. She did not reply. Since their medical staff is poorly informed and their director doesn't care enough to even reply to parents, it seems fair to question whether one should entrust their child to those people. Finally, I should note that the registrar (AL) is an excellent communicator who responds quickly and fairly. She geniuinely seems to care.
