We had a second floor, lake view, 2 queen bed room. The covered patio was nice to go out and look at the birds visiting the lake. An eagle flew in, 2 mute swans, ducks, and other birds. We enjoyed the patio. The breakfast was just ok. There was a small but editable selection and it was clean. There is an indoor pool but we didn't use it. Stayed here over three nights at the end of December. The rates were reasonable, the beds were comfortable, the pool was warm, and the shower was awesome. I'd definitely stay here again. If you're looking for something negative, the breakfast was marginal, and that's being generous. There wasn't much of it, what was available was not high quality, and once it's gone they don't replenish. So, I'd recommend getting to breakfast early and not setting your standard very high. But that being said, the rest of the stay was pretty great. I'm guessing they don't do a tremendous amount of business this time of year, and they appear to be working with a skeleton crew. But for me that was the draw. I got to swim each morning by myself and there certainly wasn't any parties going on keeping me up at night. The few people they did have working here were super helpful and kind. Best Westerns are typically hit or miss. They are either a Best Western or a Worst Western. This one would lean hit. It's not new, and like me in many ways it is showing its age. But who cares? I had a good stay and I'd certainly recommend. read more

Good Value Hotel in the Dunes Area. I decided to give this Best Western a try during a recent business visit to the area. Being from Canada, I had booked an early Pre-Flight PCR test in nearby Valparaiso for the next day and wanted to be close to the lab and close to my next business visit later in the morning. I checked Tripadvisor and saw that this hotel had relatively good reviews and decided to book it through the Best Western Website. Low and behold the rates were very good that night and so I booked it. Upon arrival, the parking lot had ample parking and I was able to park close to the entrance. I checked in and a very friendly person at the front desk offered me a Lakeside room, so I took it. The front lobby and the rest of the hotel is a bit dated and could use an upgrade, but overall it was clean and inviting. My room was located on the second floor and had a balcony overlooking Chubb Lake, a small natural lake behind the hotel. The room was rather large and looked larger due to the room being sparsely furnished. It had a bed, a tv cabinet/dresser, a desk and a small couch beside the bed. The room was large enough to roll out a yoga mat or have small children play in the room. The TV cabinet/dresser contained a TV, microwave and a mini-fridge. The bed was newer, clean and was very comfortable. The bathroom was spotless and very clean. The room lacked the modern touches of USB ports and multiple outlets, but connection to the wifi was easy and the wifi signal was strong. I was able to connect through a corporate VPN and stream Netflix while on a WhatsApp with family. The Fitness Center is located on the main floor. The machines inside are older and smoe weren't even plugged in. Only the treadmill was working durung my visit. I had to wait for another person to finish using it, and had to wipe it down my self. The TV either A. didn't work or B. wasn't pludded in. The Univiersal was an older machine, lacking attachements, but did the job. This is not a state of the art fitness center but okay for one or two nights. Often when I'm travelling and the hotels fitness center is subpar, I drop into a local crossfit or gym for a good workout. Hopefully sometime in the future they upgrade their fitness center and equipment. There is a nice view of the lake from the blacony. The balcony itself wasn't very big, but is was okay for someone just catch a nice view of the lake. Watch out for the spiderwebs on the balcony as I had a few during my stay, with spiders in them. In the morning they were handing out breakfast burritos and takeaway bags as the dining was closed due to COVID-19 restrictions. My only disppointment was when I checked out no one was there to give me a burrito. I had to go so I can't comment on breakfast. Overall this a good value hotel, with a great location as it is close to the dunes and highways. The hotel is a bit dated and could use a modernizing to capture more business travellers, and to accommodate travellers with smart phones and tablets. read more

There is no best in this best western. Starting with the furniture in the lobby which is filthy. The check in process was very slow as they don't let anyone check- in early. So everyone is there at 3. The room is ok but the drapes had holes and there was a odor. Might be from the cleaning products. Overall run down. Lastly no real security. We can back at 9:30pm. There was no one at the desk and it was clear anyone could roam the hotel freely. We wouldn't stay here again. read more

This is not like other Best Western locations, management is blind to the things that don't cost anything to do but make the difference such as, ignoring the spectacular lake and the hotels deck, there's no tables outside for the Cafe. Booked a hot tub suite, other than a red wine stain on the floor everything seemed okay. The main problem is that our room for $162 a night was ground floor and backed onto the parking lot. We heard some commotion outside and saw a few people standing around a bed of a truck wearing full camouflage and appeared to be putting meat bags. Now given the recent breech at the US Capitol, my wife did not feel safe and we decided to leave and stay somewhere else. I'm sure it was just hunters splitting a deer or something but again not something that you want right outside the sliding door to your room. If you stay here I would give the ground floor rooms that have sliding doors onto the parking lot a miss. If they are full then similar accommodations are available at the other hotel on the lake. Why did we leave and not complain? It is not our job to be the "world police". I felt that my wife was maybe being a bit over sensitive but I respect her feelings and so wanted to fix everything in the least bothersome and combative way. I'm also not sure switching rooms at that point would have made her feel any more safe and relaxed. I think moving location was the best choice. Probably not for my wallet but you can't put a price on feeling safe. I would say that since the parking lot is somewhat secluded in portion, security cameras be installed to detect unusual activity so that the hotel can investigate unusual goings-on. Just in addition this was the first hotel I have stayed at that seemed unable to assign British Airways Avios as my chosen reward at the front desk. I was directed to call the 1-800 number and talk to customer service that I will never get around to. British Airways Executive Club is shown as a Best Western partner on the Best Western website. My mom, daughter, and myself stayed for two nights. We had trouble with an early check in, but were able to take my daughter swimming while we waited for our room. Clean beds, strange smell to the room, walk out screen door was off the track and janky, bathroom sink wouldn't drain (so I removed the drain plug which was the problem - and it was gross). I'm not one to complain to staff, but there were issues. Nothing so massive to push me to complain, but my guess is others wouldn't be so forgiving. The breakfast was fine. I'm not a fan of what I assume were powdered eggs, but they were fine with the supplied hot sauce and sausage links. The coffee was hot and strong, everything else was just fine. First of all it is difficult to find a decent affordable hotel in Northwest Indiana. We were fortunate to stay here for one night. Positives are easy on and off the freeway, friendly staff, good customer service. The attendant working the breakfast room did a great job. She helped a dad with young children figure out the always confusing for first time users waffle maker. Negatives would be the value. 141 dollars total was about 30 dollars to high. Curtains covering windows were covered in black mold. Mold was throughout the bathroom. Human waste stains running down door hinges. This was the worst hotel stay experience I have ever had. Zero stars, completely and utterly disgusted and disappointed with the entire brand of Best Western from my experience here. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted with a rude receptionist who was not wearing a mask in the middle of a pandemic, even though there was a sign in the entrance of the lobby that stated that everyone was required to wear a mask. The receptionist seemed like she didn't want to be there, I felt very unwelcome. As soon as I walked in to my hotel room, I was greeted with a musty smell from the old and very outdated room. The carpet was absolutely filthy. The bathroom was definitely not cleaned, as the floor was dirty, a towel was stained with who knows what, and there was hair in the bathtub. The entire room was dusty and not sanitized. To top it off, the tv didn't work and neither did the remote. When I made the receptionist, whom I later found out was the only staff member working (in charge of reception and housekeeping) aware about my unhappiness with my room, she said that she could switch me to a room that she herself could clean under half an hour, a soon as the current guest checked out. I declined the terrible offer and asked to have the towels replaced and bathroom cleaned. Fine. The only staff member came in a while later to clean. While she were cleaning, we noticed there was a fly in the room and made her aware of this concern. She completely dismissed this and offered to bring us disinfectant wipes. The "disinfectant wipes" she brought us were just wet paper towels in a ziplock baggie. I asked her if could talk to the manager and she said there was no one else working right now except her. I had originally planned my stay there for three nights, but after my first night's experience, I just wanted to get as far away from there as possible and cancelled the rest of my stay there. The manager was unapologetic, even after I showed him pictures of the flies and the filth in the room. This hotel is absolutely disgusting and the service was completely unacceptable. Overall, this hotel was extremely disappointing and left me with an overall bad impression of the entire town of Chesterton. I will never stay at another Best Western owned hotel again. read more

Amanda the manager is so greedy that she refused to refund the $30 dollars (30000 BW points). the more I talked to her the worst she was. said this review cost her money even if I changed it. Tried to explain I am 65 disabled and can not drive at night, and would ever leave somewhere at night. In fact I got stuck in a yard trying to see my relatives driveway. and she said well you do not know my age. On the internet, it seems very appealing with the lake scenic view. In person, it's mediocre at best. The room had a very musky smell to it.. the beds were hard.. the pillows were not firm at all. The rooms could use some TLC and air fresheners. The beds were hard, but I was ok with that. The view of the small lake was nice. This hotel was fine for a few nights. We are locals that ended up here after a horrible storm sent a tree thru our house. Whole repairs were made we stayed at this hotel & were very happy with its accommodations. It's pretty and peaceful. The birds, geese, & swans just make the surroundings seem further away even though you are right in town. There's also an indoor pool. Your are close to several restaurants & minutes from Lake Michigan. Hop on the freeway & head into Chicago if you want some city fun. I would give it 5 stars, but the price was higher than I thought it should be. We always have out of town guests stay here, & they are very happy there. read more

This place is better then the Crown Plaza we stayed at in Springfield IL. Pleasant staff, big bathroom, big room, hot breakfast ( although we slept to late for it), decent tv, indoor pool, free wifi (that runs pretty decently) and comfy bed. We got a great price on hotwire and I'm glad its the "secret" hotel. Does it have areas to improve? Of course, but they are in the process of remodeling. It has great location near many resturants ( I reccomend Gelsosimo's) and highways in any direction. I really love how the have pictures of dunes, celebrating that is located very near to Lake Michigan. I would definately stay there again! I'm from here so the chances of that happening are pretty good. read more

Recently there with my family and baby for Labor Day Weekend. Went to the bathroom at 2am, turned the lights on and see several cockroaches by the coffee maker. Was able to catch one and disposed in the trash. During check out, explained the incident with the PROPERTY MANAGER, Amanda, and she quickly said it was not a cockroach after showing her the photo I took. I asked her to take us back to our room and pick the pest out of the trash and confirm. She proceeds to evaluate it and even touched it with her bare fingers and said it was NOT a cockroach. I then requested that we get a second opinion from another staff member (was hoping for another manager) for confirmation and sure enough it was settled as the pest being a cockroach. I also let her know that there's a hole underneath the sink by the pipe against the wall and could be an outlet for these pests. She first denies it was a cockroach. Asks if I had photos. I show her the photo and immediately denies. Tells me that I should've called management right away. (We have a 15month old baby and to wake the baby up was not an option.) Still denies after physically evaluating the roach with her fingers. Doesn't wash her hands and goes on typing and handling front desk activities. Offers a 15% discount??? Seriously? I was puzzled and just asked her to do whatever it was to make the situation right in order for us to enjoy the rest of our day. read more

The Price was Good but the Pool was COLD , my 12yr old son got approached by Drunk girls to go back to there room & Party!?!. Stayed January 2015, traveled on business I understand it was blowing snow and very cold, however, being from this area the walks to separate entrances and the main entrance should have been thoroughly cleaned and salted, they were NOT. My walks and drive are always cleaned and salted at home, I expect the same when I'm staying at a hotel. Get your game face on and do your job. Each evening of our stay (4 times) upon returning we had to go to the front desk to get our key card reset because it wasn't working. One clerk told me they were frozen but after the reset I tried again and it worked. Further, another clerk asked me if I was staying one night, she didn't bother to check when resetting the card so I'm presuming the cards are set for the number of days stay. I had to ask for additional toilet paper, the clerk acted as though I ask for him to loan me some money. It took him at least 5 full minutes to get the item as him he came back with 1 roll. I didn't know rationing was on. It's our belief previous guests to our room enjoyed popcorn. How nice! Too bad the cleaning folks couldn't cozy up the vacuum to the sofa and bed to pick it all up. YUCK! When we find uncleanliness we're hesitant to use other amenities such as the pool, hot tub or steam room so we didn't. Upon checking in the clerks during the day were friendly and helpful, the problems were with the evening clerks who were not very friendly and seemed to drudge their work. Find something different, don't let your unhappiness shine through to paying guests. We were also surprised there was no elevator, even with only 2 floors. Carrying luggage up and down was not fun. And......please management, don't come back with a lame cursory apology like the politicians do when they get cause with an ethics problem, just correct the issues. Room Tip: If you don't mind carrying your bags up stairs you're all good. I explained the key card situation in detail and the utility/storage room was 30-40 feet from the front desk, no one else was seeking assistance and I followed the desk clerk to the location. Here is what Neil wrote: "Thank you for taking the time to leave us your thoughts about our property. I understand that you would rather not hear any apologies from us, but please accept my apology. I do not ration the toilet paper or any other of our amenities on our property. The only reason it took the clerk to bring you the toilet paper so long is for the reason that our housekeeping room is located far away from our front desk area. As for your key card try to understand that they do demagnetize extremely easy as a cell phone or any electronic device can cause them to be demagnetize. As there is no excuse for parking lot to be unkempt we do try our hardest to keep up with it. My staff and I thank you and we look forward to your next visit. " Next visit? This is what I mentioned in the end of my original review but Neil insisted on following through and really thinks we would return. I told the front desk and they took care of it They used a fan to dry whatever they did. The fan was filthy, which was left in the room. Then when I went to grab one of the extra blankets it smelled like body odor. Lastly there were 3 Wolf Spiders in my room. When I called the desk to ask for insect repellent the girl who answered the phone said she'll look but she thinks they're out but she would let me know. I never heard from her again. read more

I am not one to throw out a 1 star, negative review just for the heck of it. In this case, I really wish that instead of a "one star" option, there was a "oh hell no" option, because that would be more appropriate for this house of horrors. I am not exaggerating. This hotel is the worst I have ever booked, and I have stayed in a lot of different places -- all over the place, all price ranges. The photos on the website are a complete misrepresentation of the property, and management knows it... and for that, and because I would like to save others from what we had to deal with, I am giving this one star review. Before we even stepped foot in the lobby, we had misgivings. The property is sandwiched tightly between a highway, a strip mall parking lot (that you need to drive through to find the place), and the "lake" which is nothing more than a stagnant bog. Still, trying to stay positive and upbeat, we went through with the check in process. How bad could it be? How much will we really be in the room, anyway? The answer? It can be really, really bad... so bad that you don't even want to sit down, much less get in between the sheets and rest your head on the pillows. The "lake view room with jacuzzi and fireplace" that we booked was a joke. The "king" bed was NOT a King sized bed-- more like queen or full. The fireplace was merely an add on box stuck against the wall -- no mantle or decorations -- just a random box. The jacuzzi looked clean and okay, but based upon what I saw in the bathroom and the rest of the room, you couldn't pay me to get into it -- hello, strangers skin bit soup. The room itself smelled, and so filthy I didn't want to sit down or let go of my bags. Dust was floating everywhere, the carpets were stained and looked like they hadn't been washed in years. The furniture looked like something they picked off the end of someones driveway. The lake... again - stagnant bog, and the patio was actually just a sloping bed of crushed gravel littered with a bunch of crap (which, when we complained to clerk, we were told was "goose, not dog" --- as if that made it okay). There was a pipe sticking out of the ground about 10 feet away from the door, and the view was the other half of this sad property, punctuated by a McDonalds sign. If there was "waterfowl" (as I read in another probably fake review) I didn't see or hear any. The only evidence of any living thing were the turds just outside our door. It was the most depressing hotel room I have ever seen. There was NO WAY I was going to give the management of this hotel $150 to stay here. We did not even stay in the room for 5 minutes... turned right around and demanded our $$ back. We were able to get the charges taken off our credit card, but not without some struggles with the front desk clerk and management. Initially, the clerk said, "sorry, there is not a manager here, and you are within 24 hours. No cancellations." After some fuss and bother from us, the clerk called the manager ("Angel") who said the best he could do was a discount and to move us to a different room. Um... nope - pretty sure there is not a room here that I will stay in. Finally, we were able to speak with the manager directly, and he quickly agreed to not charge us and let us check out. We ended up staying in Valpo at the Holiday Inn Express, which was nice, spotless, and comfy. I just do not get how there are positive reviews of this place... half of them have got to be fake. Incidentally, I have read responses to other negative reviews of this place (on other sites) from management. Some of them dated back to 2009 - same issues. I sure wish I had seen them before wasting my time booking. Despite management responses to other reviewers regarding education in cleaning rooms, keeping grounds and lake clean, etc etc etc... it is clear that this is just lip service. They are making no effort to make lasting changes, and are investing the bare minimum in this property. Do not waste your money... there is no value here. Luckily, it was just the two of us... imagine driving all night with a car load of kids, only to arrive and discover this hole? Beware, and keep looking. This is not a good place to stay. **Update: I submitted a review for this hotel on another travel site, and the general manager posted a response. He addressed the location and grounds and made valid points that these were things beyond their control. He made absolutely no mention of the things that were in their control: cleanliness, odor, furnishings, etc. He merely attempted to discount my review by "reminding" me that we did not actually stay or pay for this place in the end (why would we?? it was disgusting and not worth $40/night, much less $150), and by stating that my husband "screamed" at employees (quite an exaggeration - terse and persistent - yes, screamed - no). Seemed like the kind of hotel one rents by the hour. Quite sleazy, dirty, and unbecoming. Train horns kept us awake at nigh, blaring every 30 minutes very loud. Very much a truckers stop. read more

I spoke to the corp office and what a waste of time, they do nothing at all. I was charged the full price and never contracted by the general manager or anyone else. Please stay away from this hotel because they made a mistake in the booking for my only child and my son in law they ruined what was to be a very special day. This was it the only wedding for us. I couldn't even check out and change hotels without being charged. Shame on them!!!! read more

If you want a urine soaked mattress, sheets with holes and stains, food crumbs and even a used straw in your bed, dirty phone, urine and pubic hairs on the toilet, only to be offered a new set of sheets that I could put on myself then this is your place! the set of sheets came without even new pillow cases and no new mattress protector so I called and asked for a new mattress protector and was told I got a line down here I'll get to it when I can. I then asked for a refund and was told that fine. But when the refund came it was only for the second night. the first night was still charged even though we were told we would get the refund. I called and spoke with a manager who said the general manager was not willing to refund the first night nor was he/she willing to speak with me because they were not given the opportunity to give us another room. WE WERE NOT EVEN OFFERED ANOTHER ROOM! Not only does this company not live up to their advertised high cleaning standards they do not have good customer service and pretty much robbed us the first night stay. After calling corporate were offered half of the charges before taxes for that first night or points for another night stay at any best western. After this experience I do not want to ever stay at a best western again! read more

As part of my Cross Country adventure this year. I stayed at many different hotels on my way. This hotel had a ski resort type feel to it. The rooms are pretty big and are kept clean. The beds feel great and you can get a good night sleep. The only downside is that it is two stories and there is NO elevator. The stairs to me felt a bit flimsy but otherwise was great. The continental breakfast was pretty big from Sausage to Cereal. If I am ever in the area again I would go here ! read more

So when my grandpa came into town he got a room here and it ended up being on the second floor. It turns out they don't have an elevator so he stumbled when he was coming down the stairs and almost fell. They really need an elevator for there guests. read more
