    Morning View

Good Value Hotel in the Dunes Area. I decided to give this Best Western a try during a recent business visit to the area. Being from Canada, I had booked an early Pre-Flight PCR test in nearby Valparaiso for the next day and wanted to be close to the lab and close to my next business visit later in the morning. I checked Tripadvisor and saw that this hotel had relatively good reviews and decided to book it through the Best Western Website. Low and behold the rates were very good that night and so I booked it. Upon arrival, the parking lot had ample parking and I was able to park close to the entrance. I checked in and a very friendly person at the front desk offered me a Lakeside room, so I took it. The front lobby and the rest of the hotel is a bit dated and could use an upgrade, but overall it was clean and inviting. My room was located on the second floor and had a balcony overlooking Chubb Lake, a small natural lake behind the hotel. The room was rather large and looked larger due to the room being sparsely furnished. It had a bed, a tv cabinet/dresser, a desk and a small couch beside the bed. The room was large enough to roll out a yoga mat or have small children play in the room. The TV cabinet/dresser contained a TV, microwave and a mini-fridge. The bed was newer, clean and was very comfortable. The bathroom was spotless and very clean. The room lacked the modern touches of USB ports and multiple outlets, but connection to the wifi was easy and the wifi signal was strong. I was able to connect through a corporate VPN and stream Netflix while on a WhatsApp with family. The Fitness Center is located on the main floor. The machines inside are older and smoe weren't even plugged in. Only the treadmill was working durung my visit. I had to wait for another person to finish using it, and had to wipe it down my self. The TV either A. didn't work or B. wasn't pludded in. The Univiersal was an older machine, lacking attachements, but did the job. This is not a state of the art fitness center but okay for one or two nights. Often when I'm travelling and the hotels fitness center is subpar, I drop into a local crossfit or gym for a good workout. Hopefully sometime in the future they upgrade their fitness center and equipment. There is a nice view of the lake from the blacony. The balcony itself wasn't very big, but is was okay for someone just catch a nice view of the lake. Watch out for the spiderwebs on the balcony as I had a few during my stay, with spiders in them. In the morning they were handing out breakfast burritos and takeaway bags as the dining was closed due to COVID-19 restrictions. My only disppointment was when I checked out no one was there to give me a burrito. I had to go so I can't comment on breakfast. Overall this a good value hotel, with a great location as it is close to the dunes and highways. The hotel is a bit dated and could use a modernizing to capture more business travellers, and to accommodate travellers with smart phones and tablets.

This is a very unique hotel in a World of cookie cutter properties. Some of the rooms have a lake view, small lake. The pool and breakfast were GREAT, there is a sauna. It looks like they are renovating the hot tub area. The balcony in the room would be GREAT in the warm weather.

The lake view was a bit swampier than I expected.

My mom, daughter, and myself stayed for two nights. We had trouble with an early check in, but were able to take my daughter swimming while we waited for our room. Clean beds, strange smell to the room, walk out screen door was off the track and janky, bathroom sink wouldn't drain (so I removed the drain plug which was the problem - and it was gross). I'm not one to complain to staff, but there were issues. Nothing so massive to push me to complain, but my guess is others wouldn't be so forgiving. The breakfast was fine. I'm not a fan of what I assume were powdered eggs, but they were fine with the supplied hot sauce and sausage links. The coffee was hot and strong, everything else was just fine. I'd like to not return to this hotel is the long story short.

    Filthy, run down.

Absolutely disgusting. I can't even exaggerate the filth if I tried. Room smelled of urine and mold. It was so bad that we had to leave after just a few hours. Curtains covering windows were covered in black mold. Mold was throughout the bathroom. Human waste stains running down door hinges. What is advertised as a beautiful lake looked like a sewage run off cesspool. Train horns blast at all hours. Left after a few hours due to respiratory issues from mold, and manager refused to provide a refund.

The shower backed up and it was disgusting. Could not take a shower. The bathroom door would not close. It was generally not very clean.

This inn has key-less doors, so make sure you memorize your codes for both the front door and your room. The front door needs to be locked manually, and your room door stay locked, so burn those numbers into memory or on the mobile phone you have with you. I stayed at the Porter Queen room - nice wood floors, has an A/C unit & heat for supplemental cooling/heating, bed is nice and comfortable without bugs or it being too hard or soft, mini-kitchen was nice for warming up leftovers or what nots, bathroom was basic and did the job nicely - no shampoo or conditioner, but a bar of soap is provided. Towels were provided in decent abundance. Room is nice, albeit a bit spartan. Note that I did the reservation via online, but had to talk to the owner/administrator. I forgot her name, but she was pleasant, and got it paid via credit card over the phone without issue. No one is staffed at the house, and is all dealt with "remotely" - but this works well as I arrived to the house clean, the email instructions very clear, and the room ready. Nearest restaurant or stores are about 5 minutes away if you want food, sundries, etc. I brought leftovers from lunch and that did me fine for the rest of the night. No free breakfast or what nots, unless if you arranged to purchase a snacking "package" with your reservation. Parking for 4-5 vehicles are available in front of the house, cannot comment on the lot a block away. Definitely a good place for some piece of quiet, isolation, or a 2-4 days stay for a couple. No one was apparently there during my stay, so cannot comment if the walls are too thin or if house rules are respected or not. Mobile signals are decent for Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile, so no problems with your calls or mobile web browsing. Anyone using the antiquated WiMaxx (Clear & Sprint) will NOT have coverage. Onsite Wifi is available and free, though I could not connect to it for whatever reason. Will come back again! (and sorry for the tl;dr)

The Duneswalk Inn has the charm of a B&B with the privacy of a hotel…read more Me and my husband booked two nights during the week in August for a romantic getaway. I was a little reluctant to stay at a historic mansion, thinking that "historic" might actually mean "run down." That was not the case here at all. The interior is classic, yet modern. We stayed in the Queen Porter Room and it was lovely, quaint and well designed. Our bed was comfortable, and clean. We loved the kitchenette, equipped with a fridge, microwave, toaster, coffee maker and sink. I love that the proprietors send you a code for the front door and the room door ahead of your stay so you don't have to bother with checking in at a front desk. It really made us feel like we were guests at a country home rather than just customers checking into a hotel. The only downsides: paper thin walls and spotty wireless. We could only get reception in the lounge area on the second floor, but we weren't spending a lot of time online anyway. On our second night there were quite a lot of children running around and screaming. So while it's perfect for a romantic getaway, keep in mind that a lot of families are renting rooms in the summer. Other than that, we loved it! We definitely plan on staying here if we visit again.

Spring House Inn - Pool is very dangerous, blue dye in the water and when the kids dive down you cannot see them with the additional overhead lighting glare.

Breakfast had waffles, bagels, cereal, and I believe eggs. The waffles were always good. I enjoyed the pool several times. I absolutely loved relaxing in the room spa tub after long days of hiking in the chilly air. Each room also had a small balcony on the floor I was on. The only downside is the walls are quite thin. I was privy to an entire argument (while I was trying to nap) as well as the ensuing "make up". Needless to say, my nap ended pretty quick and I headed back out to explore more of the area. Overall, the hotel was lovely and I would stay here again.

Breakfast had the usual hotel breakfast options (with better eggs) but ran out of milk and hot water wasn't working for the instant oatmeal. The halls and common areas were comfortable but our room was very humid and smelled wet despite the a/c running and fan on. Fairly outdated and furniture and fixtures are pretty beat up. Beds were comfortable but pillows were lumpy. Pool and sauna were standard hotel experience. It's fairly charming despite the negatives. This place kind of has a monopoly on places to stay near the dunes so the price is high - definitely not comparable with the experience but options are limited. Would probably still stay here again.
