I've always wanted to stay here. Growing up in the bay, the Claremont is one of those places that you hear about because of its history. But because we lived in the bay I couldn't ever justify spending the night. But since we moved and needed to visit for an event, it provided the perfect opportunity to check this off the hotel bucket list. Service at check-in was awesome, from the valet to the front desk to the bellman that helped us by bringing our bags to our room. But then after that it was hit or miss, specifically with room service. Some of our items were forgotten so we had to ask for them, we were brought an opened bottle of half empty water, etc. and our room service food was good enough, but not great. I expected 5 star service from start to finish, especially with the price paid, and we didn't get that. So I was a bit disappointed. But the room itself was super spacious. We opted for one of the King Junior suites which had a nice view overlooking the tennis courts and a peekaboo view of the bay, which was conveniently located on the lower level with easy access to get outside. This was super important since we had our dog with us. The building is old which just adds to the charm and character of it. But the interior, specifically the room, really could use some TLC, like a fresh coat of paint and heavy dusting in all the nooks and crannies, etc. The grounds are beautiful and the hills provided stunning views and great cardio. And the property is set within walkable neighborhood, which provided shopping and dining nearby. We found our new favorite burger spot, The Station, which is located just down the street. If I had known about that place the first night I wouldn't have ordered room service. We had a really lovely interaction with concierge upon check out that left us feeling grateful for our stay and experience. read more

Not as nice as I expected. Having lived in the Bay Area for years and driving by The Claremont daily, I think my expectations were set a tad too high. I was expecting more luxury than what I experienced. The hotel lobby was nice. It was beautifully decorated for the arrival of the Australian World Cup team. Outside of that, I was unimpressed. Walking through the hallways of the hotel, you can tell that it is super old. The paint was peeling off the walls and there was a lingering, musty smell throughout which was a bit disappointing. The outside spaces weren't terrible. The way the resort is built into the hills is beautiful. The steps down the tennis courts have a fantastic view. There are two pools available for lounging and lap swim, and one tiny whirl pool with fountains for kids. There is also a large spa/hot tub outside too. I came by at the beginning of summer so, as expected, there were kids running around everywhere. If you are interested in lap swimming, luckily, the smaller pool was frequently available. The temperature was perfect for a hot summer day. There were plenty of lounge chairs available, but they felt cheaply made. Everyone in my group had issues adjusting them without disconnecting the backrest from the seat. The locker room was nice. There is a small lounge area with a TV, hundreds of pin-lock lockers, and every amenity you may need. There were many Dyson hair dryer stations, lotion, dry shampoo, mousse, feminine products, mouth wash, and more. Towels were constantly restocked and were quite large and plush. The showers were a bit small and the shampoo and conditioner didn't feel as lush as I had expected. Connected to the locker room was the spa, with a large hot tub, sauna, and steam room. I really enjoyed these spaces! The poolside service from the restaurant was nice. If you order from the Bay View Restaurant, they will give you a buzzer and bring the food to your lounge chair. The food however, was disappointing. We ordered a Caesar Salad, Nachos, and Burger. The nachos were just sad. It felt like slop. The cheese wasn't even warmed. The salad was pretty good and well-dressed. The burger was tiny, dry, and did not even come with any sides. The bar was alright. The drinks were very expensive but small and not the strongest. I ordered a margarita since they don't have a blender or mint. I wish they would have had more tropical drink options considering it is a poolside bar during the summer. The bartenders were super fun though! They were having a blast and playing great music. Overall, I had a good experience, but it was not as nice as I had anticipated. read more

I came here for a girls trip and stayed the weekend. The lobby area by the elevators smelled of rotten cooked fish. Like an entree was accidentally spilled but not shampooed out. Upon arriving the room was not ready even though we arrived at 3pm. We made reservations for spa treatments. Arriving at the spa early, we realized the spa didn't have amenities so we just hung out for an hour before our massages. I asked if we can have champagne delivered prior to treatment and the attendant frowned and said that wasn't possible. Once arriving into the treatment room, it was so cold. My friends said their rooms were also cold. I would guess 67 degrees. The masseuse was kind and well trained but she couldn't change the thermostat. Even though the bed was heated, as soon as sheet was lifted I was shivering. Thankfully she kept giving me warm rocks to try to heat my body. After the massage, the spa attendant mentioned we can use amenities at "the club" located on the opposite side of the property. Upon going there for jacuzzi, steam room and sauna, I noticed how there was barely any maintenance. The jacuzzi had so much chlorine that our eyes burned, the steam room wasn't scrubbed well, and the women's facility had wet hair on the floor including the showers. It was disgusting. Having been to many spas in hotels across the US. This was possibly the worst. As for the room, the decor was very nice and the bathroom was a good size. Unfortunately our heating and cooling did not work. The engineer came up to our room twice to try to fix and the told us to just open the window as the hotel is "old and has a lot of issues with HVAC". Hotel is great, but the Club is not. Quit after the math stopped making sense. Monthly dues went from about $600 to almost $900 in two and a half years, and the product did not come along for the ride. The only thing that appreciated faster than my dues was my resentment. If you have kids and want a pretty hillside place to park them while you sit down for 20 minutes, this club will feel like a win. If you actually want to train, play competitive tennis, or use a locker room that behaves like a locker room, it does not. The women's tennis scene tops out around 3.5-4.0, even when the self-ratings say otherwise. You'll have more competitive matches against a wall. The weight room looks the part until you notice the mismatched plates, barbells left wherever the last person dropped them, and a machine selection that belongs to a cheaper gym from a previous decade. The sauna is kept politely lukewarm so nobody gets a complaint card from the early-bird crowd. The social energy is less "athletic club" and more "nice retirement community that also has a pool." A small, very confident & vocal group of legacy members who would like everything to stay exactly as it was, except the dues. Women's locker room note, because it matters at this price: people regularly skip the shower before the hot tub, sauna, and steam, then leave towels and used personal items around like the attendant is their housekeeper. That is not a $900/month standard. Vibe: Assisted living with a smoothie bar. Very peaceful, if that's what you're after (except if its summer, when all you'll hear are children screaming). Beautiful setting. Inflated price. Soft sports. Dated gym. Country-club manners without the country-club execution. Fine if your main goal is childcare-with-a-view. Not fine if you joined to get stronger, play hard, or feel like the dues bought you a well-run club. read more

This property is very beautiful. The staff are attentive and very friendly. The grounds are stunning as well. We had a bay view room which was amazing. But unfortunately the room wasn't very clean. I mean obviously it was 'clean' but stains on the carpet, gross spills on the walls (especially near the trashcan) and the ottoman at the end of the bed was torn. Just not what you would expect from a $500 + a night stay. I was disappointed in the condition of the room. With that said overall we had a nice stay and would come back again. Varied experience. As a family, its pretty good. The kid zone is excellent. It's a bit of a walk from the lobby but it's worth it. Our 2 kids, 3 and 6 were glabber blasted when they walked in. Millions of toys, crayons, etc, and a stable trust worthy supervisor. The rest is okay, they have preference to certain races, ages, and genders. My parents (white) got their room before checkin. My wife and I, (I'm Filipino) did not get privilage to our room even though we showed up at the same time and our rooms were side by side. My daughter, (3) got in my wife's boots and stomped around for 3 minutes at 8:00pm. We recieved a call with a complaint. Security guards showed up at our room. They knocked I said ya, I got it, then we got a call from the front desk reguarding to us partying. We also did not recieve the water I called and asked for. I went down there and asked where I can buy a water they said "do you even know what room you're in?" No, I dont, because I have two kids, toddlers. We make over $500k but we like being treated like we're babies. The view of SF is solid. read more

Showed up here to check in for my reservation that had been confirmed for two months. Upon arrival the manager said they couldn't find my reservation and didn't have my contact information to reach out to me. Both blatant lies. I got "walked" to a lesser hotel because the management here decided to not honor guests' reservations in favor of a last minute event/room booking for Hasidic Jews. The room service food here is also the worst food I've ever tasted in my life. The "NY strip steak frites" was the cheapest quality meat I've ever seen, with no sear whatsoever. The myoglobin from the beef seeped out and pooled at the bottom of the food, mixing with the sauce making the whole dish look disgusting. The location is beautiful and overlooks the Bay, with fine dining on site, and comfortable rooms. The beds are firm, comfortable and the temperature control made it a cozy stay. We stayed at the Claremont Resort this past weekend and we loved our experience. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted immediately by Valet, checked in and made our way to our room with was lovely. Amazing view of the bay and the property. A dessert tray was delivered which we enjoyed immediately. Spacious room, lovely personal note welcoming us for our daughter's graduation from UC Berkeley. We enjoyed room service twice and it was delivered perfectly, warm and lots of options. We then dined at the restaurant for a celebratory dinner and the experience was 5 star from service to food, everything was perfect! I stayed here for a work event during a heat wave and I was excited to check out the three pools that is one their signature amenities. I checked in at 4pm on a Friday and found the pool to be packed with people. The lap pool where I hoped to get some exercise was reserved for the UC Berkeley swim team. It seems the pool is open to the public which is great, but not great for hotel guests. The water was murky likely from all the dead skin cells and children peeing in the pool. The view from the bedroom was a shingled roof, and the iron left black streaks on my white shirt. Everything else however, was outstanding. The service was tremendous, including the manager, who gave me a $50 credit for the stained shirt. The food served was also delicious and the views around the hotel were fabulous. Overall, I would recommend never staying in the hotel. It was about $350 plus a $25 resort fee and another $35 for parking. I find that to be sort of expensive for a view of a shingled roof from the bedroom and a murky pool. read more

The hotel itself is beautiful and well decorated - there are lots of nooks and crannies to explore. Rooms are small but remodeled, quite a bit of scuffs on walls though. Bathroom is tiny but functional with high end finishes. The property is 19th century so of course the musty smell follows you but is not overwhelming. Lovely gym, decent pool although outside and cold (also - open to the public so prepare for lap swimmers and loud kids). Ongoing construction was loud and unsightly. My bathroom was missing the shower gel, which was never replenished during my stay. This review is long overdue. My favorite hotel.. ever. And I've stayed at many. I also like their sister hotel the Fairmont in San Francisco. I've stayed here more than a handful of times and sometimes I bring my dog Mia!! Always treats for her at the front desk. All the rooms I've stayed In had all different floor plans with views and without. Some with luxurious soaking tubs. Beds are comfortable. Rooms clean. An inspiring space where I sometimes create my artwork! Staff very warm. When I feel like treating myself not too far from home I stay here. Last time I had an amazing massage for my birthday at their spa downstairs! So truly amazing I was so happy and relaxed!! So many things to highlight about this hotel.. I always feel welcome from check-in to checkout. Always treating me like an honored guest. They make a great house coffee at their on-site restaurant Limewood with a view. I heard this hotel is haunted but I have not encountered anything supernatural at any of my stays. That's some fun lore! I like that it's close to shopping on College Ave. When I have to work during the day I sometimes bring my laptop to the lounge area with a view! There is a cafe downstairs serves some good pastries. You can enjoy your coffee and sunbathe on their back grassy lawn by the tennis courts. The hotel is walking distance to Fournée Bakery, the Station for burgers, and Peet's. Room service is great. I always order a steak or a burger with French Fries and they never disappoint. It's hard for me to leave every time!! Life is good when you stay here. I want to go back right now! Hotel itself is great! Beds were comfortable . It has smaller rooms but since hotel is more than a 100 years old it's to be expected. Very clean. Food at the restaurant this time around was really good. Club is awesome. Since it is an experience not just a place to sleep and eat , service always is one of the main attractions. Service here I would say doesn't match 5* hotel. Peculiar part is consistently sub par service. Everywhere you go it's the same. Though people are not mean or rude or say something inappropriate not that but they are lacking enthusiasm and professionalism. In Limewood all waiters are older people. May be busy nights exhaust them but we repeatedly got servers who were older men and had such exhausted expression on their faces that you can't help but feel bad for them. At the very least you expect to get a good night's sleep when you pay over $1,000 for 2 nights at any hotel, let alone a luxury hotel. But be forewarned, when a hotel refuses to invest in their air conditioning system, you are doomed to spend a sleepless night in a 78 degree room. Even the maintenance man, nice as he was, couldn't work any magic on their antiquated system, except suggesting we open the lone window to its maximum 5" gap. What a waste of money. 8 years ago I gave myself a little treat and got a full on fancy facial! First sat at the bar and had a Kir Royal, then straight to the spa! Had a soak in the really cool spa tub that used to be a staple during that full incredible experience! It has since closed but hopefully it will be back by popular demand. You know, the pool scene from Mrs Doubtfire? Filmed right here Hahaa. After I woke up from my facial I was glowing. Went downstairs to a local trunk show featuring absolutely gorgeous gemstone earrings and bracelets from a South Bay designer. Beautiful gold and lilac tourmaline chandelier earrings! Pretty good price point as well! Miss the old days. Le labo Rose 31, was the signature soap and lotion they had. And really cute makeup bags in the gift shop! read more

We stayed here over the 4th. The pools are salt water. So nice. Beautiful gym and huge spin room/classses too. Fun for kids. We got a decent rate last minute thru Expedia. Small rooms but comfy bed. Stupid expensive'resort' fee and parking extra, but par for course. They had kid activities- and great live music by the pool and in the lounge. Nicest staff and gorgeous historic hotel in great shape. Mostly I was happy to lap swim in a salt water pool. And the jacuzzi in the spa was perfect, with the exception of a couple of young women with their phone in locker room spa jacuzzi taking selfies - hopefully staff are proactive and remind guests NO phones out in the locker room facilities. Maybe provide privacy bags to every guest as they remind them to put their damn phones away for the privacy of other guest. F'ing 'influencers' are obnoxious. read more

Management unilaterally imposes rules without regard to members' satisfaction and frequently raises dues way beyond what is reasonable, now over $800 per month. Stayed two nights at Claremont Resort & Club. Customer Service was minimal at best. The staff while friendly, never went out of their way to increase the customer experience. Our housekeeping team didn't empty the trash or take the used coffee cups from the room. The hotel lotion was empty. When asked for a replenishment, no one returned with the lotion. Upon check out, the front desk staff didn't inquire about our stay. We were not aware of the $50 a day resort fee. Overall, the stay was pleasant, bed was comfortable but didn't exceed my expectations for a 5 Star hotel. read more

All I'm gonna say is-definitely do not eat at the Claremont. Food was so bad. Who puts a porterhouse pork chop on the menu how deceiving is that especially for $50. Way overcooked. Side dishes were inappropriate for the entrees. Oysters were fishy. Deep fried cod was fishy and the batter was greasy and fell right off the dark looking fish that was supposed to be cod. The filet mignon we ordered medium... it came completely cold and raw. Looked like Aji tuna raw. Of course the room wasn't ready even though we notified them we were going to be early and they said they would have it ready ... it wasn't and this is on a Wednesday.... for $500 a night. the room was like half the size of my bedroom at home. The bathroom was bigger than the room. i give it a 7.2 out of 10. but i gave it 2 stars on here cause it was not above average. $900 for a room and a meal that wasnt eaten lol. what a complete travesty of an experience. read more

While the website clearly states that this service is included in the parking fee, parking staff said I'd need to valet (an additional $20 or so. Desk said that wasn't accurate, but that I'd have to give my keys to valet and they'd call me to move my car once charging period was over. Too much work for such an expensive hotel. Do better. - Brunch at the restaurant was horrific. Our group waited an hour only to be seated on the patio in the shade in 45-degree weather with no functional patio heaters on a breezy morning. Service took forever. Coffee was cold. Many of our entrees had hairs in them. Food quality did not come close to matching the price. - Front desk fixated on upselling. Summary: Recommend for people with disposable income who don't intend on eating on-site and who have no other options -- short stays only. Be prepared to be disappointed somehow. read more

It is always a challenge to update a historic property and honor the integrity of the building. Whoever chose the decor missed the mark. It all felt disjointed. Not sure where you would find a decent view from this property as it is either a view of the extensive HVAC system on the roof or the Golden Gate Bridge obliterated by the lights of the tennis courts. For a holiday tea there was NOTHING holiday about it. Not a wreath, Xmass tree, music, Christmas decoration - nothing. I wanted to make this an annual event and bring more ppl next time but other than our server who was lovely, there was nothing about this the that was great. It took forever, there wasn't even a 4 person set up for us ready when we got there! Tea isn't hard and neither is adding a festive touch. I loved the Claremont spa but now they have closed the hot tub and deluge shower and are directing you across the parking lot to the gym to their hot tub. A large reason I come to this spa, when there are so many others in the area, is for the hot tub and deluge shower, the whole day spa experience. I came here with my daughters to have a relaxing day at the spa. I am so disappointed. I should have been informed when I booked the appointment. I made it clear that I was a returning customer as I live in the area. Sadly I won't be back. There is just no reason to pay more for a day spa experience when it just isn't anymore. When we arrived, our prepaid hotel room had been sold again and we had no room!! They wanted to put us in a lesser room and just give us hotel credits for the difference. We demanded a complete refund and we then got another room - without a view and a handicap room. In between they tried to give us a room opposite the elevators. They have a cute shop - East Bay Provisions - where you can grab a coffee and a bite to eat. However, the waiting time is forever. There is one person only and he has to heat things up, make specialty coffees etc. Pathetic! We were there for Thanksgiving weekend and this is when they decide to decorate for Xmas! Hordes of people and they are placing decorations and setting up trees. Either do it before or after but not when you have a full house. read more

We made reservations here for my boyfriend's birthday which we've done many times before. But this time was very different. It started from the lackluster front desk service, the deplorable public restrooms for the resort, the waitress for Limewood saying that she was sick while serving food, the room we paid for was a quarter the size and without the view or bed size we paid for. When I went to Nema the "manager" to discuss, she promised a complimentary massage and when I went to check out she denied it and said I misunderstood. When one pays for the Claremont level experience and basic understanding of business in a service industry is not followed and promises are not kept, it shows. When the Fairmount ran it, we went numerous times and always had an amazing experience. At breakfast on a Sunday morning they had only two waitresses working and we waited 25 minutes for the check despite trying to get the attention of anyone. Also, both days when we went to watch the World Cup at Limewood it was freezing inside and clearly everyone was cold and the door was left open. When we called for the bellhop to pick up our luggage the woman arrived in platform heels and told us to load our own luggage. We will never come back again. It's a shame because this used to be an urban gem but there were too many things that were basic that did not happen. From the DOO Sarah Sims to the manager Nema, there was no interest in providing the customer service that a place like this demands. Such a disappointment. Breath of Clarity Body Polish- At the Spa- get there early/ steam- then nosh on some treats in the quiet area- Breath of Clarity = Pure Spa Bliss I had the Breath of Clarity Body Polish at The Claremont Spa and WOW. The aroma of eucalyptus and sweet marjoram immediately relaxed me and the soufflé scrub made my skin feel baby-soft. The therapist was wonderful and so attentive. But the best part -- the Vichy shower! So cool and so relaxing. It felt like warm rain washing over me and I never wanted it to end. The scalp massage was dreamy and my entire body felt brand new afterward. Highly, highly recommend. 10/10! read more
