I love Harbor Island Park! Harbor Island Park is the stretch of land along the bay, just across Harbor Drive from the airport. In my opinion, it has one of the most beautiful views of the San Diego skyline. On a clear day, it is just gorgeous both day and night. There are sidewalks on both sides. Parking can be tricky on busy weekends. There is free street parking and there are free lots, but it is much easier during the week or off-season. Normally, you see fishermen, joggers, and people walking their dogs. There are restaurants, hotel resorts, and conference and event venues. Some of San Diego's best known restaurants are on the edges of Harbor Island Park. You can find some lesser known cafes hidden nearby. There are also some boating clubs along the way. For several years, my husband and I would make a picnic at this park and watch the Fourth of July fireworks. It is one of the best venues, if not the best, to watch the fireworks. I often go for runs or walking with my dog there. Also, it is one of my favorite places to take out-of-town friends to simply check out the view and sit on a bench for conversation. Public bathroom facilities are limited, possibly non-existent, so plan accordingly. All in all, Harbor Island Park is a must for both locals and visitors. read more

The Good: * As mentioned above, the views are second to none and it's a great place to catch a sunset. *Shoreline path for running and walking *Leashed dogs ok *Restrooms *If you plan on visiting, you really should try and make reservations at Tom Ham's Lighthouse restaurant located right on the shore. The Meh: *Not the biggest park in the world but the views make up for it. The Ugly: *Not a whole lot of shade either, so probably not a place to be during a heatwave. A stroll with a view, that is what one could expect when visiting Harbor Island Park. This trail elongates up and down the island and it is a walk most welcomed after a meal and drinks. Staying on Harbor Island at the Hilton had allowed us the opportunity to enjoy the stroll at random. Many folks would bring their pups or simply get their cardio in. Now that I'll be working in the area again, I know I'll be spending more time here. This park is one of the best places to escape the city noise while still getting an incredible view of the San Diego skyline. I have always found it to be peaceful, never too crowded, and a great spot to sit back and enjoy the view of sailboats floating by. The fresh ocean air, open green spaces, and scenic walking path make it a perfect place to clear my mind. Parking has never been an issue for me, and I like that there are plenty of benches, picnic spots, and shady trees to relax under. [So, allow me to explain, the place that is receiving 5-stars is the parking lot alongside the ocean side. I am pretty sure above mentioned business has all kinds of wonderful experiences in store for their customers.] Man I love that I work near here! That should be the end of the review! Hahaha. (Filipino's got that kick-back well established, man I miss those family and friend Gatherings, party with foods and drinks for days, like literally left overs were always great and tasted amazing when re-heated and consumed) The sunshine was sleeping, GOOD, so was I, just like I would tell tourist when I worked in Kauai, HI, you may have arrived in paradise, but you're here to make your OWN paradise, starting with you advocating what you discover and loving what makes you come back. Some might say the constant training of our military across the inlet may contrast with the nature. I beg to differ, having them there made me feel way more secured than the hovering SDPD. They protect all Americans AND others that seek to value American way of life and wish to blend their culture with the many we have accepted as a country. Plus if you haven't witness the focus and precision training when the wind is blowing out the SD I let's birthday cake candles, and the sky is seeing how much water they can drop on you; this is when you should brave that tempest weather and take pride and feel humbled about how hard our daily effort is poor comparison to our mighty military's normal training. Every year, I come to this little park near the SAn Diego airport for Big Bang boom with friends. Usually my fiend sleeps night before and save space across from the hotel. The park is always clean but the sprinklers kept going on every few hours since night before and early morning in July 4th. It was annoying because everything got wet. There was still parking available till lunch time then it got really full. The view of the ocean is really nice and see boats and jet skis go by. The 3 barges of fire works was the best this year. It's also convenient to walk across the street to Hilton to use their restroom. read more

When we visit San Diego, which is often, we usually stay right down the street from Harbor Island. I love being able to get up early and run from our hotel here, catching beautiful sunrises and fantastic views of the downtown skyline. You can run on the sidewalk or the street (look out for cars and bikes!). Definitely a great place for cardio and scenery. read more

This is the perfect place to walk your dog after an airport run early in the morning. Just a few other dog walkers and joggers out with plenty of parking to be found. Even with the big hotels adjacent, it is never crowded. Also a good place to walk after happy hour down at one of the nearby Cohn Restaurants as Mel suggests in her review. When I come early in the morning there is plenty of free parking, free bathrooms and lots of bags for your pets. Harbor Island Park is a strip of land on the "southern" end of Harbor Island. It's nice for walking or planting a lawn chair to suit and view the activities in the Harbor. North Island and its aircraft carriers are directly across the Harbor. Check it out ... it's well worth the stop. read more

After happy hour or dinner it's a nice quiet place to walk, bike or run. You can sit and admire the city skyline, meditate or contemplate life. People walk their dogs here. Great little Park near the airport. We stopped here to relax and take in the views as we waited for friends at the airport. It's a relatively narrow strip with a good path for walking or jogging and plenty of benches along the way. It offers good views of the naval base and city across the bay and we enjoyed watching jet skiers and boaters. My only complaints are the bathrooms which weren't the worst in San Diego but certainly could use a good clean. Lodi hate how parks have stalls without doors. read more

WEDNESDAY EVENING PICNIC BETWEEN WEIRD LOOKING TREES THAT LOOK LIKE BROCCOLI. The park is located west on the island. The first thing you notice when driving towards the park are these weird looking trees segregated from the other trees and then shortly after the rest of the park and parking lot. It's a cute tiny place with a small parking lot, benches, public bathroom, palm trees and regular trees. It's basically the only place you can hang out and picnic (no picnic tables and no grills or coal pits). Love this view point of the city... you can hang out at the restaurants, walk or run the waterfront, sit on the benches and admire the harbor and city, picnic on the park... and Wednesday evenings in the summer watch the sailboat race. Another one of the many beautiful parks and stretches along the San Diego harbor shoreline. During the busy times of the year this area is best accessed by bicycle. That way you get to take in the fresh air and bask in all the heavenly glory. This park gives you an excellent panoramic view of the city line. A quiet, less touristy area to run and have a fantastic view of SD skyline and the water. The whole loop (one end to the other and back around) is about 2.8 miles. Makes for a good loop. I come here after work and it's pretty empty. It's probably the weekend you want to worry about finding parking and such. Parking is no problem on weekdays. We sat in Harbor Island Park for quite a while last weekend when we were in San Diego. We took a walk down the beautiful shoreline path that runs by the beautiful San Diego Bay. We walked from the Sheraton to the end by Tom Hamm's Lighthouse and decided to stop on our way back at the park on a nice bench under an enormous Coral tree. We guessed the age and saw the initials carved into its trunk. Sad to see that they couldn't enjoy it as it was. It was very peaceful except when the car with music blaring drove behind us sitting on the bench. There we could watch everyone walking by and a group of people fishing. It was exciting to see the rods bend hard but then to see sea grass was all they caught. They said they had some luck catching bottom fish earlier. We saw one bend hard like it was a big one but it got away. I really enjoyed the park. It is a wonderful place for people to see the bay and enjoy a beautiful grassy area to spread a blanket and have lunch. We will do just that the next time we come to the Harbor Island Park! read more

I do a lot of picking up my Husband at the airport. I have found this to be the best place to wait for his flight. And conveniently located across from the airport. The prettiest views, with Coronado Navy base across the bay... lots of action to watch, from helicopters to giant ships! I also love Bird Watching there! I also love watching people fish there.. You can just sit down in one of the benches and just inhale the ocean breeze and feel peace and quiet. We used to bring our own food here and pick a spot, sit under a tree and just enjoy a picnic. It's a great place to take your pets for them to run around and just enjoy the scenery with you. it's a place where you can close your eyes and enjoy a quick nap while enjoying the sound of the Sea breeze as it drifts. the park is clean and well kept and hardly any panhandlers around. On our most recent visit, we were welcomed by people who were enjoying the 4th of July weekend and the scene at the park was very lively and full of laughter. It was so nice to be in. This park has the best view of downtown San Diego...bar none. To put it simply - it's breathtaking. It's right next to the airport and several hotels so it's easy to get to, but far enough so it doesn't get too crowded. You can jog here, take a leisurely stroll, walk the dogs while enjoying the view. Day or night, the view is amazing. It's comparable to the view of downtown San Francisco when you're in Treasure Island. But the nighttime skyline with the Coronado Bridge in the background gives it that extra feeling of wonder and awe. But yet I get the feeling that not too many people know about this place. This is THE alternative to waiting in the San Diego Airport cell phone lot. Also a wonderful place to unwind and take a nice walk after dropping off friends and family at the airport! I like to chill here and wait for traffic to die down after dropping friends off at the airport. You can sit in your car or get off for a waterside stroll. There's trash bins nearby along the walk so you can even empty your car out of trash and empty Starbucks cups and such. Super quiet, calm, and soothing with a nice view of the water and "skyline" in the distance. A San Diego airport regular's "best kept secret" - or maybe not anymore. This park is a total gem! The parking is plentiful & free. We parked at a lot across the street from the Hilton. We went on a Holiday wknd and there wasn't very many people there. It is kind of just a long sidewalk along the Bay, but there is a shady grassy area with some benches to sit. And there's benches along the sidewalks. The concrete walk that runs all along the water is perfect for an evening stroll and the the view of downtown during sunset is beautiful. The temperature was perfect with a nice breeze and we used my phone to keep track of our distance and speed (the iPhone app Trail Guru, recommended). We walked nearly two miles and if I'd had walking shoes on, it would have been more. Very nice place to have a picnic overlooking San Diego Bay, Coronado NAS, and the downtown skyline. There seems to be enough parking so I can find a space even on weekends. The trees are nice, the grass is well-kept; the restrooms are tidy (even though there are no doors on the stalls!) There are a lot of fisherman, so keep your eye out for overhead casting. This is also a popular place for weddings. The boardwalk runs about half a mile, so it's a nice place to take a walk, too.
