STAY AWAY! This is by far the worst hotel I have ever had the unfortunate luck of staying at. We didn't have a lot of options because everything was sold out and it was very late. We checked in and we were told it was the last room. That wasn't true. We went up the disgusting stairs trying not to touch the horribly dirty walls. Once getting to the door (room 209) the handle is broken and you have to hold the handle up to get the key to work. You also have to make sure the handle is pulled up on the inside too or the door won't lock and the wind will blow the door open. Nothing was mentioned about this. Once opening the door you are hit in the face with the worst combination of smoke (smoke free room), alley urine, mold, and rotting food. Take one step in and youre greeted with a wall next to a sink COVERED in actual boogers with nose hair and some even had blood in them. They must have either been picking hard or had some sort of sinus issues. The wall next to the sink wasn't the only place they decorated with their nose buddies, we even found them on the headboard and above the headboard on the wall. No problem, we can try and ignore the bodily fluid decor. Went to slide the curtains apart to open the window so that we could try and air out some of the stench, only to be stabbed by safety pins thats someone kindly set up to surprise the next victims of room 209. Figured out how to avoid the traps and went to open the AC door to get some air moving and the lid fell off. Okay. By this time we needed a break and started to put our cold drinks and morning cold coffee in the mini-fridge only to be greeted by the debris of other food and the carcasses of an entire extended family of insects. By this time we were defeated but room 209 wasn't done with us. The microwave had an entire meal that could have been scrapped off the top and fed to our dog if we hated him. Which we don't, so we left it for the next guest to potentially consume. The bathroom was a story all on its own. An upstanding citizen in Indiana really loved their baths with a cigarette (remember, smoke free room) says the perfect burn marks all over the top of the tub. They also had long black hair says the walls of the shower and short, black, curly pubic hair says the shower, bathroom floor and toilet. I'd like to think it was one person but I'm leaning on the idea that all of those gifts were left by multiple stays. The dressers were the best part in my opinion. My husband and I got to play a game we called "guess that substance". Each drawer had a new guess! Neither one of us claimed to be a winner because neither one of us had a freaking clue what some of it was. They really stumped us! We decided to go back down to the sketchy parking lot next to the run down and over grown Arbys, to get our dogs blankets to lay on and cover ourselves with because as much as we loved the suprises we didn't want to bring any of them home with us. The neatly made beds hid the dark sand like substance that was resting in between the sheets. The springs poking through the beds made it even more of an adventure because we had to come up with unique sleeping positions to avoid the worst ones. After having the worst night with thoughts of boogers falling on us, the door opening on its own, what bug may crawl out of this 80's mattress?, or will I make it out of this hotel without an infectious disease, I went to check out and let the lady know the condition of the room. I explained to her and showed her pictures. She had no response, not even a grunt. I asked if she had heard me and her response was "I dont know what to say. It's a hotel". I didn't ask for a refund, I didn't ask for a discount, I didn't even ask for directions to the nearest hospital for a battery of tests. I simply wanted her to know. So if your in Indiana and want an adventure...for just $160 a night you can stay in room 209. I recommend a hazmat suit but you decide on your own level of adventure and risk. Oh and no internet by the way.

Inn parking lot, satisfied customer and there's a great choice of restaurants in close proximity. Got my ice coffee and junk food!

Stayed an overnight on Wednesday, May 20th. Its fairly isolated from the light pollution and noise…read morefrom the mid to big city congestion one would have to face when staying for an overnight or two, so its fairly silent, aside from an occasional car or truck passing by and a freight train - almost too eerie for my taste. This inn has key-less doors, so make sure you memorize your codes for both the front door and your room. The front door needs to be locked manually, and your room door stay locked, so burn those numbers into memory or on the mobile phone you have with you. I stayed at the Porter Queen room - nice wood floors, has an A/C unit & heat for supplemental cooling/heating, bed is nice and comfortable without bugs or it being too hard or soft, mini-kitchen was nice for warming up leftovers or what nots, bathroom was basic and did the job nicely - no shampoo or conditioner, but a bar of soap is provided. Towels were provided in decent abundance. Room is nice, albeit a bit spartan. Note that I did the reservation via online, but had to talk to the owner/administrator. I forgot her name, but she was pleasant, and got it paid via credit card over the phone without issue. No one is staffed at the house, and is all dealt with "remotely" - but this works well as I arrived to the house clean, the email instructions very clear, and the room ready. Nearest restaurant or stores are about 5 minutes away if you want food, sundries, etc. I brought leftovers from lunch and that did me fine for the rest of the night. No free breakfast or what nots, unless if you arranged to purchase a snacking "package" with your reservation. Parking for 4-5 vehicles are available in front of the house, cannot comment on the lot a block away. Definitely a good place for some piece of quiet, isolation, or a 2-4 days stay for a couple. No one was apparently there during my stay, so cannot comment if the walls are too thin or if house rules are respected or not. Mobile signals are decent for Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile, so no problems with your calls or mobile web browsing. Anyone using the antiquated WiMaxx (Clear & Sprint) will NOT have coverage. Onsite Wifi is available and free, though I could not connect to it for whatever reason. Will come back again! (and sorry for the tl;dr)

I was a little reluctant to stay at a historic mansion, thinking that "historic" might actually mean "run down." That was not the case here at all. The interior is classic, yet modern. We stayed in the Queen Porter Room and it was lovely, quaint and well designed. Our bed was comfortable, and clean. We loved the kitchenette, equipped with a fridge, microwave, toaster, coffee maker and sink. I love that the proprietors send you a code for the front door and the room door ahead of your stay so you don't have to bother with checking in at a front desk. It really made us feel like we were guests at a country home rather than just customers checking into a hotel. The only downsides: paper thin walls and spotty wireless. We could only get reception in the lounge area on the second floor, but we weren't spending a lot of time online anyway. On our second night there were quite a lot of children running around and screaming. So while it's perfect for a romantic getaway, keep in mind that a lot of families are renting rooms in the summer. Other than that, we loved it! We definitely plan on staying here if we visit again.

If you're looking for something negative, the breakfast was marginal, and that's being generous. There wasn't much of it, what was available was not high quality, and once it's gone they don't replenish. So, I'd recommend getting to breakfast early and not setting your standard very high. But that being said, the rest of the stay was pretty great. I'm guessing they don't do a tremendous amount of business this time of year, and they appear to be working with a skeleton crew. But for me that was the draw. I got to swim each morning by myself and there certainly wasn't any parties going on keeping me up at night. The few people they did have working here were super helpful and kind. Best Westerns are typically hit or miss. They are either a Best Western or a Worst Western. This one would lean hit. It's not new, and like me in many ways it is showing its age. But who cares? I had a good stay and I'd certainly recommend.

Spring House Inn - Pool is very dangerous, blue dye in the water and when the kids dive down you cannot see them with the additional overhead lighting glare.

Breakfast had waffles, bagels, cereal, and I believe eggs. The waffles were always good. I enjoyed the pool several times. I absolutely loved relaxing in the room spa tub after long days of hiking in the chilly air. Each room also had a small balcony on the floor I was on. The only downside is the walls are quite thin. I was privy to an entire argument (while I was trying to nap) as well as the ensuing "make up". Needless to say, my nap ended pretty quick and I headed back out to explore more of the area. Overall, the hotel was lovely and I would stay here again.

Breakfast had the usual hotel breakfast options (with better eggs) but ran out of milk and hot water wasn't working for the instant oatmeal. The halls and common areas were comfortable but our room was very humid and smelled wet despite the a/c running and fan on. Fairly outdated and furniture and fixtures are pretty beat up. Beds were comfortable but pillows were lumpy. Pool and sauna were standard hotel experience. It's fairly charming despite the negatives. This place kind of has a monopoly on places to stay near the dunes so the price is high - definitely not comparable with the experience but options are limited. Would probably still stay here again.
