Best Donuts on 23rd Street still has that sign out, but they aren't Best Donuts anymore. They are now Chong's Donuts. The new people aren't accustomed to early hours - they say they open at 5:00 am, but a month ago, when I was there at 6:30, the front door was locked and the drive through closed. There were people working inside- they were visible through the front windows, but they were very disappointingly not open. 2 weeks ago, when I went back, the doors were locked at 6:30, but the drive through was open. Sadly, they didn't have many donuts ready - no twists, no donut holes, no frosted donuts. I ended up only getting glazed and glad for that. Yesterday, I didn't even try going inside. I just went to the drive through. And they had all the donuts my co-workers wanted - the donut holes, the strawberry frosted, the glazed, the old fashioned. I got extra donut holes to drop off to a friend who is fostering a 3 week old kitten. She needed the delicious treat. Like the former owners of Best Donuts, the people at Chong's Donuts make their donuts without dough enhancers. They allow the donuts to properly rise so they are feather light, tender, and have a lovely developed flavor. The glaze is delicate, lightly flavored to enhance the donut, and coats the donuts to utter perfection. Go, buy your donuts there, they are so delicious. So light. So airy. I've always wanted to try this donut spot when I in town visiting my family and I finally got the chance this past weekend. Located off NW 23rd street, it's in a convenient location with plenty of parking. I walked in and it wasn't busy at all on this Sunday morning which was fine with me because I was still wearing my pajamas. The selection of donuts was pretty impressive and plentiful, I have to say. I got a blueberry cake donut, glazed donut and chocolate glazed with sprinkles donut. The price was really reasonable too. I took my goodies home to eat and I was very pleased with donuts. They weren't too cakey or sweet. They were actually perfect. The prices for the donuts were very reasonable and affordable. Hands down, one of my favorite donut places. Ever. I'm a bit of a donut nut. It's kind of my boyfriend and I's thing to get donuts on Sunday mornings. We just moved to okc and we live fairly close to a rivaling donut chain off of May, but this place takes the cake hands down. Their donuts are sweet, but not too sweet and they actually taste flavorful and not just sugary. While their donuts are great, do not pass up the opportunity to have a sausage roll with cheese (maybe even jalapeño too if you're in the mood). Their spinach and cheese pastry is also one of my favorite weekday morning quickies to grab through their drive through (yes, I said drive through. Extremely convenient). Oh, I love this little place on 23rd. Brilliant sausage rolls - a dozen for about $10, and their donuts are always fresh (twice they've been still warm!). The exterior leaves something to be desired, but the interior is always clean and welcoming and the customer service is always great. I placed a large-ish order on Saturday for pick-up the following Tuesday morning. It was for 120 cherry-filled donut holes for a special event at my son's school. When I arrived to pick them up, they'd made a mistake on the filling and instead filled them with vanilla custard. If these were just for general eating, I would have taken them as-is. But I had to ask them to remake the entire order because this was for a specific thing and cherries were required. So I came back an hour later and not only did they have my order ready, but they also sent me away with the entire old order and an apology. People will make mistakes. That's just going to happen. But how these wonderful people chose to make up for their mistake made all the difference. I think I am happier now than if they'd just gotten it right in the first place! I don't know what governing body oversees the use of words like "Best" or "Coldest" in business names, but they actually got one right with Best Donut. Donuts have never been a particular weakness for me, so until recently my palate had not yet been calibrated for informed donut tasting.
