Beautiful public spaces in Julia Morgan designed building (1929) Sweet and tidy room immaculately clean. Small but serviceable. Didn't get to use the beautiful swimming pool, but will definitely plan for that next time. Breakfast is simple and unremarkable. Very convenient parking next door reasonably priced. Location adjacent to campus and Zellerbach Hall is stellar. Perfect as a beautiful wedding venue!

    Small quaint bathroom.

I wasn't expecting much more than a hotel that had a little bit of history attached to it. What I got was an experience. The Berkeley City Club was designed by Julia Morgan who had other small achievements like the Hurst castle! She built this building in 11 months and it opened in 1930 (she worked on Hurst castle for 1919 to 1947). I got the experience of staying in a building very similar in design to the Hurst castle; Beautiful Gothic Revival influences. The complimentary Continental breakfast served in Julia's Restaurant (Farm to table French restaurant) was one of the best I've had. Fresh juices, pastries, a selection of fresh fruits including pears and plums (hell, I'm lucky if the hotel has apples). They had these incredible individual eggs souffle...delicious! My room was small but very airy, thanks to being on the corner. Overall, i had a wonderful stay. I will definitely be staying here in the future if I'm working in the area. One more thing to add: the first two floors are completely open to explore and wander around. All rooms are available to check out including the event rooms, sitting areas, restaurants, patios etc.

Stayed here for my birthday weekend with the dear husband and I'm in love with this place. I felt like I was a cast in the Harry Potter's series! Room is dated but with a nice feel to it. Just how I liken I love how quaint it is and the view is fabulous! it's overlooking the bay, UC Berkeley campus and the hills! Bed is comfy! A little bit of fascinating history was this was designed by a woman architect, Julia Morgan! Super plus! +++ Staff was friendly, he was especially friendly when we were checking in. It came with a scrumptious continental breakast: quiche, hard boiled eggs, pastries, yogurt, and a slew of more goodness, but most especially, they have Peet's coffee! Indeed, I had a happy birthday! There is also an olympic pool, however between 9AM-12noon you have to make reservations and after noon, it's open for all. I would totally recommend and if given a chance, would absolutely stay here again!

Lobby area is charming, old but clean.

This architectural gem is within walking distance of Berkeley college, which is why we chose it. The interiors are spectacular, a bit reminiscent of Hogwarts. Some areas could use an update, as the place feels a little odd. However, the beautiful details, staircases, windows and courtyard make up for it. The rooms are tidy but not luxurious. The service is just ok. Front desk checkin is also odd, not terribly welcoming. The only place to store luggage was self serve and felt less than secure. I can't say I recommend leaving any valuables there. If you want something out of the ordinary and need to be near Cal, this hotel might be for you.

I took swimming lessons from Boris here when I was just 4 years old. I can still remember him. He was such a great teacher. He really taught me how to be a great swimmer because ten years later I was ranked first place in the USA for my event. He would reward me with a quarter if I did a good job. I thought that was a lot of money. With inflation that would be $2.75 today, because that was 1952. I'm glad to see that after 70 years that beautiful pool is still here. This is a beautiful club with great traditions.wish I lived closer to enjoy it once again.

Those details were a major reason I chose to pay for that particular suite. When I arrived, I was informed the suite had been oversold and I was placed into a different suite that did not match the room I reserved or the amenities advertised online. To be fair, I tried to stay understanding and keep a positive attitude during the stay. At checkout, I was told management would work with me to make things right and that I should follow up with the General Manager. Unfortunately, after four emails, multiple follow-up attempts, and two weeks of waiting, I have received no meaningful response from management. Mistakes can happen in hospitality, but ignoring a guest after promising a resolution is disappointing, especially when a premium room was booked specifically for its advertised features. I'm leaving this review mainly because the lack of communication and accountability after the stay has been far more frustrating than the original issue itself.

For those leaving negative reviews, this is a case of getting what you pay for. The biggest plus was the location, an easy walk to campus. The staff were also very accommodating, allowing me to check in early and holding my luggage for a few hours after checkout, which made a big difference. That said, it's more of a hostel-style setup. My room had a shared bathroom, the water pressure was weak, and the mini fridge was noisy enough to keep me up at night. The walls are also quite thin, so you can hear neighboring rooms. Would I stay here again? Yes, mainly for the convenience. Next time, I'd just plan ahead and book a room with a private bathroom.

I checked in at about 6pm, and there was still parking available. Being Hilton Gold got me a $55 food credit, Skittles, and bottled water. The room was cozy. The hot water got very hot instantly. The bed was comfy. Cool decor in the room. Booked with Hilton points, so only cost me $68 for parking and taxes. Cons: Most ridiculous bathroom sink ever. With a faucet that was too big for the tiny (8"x12" maybe) sink. You could not wash your hands without getting water everywhere, and washing your face meant soaking most of the bathroom. No place to put your toiletries, other than the tiny glass shelf with the extra roll of TP. Shower not intended for people over 5' 8" A little noisy, but they provided one pair of earplugs. Lights in hall would go out, but I believe they had a motion sensor. No nightstand on one side of the bed. I was not informed of the charge for parking ($40). Food credit hard to use as restaurant closes at 10 pm and 10am. But overall, not bad. I would stay here again.

We took an overnight family vacation over Labor Day weekend to celebrate Mom/Grandma's birthday…read more(three rooms, all featuring beautiful marina views). The Good: Scenic Views: Incredible views of the Berkeley Marina, San Francisco Bay, and the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance. The marina-view room was well worth the upgrade over the courtyard view. Location & Outdoor Access: Beautiful walking trails directly outside around the marina, perfect for scenic walks. The kids enjoyed the nearby park (swings, slides, monkey bars), though the Berkeley Adventure Playground was unfortunately closed for the holiday. Housekeeping Staff: The housekeeping staff was the highlight of our stay. Every member I encountered was remarkably warm, welcoming, and helpful. Family-Friendly Amenities: The kids loved the indoor pool and hot tub, and the property also features a sauna, a fitness center, and outdoor games (Cornhole) in the courtyard. 12:00 PM Check-Out: The noon check-out allowed us enough time to enjoy a morning walk and a swim before leaving. The Bad: Frustrating & Stressful Check-In: The front desk's handling of a third-party booking issue was remarkably poor. My mother booked through Expedia since it was cheaper than booking directly, which is disappointing for a Hilton Rewards member (hotels should offer the best prices directly to guests). Instead of addressing the issue immediately, staff sent my elderly mother to her room without a resolution. This resulted in multiple calls and transfers, an unanswered front desk line, and a walk back downstairs and three buildings over to handle it in person. The ordeal took nearly an hour and required speaking with a manager, ultimately leaving my mother in tears and setting an unwelcoming tone at the start of the trip. When I asked why front desk staff aren't empowered to help guests immediately with welcoming solutions, the manager offered little explanation beyond needing approval and looking visibly embarrassed. When I followed up to ask why staff didn't just ask for that approval immediately rather than sending us on a wild-goose chase for an hour, I was met with a simple shrug. Unwelcoming Room Greeting: Following the check-in ordeal, the arrival note in our room addressed to "Dear Valued Guest" focused immediately on quiet hours and no-party policies, rather than a genuine welcome, making us feel regulated rather than valued. Small Double Beds: Two-bed rooms featured full-size beds rather than queens, which felt cramped. Pool Area Maintenance & Layout: Severe lack of seating (only 8 seats for roughly 30 guests), leaving families to place belongings on wet floors. The pool ran out of towels the next morning, and the house phone in the pool area to request more was out of order. Exorbitant Parking Fees: Self-parking is $45/day ($47 for valet), which adds up drastically when traveling with multiple vehicles. Extreme Price Gouging: A small lobby market purchase (3 bottles of water and 1 Gatorade) came out to $48.50. While the cashier was sweet and apologized for the prices, the markup felt unreasonable. Final Thoughts: I would stay here again mainly for the beautiful location if the price was right, though I now know to bring my own food/beverages and manage expectations regarding service. While this property is listed as a 4-star hotel based on its amenities, and I believe any hotel has the potential to deliver 5-star service, the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Berkeley Marina ultimately operated like a 3-star hotel with 2-star service during our stay.

The host at the restaurant was unfriendly to the point where I almost walked away, although I will say that the waitress I had was very kind. I requested housekeeping multiple times during my stay. I was later told it was not completed because my "Do Not Disturb" sign was up during cleaning hours. However, during previous stays at this hotel, staff still knocked on my door to ask when they could return to clean the room, which made this explanation extremely frustrating. On two separate occasions, front desk staff told me directly that my room would be cleaned, and it never was. One front desk employee was dismissive and spoke to me with an attitude that made me feel disrespected. To make matters worse, the hotel uses automated text messages sent from "Glenda." I responded around 11:30 AM requesting housekeeping because I had work calls scheduled. I left my room for a period of time, returned to find it untouched, and later received another text stating they were unable to clean my room due to a high volume of rooms. This contradicted what I had been told earlier and was extremely disappointing. The room itself is in serious need of updates. The walls are extremely thin--I could hear doors slamming, people yelling, and even the person in the next room using the bathroom. The lack of soundproofing made it impossible to rest or work. For someone staying away from home, this was one of the worst hotel experiences I've had. I ultimately checked out early and went straight home.
