The Mrs. and I spent last night at the East Brother Light Station. When she told me that we were staying at a lighthouse that was a bed and breakfast I had some reservations. I'm not a huge B & B fan even though we've stayed in a few. We arrived at the predetermined time and location. Said location being San Pablo Harbor which is located near Richmond. The harbor has plenty of parking and it is safe to leave your vehicle. We waited in a small seating area near the Sailing Goat restaurant. Soon, the rest of our fellow guests arrived. We all chatted for a bit before our boat arrived to take us to East Brother Island. The boat named Lucretia was manned by our hosts Dre and Charity. They loaded the six of us and our bags, four people had to stay behind to be picked up shortly thereafter. Getting to the island was an adventure. The ride took about ten minutes. The island the lighthouse sits on is only 3/4 of an acre. It has three structures on it, a water storage tank and a cistern that is only fed by rainwater. There is no water supplied from the mainland. The lighthouse is a stately old Victorian house with a lot of character. The inside is decorated with period pieces. The first floor holds two guest rooms, a bathroom, the gift shop, dining room, and the kitchen. The ONLY shower that is in the house is located in the bathroom which is only accessible from the dining room. The two guest rooms share that bathroom. The second door holds the parlor, game room, and two guest rooms. The rooms are named for their view. We stayed in the San Francisco room which had an incredible view from the bedroom window. It also had its own toilet and sink. The bed and linens were very comfortable. At 4 p.m. Dre rings a bell that summons everyone to the roundtable on the grounds for champagne and charcuterie. Then at six he rings it again for dinner. Dre is the chef and Charity provides the table service. For dinner we had tomato bisque, salad with strawberries and almonds, Coc Au Vin Blanc with saffron rice and green beans, and cheesecake for dessert. All of the food was really good. For breakfast we had Dre's homemade quiche with potatoes and toast. There really isn't much, if anything, to do on the island. It was nice to socialize with the other guests but at times I was exhausted. Nothing against them that is just my personality. After breakfast Dre took us out to Walter's workshop and demonstrated the fog horn for us. Just the mechanics of it all was fascinating. Dre and Charity are incredible hosts. Dre will tell you a lot of Dad jokes which are hilarious. Overall we were on the island for 24 hours and it was an incredible experience. Probably a once in a lifetime experience. read more

At last after decades of dreaming, this bucket list item is finally crossed off the list. Celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary this was the perfect gift. We had no idea what to expect. It was more than we could ever have imagined. We enjoyed the most perfect autumn weather. So that was an absolute stroke of luck. Tides were in our favor and the boat trip to and from the islands were comfortable. Innkeepers Danielle and Rae (seven months new to this gig) are/were incredible hosts, tour guides, chefs, and comics. We were the only guests spending two nights and so glad we opted for that. Enjoyed a beautiful view from our second-story room - West Brother Island and the raucous comings and goings of the island birds was incredible. Breakfast, happy hour, and dinner were more than enough and so delicious. And we enjoyed the company of other guests - many Bay Area locals but also from San Diego and Illinois. If you're a wildlife and nature lover, put this a the top of your list. Not only a wide range of birds, but also Harbor Seals, Sea Lions, and Harbor Porpoise were seen on our visit. read more

The East Brother Light Station is such a unique gem to the East Bay. An amazing birthday gift, my friends and I were transported to the East Brother island by boat from the Point San Pablo Yacht Harbor with our luggage in tow. (This is set up by the InnKeepers) Once we arrived, we were greeted by a glass of sparkling & delicious snacks. The Innkeepers showed us to our rooms as we met the other over night guests we would share dinner and breakfast with the following morning. A tour of the grounds and learning about the rich history of the island/light station was also included in the experience. Overall, this was a once in a lifetime trip right in our very backyard! Sharing this unique space with others and getting to know them through meals & activities was so genuine. My wife found a review of this place on the L.A. Times Website and liked it so much she decided to celebrate her birthday here. This is an operating Lighthouse in San Francisco Bay that also serves as a Bed & Breakfast. So You meet at the prescribed time at the dock near the Sailing Goat Restaurant. The boat arrives at that time and whisks you off for a 10 minute trip to the island. We were welcomed about by a very nice couple. The Captain of the boat goes by the name Dre and his great First Mate goes by the name Charity. He is a certified US Coast Guard Boat Captain as required by law. Together they make up the Hospitality Team that treat you like royalty when you get to the island. Upon arrival at the island you have to climb the ladder to get off the boat and walk up the path to the house. We were a group of four so they left us alone on the island to wander whilst they went back to the harbor to pick up the other six guests. It's a very nicely kept place with lots to do. There's five different rooms available. The two on the main floor share a bathroom. The two on the second floor have a bathroom in the room. The final guest room is in the mechanical building and it's named Walter's Room. Charity took us on a brief tour when everyone arrived to show us all the places and things to do on the grounds. You have full privileges to roam about the island - in all the buildings - except the one or two that indicate otherwise. They advise you that notifications for meals, etc. are done with a bell. There's a big courtyard with a cistern in the middle. There is no fresh water delivered here - all the water is from rain water captured, stored and filtered. The island is small enough that you can easily view about 360 Degrees. You can see the City of San Francisco, the Golden Gate and Richmond bridge. There are sea lions and seals swimming about and sleeping on a big rock close to you. Charity and Dre are the hosts and they take their responsibilities seriously. They are two of the nicest people you have ever met. They provided excellent service with attention to detail. And they take care of the facilities as well - which were very clean and organized. Around 4:30p the bell rang and it was time for "Happy Hour." We all gathered around the round table in the courtyard and were treated to a charcuterie board and champagne for each couple. It was a very elegant snack and very tasty. After that we sat around the table and enjoyed the company of the other couples and there was some more wine available to sip. About 6p The dinner bells rang and we all migrated to the dining room. A big long table for ten people - we all found a place to sit. Dinner is served in courses. Lentil soup was first and was followed by a green salad with strawberries. The main course was salmon with remoulade, served with roasted asparagus and saffron rice. Dessert was cheesecake. The food was excellent. Everything was VERY Good! The best part of dinner was the conversation had by the group. We had a GREAT time at the table, eating the food and talking to one another. There was little bit of wine shared at the table as well. Dre does the cooking and Charity provides awesome table service. This includes refilling water and wine glasses whenever they need it. After dinner you're free to do whatever you choose. In addition to the guest rooms there's a game room, living room, horseshoe pit, basketball court, etc. There are all kinds of books, record and reading material about this and other lighthouses. The breakfast bell rang at 8:30a. Again, we all made our way to the Dining Room to enjoy our breakfast of quiche, potatoes and fruit. Breakfast was very good - as was the coffee and again, Charity was taking good care of us. After breakfast you're free to do whatever you want until it's time to get back on the boat to go home. This was an AWESOME EXPERIENCE!! Charity and Dre really made us feel at home, like it was THEIR HOME! I have to say that this is the best B&B that I've ever been to. My man talked about this island every time we drove on the bridge, so I said, "We should check it out sometime!" He then surprised me and booked one night for my birthday! I didn't know what to expect, I should've done a quick research before we got there. I knew we were going to get picked up by a boat at 4 pm, but that was it. When the boat stopped on the island, we were to climb up a ladder and there were a lot more steps toward the house. I realized I should've worn sneakers instead of high-heeled boots! It was nice to watch the sunset while we enjoyed a charcuterie board and champagne. They offered wine afterward. Then dinner came soon - no need to dress up! The three-course meal was fun with everyone sharing a communal table. The dessert was my favorite! The Lemon Posset with Berries was new to me, but it was similar to Pana Cota. The bedroom was comfortable. There was a couple who complained about being cold all night, but we were fine since the innkeeper helped us with the fireplace. I think our room was the only one that had a fireplace, but most of the guests didn't complain about the cold. Breakfast was great! I would like to make the egg with spinach in a little ramekin at home. It looked simple to make but really tasty! The blueberry muffin was my other fave. So scrumptious! When it was time to leave, I was relieved that the boat was raised up for the women so we didn't have to climb down the steps. They lowered it down for the men, though. It was windy and cold, but it was worth it for the breathtaking views, delicious meals, and fun experience. What an awesome birthday adventure!! read more

We had an AMAZING time this weekend! Dre and Charity were so nice and made us feel very welcome. After we got to the island, each couple received a DELICIOUS charcuterie board and champagne or sparking cider. Later, they served us a 4 course dinner that was also so delicious! We could also drink as much wine as we wanted. In the morning, the fruit and homemade quiche were amazing, and they provided juice and bottomless coffee. The island was BEAUTIFUL! We stayed in Walter's Quarters in the old fog horn building, and the view from the room was BEAUTIFUL!!! The innkeepers provided bottled water and 2 chocolates in the room, and each room had 2 complimentary tote bags for us to take home. There was a sink in the room, but the bathroom for Walter's Quarters was across the old fog horn room, but it did not feel like an issue at all (see pictures). Overall, our stay was PERFECT, and beyond our expectations! Highly recommended!!! read more

I had such a terrific time at the lighthouse with my mother for her belated Mother's Day/birthday present. This not-so-hidden gem is absolutely spectacular in its views, the quaint ambiance, its history, and the phenomenal partners that are currently running it - Stephanie and Bryan. They're so knowledgeable and personable. The binoculars in our room were such a great finishing touch, as well. Not to mention, the food is amazing!!! It was all home made! We had a delicious appetizer, followed by a dinner of lentil soup, (so good even my mom liked it - who normally hates lentils) stuffed mushrooms, sole, and an English version of a Panna Cotta. Breakfast the next morning was a spinach and egg souffle-type concoction, fresh fruit, almond cake, and fried tomatoes. I cannot emphasize enough what a wonderful place this is! We had seen (and then researched) this place you can see when you cross the Richmond Bridge. Apparently, it had some recent (world-wide) press when they were looking for new innkeepers. The new innkeepers are Tiffany and Tyler. Tiffany is a bit shy and runs the kitchen. Tyler is more outgoing and runs the hardware and the boat. They are both super sweet and didn't make it obvious that they must get the exact same questions from every person who visits. If you stay only one night - they do not what you to use the shower since water is limited. And the people who get the downstairs rooms do need to share a bathroom. They pick you up on the dock at a specified time. It was unfortunate that it was pretty rough when they picked p up and we got soaking wet on the maybe 8 min boat ride to the island. So - don't be like us - bring a spare pair of pants! - And I might suggest that Tyler gets a few rain ponchos for days like these. The inn is super cute (5 rooms total) - and my hubby paid the extra money for them to have champagne and chocolates waiting for us in our room. Once you arrive you have about an hour or so to walk around the island. The dinner menu is posted in the dining room when you arrive. If you have dietary restrictions, they ask for them about a week before b/c they only shop 1x per week via boat. They ring a bell and appetizers are served upstairs. There were about 6 things - 1 piece per person. Then everyone gathers downstairs at a communal table for dinner. They serve you a choice of wines with dinner. And Tiffany is smart about planning these, so some things can be made up ahead - The soup and dessert for example. After dinner you can walk around the island - play games in the parlor, or just rest in your rooms. Breakfast bell rings at 9am. Tiffany makes some kick-ass granola!!!. Also served with an egg dish, some fresh muffins and yogurt. What a fun little local trip - but it ain't cheap. I didn't ask how much - but I am guessing the range is about $400/night. read more

This was our second time staying at the lighthouse and it was fantastic. We were lucky enough to have really nice weather and fantastic views. Once you get off the boat and square away your luggage, you are greeted with some wonderful hors d'oeuvres and some champagne. Not only were Brian and Stephanie our hosts charming and funny but we got to sit around and talk to the other guests, which I think is one of the real charms of the stay. After the hors d'oeuvres, we had time to explore including the actual lighthouse widows walk, which is often not open in other lighthouses. We were treated to a really excellent dinner including sole wrapped around dungeness crab, an asparagus tart, and strawberry shortcake. All really well prepared. We had great conversation at the family style table with the other 8 guests. I found the bed very comfortable and although the fog horn played in the background you also heard the ocean. I ending up sleeping very well. It also helped that my wife brought a small white noise machine - so that might be a tip for those who are concerned. Breakfast excellent and filling with plenty of coffee. At 10:30, Brian came out and gave us a very interesting historical talk and talked about some of the challenges that the lighthouse faces to stay open and maintained. Brian even fires up the diesel engine and pump to sound the fog whistle - be warned, it is load - but they give you ear protection. At 11:00 am we got on the boat to return to Pt. San Pablo. I am sure we will return soon and really salute Brian and Stephanie for how hard they work and their clear love of the lighthouse and care for their guests. read more

For years, whenever my husband and I would drive across the Richmond / San Rafael bridge we would say someday we should stay at the lighthouse b&b. Why did we wait so long???? What fun! Hosts Stephanie and Bryan were beyond terrific. Food was phenomenal. The history was fascinating. And loved watching the birds and sea lions. Views in all directions were spectacular. We stayed here in 2018. Completely lovely and worthwhile. You get to take a boat there from the quaint nearby marina. The friendly & gracious hosts are amazing people of all trades, including that of gourmet chefs and very interesting tour guides. The food was wonderful. We stayed in the Marin room which includes its own private bathroom. (No baths allowed if you stay only one night-to conserve water) The view of the ocean is amazing and the sounds of the swells crossing each other is so soothing & wonderful. (The bed did not seem as large as a king as stated in the description). One night is ample because the island is small. There's a gift shop and just seeing this beautiful home is a privilege and delight. read more

I booked one night here for a surprise getaway with my partner and we had an incredible time.make sure to plan ahead for me traffic and other delays as the boat will pick up the entire group promptly at 4pm. Brian and Stephanie were incredible hosts and very interesting people with so many travel stories. When we got to the island we were greeted by the most incredible sunset, wine, and a snack platter. It really doesn't get much better than that when it comes to b&b experiences. They provide blankets to hang out but I would recommend packing warm clothes as it can get chilly with the wind at night. After snacks we were seated for dinner and had a great time with the very interesting group of fellow guests. I feel like this is the type of place to attract amazing people with unique life and travel experience because we met some incredible people during our stay. Lots of fun conversation over wine ended up with an impromptu game night as they have lots of board games in the parlor and we got to go up into the lighthouse to see the light and island at night. Very cool experience. Next morning we had an amazing breakfast and got a history lesson of the island, light house and life of the light house keepers. Overall it was just an amazing experience and I would highly recommend coming here. I feel like a one night stay is enough as the island is very small and easily explored in a few hours. FYI it's mainly an adults only experience unless you rent the entire b&b. Sharing bathroom with guests was never an issue and it was very well stocked and so clean. This was the most amazing surprise trip I've ever experienced, so close to home! (Napa) Next thing I know, my happy belly's the passenger down an old dirt path in the middle of nowhere, along the waters edge somewhere near Berkeley. We grab our backpacks, strap on life jackets, and in the blink of an eye, I'm on a boat shared with 4 other couples. Ten minutes later we arrive at what looks to be an island. I climb up the ladder covered in mussels, and lo and behold, our first Bed and Breakfast experience. On an island. In a lighthouse. On the San Francisco Bay. An hour before sunset. We learned the history of the lighthouse (which I encourage everyone to read about), toured around, took these amazing pictures, and at sunset (about an hour in), toasted with champagne and amazingly delicious hors d'oeuvres. We changed into comfy clothes to prepare for a relaxing evening and an amazing dinner without cell service. My guest chose the room with the fireplace because we both love a real-lit fire. We were given an overnight stay at the East Brother Light Station by my in-laws after they discovered that there is a climb up a ladder from a rocking boat, my father-in-law is 90 years old and didn't think he could manage it. We loved every bit of our stay on the island and the lovely 1873 Victorian Lighthouse. The innkeepers were wonderful. Our first evening we were greeted with wine and hors d'oeuvres, followed by a dinner so impressive we felt like we were at a fine dining restaurant. We enjoyed quiet time on the island exploring, beautiful views of the bay, Marin County, Mount Tamalpais, explored the Lighthouse, and were given a tour and told the history of the island. Our room was quite cute and cozy with not a sound except for the wind outside the window. The next morning we were met with fresh brewed coffee while we waited for breakfast.....another meal that did not disappoint. You meet at the Gallery Cafe, about 11:15am (where we had good soup-by the way), then the captain takes you to the island on a boat, then you climb up some stairs. Truly a great experience. I started to get a bit nervous when the hosts had trouble docking the boat because the tide was so strong but I shouldn't have been. Dre and Charity were marvelous hosts and very experienced. The lighthouse is gorgeous and the views amazing. I am a vegan and I wasn't expecting very much on the food front but Dre is a wonderful Chef and served some of the best vegan food I have had in the Bay Area. I stayed two nights and I highly recommend it. I didn't realize that dining was communal and it got a bit rowdy for me but I'm glad I didn't know that before I booked as that might have put me off. Dinner guests are everything! But, I'm glad I did. The first night's co-guests were super and interesting. The second night's guest ..well, not so interesting. It's expensive so probably why people don't stay two nights and want to party over dinner but it's fun and unique. I even met a very distant cousin ..how amazing is that! read more

I found the East Brother Light Station in line some time ago and finally got around to visiting. We went for my wife's birthday and it was a total surprise to her. She didn't know EBLS even existed. There was one other couple staying at the same time as us, whom we met at the Finer Diner. When Tyler greeted us, he immediately wished my wife a happy birthday! It is a very short boat ride to the EBLS island, maybe 10 mins (probably less). We were greeted by Tiffany at the dock and she provided a quick tour and some FAQ's history lesson. The other couple was staying in Walter's Quarters and we stayed in the San Francisco Room (named for their views). So, we had the whole Victorian house to ourselves! We got settled in and checked out the island and sights. Then, it was time for hors d'oeurves and champagne in the parlor. The champagne was good quality and the food was great! A nice little snack! Tiffany and Tyler do a great job trying to match food preferences and making everyone happy! We had the opportunity to chat with Tyler about the job hunt and how they landed such a unique gig. After the bubbles and snack, I took to reading some of the history books about the island and west coast light houses. For dinner, they served Field Recordings wine, salad, soup, chicken dish and dessert. It was an amazing feast! Everyone sits together at the communal table. Because we only had two couples, Tiffany and Tyler were able to interact with us a little more, which I especially appreciated. After dinner we sat outside and checkout out the lighthouse. Then, we drank wine and played games in the sitting room (just outside the San Francisco Room). The fog horn was on, but we did not notice it in our room, except for a few times. We woke up to a beautiful and calm bay! Coffee is out at 7AM and breakfast at 9AM. They served fruit, yogurt, homemade granola to start; then, omelets, chicken sausage, avocado toast and banana walnut scones! It was too much food, but I was not going to pass anything up! After breakfast was a history talk from Tyler, he answered our questions and then a dog horn demonstration! We got all cleaned up and left the island. We discussed staying for two nights next time. We loved it and will definitely come back! Tiffany and Tyler were great hosts and I think they were the perfect choice for the EBLS! When I booked the trip, I thought there would be more down time, but there really wasn't. I would prefer staying two nights. I honestly don't think one night was enough, even for the 3/4 acre island! read more

Once in a GREAT while something blows my mind. This did. Okay so I can't give all the credit to East Brother Lighthouse - the fact that Boyfriend TOTALLY surprised me with an overnight here for my birthday this past summer: Blew My Mind. (He's not a big "surpriser".) But the amazing place he chose to take me to was so much more exciting and novel than any ole B&B (which I'm sure he could not get excited about either). East Brother Light Station is an old lighthouse built into the top of a Victorian house. The house (and a couple cottages for the innkeepers, and a machine shop which houses the fog-horn) sit on an island about a square mile in size. The island is in the southern part of San Pablo Bay; a stone's throw from shore. East Brother Lighthouse B&B is "The Man's Bed & Breakfast" - absolutely no joke. No, there's no Sunday football or all you can drink beer but to get there involves a (super short) treacherous boat trip and once you arrive there's machinery & lighthouses to learn about, dogs to play with, history to read and fog horns to marvel at! In fact, the night Boyfriend surprised me - it turned out 2 of the 3 other couples on the boat with us were being surprised by the male half of the couple too! So here's how it works (tho Eric G. put it in much funnier words than I will here...) Elan and Katy are the innkeepers. Katy cooks and cleans and Elan runs the boat and light (and fog horn). You and 3-4 other couples meet Elan in the Point San Pablo Yacht Harbor (though it looks like a junkyard) and climb into a little speed boat. Now I practically get seasick in the bathtub but this boat ride is so short that even though it can be treacherous and bumpy (or if you're a man: awesome!) it didn't bother me at all. You're literally in the boat on the Bay for about 2 minutes. You dock and (perhaps depending on tides) climb up a ladder to be welcomed by Katy! The ladder could be a bit difficult to maneuver for folks with limited mobility. After a tour of the house and island you're free to frolic. We climbed up to the light tower to check out the amazing views of the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge and prowled around the very small island taking some fantastic photos. A small champagne and hors d'oeuvres reception with the other guests welcomes everyone to the B&B for the night followed by a 4-course sit down dinner at the large dining table. I'd have to say that your enjoyment of dinner will be entirely dependent upon the collection of [interesting] folks staying overnight on your particular visit. That, and of course, the amount of wine you drink... We got lucky - both in company and in wine! The meal is very nice though certainly not gourmet. Katy is not a chef, but is an excellent cook! The rest of your night is free to read, play board games or cards in the sitting room, play fetch with the dogs, sleep, etc. But what absolutely cannot be missed is a trip to the light tower to watch the sunset. FABULOUS! Just unbelievable! *an important note: there is no guest showering on the island (don't worry, the inn-keepers do!) Their source of water is rain collection so they need to conserve. If you pay for a 2-night stay, I believe you are then permitted to a shower. So ladies - bring your ball caps and hair-ties for your overnight! Breakfast is served at the large dining table again before everyone disperses to take some last pictures and pack up their bags. At some point in the morning Elan will fire up the fog horn which is... err... pleasant. But I guess the men all love it - so whatever keeps them entertained while B&B-ing! After another brief boat trip back to the dock, your East Brother experience will end. This was a truly different yet wonderful B&B experience. The hospitality, the views, the charm of the house and the island... even the dogs are great! It's a VERY relaxing way to spend an evening. Since there's no TV or Internet for the guests - you're *gasp* left to relax and read a great book. Or worse, converse with your sig. other! I'd HIGHLY recommend it... read more

This is the sort of experience that actually qualifies as an experience. A short boat ride across the bay, a vertical ladder straight up out of the water, and a giant hoist to draw up the boat, and you find yourself on a small island with incredible views. You may have one of the small and lovely rooms in the actual lighthouse building, or Walter's Quarters for a bit more privacy, just across the way in the foghorn building. The sunset on this night was the star of the event- one of those slow burn, deep red and pink beauties that make you feel like cheating and checking off "see the Northern Lights" from your bucket list. Champagne and little bites are there to greet you, and you will have time to meet and chat up your fellow guests. There were six of us, total, and each couple had come to celebrate a birthday. We spent a enough time together to exhaust the usual small talk topics, were sheparded into the dining room for a three-course meal prepared by the lovely Jude, and then escaped again to watch the full moon gild the water. You will hear the persistent foghorn every twenty seconds during the season, but we found it became white noise quickly. If you are a light sleeper, ask for Walter's Quarters, which is situated further from the source of sound. After coffee and breakfast, the group together shares an experience of starting the old equipment and blowing the ages-old fog horn. It really is fun to watch great old machinery work. My wife surprised me and I had no idea where I was going. In fact she blindfolded me from our home in Livermore to this location! Once we arrived we where greater by our innkeeper Brian and his wife Stephanie met us st the harbor. We boarded a boat and they took us to this island, that had a light house and quaint preserved time period rooms. Brian and Stephanie was incredibly gracious and made you feel extremely welcome. They both where very knowledgeable of the history of the lighthouse and surrounding area. We shared the island with 4 other couples and their food presentation was great! From Champagne, appetizers, a full course dinner, with wine, and a great breakfast!! The view was great! I love lighthouses and lightstations, so when I come off the San Rafael bridge and see that single sign stating take next exit to see the Lightstation, I went.... twice within five months. Not one sign again. Lost forever. Nobody on the streets so couldn't ask anyone. GPS was useless. Well, after seeing a "Eye on the Bay" story about the lightstation, my interest was rekindled and when I was searching for whales this weekend in Marin County - didn't see not one cuz they don't drive on freeway - I saw again the sign and searched again... with no success again but returning to SF on 580 again, I did manage to see something, and even find my way to within a mile or lightstation. Though the road leading to the lightstation is very poorly-maintained and seemingly lost when you're traveling to see it, the lightstation is on a small rock and appears to be very well-maintained. There are actually several places to see it, one being on the last portion of 580 still on the San Rafael bridge direction WEST, just before the bridge ends and you can see San Quentin to the left, the lightstation can be seen to the right. There is a tiny viewing area at the last bridge exit, and there, slightly above the pier, you can see the lightstation. If you go to the base following the signs at the LAST EXiT at the toll plaza westward, do NOT go to where the huge sign says (left) view area. It's a dead end to a locked fence. The road up the hill to the harbor area also is a "dead-end" as it's private property and visitors are NOT allowed. Unfortunately, I didn't go to the island itself.. through my longer lens I didn't see anything other than a few pelicans and other birds flying near/over the island, but if I could, I would have! PHOTOGRAPHICALLY SPEAKING: I asked and asked and couldn't get any directions to the lightstation; of course this was after I've gotten into the car and started driving north.... if this was planned, I'd have googled it beforehand! I am glad I finally got to see it Monday morning through the fog, and later as the fog lifted. Enjoy and NO special suggestions required as it's outside. After driving in no-man's land for 20mins to and through the former Naval Fuel Depot Point Molate., it's funny but I originally didn't see the lighthouse when I stopped at one beachside spot to snap some pixs of birds nearby ~ the area is full of birds as I saw a vulture, a hawk/falcon(?), loads of pelicans, seagulls and other birds. I actually thought - in the thick fog, it was another oil tanker at a fueling pier. As time passed and the fog lifted bit by bit, I thought that was the strangest tanker I've even seen: it was the lightstation!! hahahahaaa read more

The Point San Pablo Harbor where you catch the boat is stuck in time. It's safe, it's charming and its falling apart. The harbor has filled in with sediment and many of the boats are actually stuck. None of this is really important, it's just a short diversion along the way. From the harbor you catch the boat to the light house. It's a short ride out to the island and easy to get on and off the on both sides, the weather was calm for us but I can imagine that it could be a different story on a rough day. When you arrive you get a small tour of the island and the accommodations, they show you your room and you can put down your things. Then you are free to walk around the grounds, check out the view from the top of the lighthouse and check out your room. Before dinner time they have champagne and h'orderves, all the other guests sat out side and got to know each other. Collectively the island can accommodate 10 guests. After we had all been hanging out we were told we could go inside for dinner. We had a salad, soup and a main dish followed by desert. Both a red and white wine were poured freely. Dinner has a great social vibe and as long as the guests are interesting its a great time. In our case it was. After dinner it's up to you. You can go to your room, walk around (but not very far as it's a very tiny island) or just sit outside and enjoy the view. I brought my camera and took a few photos, the view of San Francisco is unique from the island and worth some night photography. The room we stayed in was very cozy, the bed was very warm and the foghorn was on the other side of the building. We slept very well. The island has a cistern to collect fresh rain water and a separate redwood tank to hold more. It's large but after this drought the water levels were very low. All of the water used on the island is collected from rain. Every flush, every time the water is being used for anything it has some impact. Everything on the island has an impact. Trash has to be removed, firewood has to be brought in by boat along with everything else. The cistern was built at the time because the original fog horn ran on steam. When you stay here the people running it currently know a lot about the history. In the morning after breakfast before you leave you might get a tour of the old fog horn that has been restored. It takes a little while to fire up, run with old equipment in it's own building. That old for horn made us all jump. It's really really loud. Then it's a short boat ride back to reality. Stephanie and Bryan were excellent, friendly hosts, the food and wine were good and plentiful, it was a unique, one night experience. And probably helped by the near perfect weather we had. I highly recommend coming here for a wonderful weekend getaway or to have a picnic during the day (only an option on Saturdays during the summer). It is an amazing place to get away from cell phones, internet, tvs and truly relax. The air is fresh, the views are incredible, the new inkeepers (Richard and Jude) are really nice and hospitable and the other guests were friendly and interesting. I loved it all including Richard's history lesson about the island, Jude's healthy cooking, and animal watching (we saw some baby seagulls, seals and porpoises). The rooms and beds are more comfortable than your average bed and breakfast and the walls were not super thin as is sometimes the case with B&Bs. It might be a bit pricey, but at least the money earned by the inn goes towards the ongoing restoration and maintenance costs of a charming and unique landmark. read more

The East Brother Light Station is one of the most overlook lighthouses on the West coast; it is one of the exceptions in that is not directly on the ocean side but rather on the bay. I bet that over 3/4 of the people who commute regularly across the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge do not know that this light station exists. The Light Station functions primarily as a B&B but day use is available during the summer months (check website for details). The best part about the light house is the ride to get there. You must drive through Pt Molate and drive past the recently opened beach as well as abandoned homes, buildings railroad tracks, fire station, warehouses and even a winery. There is plenty to explore however most of it is boarded up and regularly patrolled by security. read more

Ho hum, another 5-star review. But what's not to love? If you're thinking about coming here and you like the concept you'll have a great time. Guaranteed! I think the innkeepers have a lot to do with it. Jillian and (Capt.) Che were/are awesome! They were 100% responsible for the meals that were fresh, professional and creative starting with welcoming treats and champagne to our gourmet breakfast. They were super friendly and, at the same time, focused on making this a memorable experience. Clearly they respected their obligation to represent the historicity of the light house while serving the non-profit organization that maintains it. On top of that I think the eight guests bonded fabulously. We had the West Brother Room, I think it was, which was on the ground floor with a great view of the gardens (with seagull chicks) and the Richmond Bridge. Pretty sure this was the largest room. No stairs to climb and it was just off the dining room so we were never late for meals. If you're thinking about, you won't be disappointed. read more
