This was a brilliant little treasure that's located at the Epicurean Hotel in Tampa, and just across the street from the esteemed Bern's Steak House. They have a terrific selection of bourbons, scotches, and other types of whiskey, in addition to a wide range of spirits and a diverse selection of wine varietals from around the world. My friends who joined us at the Epicurean to stay for a few nights to celebrate my wife's birthday. We had enjoyed breakfast and coffee down the street on South Howard when we decided to stroll on in to take a look at what they offered. I picked up some lovely treasures including a Double Oak Peerless bourbon, a Twelve Years Old 1792 bourbon, The Keepers Release by Maker's Mark, a wheat whiskey by WhistlePig, and a single-barrel pick by Clonakilty Irish Whiskey. I stopped myself from buying more as there were at least five more bottles I was eyeing. They have a tremendous selection with a very knowledgeable staff that allows you to try certain picks if they are open and available for tasting. And the ambiance is very clean, modern, and easy to navigate. read more

Possibly one of the most uncomfortable experiences I've had while shopping. I stopped in with my wife and her best friend after hearing about the extensive bourbon selection, it was finally bourbon hunting day. As someone who spends a few thousand a year to extend my collection, I really wanted to walk in and find gems however from the moment I walked through the doorway I was met with hostility from the two employees they had working. To the right of the checkout counter they have a majority of their selection and I let them know I was there for a bourbon hunting day and wanted to view a few bottles. The woman stood to my immediate left and asked why I was looking at bottles each time I pulled one off of the shelf. The man stood about three feet behind me and trailed every step I took as if I was going to make a break for it. Any question I asked was treated with hostility and snobbish behavior that I see as unfitting to the many experiences I've had at the restaurant. read more

Well. It's been a hot minute since my last review, so I figured I should make this one count! I'm no stranger to Bern's. I've been coming to the restaurant for over 10 years now -- well before I ever moved to Tampa. And when they opened the Epicurean Hotel, I'd been meaning to visit their wine shop. But I never wanted to valet, and parking seemed like a chore, so I kept putting it off. Well go figure, they have their very own designated parking spots in the garage just for them and the ice cream parlor -- no valet necessary. That was all the incentive I needed to make the quick drive over here. Since Christmas is just around the corner, I wanted to grab one more thing for my fiance, who is a bourbon aficionado. Isn't everyone these days though? And since my searches at Total Wine and ABC had proven to be fruitless, I thought Bern's wine shop might have a more interesting selection -- and I was right! This is the only place I've found Buffalo Trace in Tampa. Granted, I'm sure it's around, but I'm not stalking stores daily... nor am I spending nearly enough to be a VIP to get access to such things (which is a bit ridiculous, considering this is not a pricey bottle). They also had a good selection of other bottles that I haven't seen in other stores, but I don't know nearly enough about bourbon to tell you anything about them. I bought that bottle of Buffalo Trace and that was it, knowing full well I would soon bring my fiance back after Christmas so he could browse for himself. Their selection in general might not be huge like Total Wine since they are a pretty small store, but they do have a wide variety of price points from what I could tell from browsing the champagne section as well. Easily one of my favorite liquor stores in town. There are designated parking spots in the parking garage if you need to run in and out, but if they are taken you need to valet, which is a bit of a hassle when they are busy. The store itself is far bigger inside than you would expect, and they carry a nice variety of wine, champagne, and hard liquor. Every time I have been here the person working has been very knowledgeable and able to answer my random questions. They have also given excellent suggestions for a comparable liquor when I've been looking for a favorite that they don't stock. If you are on their mailing list, they will let you know about both free and paid events they have coming up. On National Gin Day I went with friends to a free gin tasting here. Most recently, I went to a champagne and caviar event, which was very well organized with interesting speakers from both Taittinger champagne and the caviar representative. read more

For a small shop, they have a great selection. Located in the Epicurean Hotel, the Bern's Fine Wines shop is a fun place to go. They have some of the most knowledgeable staff around and won't steer you wrong. But if you want to browse and select something with out assistance, they give you plenty of space for that. They are a small shop, but what they lack in quantity, they make up for in interesting selections you won't find at the big stores around town. They have a great selection of wines from everywhere (the Port section is surprisingly small though). The liquor section is where it's at. They have fine Scotch, Bourbon, Gin, Tequila and more. They have store picks, where they bought and bottled the whole barrel with the distillery, and you usually can't go wrong with those. They also let you taste a lot of the items in that section, which is terrific, since dropping 100+ on an unknown bottle is always mentally challenging. read more

Perhaps Tampa's most eclectic collection of fine spirits. I purchased a bottle of 14 year old George Dickel bourbon, at the time I did not realize how rare this bottle of bourbon was until I wanted another bottle. That seems to be the norm here, bottles often circulate. If you find a bottle that amazes you chances are that it won't be in stock again. Part of the reason for this scarcity is the limited quantity of certain liquors made exclusively for Bern's. I also purchased a bottle of small batch single barrel Russell's reserve. Apparently specific barrels are tasted and selected to be included in the Bern's collection and some are sold from the collection. I was fortunate enough to sample the 40 year old Compass whiskey also made for Bern's. The concept of this liquor store is unique and sometimes I will stumble on a rare bottle. That is why I continue to shop here. Staff are hit or miss and the prices can be inflated compared to the competition. I have not attended a tasting event yet, but will soon. read more

I prefer to purchase my wine and/or alcohol here because of the ease of convenience. There are designated parking spots for the Wine Shop so you don't need to valet park. The staff is friendly, helpful, and willing to quickly educate you if you need any assistance in choosing a wine. Tampa has some very excellent places to buy a nice bottle of wine, and also to spend some quality time chatting with extremely knowledgeable wine experts. I've always found the incredible wine cellar at Bern's Steak House to be the best of the best in town, and so I was quite excited to learn that the Laxer family had recently opened a retail establishment dedicated to educating the public and helping us to purchase fine bottles of wine. Those who've already discovered the decadent pleasures of the Chocolate Pi confectioner's store at the new Epicurean Hotel are but steps away from the Bern's Fine Wines & Spirits shop located in the same hotel. The Epicurean is directly across S. Howard Avenue from Bern's Steak House in South Tampa. If you pull up to the Epicurean's valet parking station and tell them you're there to visit the wine shop, they will direct you to some free parking spaces in the garage. Walk south down Howard Avenue, away from Chocolate Pi (Be strong, Yelpers. You can do this!) and you'll discover that the wine shop is about 10 steps away. Inside the doors and you'll see a vast collection of wines, neatly organized by types and regions, with prices to fit most all budgets. I say "most" because if you're used to drinking your wine out of cardboard boxes with a plastic screw top that you bought at one of those discount "Club" mega-marts, then you might want to look elsewhere for your fermented grape juice. Truthfully, they have bottles of wine on display starting at about $10 all the way up to hundreds of dollars. Bern's offers fine wines, ports, Champagne, spirits and cheeses from around the globe, and their staff has the expertise to help you select the perfect wine to serve for your special occasion. Regardless if you're an experienced wine aficionado, or a first-time buyer they can help you to find a wine which will fit your budget and your palate. The shop has a tasting bar, and that will likely be your first stop to sample a little bit of different reds or whites as they help guide you through the different choices. They'll ask what you're planning to serve, and how you plan to prepare your meal - with a heavy sauce, or something lighter. Less than impressed. A friend of mine received an email from Bern's Fine Wines regarding a wine tasting and we decided to check into it. We arrived at the address listed on the email (Bern's Restaurant - 1209 Howard) and valet parked to only be told that the tasting "was perhaps across the street" - minor detail. Once in the wine store we weren't greeted (which is odd because there were only 2 other people in the store) we walked over to the serving table and still weren't greeted or acknowledged by the server. So I asked if we could sample some wine and the server unwillingly obliged and mentioned something about only one bottle of wine remaining. No mention was even made of the selection of wine poured for us and we weren't offered any of the other wines which were clearly available. I've had better wine tasting experiences at publix! Apparently not learning our lesson from all this, we selected three bottles of wine to purchase anyway and waited patiently to check out where yet again a lack of interest and organization caused us to stand and wait for well over 5 minutes until one of the employees behind the counter noticed we were waiting with well over a hundred dollars worth of wine to purchase. Overall, they do have a good selection of wines but they are items that could be found elsewhere. The reason one goes to this type of establishment is for outstanding service and personal recommendations; neither of which we received. Will I return? Probably not. read more

I cannot say enough good things about this place. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable and always willing to help. They have great wines at every price point. They range from $9 to several hundred but they treat each customer as if they were buying a $200 bottle. You really get that one on one experience that tends to be lacking in some of the larger stores. My only issue is the parking, since its now in a hotel I wasn't sure where to park. When the valet came up to my car I let him know that I was just there for the wine store and he directed me to a set of spaces where I could park myself. It would have been nice if that was spelled out on their website. read more
