There was a high turnover rate of care givers and other staff. Costs increased almost 20% within a year. The memory care is on the third floor of this old run down building, and she hardly ever saw daylight. They'll lure you in with a big song and dance, and then they'll put them in wheelchairs and they just sit there forgotten. Promises of 'activities, field trips, walks, porch visits'. It was sad and depressing every visit, and the third floor smells like pee. My mom was spry and could walk fine when she got there, and when we finally left for good not even a year later, we had to wheel her out because she never walked around and lost abilities, she was unbathed for weeks, and with a UTI. It's quite a shame. No one there, including the employees, are truly happy.

Additionally, it created a lack of trust and comfort on both sides---theirs and ours---which should not be a factor when your loved one is dying. Lastly, communications and supplies sometimes lagged, as did follow-through with the social worker we were assigned, but never heard from to schedule our meetings.

Originally I had used a national service that advertises on tv a lot and they referred me to a home that he only stayed 8 days. It was not a good place and they didn't do anything they promised. They are hiring all the old staff who was fired under Darlene, I mean they were fired for a reason. Do not bring your love ones here if you care about their well being. I live in one of the independent buildings and more often then not, we have no hot water. I usually wake up around 2-3am to shower to get some mildly warm, not hot, water. I have complained to management but always get the same answer, "we are working on it". My family is looking to move me as soon as we can find a place. Management should be ashamed, we are all older people living here and pay quite a lot of money, money which includes meals. The food is not good, it is cold and often they don't order enough to give all what we ordered. We have spoken to the chef and the Director, both seem to do nothing. Winnwood Retirement Community is really a community with support and concern expressed in a variety of ways. The campus is beautiful! There are a few things prospective residents need to be aware of. The smell of cigarettes is pervasive throughout the campus--in the dining area, near the entrances of buildings, and sometimes in the parking lot. The smell permeates clothing and affects my breathing. Breakfast is delicious and plentiful. Dinner is inconsistent in quality and in portion size. Dinners are tasty about 80% of the time; sometimes portions are small. The grand piano is beautiful, and I played it often for several weeks last summer. However, the action of the keys is so stiff that my shoulders could not tolerate the physical challenge of playing that piano as it is right now. If the cigarette issue were resolved, dinners were consistently tasty, and the piano were adjusted so that it's playable, I could give Winnwood an unequivocal 5! I can heartily recommend almost all of the people here. It's a pleasant place to live!
