Like Berkots overall feel and prices. Problem is that they have zero respect for their customers time. One lane open at service counter. Feel bad for lady working it because she has no chance to keep up. Sale items often come up wrong price quite often and that always slows things. Typical south suburban poor customer service I've seen since 1980s moving into area. I'll continue to shop at Berkots but you must watch checkout closely. Speak up if they need a manager to wake up from whatever they are doing to open a second checkout. read more

Food was ordered by customer for family Christmas dinner. Catering was not up to my satisfaction. My bill was over $350.00. Once I unpacked my food for holiday some of the food was leaking from aluminum container, sweetpotato praline was not up to satisfaction, side items were missing as meal was being prepared, which required a visit back to the store. Staff was polite, but I would not refer this caterer to other customers. I certainly would not use the cater in the future. Wished that I had cooked my holiday meal and saved the $$. read more

I really like this store and come fairly often with my parents. They have a good selection of meat and a particularly good bakery (I hadn't seen marbled pumpernickel/rye bread for years until I came here), and a great choice in the alcohol department (I am particularly impressed by their selection of hard cider!) Since it's a smaller store you aren't going to have a huge variety of most goods, but I don't think they do too badly, at least with the things I am looking for. Since I cook with a lot of weird ingredients, I might not be able to do my shopping here alone, but it's good for the staples. It's not my home store but I find it to be good for certain things and am always happy to stop in when I am in the area. read more

"Meat's meat and a man's (or woman's) gotta' eat." Berkot's has meat and more. Lots of it. Lamb. Homemade sausage and cold cuts. Pork belly. Oodles of bacon. But they also have extensive produce (jackfruit!), dried fruits and nuts, an in-house bakery and a surprising amount of booze and international foods. Their prices are very competitive and service from all who work there is sincere and helpful. Check out their ads in your local paper just to compare to large chains. read more

Diana the cashier manager is the rudest cashier I have ever encountered. she asked me if I was on the Loyalty program which I had no idea what it is, so I responded "what is that?'' her response was: "you don't have it then'' which does not exactly answer my question. So as she is trying to give me change back as asked her again, how does the loyalty program work? she then got exasperated and she looks at me showing me her hands and she says: "I am trying to do this!!!!" she looked pissed at my asking a question while she's trying to give me change, then she tell me to go on line and apply but never bothers to explain what the loyalty program is, so go to walk out and she does not even say thank you! so I turned around and I told her "lady you are very rude!! and she still asks "me!?''......It is insane that these people intend to keep customers with rude employees, never will I go there again!! read more

I live 2 minutes from Jewel but drive 15 minutes away to Berkot's in Lockport. It's a great store with a nice selection of meats and produce and a super nice deli. All the deli workers try their best to please & they are all fantastic people!! Try it. You'll like it! read more

In what used to be the old Sterk's Grocery Store, Berkot's has done a total remodel from floor to ceiling and unveiled it's newer, more modern look at it's Grand Opening yesterday (7/28). It turned out beautifully. Actually, I had no idea that it was their grand opening, but I'd heard it was supposed to be more of a specialty store, so I stopped in purely out of curiosity. It's cleaner, more colorful and feels as if it simply has a larger selection than before. Something must have been on sale at the deli counter because I have never seen a waiting line that long. Luckily, my list did not include lunch meat, so I went on my way exploring. The prices weren't too bad, but they're going to have to lower them a bit more if they're going to compete with the local SuperWalmart. They do have a nice craft beer selection, though...something that was sorely missing in the Historic District of town. A few Grand Opening specials made it worth my trip and I'm sure that I'll be back. Just maybe not when I have to load my basket. It's hard to beat Walmart's prices when it comes to restocking my cupboard. Worth checking out for yourself. read more

OVERPRICED. I thought Jewel was expensive, but if you can believe it, Berkots prices are higher than Jewel! Even for their Generic and/or "store-brand" items! The ONLY thing that Berkots has on Jewel and Walmart is the Deli meat selection.....HUGE variety to chose from, but I guess the selection doesn't matter when you can't afford their prices. read more

Boy, the prior reviews caught me off-guard. Anyway, my review doesn't apply towards the entire store. Neat bakery section as I ended up getting some cannolis, nepolitians, mini cream pies, pb & oreo brownie sandwiches. Easily the best craft beer section in a grocery store! Goose Island, Bell's Founders, North Coast, Sierra Nevada, Two Brothers, just to name a few. They had some hard to find bottles like GI Juliet, Lolita, and FW Sucaba. They also offer growler fills for those who want to take tap-quality beer home. read more

I Was very disappointed in this store. I was looking forward to a new store close to home, but I won't be going here. Their prices are higher than Jewel foods, which everyone around here says are too high. So whats the point of paying more here for items of lower quality.? The store was very dark, and the ceilings were leaking on the day I went there. Then to top it off, I had the slowest cashier ever. I'm a patient person, but she was ridiculously slow!! read more

I love shopping here. I don't know what the complaints are about. Their meat quality is outstanding and their produce is excellent too. I used to shop at jewel but their meat quality has gone way down, while Berkot's has remained excellent. I also love shopping in a small store atmosphere. It is quiet, the employees are helpful, and everything is easy to find. I have taken advantage of their liquor rebates frequently and have never had a problem. You just have to make sure you send it in on time. I love this store! read more

SHOP ELSEWHERE What follows in a copy of my problem I e-mailed to this company. Thank you for the new ultra modern new store in Lockport, we have been waiting a long time. WE WILL NEVER RETURN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Mussmans eggs you were selling were the filthiest I have ever seen in my lifetime of shopping. The cartons were dirty, greasy and even had dried egg drippings. I opened about 40 cartons to check the eggs--they were dirty with chicken sh#@, cracked and a few had holes on the bottom. I have seen a few dirty eggs in my time, even a few spots of chicken waste BUT NEVER in so many cartons. Before my wife started to look at the filth I told her about, she said these are hand sorted eggs from Grant Park. My reply was there hands must have been covered in chicken @#%@!! After going thru the mess she wanted to report it to the manager. I said no, they have enough problems. UNTIL------------- Apple Pie on sale: We sorted through all the pies to find the one we wanted. It have No scanning label but did have the APPLE stick on label. Not a dutch apple crumb topping pie. I thought the cashier would be able to look at the pie and be able to ring it up. NO SIR. We showed her the ad and pointed out the apple sticker. PRICE CHECK!! We told the price checker the price, " have to scan the price". OK so we waited for her return and we waited and waited --Finally she return with pie in hand and a label to scan. On the way to our car my wife said "Did she give us the original pie back"? I chuckled but went to look anyway. Well the wife was right!!! A nice cracked crusted apple pie from the ones we did not picked. She did not want me to return the pie, BUT I don't like switching products or laziness to get someone to put the right scanning label on or over ride the system to punch in the price. The fun continued at the so called " customer service" desk. "Sir this is apple pie" "I know it is, but it is not the apple pie I picked out. The cashier could not ring up my original choice because it did not have a scanning label" "Did you want the other apple pie with the crumbs?? That is not on sale" Starting to have blood pressure rise. "No- I wanted the apple pie I chose, not a different pie just because it has a Scan label!!" Now an older lady comes up to assist the "customer service girl" and we repeat the same routine. Now a white shirt and tie manager was listening to my situation and chuckled " Sorry about that!!" WTF!! Smirking at my problem !!! Boiling with anger and just asked for my money back. I walk out to the sounds of "Have a nice day" read more

It's a grocery store. It's better than what was here before it and the prices are cheaper than Jewel. The meat department and deli are one of the best in Lockport. They have a great selection of meats and cheeses in the deli and their "home-made" sausages are really good. As far as the rest of the store its pretty standard fare with a few surprises on the shelves. I like shopping here for a lot of my groceries when I do the shopping. read more

Geez, sure is a lot of bitching here about Berkot's. I'm wondering if I've been going to the same store. I'd go into the Mokena store occasionally because of the prices along with the sales. Berkot's in Lockport has the former Sterks/Fairway beat by a mile in price, cleanliness, availability and in many cases, employee attitude. I think people need something to bitch about at times and to say Jewel has better prices is insane. Also, are you really going to open 40 cartons of eggs to find the right ones? You wouldn't give up after, say, 27 or so?... I called and complained to the assistant manager of the Lockport store this morning because of an incident I had last week. I went in expecting to load up because they had a very good sale going, the problem was the sale was at the new Orland Park store only and they wouldn't honor the prices. I didn't argue with them, I just left and spent my money at Wal-Mart where they'll price match. So, I got the savings, Wal-Mart got the sale and Berkot's got jack. And I let the assistant manger know that. I said it's a case of Berkot's needing me more than I need them. Why should I be forced to pay the extra sales tax in Orland? It's not going to happen. I think Berkot's is getting a bad rep on this site because mostly those with negative experiences are posting. I do agree that certain things are overpriced, so I go to Wal-Mart to buy my toiletries and what not. Stay away from the rebates for "booze" most of their vendors are denying them. Deceiving very deceiving

Service here sucks. Each time I've gone in to purchase something, I have to get the cashiers attention because they are too busy turned around gossiping to the bagger. In front of customers, they all talk about each other. Especially the older women that work there (what can you expect, I know) It's just rude customer service. Prices are waaay too high. They keep the place clean though, I guess that's a plus. read more

Berkots. Hmmm this place is ridiculous IMO. I don't think the meats are all that great. Jewel has way better meat. The produce is alright. I went here for pancetta which they only have cubed so for specialty deli I prefer Steffanellis. I'm glad they seem to be doing well but I wouldn't shop them. read more

Don't shop at this store the prices are high and their customer service is horrible, worse than walmart, now thats saying a lot. First of all the employees never greet you or smile like the deli lady who's where's her name tag on her filty hat that looks like she sleeps in it, she should be driving a truck. Second the cashiers never greet you at the registers, a Hello did you find everything ok would be great but not at this store. Third the store manager alway's has a frown on his face he never say's hi how are you nothing, guess he dont care about his job, he should go work for piggy wiggly. Go to Dominick's or Jewel they just lowered there prices and the employees at least acknowledge there customers and dont ignore them. I will not shop there again!! read more

This store is a great addition to our community. One can't help to notice the difference as soon as you walk through the door. The produce is displayed in a picture perfect way and actually makes me want to try different things. It is probably one of the cleanest grocery stores that I have ever seen. The deli and the butcher area offers the best cuts of meats that I have ever had. They also have their own specialties which are the best. When they have a sale they are competive with Walmart. On a scale of 1 - 5 the cuts of meat are a 5 at Berkots, a 3 at Jewel and a 1 at Walmart. Our favorite bakery has always been Orland Park Bakery, which has now moved. Tha bakery at Berkots features the "Orland Park Bakery" The service is super, the employees are kind and friendly. Weekends is very busy at Berkots, but there is hardly ever a wait to chech out. We all know the lines at Jewel and Walmart on a Saturday or Sunday are rediculas. Berkots is one of the best and I have never shared my thoughts about any business before. read more

Like everyone else in Lockport I was excited to see some new life being breathed into the run down strip mall on 9th street. Unfortunately my negative experiences have greatly outweighed the positives. While their butcher and beer selection is great, the rest of their store is deplorable. I don't think I have ever been able to make it through the check out line in less than 10 minutes or without listening to employees arguing with each other. Last week I heard one manager cursing out another in front of at least a dozen customers as I waited for 15 minutes to pay for a 12 pack of beer. The final straw however came this weekend. My wife ordered cupcakes and a birthday cake for my son. Not only did they have the wrong cake, but when my wife went to pay the cashier dropped the cupcakes and still expected her to pay for them, she did not. This store is one of the worst run businesses I have ever patronized and I will no longer be spending money here. read more

Berkots gets NO stars from me, but the system made me check one! I recently submitted this to the Lockport Legend: When I found out Lockport was getting a new grocery store, I was really excited. I had never been to a Berkot's before and looked forward seeing what they had in store for us. Boy, was I in for a surprise. I visited the 3rd day they were open. I have to say I was disappointed at the shape the vegetables were in. I thought surely a brand new store would want to impress the local community in an effort to win them over. Many of the veggies were pretty wilted, and I even skipped over a few that I normally buy because of it. Unfortunately, that situation was mild compared to my second visit about a week ago. I went in to buy veggies and meats for the week. The veggies were in even worse shape this time - 3 or 4 weeks after opening. I approached the zucchini squash - of which there were two (yes - 2). Both looked pretty beat up, and had I squeezed one of them at all, my fingers would have squished through the vegetable. Gross. Then on to the mushrooms - not awful - but not worthy of purchasing. It looked like it was just about time to pull them from the shelves. And for the real bonus - the green peppers. Upon picking up 3 or 4 in an attempt to find a few that weren't so wilted, I came across one that was entirely covered in mold around the top stem. How disgusting! I promptly walked out and have no intention of returning. I've read how they pride themselves on their meats, but I sure don't want to find out what might be growing on those that you can't see. I am extremely disappointed and frankly quite offended that they don't seem to have any respect for the residents, nor any appreciation for being allowed to open here. And it's even more disturbing to read articles in the Legend that talk about how wonderful the store is and how happy the authors are that we are priviledged to shop there. Really? Have these people actually been in the store? I feel like I've been fed a line of political bull. At this point, I think it would be nice of the paper took a stand for the residents and let Berkots know the real story. read more

Berkots is a nice store, and I'm glad to have it in Lockport! They have the best veggies and meat in town. And an amazing bakery and deli case. Plus, they are a very kid-friendly place to shop, with double-seater shopping carts, and car-shaped carts, and carts the kids can push. It's a very pleasant store to visit. read more

FIRST TIME HERE TODAY! Well ill be fair and give three stars, Store was beautiful neat and clean, I seen asst. manager helping a customer that, impressed me! seeing him help out and not afraid to get his hands dirty. staff at check out was fantastic! I would of given this store 5 stars if it wasn't for the weirdo loss prevention guy that fallowed me through the whole store looking in my cart like I was some sort of thief. When I left the store as i was putting my groceries in my car i looked and seen him hiding behind a pole watching me, I was so freaked out I almost called the police,I was scared by his strange behavior. I thought he was some local creep!!!! Not Good!!!!! First impression will not make me wanna stop in lockport on my way home, I will just keep driving next time there are plenty of awesome stores by my own house!!!! I have been going to Berkots since they opened their Lockport location. I go primarily for produce, which is as good or better than Jewel. And mostly canned or frozen foods. The only meats I have purchased in the past has been pre-packaged ground chicken or turkey and occasionally very lean ground beef.The last two Christmas dinners I have made I used standing rib roasts from Sams Club. Excellent. This year I was too lazy to go to Sams so I opted for a New York Strip Roast at Berkots. Never again. The meat was no more tender than many cheap roasts I've had and the gristle was so prevalent half the roast was full of it. Back to pre-packaged chicken and turkey and occasional ground beef. On the bright side the store is clean. read more

I have tried and failed on three occasions to like this place, but something always gets in the way... This Berkots seems to be declining in quality quickly. It started out great but much like Sterks before it I'm starting to find more and more expired food on the shelves. On the last visit right before thanksgiving I noticed some very spoiled meat that had to be like that for at least a few days. How is at that not one employee would notice that and remove it? I have had to ask the guy in the meat department if they had something I was looking for on a couple occasions and got literally a mumble and a head shake. I've never cared for any of the bakery items I've purchased so I have since stopped even trying anything. I will say the chicken from the deli is pretty good. The cashiers are always friendly. If you only need to get a few items, and want a place to run in quickly it's okay. I would never be able to do my main Sunday grocery shopping for the week here. The inventory is slim, and overpriced for the quality. Although I wish it wasn't the case Jewel or Walmart is a better option. read more

I am shocked at the amount of bad reviews for this store. Let me start by saying, the prices in comparison to Jewel average out. The only time we still go to Jewel is for big sale items like pop. I go to Walmart for staple items like canned goods, chips, cereal, etc...because it you want to compare prices...Walmart wins. I would never return to shop at Jewel or Walmart over Berkots for meat, deli, dairy, baked goods, fruits or vegetables. The prices and selection are FAR better at Berkots, not to mention the customer service at the deli counter and butcher are outstanding. Friendly and helpful! I get a good old fashioned small town feeling every time I shop here. I shop with my son and he always gets acknowledged...even offered a piece of cheese at the deli and a cookie at the bakery! We are talked to and treated like old friends/family! For an all-around great shopping experience, this is it! This is what America is missing these days. If it means that I buy a box of cookies for 40 cents more every now and then...so be it. Oh and i have never spent an extended amount of time at check out, especially compared to Jewel or Walmart. And at least the cashiers are friendlier if you do wait. read more
