If vanity is important Dr. Ruth Larson should be your choice. I have had 3 procedures on my face.. I have had sqaumish and basil. The last one was on the bridge of my nose and it was rather extemsive. I was so concerned about the outcome. After 2 weeks friends said they could not even tell I had anything done. Be advised that this practice utilizes an in-house lab to do their biopsies. I called the number on the report (after having to go in person to get a copy after multiple requests). I called the business on the letterhead and asked for a copy of the slide for a second opinion. I was then notified that their company just transcribed notes into a report format, and that all tests were done in-house at the dermatologist's office. However, the letterhead it came on looked like a 3rd party. This felt deceptive, didn't seem ethical and I wonder if it's even legal? read more

Dr. Mark Vierra is great. But whoever is working the front desk, why aren't you verifying insurance? If my old insurance wasn't active , why didn't you inform me so I could give you my new insurance? Which apparently you don't take. If I was informed that, I wouldn't make an appt. My work changed the entire companies insurance plan without any notice. So I was not even aware that it changed , I just knew for a fact I had insurance. Now I have to pay a huge bill because of your staff. It would be one thing if she did it behind closed doors (still awful) but she scolded this young woman in front of me during my appointment and it made me feel very uncomfortable. I went to Bernardo Dermatology Medical Group as a new patient for an overall skin exam and while there decided to do a couple of minor facial "touch ups". My exam lasted less than 5 minutes....the rest of the visit was about 10 minutes. Total charge was $500. This office is VERY expensive....and I thought my outcome on the "touch-up" was negligible. I was asked to return 30 days later, where I shared my feedback. The response was indifference without offering options. So, they might do go work here, not so sure in my case. However, plan on paying big $$$ for services. read more

I think the doctors are competent but prices have increased quite a bit. For a small, short procedure done in October of this year (maybe 10 minutes long), the same procedure doubled in November. Although the office accepts insurance payments, they do not go by what the insurance company agrees to pay. They are now so expensive my spouse and I go to another dermatologist in the area. read more

We used generic accutane for acne. Dr Elizabeth Vierra gave us a high dogase and never offered a lower dosage option. I didn't know that was a possibility. There are many side effects that can be permanent. If you chose to take it make sure you find a doctor who gives you the options of low dosage and try that first. read more

I have been going to this practice for many, many years. Although Dr Mark Vierra is my primary dermatologist, I have also seen Dr. Barber on occasion and Dr. Ruth Larson many times. They are all wonderful and caring doctors. I have had many brown spots on my face and especially my nose for some time. I was told that Dr. London specialiZed in laser surgery. I decided to go to Dr. London and I can't say enough about how pleased I am with the results. The brown is totally gone from my nose and from the sides of my face. Dr. London is a pleasure to work with and Highly recommend her if you need laser work done. In addition, I found that her prices were very reasonable. read more

I recently became a Licensed Esthetician, and therefore was further educated on the risks of sun damage and the consequences it can cause. I immediately became concerned for my mom, who has spent many years in the sun, and had some spots I thought she should have looked at by a professional. I'm very OCD about only going to the best of the best, and after much research, I decided on Dr.Larson. Her background and recognition in the industry was impressive, and I knew she was the one! As soon she walked in the room, I knew I had made the right decision. She has a kind, loving, and warm personality that immediately put my mom at ease. Her expert eyes cleared her of anything suspicious, which was an incredible relief! She educated us on what to look for, and what is considered benign. She was quick, efficient, and professional. THANK YOU DR.LARSON! Ironically enough, when I was on their site, I recognized another name...Dr.Rubin! I actually went to her years ago when she was at a different office for my acne, and she led me through my journey with Accutane, which changed my life. She also has great bedside manner, and is very kind and comforting. Also, kudos to the girls in the front. I called around to many Dermatology offices, and ruled some out simply on the fact that the girls on the phone were rude. First impression on an office is huge, and every time I spoke to someone on the phone at this office, they were kind, understanding, informative and gave me a sense of comfort. It is recognized, and appreciated. One last thing is that we do not have insurance, and it was a pleasant surprise that their self-pay prices are affordable. I have gone through several Dermatologists over the past few years in both San Diego and Orange County. Most don't know there a** from there head giving me all sorts of dumb advise when it comes to irregular vs possible moles that might be cancer. I went to Bernardo Dermatology and Dr .London was great as she examined my entire body and took pictures of any possible moles to watch and or remove. I came back for a 2nd visit and had one mole removed and came back for an additional removal of the same area to accomplish clear borders for that area on the skin. I was relived that everything came back ok and the follow-up by the staff was excellent over this 2 week period. I would recommend Dr .London and the team at Bernardo Dermatology to anyone who is wanting a complete, honest and caring examination of their skin. read more

Wow is all I can say. I called to make an appointment with the dermatologist. It was my first time calling to try out a new business here in Poway. When the lady answered the phone she seemed like something was bothering her. I said "hi I'd like to schedule an appointment and I've never been here before. She immediately just ask my name, address, insurance.... I had to stop her after she asked for my insurance bc she sounded so irritated that she had to take a call and do her work. I ask her if this was a bad time? I could clearly tell she was irritated. She said no and asked rudely for my address. I stopped her and said I'm sorry but you don't seem pleasant at all and I'll just search for another dermatologist. I then asked for her name and she hung up on me. I couldn't believe it. I will reach out to the doctors there to also let them know their front desk staff is deterring potential clients away from them with a very poor attitude. read more

People should know what they are in for, when visiting this office: ********************************************************************* 9/17/2010 Okay, I'd have to admit that the doctor who treated me was great, and his assistant was fantastic as well. They were very knowledgeable and efficient. They made sure I was comfortable, and kept me laughing throughout the procedure. The problem I had was with the front desk people. I should have known about their service when I called to make an appointment. They put me on hold for over ten minutes. When someone finally picked up, the whole time I was making an appointment and giving my information, she was gossiping with someone at the office, and I wasn't sure if she really heard me or not. Yes, she was holding two conversations at once, and I had no idea when she was talking to me or this other person (who I'm assuming was her coworker). She told me to fill out all the paperwork before I got there, and I did. When I was done with my procedure and was checking out, the front desk lady saw me but didn't help me for a while. When she did finally help me, she asked me what my deductible was. I told her I wasn't sure because I had new insurance. She then told me I had to pay the entire amount due. I told her that my deductible was something really low, like $100 or $200, and she told me the deductible was usually $500 or $600 and it was their policy that I had to pay for the entire amount. I would have thought that they should have found this information out from my insurance beforehand, or asked me to get that information before my procedure was done!! I wound up paying for the whole sum because she told me it was their "procedure". I called my insurance as soon as I got home, and sure enough, my deductible was $250!! I called the dermatology office back, and I'm not sure if it was the same lady, but she quickly said, "well, you're just gonna have to call our billing office, I cannot help you." Sure enough, I call the billing office, and the phone was busy for about 30 minutes, and when I finally got through, it was voicemail. The service at the front desk was HORRIBLE! That is too bad because the doctor and assistant were so great. ************************************************* UPDATE 11/1/2010: So, I obtained my service on 9/17/2010, and I had to pay the entire sum of the treatment because I did not know the exact deductible on hand, and they would not allow me to call my insurance to find out (as seen in my previous review). And yes, this dermatology office is "in-network" for my insurance. I called mid October to see when I'll be getting my refund, and they promised me at that time that they will be sending me a check on 10/25, as that was their billing cycle. Today is 11/1, and no check. I called them back, and they said, "well, we still have no word from your insurance company about your biopsies, so you may end up owing more money to us. We are not refunding you." So, I asked, "do I owe more money or am I getting a refund back? What is going on here? I'll pay if I owe, but you need to let me know what the balance is." It turns out my insurance company never got a claim from them about this said biopsy! The dermatology office said, "that's funny, we'll send it to them again, and it will take 30-45 days". I've never had problem like this with any doctor or hospital nor my insurance company before, and how can this medical office just not follow up? So, I have to wait at least another month for a refund for a service that was rendered on September 17th!!! May be I'll get my refund back by Christmas? I WILL NEVER GO TO THIS OFFICE AGAIN! read more

Went in for complimentary full body exam check. After that was complete asked about a skin tag on hand. A skin tag so small, you couldn't see it, but you could feel that it was there. Was informed that it was a wort and that the doctor could freeze it. Cool i thought. She then gets the liquid nitrogen and uses an applicator that was the size of a QUARTER on a 'wort' the size of a small freckle. But who am i to question a doctor. The next few days that would started bubbling over, and ended up having a open would for 2 + weeks. Neosporin did very little. The end result was a very red scar on my hand, and a 135 dollar bill a week later. Would not recommend read more

Such a great experience! I went here for my first skin check ever and saw Dr Elizabeth Vierra. She was incredible. She had the best bedside manner. She was thorough and quick, while remaining really friendly. I will definitely be back! My only note and it's a minor one, is that the reception girls are really chatty with each other. I moved to Poway from another state so I needed to find all new doctors. My daughter had some skin issues so I toke her in to Dr. Vanessa London. She is so darling coupled with professional. She talked directly to my 11 year old daughter, treating her like a young lady. She also had a very suspicious mole on her head and Dr. London took a thorough look and decided to take it off on the spot and send it in to the lab. We've now seen her a few times and we are so happy to have found her! I definitely recommend Dr. London! My rating is strictly for Dr. London. On a side note...the front desk staff are not extremely friendly or helpful in person or on the phone. Kind of disappointing but I don't have to interact too much with them so I try to overlook it for great Dr. Care . The gal who checks me out in the little side office is very nice. I have been a patient of Dr. Elizabeth Vierra's for years. I have been to many doctors for many reasons, but I have never seen one with a better bedside manner. I am a complete needle/surgery phobe and she says I am one of her best patients. For one thing, the waiting room is very zen. There are murals, fountains, and sculptures scattered everywhere. It sets a calming mood and is reassuring when you are about to have your face cut, cauderized, and stitched. She has a very friendly, nuturing manner and so does the surgeon, Dr. Shipman. They have done some very gross procedures on me and have gotten me through them without a tear or undue stress. Not all doctors have the same effect on me so these two are worth a million bucks. I shudder to think what I'll do when they retire. It is my biggest fear. read more

I visited dr. London for a minor surgery; I am pleased with her work and her attitude. Front office and nurses were great as well. I have been having issue with accountant though; they overcharged me and after over a month of follow up calls, still do not have my money. Ive been twice in the last couple years to have a few questionable moles checked out. Even though E. Vierra is friendly enough, she and the rest of them are money hungry. She will cut off anything you think is weird even if she says it looks fine and send you a fat bill. The front desk took my insurance card and didn't tell me they didn't accept my insurance. Yes I now know I need to make sure myself but I'm young and ive never had a DR's office do that. So I didn't know until a month later when I got a $230 bill. And I'm so pissed because today, 5 months later I got another bill for $125 from the pathology company they use. DO NOT GO HERE!!!!! read more

SkinMedica Vitalize Peel The Vitalize Peel is a superficial peel for patients with mild to moderate skin conditions including fine lines, sun damage, pigmentary irregularities and acne and acne scarring. This peel involves a blend of peeling agents: hydroxyl acids, beta hydroxyl acids, and resorcinol. Retinoic acid is applied as a final step. A hand-held fan is used to decrease any burning sensation. There can be up to three days of mild peeling and the procedure is generally repeated every 3-4 weeks. This is the peel ($150.00) I was recommended to have done by Dr. Mark Viera. The only peeling that I have had was around my nose. I was very surprised that nothing was peeling anywhere else on my face. I waited 5 days (hoping something will peel, but it didn't) and I called the office to let them know what happened. Lady I talked to was very nice and told me she will talk to Dr. M. Viera and he will decide what to do. I was hoping for some kind of concern from him , but nothing happened and he never called back. I am very disappointed with that peel and Dr.M. Viera. This was not the first time I have had peel done, and I also have facials . I can honestly say that my simple facials did a lot better job than this peel did, and it wasn't this expensive. read more

Dr Barber: The Best of the Best ... for skin and for compassion I was visiting a friend in San Diego, and we went hiking to some obscure mines near Joshua Tree National Park, four hours away. I was clumsy and stumbled and managed to get quite a few cactus spines in my hand and arm, including some impressively big spines broken off inside my hand. On the way back to San Diego, my friend suggested we stop at his dermatologist's office, Bernardo Derm, even though it was late in the day. The place was closed, but lucky for me, Dr Francis Barber was there, and based on my distress, he decided to help me. He spent an hour pulling out cactus spines. Some sere easy for him, as they protruded, and some needed some "digging." (that is my term, maybe it is minor, minor surgery). He was always concerned about my discomfort during his work on me and always made sure I was comfortable. We chatted about his practice (perhaps he did this to keep my mind off what he was doing to me), and apparently he is an expert on looking at skin cancers, both clinically and cross-sections under the microscope. I Googled him and it seems like he has impressive credentials and I was lucky to get him; he is some sort of genius and yet he spent quite a bit of time helping me on what was probably something someone else could do--he could have sent me to emergency room for a less skilled person to deal with me. We weren't sure if he got all of the spines, but I was sore and tired, and he sent me on with a "souvenir" of a specimen bottle of the big cactus spines he pulled out, to show anyone else who might need to treat me. He gave me a clear perspective on what to do, especially if I encountered future problems. If I lived in San Diego, or anywhere close to San Diego, I would use Dr Barber for anything related to dermatology. He really impressed me--very knowledgeable and compassionate. read more

Visited by Dr. Vanessa London. Some time ago, I called their office to get an appointment with Dr. Dr. Elizabeth Vierra. So, no appointment available soon and the secretary on the phone suggested to have it with Dr. London. Due to my critical skin situation, I took an appointment, to show her the issues I have. At the day of app, she entered the room with her secretary. I found her very nice. However, the way she treated me was very wired. I felt she was not willing to spend enough time to my treatment and I think our whole talk we talked was no more than 5 minutes. What she gave me, was a very general advise, indicating that this is how my skin behaves!! But giving some prescription though. The wired thing was that at the same time of our short talk, I noticed that the secretary was writing the prescription! Even without getting directly advised by the Dr. London! I felt the secretary was told the prescription even before entering the room to examine me, it was probably from the application forms. At the end, the secretary gave me the prescription papers and also some samples later on. read more
