Located by the water it is a very nice and spacious chain like restaurant. the waitress was super friendly and fun, she talked to us a lot and hospitality was clearly her forte. we really enjoyed the service here. they have some neat drinks that will have you very happy. SANGRIA- super fun as they bring you the bottles with the ingredients separately so you can build up your flavor, adding a fun fact to the drink for sure. CLASSIC JACK STACK( poutine)- huge serving 2 pol can share easily, as far as flavor, I can say I had better, but I you see yourself here for some drinks this is a good choice for sharing songs at least 3 ppl in your group. I wish though the added ore cheese to it as we eat it I noticed that the middle of the stack was only fries and the sauce and cheese were MIA. BEER CHEDAR SOUP- this is another interesting presentation of meal, comes with a separate beer shot so you can add to the soup yourself, once again they went ahead for the fun factor on the meal, however this soup tasted heavy and salty, I would not recommend this soup at all. one of my friends didn't even bother to eat it at all. overall this is not a place for a foodie and more of a drinking crew type of night.

So-called Macho Nacho and Chicken Strips ordered over DoorDash

So-called Macho Nacho and Chicken Strips ordered over DoorDash. It cost $18 before tax and when I received my order, there were three tortilla chips, 5 pieces of dry chicken strips, and a small bag of fries. Absolutely a waste of time and money. I'm done with Jack Astor's.

Visited last night with my family around 8pm. From the beginning, our visit was not pleasant because of our waitress. She was unfriendly and acted as if we were a pain in the ass. She would not make eye contact when she checked in with us once. She asked "everything ok here?" and walked away saying "cool" before we barely answered. The poutine I had wasn't very hot, the fries were hot but the gravy was subpar. Overall, our experience with waitress Alleigh was what made me give this place 2 stars and made her tip quite low to what we would normally tip our waitresses. We told the hostess on the way out how awful she was too. Hope others don't get the same experience.

Moxies St. John's Restaurant - Churro ice cream sandwich

Moxies St. John's Restaurant

The beef was sparse and a bit dry, which was curious since the bread was quite greasy. I upgraded my side to a "power greens" salad which I did actually enjoy. The greens were fresh and topped with a pleasant poppyseed dressing. Topping it were thick slices of strawberries and postage-stamp size asiago shavings. My wife ordered chicken tenders and fries which were pretty average. As they are at most places. A locally-brewed session IPA whose name I can't recall (Quidi Vidi was the brewery) was on tap and we thought that was quite tasty. Service was quick and personable.

A Disappointing First Visit to Moxie's…read more Last night, my husband and I, accompanied by another couple, decided to try out Moxie's for the first time. Unfortunately, our experience left much to be desired. Upon ordering an appetizer to share, we were surprised to find that plates and cutlery were not provided until a few minutes after the dish was delivered. This initial hiccup set the tone for the evening. While my husband and I enjoyed our meals, the other couple ordered steaks. The medium steak arrived well-done, and we were informed by the food runner that there had been an incident in the kitchen, resulting in the need for a remake. Unfortunately, this meant that three of us had nearly finished our meals by the time the last one was delivered. Throughout the dining experience, our waitress failed to inquire about the quality of our food after the appetizer, and she neglected to ask if we wanted refills. While she did take the initiative to discount the affected meal and remove a glass of wine from the bill, the overall service did not meet our expectations. Given the premium prices at Moxie's, we anticipated a higher standard of service. In the event of a mistake like the one with the steak, we would have expected a manager to visit our table and offer a sincere apology. Unfortunately, this level of customer service was lacking. While the food quality for two of us was satisfactory, the overall experience was marred by service shortcomings. We hope that Moxie's takes steps to improve their customer service to match the premium dining experience they aim to provide. First impression are so important and our was very disappointing, needless to say we won't be back.

Christian's Pub - Kiss the Cod!

Christian's Pub

Come from away, leave as an honorary Newfoundlander…read more.... Christian's Pub is where I was "screeched in". Gayle skipped being in the ceremony, but watched enthusiastically as we both had a great time. Plus enjoying a couple of wee pints of Guinness ahead of time was a great starter. After all, Christian's Pub is a cool bar and lounge in itself. As legend has it, an American serviceman stationed in Newfoundland during the Second World War downed some local rum one night and let out a 'blood-curdling howl'. Someone nearby asked what that awful yell was and a Newfoundlander sitting at the bar said, "The Screech? 'Tis the rum, me son." And that's how Screech earned its name. I now have the certificate as an Honorary Newfoundlander. But first the ceremony! That involved a shot of Screech rum, flambé bologna, kissing the codfish (a real frozen one), receiving a a personalized certificate, and taking a photo with Skipper Lukey. Joining me that Sunday evening were people from all over the world, all of us having a great time. It was a whole lot of fun and Skipper Lukey put on a show that was also thoughtful, folksy, and educational, all in just under 30 minutes. Other George Street bars do this, but Christian's was the only one that another businesses on the street recommended. And Hell Yes! I'd do it again.

Every visitor "from away" must be Screeched in. It's the law. Being from Newfoundland myself, I had…read moreto use this opportunity to have my younger brother and partner Screeched in on our recent trip home. Christian's, being the oldest pub in St. John's on one of the oldest streets in North America seemed like the perfect place. Now, Christian's is no fancy joint, so let that be known right away. It's charming and a little edgy. Drinks are poured with love, and hope you're not hungry because you're lucky to get a bag of crisps. Or maybe a piece of flambéed bologna! But it's all served up with the typical Newfoundland charm. Fast forward to the Screeching in... Skipper Lukey is impressive! Memorizing everyone's name (all 40 or so guest) during our ceremony. Adding in his rough around the edges reminders on how the process works. You better be good at following instructions, because Lukey will remind you, not so gently, if you're out of line. All in good fun, I promise! Respect the ceremony and keep chatter to a minimum. It's a sacred duty to Screech in mainlanders after all. Overall a great experience and I highly recommend it to anyone and their group looking to become an honorary Newfoundlander!

So we came in, took a seat at the bar, ordered a couple pints of Guinness (the best pour in St. John's we were told), and listened to several musicians around a big table churn out a number of traditional tunes. Another Irish word for this is seisiún or session. It was very relaxed and informal, with individual musicians starting a tune and others quickly joining in. Gayle and I really felt part of a local crowd of very nice and hospitable Newfoundlanders. A significant percentage of Newfoundlanders come from Irish descent. That started in the 17th Century when ships from the English West Country stopped into along Ireland's south coast to collect food and servants for the fisheries around the coast of Newfoundland. As such, the traditional music of Newfoundland and Labrador is rooted in Irish, Scottish, and English music. The Bar itself has a sort of local divey vibe, with dark woods, a cool bar, no pretense, and even a 24-hour camera screen on Quidi Vidi. It was a place where we really enjoyed staying awhile, which we did until this Celtic jam session was over.

For all that is said (and really overstated) about Newfoundlanders being the nicest people in Canada, I actually had that friendly experience here more than at other bars in the city. (As an outsider, you can be easy to spot.) The bartender was friendly and on the ball. The live music was impressive. The artist who played (July 2?) was furiously devoted to continuously cranking out great music. The local patrons were generally lively and willing to engage in conversation with outsiders.
