A little sign proclaims that this confectionery was invented for an emperor several millennia ago. It's fascinating to watch as the chef starts with a piece of maltose sugar, which is elastic and this is formed into a ring shaped and with repeated dipping into toasted flour to keep the strands separate, is repeatedly stretched and twisted with each repetition tripling the number of strands. The final resulting collection of fine strands is then divided into small bunches which are put around crushed peanuts. Eaten immediately, these are soft and quite moreish. The chef says that these can be kept in the fridge but they will turn hard. It's entertainment as much as food which draws the crowds. Fun to watch but prices are a bit steep at £3 for one box and £10 for 4 boxes.

Deliciousness at its best. Seaweed rice cakes, muesli like woah, and so much other good stuff. Walking into this place made me weak in the knees. I want it all! All! On my dinner plate. And in my lunch box. And in my bowl with milk in the morning. Too bad I can't afford it all. Although the store doesn't have astronomical prices and I do think it's cheaper than Holland and Barrett, it is more expensive than your chains like Iceland or Tesco Metro. Sad but true. The prices were NOT terrible, but more than I felt like spending. On a day I feel like treating myself, however, I will definitely go back. Also, as a note, I heard one member of the staff advising a customer on nutrition, and I think he gave some good suggestions. Basic, at least in my mind which tends to have a nutrition fix, but not something all people think about - whole grain instead of white bread and potatoes, honey instead of sugar, etc. Sum it up in one word? Knowledgeable. In two? Knowledgeable and helpful. I'm going to have to go back. The only reason I knocked it down a star I price is because it's more expensive than general grocery stores, but that's always the case in this sad sad world. Woe is us poor organic food lovers.

Had a perfect mocha paired with a jam filled donut baked at the St John Bakery. Everything was absolutely perfect. The raspberry jam paired perfectly with the mocha without being too overly sweet. Overall this shop would be a perfect stop for lighter fare, fresh baked bread, and they also carry a fair diverse selection of wine for a small shop. Certainly worth the stop in the area. It's located right in the center of a well traveled shopping area next to Waterloo. The outdoor seating made for a great place to enjoy it all despite it being just a touch drizzly.

My friend wanted to come in because she was starving and wanted to get something from the display windows. We found a cute little bakery area and a butchers area, in which we proceeded to order a couple baked goods to satiate our hunger. There was some ground meat with a crust on the outside that was absolutely fantastic. The mince pies were okay, but I might just not be used to the taste of mince pie (I'm still not sure what it should taste like..). Then we noticed stairs! There was a plethora of other things to see. Fresh produce, coffee shop, extensive wine collection, groceries, and a restaurant! I loved the little restaurant hidden in the store. It was obviously the place to have a quiet lunch with friends. The atmosphere was relaxed. If I didn't live an ocean and some thousands of miles away, I would love to spend my afternoons here sipping on coffee and enjoying a meal with friends. Amongst four of us, we shared a turkey and cranberry sandwich, mushroom risotto, salad, and squash appetizer. The food was light, healthy, and filling. I could tell a great amount of care went into picking fresh ingredients. Greensmiths has a very young and happy vibe to it. I loved coming in here and I loved browsing around. I went for an article I was writing and had a great time (met a fisherman who hated fish - go figure), but once was enough for me. I do not do well with 6am starts. And the last thing I feel like pre-coffee is buying seafood. But I like cooking. I like making tasty things. I like having fresh food that didn't cost the earth in the supermarket (although my local fishmonger is also awesome). I basically want all the good stuff, delivered to my door. Marky Market does that. Not just to your door, but to your office too. I live so close to Billingsgate that I'd have had a very early wake-up call (Mark starts his day at 2:30 am - I'm not even asleep by then a lot of the time). So Qype laughed at me when I got half a kilo of samphire delivered to their office. I made tasty salads with crayfish for a party, everyone was impressed. Guy had a falling-out with T&C which encouraged too much competition at the Oval Farmers, and so the trader has come to Brixton. Believe me, you have never tasted cheese toasties this good in your life. Farmhouse Somerset cheddar....with tomatoe and/or garlic/leeks on the best toasted rye I`ve had in ages. You can also buy chunks of the cheese at the stall. The man works like a beaver....hooking up a generator so the cheese stays cold and the sandwiches grill hot. And they are really hot...I mean, that cheese permeates. I always so no, because they are so filling; but whenever I happen to be in Brixton on a Sunday morning, I make for the market; chat to the trader; and buy a toastie. £3 for a massive (should I say American-size?) sandwich. The first Paxton & Whitfield cheese shop was opened in 1797 and is located on Jermyn street just across from Fortnum and masons. They have an excellent variety of quality cheeses including cheeses from the British isles. Their truffle cheese are particularly excellent. Service is very professional and those working at the store are very knowledgeable about the cheeses. While upscale with a traditional ambiance, the store is also fresh and modern. Highly recommended.
