I ordered a plain mirror and several thick glass shelves for my mini bar from Bernie's Glass & Mirror. While the quality of the mirror and shelves was outstanding and transformed my mini bar into something remarkable--with my contractor installing everything flawlessly--the overall experience was marred by the shockingly poor customer service. The price was very fair. Despite providing the accurate measurements, I received glass shelves in the wrong size. Instead of acknowledging the error, Bernie refused to take responsibility. In fact, he was furious, and he treated me condescendingly, even going so far as to mock and humiliate me in his store in front of his colleagues. His hostility and dismissive attitude made what should have been a simple correction (with an apology) into an unnecessarily prolonged and unpleasant ordeal. This review is based on at least 3 visits to the shop myself over a period of many weeks, so it was not just "one off day". It is baffling that a business with such a longstanding history in Bed-Stuy can treat a customer with such disrespect. I pride myself on being courteous and respectful to all people, yet I felt insulted by the way I was spoken to. For installation, I trusted my own contractor--and for good reason. I would never rely on Bernie's so-called expertise again, despite them saying only they can be trusted to properly install a mirror. It was a breeze for my contractor. I will say that one other person that works there (I forgot his name) was extremely kind and helpful the few times I spoke with him. He actually showed that he cared about my experience and service. Not the case at all for Bernie. I wholeheartedly encourage others to shop elsewhere if they value respectful treatment along with quality products. While the items I received met my expectations, the experience left a sour taste that no one should have to endure. read more

Bernie came yesterday morning to remove a broken window to repair in his shop. Asked to look at a different window we were unable to open, he checked and found that the springs no longer worked, said he would be back between 1 and 4. He returned at 2, installed the repaired window, took apart the window requiring new springs, installed new springs and reassembled the window. I was shopping for a replacement window for my brownstone. I decided to use a small business thinking that I was doing a good thing. I found this business by searching the internet. I called before I went there and spoke to a person that seemed to not like her job. Once there I informed a worker that I wanted to have a window replaced and he told me I had to speak to the owner, that is when I met Bernie; it all went downhill from there. He asked me what I needed and I informed him of what I wanted; I also told him that I wanted to patronize a small business instead of the big box stores. He then stated that he had been there to serve the community for 68 years. I saw pictures of his father on the wall at the business ( his father would be disappointed in him). He asked me for the window size which I had recorded on my phone along with pictures and a video of the very old window. I apparently couldn't find it fast enough for him. He was rushing me stating that he had another job to get to, "an old lady". I was not allowed to explain to him what I needed, why I needed it or when I needed it. He kept cutting me off saying that he didn't want to hear the back story. He had no use for pleasantries. He was not interested in building a rapport with a potential customer. It took longer than it should have for me to explain what' I needed from his business because he kept cutting me off. I finally had to explain to him that it is important for me to understand the process and how it works. I was not interested in being told what I needed without explanation. He was very rude, abrupt, abrasive, arrogant, unprofessional and unpleasant. I told him that I was apparently wasting his time and I walked out. He was pointedly rude as if it was personal. I was having the worst day, my car was stuck with a dead battery on the side of the road and phone was dead. I had asked a few people passing by if they could give me a jump and nobody would help me. Bernie pulled up with his work van, saw I was in distress and asked if there's any way he could help me. Not only did he jump my car to get it started again, but he saw two of my tires were almost flat and filled them for me. We had a pane fall out of our 100-year-old window. Really the entire thing should be replaced but I love our windows and am reluctant to modernize. Trying to find someone to insert a pane of glass for a window hung with an old chain was just not working. After months passed I stumbled on Bernie's web site and he agreed to try. He took apart the window so fast it almost gave me heart palpitations but then he took half the window to his truck parked outside and expertly cut a new pane pretty much freehand - fit it in perfectly, rehung the ancient window, and it was a pleasure to talk to during the short time that it took him. He even recaulked another pane getting ready to jump out. Someday I will pay him to replace the windows but for now it was a bargain and a pleasure to have him do the repair. read more

Tenant's window had a crack in it which caused a failed NYCHA inspection. Needed a quick repair of the pane, so contacted the above establishment. The person who answered the phone was perfectly lovely, but told me that since COVID, they were doing things differently, and I had to contact the owner directly to explain the issue, and get a quote, so I proceeded to do so. I was asked for the address in the text, then he proceeded to call me. It was during this call that I should've immediately hung up and tried somewhere else, but I needed help ASAP, so I endured his rude and arrogant manner. He quoted me $288.51 to repair the cracked pane, and when I questioned the price, he proceeded to gruffly explain to me why that was the cost; on top of that, he only accepts CASH (it's 2022). I agreed to the price because I didn't have time to research. He agreed to the job, and said he could do it the next day (remove entire window and return by 4:00), but he would have to come early at 7:00! He said it several times for emphasis, and I agreed; had to take my child to school anyway, so the timing was good. Spoke with the tenant, and she agreed so it was set. The next day, as I saw 7:00 rapidly approaching, I text to give him details on my location because there is construction going on next door. I hear nothing back, so I called, and it went to VM saying, "Don't leave a message, text," so I text again, with urgency, because time was going by, and soon I would have to leave out, but still no answer (in that text I reminded him that he was the one adamant about the early hour). About 15 minutes later, he calls me back with the ugliest attitude, telling me his HELPER had just walked through the door, and he was on his way! I reiterated the time he agreed to, and he asks me, what was he supposed to do? His helper was late, and he was on his way! He said he is OLD, and he needs help, as if we had met before, and I were familiar with his circumstances! I said, WOW, because I was truly in disbelief with this man's WRONG AND STRONG indifference! He says, no, what? You said WOW, and now I don't know if I want to do the job, so I said WOW again because I truly had no other words for the exchange! He said, NO, YOU SAID WOW AGAIN, I don't think I want to come, like some petulant toddler! I stayed silent because I had nothing else to add. He says, you're being quiet, does that mean you still want me to come? I said it's whatever, I need the service, and he says Goodbye...this is where you end the call, and I hung up! He FINALLY arrives, and double parks on my busy street, and IMMEDIATELY gets into a back and forth with another driver (who has all rights to be pissed because he is now blocking traffic that was already stalled due to construction), again, wasting my time! He finally gets through the door to the affected window, and says let's go back downstairs to write up a receipt. That gets done, he demands an $100 deposit, and pushes a business card on me, AS IF I WOULD RECOMMEND HIM TO ANYONE I HAD ANY RESPECT FOR!!! I now am running late, so I grab my son, letting him know I had to go. He says he will return the window later that afternoon, and I let him know that I would not be there, but my daughter would. He took her name/number, and I left, hopefully never to see this man again! Don't you know he still called me to say he was on his way back with the window, so I said, "You said you would call my daughter, I'm not home," to which he responds to the person in the car, "Oh yeah, the daughter, the # is on the receipt!"...I hung up. PLEASE DO YOUR RESEARCH AND DO NOT WAIT TILL THE LAST MINUTE AS I UNFORTUNATELY DID...hope this helps you make better choices! read more
