Leaving your family pet outside of family's care is never an easy decision, but it was one that we needed to make last minute before a two week trip out of the country when our family unexpectedly couldn't stay with our dog. We chose Best Friends Pet Hotel because it had more positive reviews than negative ones and it was close to home. We also loved the fact that we could upgrade our dog's stay to be able to see her in her room and watch her during outside play time. Initially we planned on the individual play package because she is very excitable around other dogs, but after speaking to Alexis early on during Brooklyn's stay, we opted to "try" group play. If things went well, Brooklyn could continue to attend group, but if it wasn't in her or the other dogs' best interest, we would continue with individual play. Alexis and the other staff members worked hard on getting Brooklyn to come out of her shell and made accommodations for her so that she felt comfortable in the presence of the other dogs (for example: bringing her out before the other dogs so that she could get acquainted with the environment). This was truly the BEST experience I could have hoped for during our trip as having her around other dogs has felt nearly impossible! Alexis emailed me pictures of Brooklyn and wrote me an email about how she was doing. I called again a few days later after having watched her each day play in the indoor and outdoor areas with the other dogs and was pleased to hear how well she was doing. The play area cameras allowed us to check in on her during play time and we also got to see the staff clean the area several times, which was reassuring. My only complaint (which may not even be a big deal for most if not booking "luxury" package) is that the pet cam in the "luxury" rooms is closer to the door, which doesn't allow you to see your dog if they are on their bed or towards the back of the room. We did catch Brooklyn a few times cooling off on the floor and when staff was picking her up/dropping her off at play times. Otherwise, everything else was great! If we had to leave Brooklyn outside of family's care again whether for a day or a week, we would choose this Best Friends Pet Hotel again. read more

Do not waste your time with this place. They have 1 groomer who fires clients for giving honest feedback. I specifically asked for my dog to no have his hair cut during winter months. I came back to pick him up to find that he was trimmed all over and shaved on his underside when it's 20 degrees out. I immediately contacted them only to.fond out that Ed fired my sweet boy as a client. Claiming it was his behavior. My dog was a sweetheart and wouldn't hurts a fly. There was also a counter person that witnessed my instruction to the groomer. Prior to leaving,I turned and asked if his pick-up would be earlier since he was not getting a cut. All being said, they terminated my account after I had been bringing him there for almost 2 years. These people are dishonest and pay no attention to your direction. Turns out, it was the best thing that could've happened because we found a wonderful groomer only mins away.from home. The place is immaculate, unlike Best Friends. My recommdation is for Morris Animal Inn in Warren. Incredibly friendly, honest and caring group of people. Keep away from Big Ed. He is not a good person. read more

I just had a horrible experience with Best Friends in Green brook, I was in Paris for a week, I called several times to check on my 10 year old Morkie Kai, I never got a call back. When I picked him up on 8/24/21 upon my return he was out of it, could barely bark and had severe diarrhea. I took him to the vet and he had lost 5 pounds and an upper respiratory infection...he was fine and fully vaccinated for everything before he was boarded there for the first time. I have called them and spoken to managers Christina and Ian ....no one can give me an explanation as to why none of this was noticed of addressed. My greatest concern is that I called, left a detailed message to check on him and no one ever called me back...Don't take your pet to Best Friends in Green brook, NJ! He is recuperating after being shot up on antibiotics and something for the severe diarrhea. I was sent home with more meds for him to take for 5 more days. When I called Best Friends, they were welcoming and were great with my dog and his needs. Extremely reasonable prices. Very nice facility. Lots of play time and really cool options. It's a shame, because when previous management was in place it was wonderful. When I gave birth to my son, we left our 2 dogs here for 3 nights and they absolutely loved it. We received photos, they looked happy and were clean when we picked them up. Unfortunately that was the only experience we had before management changed. How these people are in business I have no idea. We had a wedding to attend for a long weekend and left our dogs for 3 nights, when we picked them up they had no reaction to us. This is NOT normal as they are extremely affectionate, especially with my husband and I. They smelled horrible, and when we asked about the clean we paid for they said "yea, they're clean." Clearly they were not. We got home and they were SO THIRSTY. It was as if they hadn't drank anything the entire weekend. The diarrhea that followed is unlike anything I'd seen, and I'm kicking myself because I see other reviews stating the same. Had I known this, I wouldn't NEVER brought them back here!! They were sick for days and completely not themselves. We've had grooming appts cancelled 4 times due to "the groomer calling out" excuse me? How is this acceptable? Now I see it as a blessing in disguise knowing how "clean" they came back after their stay. STAE AWAY FROM THIS PLACE - STAFF IS RUDE AND CLEARLY DONT CARE ABOUT ANIMALS. THEY DO NOT ANSWER THE PHONE OR RETURN PHONE CALLS WHEN CALLING TO CHECK IN ON YOUR PET. They need completely new management and staff, or to shut down. We had been using Best Friends before they moved from North Plainfield to Greenbrook and before Covid. We were satisfied and felt like our animals were well cared for and the staff was professional. We brought our dogs and lizard in for a week at Labor Day. It's a fairly new building so we were instantly surprised by the smell. It hits as soon as you walk in. We had a issue getting the lizard set up-there was no thought of where to put him and the original had the wire for the lights for his cage going under an active door. We we ended up putting him in the laundry room so we were able to see how poorly organized and sloppy it is. My feeding directions were not followed and his lights were off when we picked him up. He's fine but did have diarrhea for a few days after. My dogs were a mess when we picked them up. Their bottoms were filthy even though we paid for a bath at the end. It's not clear if they got the bath and it was just done poorly or they were not bathed. Regardless we were able to see how filthy the dogs were allowed to get. In addition one of our dogs had a cut on his foot and was limping. I understand that things happen, but they should have told us about it so that we could watch. Either they did not notice or they did and didn't tell-either is disappointing. Finally all of the bedding we brought in to make the dogs more comfortable was covered in poop. We threw it away. This was a nice place. They used to provide pictures (too busy for that!?) and treat your pets like they were family. I believe they are understaffed and under qualified. I hope they are able to provide service at the old level. For now I will not use again. read more

I was very disappointed with the Boarding. I left my dog there and the room he was in was filthy. The staff seemed very nice and capable, but it was clear they were overwhelmed. I called from 9:30am until 4:30pm the next day to check on my dog- no call backs and someone finally answered at 4:30! They were rushed, said my dog was fine, etc. When I picked him up he had urine all over him- which was not a surprise since when I dropped him off, there was urine on the floor. I gave them this review and received an automated response that someone would be in touch and they were not. I didn't even really want to write this but I feel bad for others who would bring their dogs here. Check the rooms before you book. I was really upset that my dog had to spend two nights there, and not answering and probably not even taking him on his scheduled walks or anything else that I signed up for ruined my trip. I was very disappointed with the way our dog was taken care of. When we picked him up, he seemed really dazed and not even happy to see us, and when my son & I pet him, we got poop all over our hands. He was filthy, not only did he have poop under his chin, his white chest was yellow from urine. He had scrapes and scabs on both of his elbows, red marks all down his neck, and had kennel cough. It took him one week to get back to normal. The other thing that was extremely disappointing, was the fact that we dropped him off with four individual bags of food, one for each day he was boarded, and when we picked him up, we were given one bag of food back! He was not fed one day, and nobody was able to tell us why or what day he didn't eat. The staff seemed nice and friends, however, very inexperienced. It doesn't appear that there is a good communication system in place since nobody could tell us what happened on a daily basis with our dog. I honestly feel that our dog was put in his kennel the day we dropped him off, and stayed in there the entire four days he was there. This may be a good place for daycare, but I would not recommend this place for over night boarding. read more

I boarded our two cats here previously for a week and they seemed fine when we brought them home. I made another reservation for two nights and received an email to update my 'agreement', which I did. I got there to drop off the cats and the person working the front desk (younger female) told me they had no reservation for us. She then called her manager and spent longer than necessary on the phone. She then said she would be right back and went in the back for about 10 mins. I finally opened the door to the cat area and asked if they could take the cats because I can't stand there all day. She comes out and speaks to the 'other' manager via phone and is going on and on and on about how this could have happened. She finally hangs up and says their call center 'isn't very good' and I guess I must have spoken to them when making the reservation. Meanwhile I am standing there for at least 30 mins with no idea if they are taking the cats or not. Then she tells me they need another 30 minutes to clean the area where the cats are going. I asked her to pls hold the cats while she was cleaning as I needed to go. I love my animals, but this was ridiculous. She finally agreed and checked them in. Total fiasco and this employee needs more training. It was as if I just needed to wait until she sorted out a problem they or their call center created. read more

I have Always used Eddie, & have followed him for 20 years, when he originally worked at Petco. He is a Great Asset to Best Friends with his Kind & Gentle mannerism & approach both to me & my Pets. He has Meticulously groomed over the past 20 years, my 2 Shelties & now my Cavalier King Charles who is 2 years old (& wiggly). Chloe has never been to a Groomer, & she 'Aced' it with her giving a friendly Greeting behind the counter, & showed no fear when I picked her up. Now that we've moved very close to Best Friends we will definitely be making this our 'Go To' Groomer. We were very glad to meet up with Eddie again after loosing our Pet 3 years ago. I'm very excited with the upcoming opening of your new Facility in the Fall, which will be even closer for us. read more

I absolutely love this place!! I have 5 dogs, 17,7,6,3,3 all of various ages. I have used many places such as: Petsmart, Petco, and Ma&Paws. Let's just say I'm relieved that I found Best Friend's and met Eddy! He is more than wonderful. Now my girls (4 Shih-tzu's and my Pekingnese) actually enjoy getting cleaned up. It's a big relief from previous experiences at above places mentioned. Also, their staff is so friendly and you can really tell that they love our pets as if they were their own. I am writing this review in hopes that other Fur Parents don't have the same experience that my family had when Boarding our Dogs with them in August. We went on a Family Vacation & collectively had 7 of our Dogs stay with them for the Week (3 Separate Families). Each family (including myself) had a laundry list of negative experiences. Without going into too much detail, it was clear that our dogs care did not meet the "Luxury" Standard that is advertised & I would go as far to say they did not even meet an "acceptable" standard when taking on the responsibility of caring for a Furry Family Member. We did contact Management, who was mildly apologetic over email & expressed that they were "short staffed" & "working things through". When a family member responded back, no-one bothered to reply. I am extremely sensitive to businesses struggling due to the pandemic, but the experiences we had went beyond reasonable error. My suggestion is to wait until they've "worked things through" before entrusting your Pet with them for Boarding. read more

If I could I would give zero stars. I picked up my shitzu after 4 nights and he was covered in poop. They didn't get a chance to give him a bath yet so I did when I went home. His coat was covered from head to paws to private parts with old sticky poop. It had to be a least couple of days of feces. He smelled terrible. What's worst that he was afraid of us at home and he is still trying to adjust. We paid for a luxurious suite to see him on the camera and keep in touch. Camera points out on the door so you can't really see the condition of the room. For 3 days we were looking at general area cameras too and we couldn't find him. At first we thought he was hiding in the corners but now we think he was locked up all that time. I called them a few times and left a message no call back. My boy is just super friendly, lovable and minds his own business. It's like leaving your baby with a bad babysitter. read more

Fist off the staff was great, they loved JJ. He is a 5 month old Shih Tzu. This was out first time to board. I would prefer to have someone come to our house. The office and grooming area are old and filthy. I would think for the price they charge they could upgrade and remodel. We were never able to see him on a cam and we received only twice for the 8 days, pics of him. When we picked him up, we had paid for a bath. Our dog LOVES to go to doggy day camp. She gets to play with other dogs and I can check in on her on the live video stream. Ryan and Karen are always cuddling or playing with the dogs and you can tell they LOVE their job and all the pups. It gives me such peace of mind to know our pup is in such good hands while we are at work. Even though the place looks big it is very personable and we are always greeted with a smile and by name. They all love our dog and even planned a special birthday party for her :) Every moth they hand out a calendar with fun activities planned for each day and really make it fun and special for all the dogs. We've been bringing our pup to Best Friends North Plainfield for about a year now and have had nothing but great experiences. At first, we only utilized the boarding services and were very impressed. We tried the solo package first and then moved to the group play. In both cases, we felt that he was treated with the same amount of love and care that we show him at home. After some time, we decided to try the grooming services. We were a bit nervous because he can be weary of strangers. He ended up getting a great haircut and nothing but good grades on his report card! All in all, Best Friends is a very honest organization and is very up front and honest about all of your pet's visits. Plus, the webcams allow us to drop in anytime and see our little guy playing with his friends. If you want to feel secure that your pet is safe and happy while you're away, definitely go to Best Friends North Plainfield. read more

I have taken my dog here on three different occasions. I definitely will not be taking him back. The first time my dog stayed for one night. Everything seemed fine when I picked him up. I did notice that he seemed to have an odor. I inquired and was told that he had been playing outside. The second time I boarded him it was for 5 days. When I picked him up he was dirty and smelled. When I complained they took him to the back and "cleaned"him. He smelled even worse. I automatically took him to the groomer to get him a bath. I was told that he was dirty and his paws were yellow because he had to have been standing in his own urine for days. This last time I took him there was one person at the desk, whom was responsible for everything. He seemed aggravated and was very short with answers. My dog was there for two nigh. As soon as my dog was brought out I noticed he was wet, and seemed anxious to get away from the man. The man was Quick to tell me that my dog was wet because he had an "accident " He gave no explanation as to what happened. He just gave me my bill and left. This place is so unprofessional. Happy with the care that our dog is given when she is boarding. However, because she is a pit bull she isn't allowed to participate in stay and play with the other dogs in the past two years because of a policy change - this is even though she did stay and play with them for years without incident prior to two years ago and has no aggression or bite history. This facility touts itself as a resort type of place for your animal. We had to kennel our dog, and chose this place because all their advertising made it seem like they would take really good care of our little dog. We also scheduled him to have a bath and a haircut right before we picked him up. We thought he would be really well taken care of. Well, we found out after our non-refundable $100 deposit that the daily rate was basically for space in a kennel and some food every day. Anything extra, that they made to seem like it was included with the stay, was extra money. You want your dog to have a little exercise every day? $15 a day. Is your dog on any medication? $1 per dosage. Do you want your dog to have any biscuits? $3 a day. Also, they're only allowed two toys. My dog doesn't play with toys, so I sent rawhides. They were returned back to us, he never got them. They considered them treats, and only gave him the biscuits we sent. I was surprised he actually got those. If you wanted your dog petted and cuddled, it was also extra. This place is really great at telling you what you want to hear, but how can you know what is going on? You get nickle and dimed for everything. My dog went in weighing 25 lbs, he came home and was three pounds less. For a fit, healthy, well-exercised dog-- well, three pounds on a little dog is a HUGE amount lost. His ribs and spine were really protruding. I called them every day to see how my dog was doing, and they told me he was "Fine, a little distrustful with certain members of the staff, and leaving just a little food behind. But otherwise he's doing fine." Oh, and that bath and haircut he was supposed to have? Well, he got the bath, but no haircut. But guess what? We were charged for the haircut!! And they wouldn't refund the money for the haircut he never got, saying that the itemization on the bill was just wrong, they charge $40 for a bath. $40 for a bath?!? When it costs $60 for a bath, haircut, nails trimmed, etc... at PetCo?? They said he didn't get a haircut because he was "upset". Then how did he get a bath? And believe me, it's not like he's never been groomed professionally before. I bet there are maybe two or three people at Best Friends in North Plainfield who actually care about the animal's well being. I got the impression that most people over there hate their job. And subsequently, the animals being boarded there suffer. I sent in the little postcard they gave us to rate them, and said I would never take him back there again. I've received two call from the manager to try and retain me as a customer. Yeah right, pal! My dog and wallet have suffered enough already. read more

Okay this place is terrible, if we wanted to keep our dogs in time out and in a cage the majority of the day we'd just leave them home. You can clearly see it on the cameras dogs are being pulled roughly by the collar and put in time outs for hours at a time just because the trainer on site "forgets". I'm sorry we don't pay that much money for our dogs to be abused. Definitely will be reporting this location and working to get it shut down because it's not right. We got a puppy in December and started to work with Kim from Best Friends immediately. Kim is excellent. She helped us become better at understanding our dog and set her up for success. Our dog was house trained very quickly and learned some important commands that made being a new pet owner much more manageable. We have also boarded our dog there and taken the group class and have been very happy with the experience. read more

He also came back very scared and sad. They dont pick up the phone when you want to check on your pet. I gave my dog in good conditions and came back in a terrible condition. We used Best Friends for a long time and felt the nickel and dime expenses were worth it. Our dogs seemed happy when we picked them up and jumped and ran in on each visit. Then, one time they had an outbreak of kennel cough when our dog was supposed to be boarded. They informed us itwould be "board at your own risk!" they would not even assume any responsibility for added medical expenses. We cancelled the reservation and have never gone back.
