My car was out of there in less than 10 minutes, despite the phone ringing off the hook & only one employee on duty. And the employee was courteous & efficient despite constant interruptions. The owner, who conducted the test, was very efficient, and was very friendly and relaxed. The other owner was less personable and more intense, and could benefit from following the personality of his partner, when interacting with customers. More importantly, I received a coupon in the mail from Berkeley Smog Test for a $20 deduction in the price, and was amazed it was very affordable for smog testing a 1985 VW Camper. I'm a college student and I've never had to have my car smog checked before, but the technician here was so friendly and helpful and it went incredibly smoothly. Great service, delivered with friendliness and genuine care. My truck had a crack in its air intake hose, which meant it had to fail, even though its numbers were good. The owner showed me where the crack was, suggested several options for a replacement source, and, when I'd replaced the faulty part, re-tested the truck with no extra charge. It's always refreshing to stumble upon a company that really puts customers first and finds ways to make life exponentially easier to manage. Berkeley Smog Test is a perfect example. I needed to get my car registration renewed and a smog test was a requirement. I made an appointment through their online system and was able to save $20 right off the bat by making the appointment online. When I showed up, I was served promptly and efficiently: in and out in 15 minutes, with a little gift (Ghirardelli chocolate) to leave with. It's these little customer touches that really personalize the experience and make you feel valued. But probably the most AWESOME part of the whole experience is that they're able to give you your renewed car registration + DMV registration stickers right there (for a $20 fee)! I was blown away by this. $20 is so worth it if it saves me the dreaded trip and hours at the DMV. So crazy other Smog Centers don't have this option! I think this may be my second 5 star review for these guys. They are truly awesome! I had registered my car as non-operational for several months due to transmission problems, and then by the time I got it fixed the registration was due with SMOG. I paid my registration fee and received my 1 day pass to drive the car to get it SMOGed, and was told I would need to return to the DMV with the SMOG certificate in order to receive my tags. I get it, but who wants to hang out at the DMV 2x's in 2 days?? Appointment or not, it's an inconvenience. So I head off to Berkeley Smog Test Only Center, after having made an appointment the day before. Mind you I had an 11:15 appt., but when an appointment I was headed to was cancelled I called to see if I could come earlier. "Sure, no problem, is this Denise?" Love that extra touch of being addressed by my name as if we're old buddies. I arrived at the earlier time and within 10 minutes I was paid and headed to my car with my certificate when (what was his name???) says "Are you a AAA member?" Why yes I am, I replied. He tells me I can go to AAA with my SMOG certificate to get my tags, no appointment needed, no waiting. And then he gives me directions to get to the place. Woohoo! I walked in, was greeted by three people with a smile and had my tags just minutes later. Who knew?? Berkeley SMOG with a smile, you're the greatest. I made an appt and went in about 15 minutes early, expecting the usual crowded parking/waiting time /'please get out of the way' etc. They went ahead and took us early, the test took 15 minutes from start to finish which gave us time to stroll across the street to look at pet pictures on the walls of the Berkeley Humane Society. When we got back the test was finished, the car passed, I paid $48 at the desk in record time, and started to drive away. It was then my daughter and I saw the silver covered chocolates in the dash cubby - really nice Ghirardelli caramel squares. We almost wept. My last experience with the cash only place on Alameda was so chaotic - had to move my car twice, and waited well over an hour. No one was very friendly and we were surrounded by unhappy people also tired of waiting. For that we paid $38 cash. For $10 more this was a happy dream. read more

Very friendly and fast. I am new to CA and this experience was a great way to get my car inspected. In my home state, the test was free, but the lines were long and it often took up to an hour to wait in line (and you sat in your car and waited in line). This was not the case at Berkeley Smog Test Center. I found a Groupon for $29 that required that I make an online appointment. That was easy and there were same day appointments (on Saturday! BONUS!). I drove up, gave the guy my keys, filled out a short form and went for a walk- there was a pet adoption/pet care festival going on right in front of the place. When I came back, my car was ready. They gave me a little Ghirardelli mini for my trouble- one negative: it was a hot day and the chocolate melted! :-( I'll be back next year for my check! read more

I dropped off my car for a smog check on Saturday and the guys were so nice! I was worried that when i told them I had a AAA coupon they would be annoyed or give me sub par service, but instead they were just the opposite - super friendly and welcoming. DO NOT use Berkeley Smog. Their customer service is terrible. I purchased a Groupon to try the smog service. When I redeemed this Groupon with Berkeley Smog they demanded $10 more dollars even though this was not required. I did not have a choice but to pay the additional money because I was on a deadline to pay my DMV tags on time or else I would have to pay penalties. These dollars may not be a lot to some, but I am on a fixed income so it does make a difference to me! read more
