I had just purchased a new car (and the seller had screwed me over with claiming that the smog had been done within 30 days of purchase), was in need of a reliable smog place. Along came a livingsocial deal on the very first day. Must have been a sign! I bought it, went on their web page to make a reservation, got one for the very next day, booked it right away on line. When I arrived at the smog place the next day, I was 20 minutes early, but was helped right away, so I left the lot even before my appointment started. It was my first time getting my car smogged and I thought it would be such a pain but it wasn't thanks to this place! I showed up early and it was no big deal. They took my car right away and finished in a timely manner. The man I talked to was also very kind. They seem to prefer payment with card versus cash considering when I went they didn't have much change. No big deal though. The location is also nice considering there are plenty of food places to explore nearby. They included a coupon with the appointment. Went here for a groupon. Awesome service, they have a waiting area and also had chairs outside for those whom wanted to enjoy the sun. I called ahead of time and the guys were really flexible on whether I wanted to make an appointment or just swing by without one. I gave it four stars more so because when I arrived the guy assumed I had an appointment and gave me the feeling that I should have made an appointment beforehand and did not let off the subject until I told him that I had called beforehand and the guy on the phone said either way was just fine. Just would have been better had it been more clear with all the employees that worked there on their policies so they don't make OCD people like me worried I would have to wait awhile when I could have avoided the entire issue when I had called them in the first place. Also, once my car passed smog I got a nice chocolate on my seat. However, my girlfriend's truck did not pass smog and she got no chocolate =( kind of a bummer because I feel like the people who don't pass should get a chocolate to cheer up because they will have to take their car to the mechanic to figure out what is wrong with their vehicle. Quite painless and super quick. They finished up within a couple of minutes, and there was no line when I went there on a Monday afternoon at 4pm. Mention the yelp deal, and you get the test for 31$ + certificate for 9$ = 40$ if you pass. If you don't pass, you pay 31$ and then retest for free and pay 9$ for the certificate when you do pass. Pretty no nonsense about it too: I brought a copy of the DMV form on my phone instead of a hard copy which would have been preferable to them, but the guy didn't make a big stink about it and just used my license plate number and my VIN number. Very nice. Also gave me a tip about AAA members getting their registration sticker on the spot if I go to their office. Quick and easy. Definitely coming back here when I need a smog check again. read more

Great smogging experience! Barely failed the first time and still had to pay but they gave me a few tips and let me have a free retest within 30 days. I was out of town for over a month so they actually let me retest for free after 32 days. Happy to say I barely passed this time. Berkeley Smog was extremely professional and provided excellent service. Highly recommended. P.S. they even left a little ghirardelli square on my armrest after the test, which I appreciated. There is honestly only so much you can say about a smog test center. I mean, it's a smog test center... But to have 5 stars and as many reviews as Berkeley Smog Test Center, that has has GOT to tell you something. This place is as great as the 5 stars say it is. Fast, reliable, and you even get a chocolate treat at the end. : ) It's like they reward you for having to wait 10 minutes (as if 10 minutes is that long). No other smog test experience can be better than this. I will continue to go here as long as I need a smog test, and I'd refer all of my East Bay friends to it as well.
