First visit here and I was very pleasantly surprised. I'm a vegetarian with specific dietary restrictions and they went above and beyond to accommodate, serving me a version of the vegetarian linguine with kale and spinach instead of pasta and cheese. (It was actually the best meal I've had in weeks - should be a menu regular! Absolutely delicious.) The other diners with me ordered the burgers, fish and chips, and seafood fettuccine, all to rave reviews. The server was extremely accommodating, friendly and helpful. Beautiful, warm space too. We never got a chance to eat. We were visiting from out of town with our 7 month old, and this was the only night we had to eat at the Bernard Stanley Gastropub. It had good reviews, and served seafood, so we were excited. We showed up around 8pm, but the manager told us that it was too late to seat us with an infant. She was concerned about losing their liquor license since we had an under 19 year old (18 years and 5 months under nineteen to be precise), which is against regulations past 8:30pm if you serve liquor. I tried to reason with her saying that the regulation was meant to prevent underage drinking, and was clearly not meant to keep babies away from the tap. Nothing to do, she sent us away. Sad experience. Not very friendly or understanding attitude from the restaurant staff. We ended up skipping dinner and brought home our sober infant. read more

Last night (09/13/2018) I had the special . . . pan seared cod with caper glaze served over pork belly and pea risotto with grilled zucchini. The fish was fresh caught that morning by a local supplier. The sweetness of the glaze mixed so well with the saltiness of the capers and the creamy risotto. It was spectacularly good. Plave was crowded but not unruly and the service was very friendly and not overbearing. If you ever get to St. John's, check out Bernard Stanley's on Duckworth St. On a cold, misty night in a port town with a Guinness, this may have been the best meal I've ever had while travelling for work. read more

Super yummy kettle chips w/ house spicy ketchup, curry and maple mayo dip trio plus one daily special of seared cod with aioli over seasoned mash and broccolini; one daily special of curry rubbed chicken with the most divine balsamic peaches atop garlic almond risotto..... there was a nice delay between courses, the place has its original architectural charm and is nicely lit. If i could give 0 stars i would. My girlfriend and i went here and it took over an hour to get food. Our server only checked on us three times , when the food came there was UNDERCOOKED bacon and onions on our hash browns. My girlfriend is vegetarian, I am not but no where on the menu did it say there would be bacon on the hash browns. They took back the food and i fully believe they just took off the old hash browns off and placed new ones on. My girlfriend is now sick to her stomach because of the bacon being mixed with her french toast. My touton was somehow undercooked in the middle but burnt to a crisp on the ends. We informed our server and she only offered to have another touton. At this point we were completely over the day and wanted to leave. No discount was taking off for our wait or overcook toutons. We will never be back nor will we recommend this to anyone. read more

July 11, ate on the deck outside. Handy on the worst dining experience I've had in as long as I can remember (I'm well into my 40s). Wow. 30 mins for a drink, an hour to get an appetizer, and approaching 2 hours for a main. Spend your money anywhere else! Hair twice in the same meal that had to go back and then the "supervisor" got snippy with me saying "he didn't have to take this" (1.5 hours into our dining) and that they were extremely busy. Isn't handling customer issues part of the supervisor's job? Wait staff told us we ordered incorrectly. What?! Meanwhile inside (was at duckworth) was empty and outside filled, got served, and emptied long before we did. I won't spend another dime at BS and will recommend anyone I know to do the same. Worst service in 15 years, by THE biggest landslide. I'm actually shocked. And not the cheapest given the type of pub grub on the menu. Do better BS you really sucked on this occasion, and there won't be another for me because of it. Hopefully someone reads this and goes elsewhere. read more

I lived in St. John's for 5 years and this place wasn't around and I wish it was because I've been back twice now and gone three times. Their brunch is to die for and their dinner options are also great. Burgers were delicious. There's just so many good things on the menu I'd like to try. I'll keep coming back. We didn't find this gem until our last night in St. John's otherwise I would have visited again. The vibe was great and the staff was amazing. There was a bit of a wait because it was super busy but it was totally worth it. We had mussels to start followed by a burger for me and the seafood pasta for my boyfriend. He loved the pasta and after seeing all the seafood in it, I was a little jealous. My burger was awesome too so I got over the jealousy quickly. Prices were resonable and overall a great value! Pretty good overall. Chips with dips was a great starter with excellent homemade potato chips and a variety of dips. Mussels were excellent, plentiful and plump. Fish & chips looked pretty good. This place was a big disappointment. Went because of the 5-star rating on Yelp but it was a solid 2. Overcooked scallops. Mussels that weren't cleaned at all. Bacon on the burger tasted like it was at least 2 days old. The cook spent most of his time out of the kitchen. Within an hour, he visited the bar 6-7 times. Service was lack lustre. Also wish I hadn't seen inside the kitchen on my way to the bathroom... The food was edible but a far cry from 5 stars. The whole experience was really disappointing. One of those situations where you don't want to finish the burger because then you know the flavor will stop. So fabulous. We were a party of 6. Everyone argued about whose meal was the best. I still maintain that mine was the best. (Herb crusted salmon over spinach fettuccine) but there were some other standouts, including pan-seared halibut over risotto, seafood fettuccine, and chicken with mushrooms, sweet potatoes and garlic. Beers were cold, representing several provinces. Both the banana walnut bread pudding and the Tia maria creme brûlée were delicious. Vibe is inviting and service was friendly and helpful. Could not believe how poor the service was that we received here tonight. We had a reservation for dinner tonight and were pleasantly greeted by the hostess. She then proceed to have a chat with a server for a few minutes before seating us. It was about 10 minutes later when no one to serve us, that I had to ask if we had a server. Someone finally came over and told us our server was in the bathroom (TMI). We ordered our drinks and food and it took well over 50 minutes before we were to get our food. I had the scallops which were laced with some brown sugar water and the grape and apple salad which had no dressing. My dining partner had the coconut encrusted cod with mango salsa which was a tad bit spicy. Now, food aside we were only asked once how things were not even at the end of the meal. We weren't even given water refills or asked if we would like any more drinks. Again I had to approach staff for our bills, and then the waitress came over after and asked if we wanted dessert, umm we already have the bills and would just like to pay. You may think oh they busy over run staff, however there were many empty tables. Sad that there are so many great yelp reviews which is why we went. Never again Bernard Stanley. read more

Have been here twice now in as many days the first experience was decent wait time for food was s little long but it was during dinner rush so understandably so. The second time we came in at the end of lunch rush the dining room was clearing out and our order took 40 minutes to arrive and would have been longer had I not called the manager over to check on the situation. We ended up having to get our food to go as we had a prior commitment. The food ended up taking an additional 10 minutes to pack up even though we were assured it was ready when speaking with the manager. The bill was 70 dollars and was not discounted for inconvenience. We did not get an apology for the inconsiderate service. Our server came to our table twice, once to take the order and once to take our payment. I would not recommend this establishment to anyone at this point and am severely disappointed in the Newfoundland hospitality. I work in the industry and never give a bad review as there are always extenuating circumstances that make experiences bad, but this was just abysmal service. read more
