We were there in the spring and the weather was cool and the air filled with scents of honeysuckle and fresh grass. Scott and his wife made a delicious country breakfast with eggs that tasted really good. The coffee kept coming as did the history of the house and its surroundings. Mississippi is worth visiting and Collina's is most definitely worth staying at.

You will be a little leery but once you ease around the corner and see the front of the house, you will be amazed! The property is beautiful as well as the wild deer that may run in front or along side your car. It is like you drove back in time. You would never imagine such a beautiful place would be hidden down that street. Scott has done a beautiful job of providing modern conveniences without taking away from the historical ambiance of the home. Satellite TV, hidden mini fridge, microwave and Keurig (yes there are pods and bottled water for you to use or bring your favorite) just to name a few. We were late getting back to our room that night and we were concerned about waking the family that was in the next room but with the quality construction of yesteryear, it provided an excellent sound barrier, they didn't hear us and we didn't hear them at all. The king size bed was very comfortable, not too hard and not too soft, just right! We slept wonderful. Scott will make arrangements with you for breakfast in the morning, time, any allergies or dietary restrictions. From the china place settings to the last bite, breakfast was perfect. If you are lucky enough, Diane (I believe), Scott's mother will be there to give you a wonderful history lesson while he is preparing your meal! If you have never stayed at a Bed & Breakfast before or even if you do all the time, this is one you will love! I promise!

I've walked through many historic homes looking and not touching, but this house is actually a home. There are comfortable chairs and couches that are to be used and enjoyed. A lovely front porch, back patio with fountain, game room/library, music room and dining room are there to be lived in. It is not a museum! Many lovely and comfortable bedrooms, too. We committed to stay there based on her responsiveness. Upon arrival, we were met with wonderful hospitality and the offer for some grilled-cheese sandwiches. Claire could see that we had been riding all morning and knew we could use a pick-me-up. The whole experience was welcoming and cozy. We were able to walk into town and grab a bite to eat and Claire recommended we visit the historic cemetery, so we made the short walk to see it. It's fascinating. If you're looking for a quiet and relaxing getaway, the Collina House fits the bill. I hope to make a return visit in the future.

The positive reviews here and elsewhere date from several years ago. Sadly now (late 2012) this B&B…read moreseems to be occupied only sporadically and has an absentee owner. Much of the structure is semi-derelict and the photographs are misleading. On our stay, we and our friends were the only guests and we had a terrible time. The toilet waste pipework was apparently blocked when we arrived. Our friends were told that their bathroom must not be used. In fact it was the macerator pump in our room that ran, very noisily, through the night, making proper sleep impossible. In the morning (5.30am) we were told that there had been a leak during the night and that now there was no water anywhere in the house. We were given some bottles of mineral water each so that we could clean our teeth, but we were not able to wash or use the lavatory! We left at 6.00am in search of a gas station. We made an immediate written request for a refund. The owner was very slow to respond, and then completely unsympathetic. She has now prevaricated for three weeks. Resolution was promised by a week ago but we have heard nothing and she fails to respond to our follow-up emails. We give up! DO NOT STAY HERE!

It is not as elegant as Anchuca or some of the others, but the hospitality we experienced there was exceptional. The manager who lives on site was gracious, hospitable, friendly, and knowledgeable about the history of the home, its contents, and its former occupants. The off-site owners of Baer House have collected period furnishings that are used throughout the house, and the library in the living room offers several titles for Civil War history buffs. Off-street parking is available behind the house. The space which serves as the dining room and living room today was actually designed and built to be a ballroom. If your guest room is on the second floor, you (and your luggage) will be climbing a long, steep stairway. I am 75 years old, and I would not have been able to get my luggage upstairs without assistance from my husband.

The innkeeper showed us to our room, the master suite, and after we brought our luggage inside, we had a tea party on the veranda, which our kids really loved. Eva, the innkeeper, and Madison, her helper, had great conversation with us as our kids played hide-n-seek before going to the front pond/lake to skip stones off of the bridge. Our room was so spacious, and the bathroom was huge as well. It has a full jacuzzi/hot tub for a bathroom and the walk-in shower has two shower heads and a hand-held shower as well. The bed was incredibly comfortable. In the morning, breakfast was served and both mornings the food was delicious. Eva also gave us some great local places to eat as well. All-in-all, our stay was amazing and exceeded our expectations. Monmouth (Natchez, MS)…read more The house is absolutely stunning!!! The staff there is so freaking friendly. And the food,... omggggg it was so good. I got the pork chop and *starts drooling* it was fantastic!! The home was built in 1818 by John Hankinson, a postmaster, lawyer and, steamboat entrepreneur, during the depression that followed the War of 1812. The mansion was a brick two-story in the Federal style. Hankinson and his wife died soon after completing the house and the house was sold at a public auction to Calvin Smith, who one year later sold the property to John Anthony Quitman, the future Governor of Mississippi. John Quitman, originally of New York City, was a partner in a successful Natchez law firm and married Eliza Turner, a member of one of the most prominent families. Quitman purchased Monmouth in 1826. The house was extensively renovated in 1853 in the Greek Revival style. The original brick was covered by stucco, scored to look like stone, and the portico was added to the front, along with the four square columns supporting it. John A. Quitman died at Monmouth on July 17, 1858, apparently a victim of what was then called the National Hotel Disease an ailment similar to Legionnaire's Disease, which many American politicians contracted after staying or dining at the National Hotel in Washington, D.C. His wife died a year later and their children took control of the home. In 1862, when Natchez was attacked by the Union army, most of the slaves fled. Most of Quitman's original possessions were either stolen in 1863 or sold by Quitman's daughters in 1865 due to financial difficulty. The house was spared from further damage during the war, as the daughters befriended a Union general and pledged loyalty to the United States. In 1866, three of the daughters purchased their siblings' share of the property, and by 1890, Annie Rosalie was the sole owner of Monmouth. In 1914, she died and left the home to her nieces, who sold it in 1924. For the next half century, the house was severely neglected with the house and other surviving structures filled with litter and the grounds overgrown. After several changes of ownership, Ronald and Lani Riches of Los Angeles, California, purchased the property in 1978 and restored it to its original condition. The restoration took 3 years. In 1982, after archaeological research determined the location of two small houses used as slave quarters, the buildings were reconstructed on the original sites. Though most of John Quitman's original furnishings had been lost, the house still contained a few pieces such as a sofa, a carved settee, and several chairs. The Riches searched for other furniture and memorabilia from Quitman, and they were able to recover his desk, two four-poster beds, and the Quitman family Bible. Other memorabilia now include the gold sword presented to Quitman by James K. Polk and the United States Congress for his services in the Mexican-American War, as well as the red handkerchief Quitman used to rally his troops.

Here is were we are disappointed, the grounds are in horrible shape, this was Labor Day weekend and the grass was knee high. The fountain was dirty and there were stacks of dead limbs in many places. We walked up to dinner from cabin 31 and had to leave the sidewalk because of overgrowth. Being from the south and loving the history of old homes with the grounds and beautiful gardens, I hope this is not a sign of budgetary issues, usually this is the first cutback made when trouble arises.

The butler's pantry had a variety of snacks and drinks available, and our room had a mini fridge and coffee maker. Breakfast the next morning was wonderful. I definitely will return.
