Monmouth Historic Inn & Gardens - Living Room

Monmouth (Natchez, MS)…read more The house is absolutely stunning!!! The staff there is so freaking friendly. And the food,... omggggg it was so good. I got the pork chop and *starts drooling* it was fantastic!! The home was built in 1818 by John Hankinson, a postmaster, lawyer and, steamboat entrepreneur, during the depression that followed the War of 1812. The mansion was a brick two-story in the Federal style. Hankinson and his wife died soon after completing the house and the house was sold at a public auction to Calvin Smith, who one year later sold the property to John Anthony Quitman, the future Governor of Mississippi. John Quitman, originally of New York City, was a partner in a successful Natchez law firm and married Eliza Turner, a member of one of the most prominent families. Quitman purchased Monmouth in 1826. The house was extensively renovated in 1853 in the Greek Revival style. The original brick was covered by stucco, scored to look like stone, and the portico was added to the front, along with the four square columns supporting it. John A. Quitman died at Monmouth on July 17, 1858, apparently a victim of what was then called the National Hotel Disease an ailment similar to Legionnaire's Disease, which many American politicians contracted after staying or dining at the National Hotel in Washington, D.C. His wife died a year later and their children took control of the home. In 1862, when Natchez was attacked by the Union army, most of the slaves fled. Most of Quitman's original possessions were either stolen in 1863 or sold by Quitman's daughters in 1865 due to financial difficulty. The house was spared from further damage during the war, as the daughters befriended a Union general and pledged loyalty to the United States. In 1866, three of the daughters purchased their siblings' share of the property, and by 1890, Annie Rosalie was the sole owner of Monmouth. In 1914, she died and left the home to her nieces, who sold it in 1924. For the next half century, the house was severely neglected with the house and other surviving structures filled with litter and the grounds overgrown. After several changes of ownership, Ronald and Lani Riches of Los Angeles, California, purchased the property in 1978 and restored it to its original condition. The restoration took 3 years. In 1982, after archaeological research determined the location of two small houses used as slave quarters, the buildings were reconstructed on the original sites. Though most of John Quitman's original furnishings had been lost, the house still contained a few pieces such as a sofa, a carved settee, and several chairs. The Riches searched for other furniture and memorabilia from Quitman, and they were able to recover his desk, two four-poster beds, and the Quitman family Bible. Other memorabilia now include the gold sword presented to Quitman by James K. Polk and the United States Congress for his services in the Mexican-American War, as well as the red handkerchief Quitman used to rally his troops.

The "2-bedroom suite" layout was very misleading for three adults. The second bedroom was accessed through the main bedroom, making it awkward for privacy and much better suited for parents traveling with young children. The sitting area was essentially non-functional, leaving us with nowhere to comfortably spend time outside the main bedroom. The room had an extremely strong floral fragrance that was overwhelming and made one member of our party feel nauseated. While the grounds are beautiful in photographs, they clearly needed maintenance. Areas were overgrown and potentially hazardous for elderly guests or those with mobility issues. The parking area became muddy and flooded after only a mild rain. The outdoor furniture was dirty, weathered, and in some cases had exposed metal that made us uncomfortable using it. There was also a noticeable odor of cat urine around parts of the property. The bathroom initially appeared updated, until you encountered the wooden plank transition into the shower and the toilet area, which was so small it was difficult to even turn around comfortably. We specifically chose Monmouth for the immersive historic inn experience and instead found it to be an expensive disappointment and a $300 mistake.

We started talking about where to stay over breakfast that morning and picked Vicksburg, MS. We noticed Riverwalk Casino and with a decent rate of around $100 it was a perfect fit. Check in took longer that we were used to as a "regular" was complaining about his regular high roller room not being available...yawn. Once settled in we hit the floor. This is my second casino experience; Riverwalk isn't fancy like the Beau Rivage on the Coast. Mostly penny slots and games which was fine by me. I didn't want to loose a ton; just have a little fun for the evening. I gave the GF $30 and off she went! We jumped around a bit; having luck here and there. When the drink dude finally came around I tipped big with instructions to keep 'em coming! That worked pretty well for the evening. GF comes back broke an hour or so later. I left her $20 ahead! Buddy and I ended up over at the video poker table actually near the drink station so we were covered on drinks from 20ft away. We finally called it a night and headed to our clean rooms. Woke up refreshed right next to the mighty Mississippi River. Couple of things to point on to future visitors. YES, you can smoke in the casino so there's gonna be a smoke smell. If your offended by that smell stay away; smokers like me enjoying a rare indoor smoking experience in a public building. There is NO SMOKING in the hotel tower itself so there's that. One star knocked off because this is the only hotel in modern times where there wasn't a mini fridge in the room. We use them to keep my GF's insulin cool while traveling.

All in all, a terrible experience and a lesson learned to pass this establishment and stay and gamble or stay in the hotel elsewhere. If I could rate this place no stars, I would.

This gal and her family was not staying here. One word GROSS. We got back into the car and drove across the way to Holiday Inn Express, and THANK GOD we did. Not only did they have rooms, they gave us a great "negotiated" rate! We (my husband and two girls 3 & 4 months) got a Suite ($100 per night) and it was super clean and roomy. Breakfast in the morning was such a treat too. My 3yr old was in LOVE LOVE LOVE with the Automatic Pancake maker and I was diggin the yummy coffee. They staff was the most accommodating group! Always greeting with a warm smile and asking if everything was good. One of the staffers even gave my mother-in-law his cell number in the event that she (we) needed anything. I have never ever experienced service like this. And I have stayed at the best of the best hotels around the states (Four Seasons, Ritz, etc) We will be staying here again next year and the year after, and the year after that!

I arrived just after 11p to check in. Levi was at the desk and told me the hotel was sold out. I showed him my email confirmation. He repeated they were sold out and canceled my reservation. I asked if the hotel would be putting me up someplace else. He told me it was up to me to figure it out and he didn't know the hotel policy for this and he left. It was 1130pm and they were sending a single female out in a strange city to fend for herself! Not okay. I was able to get some help from Ciera when I explained it to her. She was able to get me a room at the West Monroe location after midnight, but only for 1 night and at a higher rate. Ciera would have Denice (manager) call me in the morning. I went there and they said I had to check out in the morning. I checked out at 830am, Denice never called so I went back, she was not there and this hotel was still sold out. Left it up to me again. Luckily a room opened up at the West Monroe location and I was then able to stay there for the remaining 5 nights, again for more money than my original reservation. I have tried to reach Denice multiple times and to this day I have not heard a word from her. We are Hilton gold members. We travel a decent amount. This is not how things are handled when you oversell.

After a while, it seemed as if the problem was not going to be resolved. The whole point of having rooms put under one name was to make it convenient for everyone. Since our names were not found, I thought we may have to find another place to stay. Finally, the representative found us a room. It seem to have been a problem for most of group locating names on the reservation listing. The room looked very nice and comfortable just by view. The real surprise came when we decided to rest for a while in bed. It was the worse mattress experience. Talking about looks and a surprise of discomfort. The pillows appeared to be comfortable but they were not at all. They only looked like they were comfortable. The pillows went flat just by laying on them. The mattress was like sleeping on the floor. This was the worst mattress. The toilet stool was extremely loose and too close to the floor. This was the worst sleeping experience we have encountered in a very long time. We could not sleep for tossing and turning. We were not able to sleep good or rest at all in bed for the 2 days we stayed. The only time we were able to get a good night sleep is when we arrived home. We went straight to bed right after we walked through the door even though it was a beautiful day and a holiday at that. We were just too tired to go any further thanks to the very uncomfortable bed and pillows a lack of sleep.
