We spent Labor Day weekend at the Harbor Grand per a friend's recommendation and it could not have been better. The location is great! It's walking distance from the beach and the main strip. We parked our car when we arrived and never touched it all weekend. The hotel also provides bikes to rent but we found that most places are walking distance and the roads/paths are not very bike friendly. Check in was super simple. Our room was very clean and updated. I wish they had smart TVs to connect to Netflix but we didn't spend much time watching TV anyways so it wasn't a big issue. The restaurant did seemed to get a bit noisy at night which drifted up to our room. The breakfast baskets were a BIG hit! The frittatas tasted so good! The fruit cups were also so fresh. I tried the prosciutto croissant on our last day which hit the spot. The quality of food was top notch - just wish we were able to order more! I had an appointment at the spa as well during our stay. The spa staff is super friendly. I used the robe and spa slippers provided in our room and spent some time in the salt water pool and hot tub before my appointment. read more

I'll start with the pros: We loved this hotel because the rooms are pretty close to the lobby, not tons of walking. Easy to navigate with a 3 year old. The decor is very nice and the hotel has an overall just nice classy aesthetic with a beautiful actual working fireplace in the lobby. A HUGE one, they were nice enough to let us check in early. This is huge if you have children especially ones that need to nap. The hotel was super clean. Our room was spotless. The king suite offered so much space for the 3 of us. The location is pretty central to most things you'd want to visit in the area. The in-room breakfast makes it super easy in the morning to have a stress free bite to eat in the AM. All the food we enjoyed seemed a step above typical "hotel food" Another HUGE plus, it was basically empty the day we visited. We had the entire pool to ourselves. My 3 year old was in heaven. This alone was amazing, lol Ok so now the cons: The hotel is super DARK inside. It's just more geared towards adults. The room was painted black and also super dark. Just took away from the beautiful sunshine that was outside the walls of the hotel, Advertised in the room for smores roasting but was told by the front desk they stopped doing that. Advertised for Ben and Jerries Hotline which is another added cost when you are already paying so much for the hotel. Not much for families to do here. Reserved a Village View King Suite for my husband and I for two nights. Our first trip to New Buffalo and the Grand Harbor. Parking was a breeze as was check in and getting to our room. Beautifully designed and decorated space. Comfortable and clean. Loved having the living space and king bed. Breakfast baskets, bikes, the on-site restaurant, the marina in your backyard, location right in the heart of town were all amazing features. And an Icecream hotline- what more can you ask for. There is a train that runs through town during the day and can wake you if napping. It also lets passengers off and traffic stops for a few minutes while passengers exit the train. This is a small inconvenience but this hotel was well worth it. Staff were friendly and helpful. Indiana Dunes National Park and more just a quick drive away. Highly recommend. Stayed here in early August. Hotel is nicely remodeled, although some signs of needed upkeep starting to show - elevator had a large gash in the wood wall, buttons on elevators worn- but overall the decor is clean and modern. The good: the rooms are nicely remodeled, soaker tub and sleek bathrooms. The bikes are new and nice to ride along the side streets. The hotel location is in a great spot on the marina and just steps from Lake Michigan and the beach. The breakfast picnic baskets, which is included each morning are nice. Coffee was super strong and bitter. The meh: maybe it was the height of the season but the price for the room was ridiculous for Michigan, not LA not downtown Chicago, or NY. I imagined that for the price we'd be wowed with hospitality and service- which we weren't. We had our room cleaned since we stayed for 2 days- and we thought we'd have our water refilled - we were wrong. When we called to find out if there were refill stations, we were told to bring our glass carafe to the front desk or pool area to refill it ourselves. We also had a giant cobweb on our ceiling fixture. As I read this I can see how nitpicking it sounds, but I'm still stunned by the costs and expected a higher level experience for the price which I was prepared and did pay. This boutique hotel lacks for nothing. Room looked out over Lake Michigan. There was a fireplace, bench in bathroom and 3 way mirrors in hall. Prairie style decor was done perfectly. We had dinner downstairs and breakfast is served in a picnic basket. If there was one complaint it's that bathroom lighting was too minimal. Definitely a 5 star in my book. read more

I have never felt compelled to write a review for any place in my entire life, but my experience at The Harbor Grand had to be shared. My partner and I stayed for 3 nights (arriving Sunday midday, leaving Wednesday morning), and it was the perfect amount of time for the offseason. We payed the slim difference to get a harbor view, and it was very worth it. We felt comfortable keeping the curtains open 24/7, so when we woke up we had a beautiful morning view of the lake and sky. The complimentary breakfast in bed is a must; while the options are somewhat limited (moreso for nut allergies), the presentation and ability to pick multiple foods and drinks made every morning so relaxing. And of course it's included in your reservation so why not take advantage of that. New Buffalo was definitely in its offseason when we went, so we made use of the car we brought (thank goodness) and took day trips. We used one day to explore the Indiana Dunes National Park, where we did a moderate hike with calming views and a virtually empty trail, maybe only passing 4 people the entire time. The other full day we had we went to Michigan City to see the Centuries of Progress Houses (probably a 30 minute endeavor) and then to the Lighthouse Outlet Mall to have a little shopping day. We made use of the hotel's complimentary s'mores from 4-6 twice while we stayed, and I regret not going every day! The fireplace is very calming, and there were never other people out there while we were. We also visited the pool and hot tub area everyday, which definitely made the relaxation even better. Not to mention, the Ben & Jerry's "hotline" was such a fun touch. We got some ice cream every night, and the front desk receptionist even comped our pint on our last night. Definitely not a necessity for the experience, but absolutely a lovely and fun perk. And relaxing by the fireplace that was in our room(!!) every night felt luxurious. Our final night, we went to dinner at the Tavern that is on the lower level of the hotel. Definitely pricey, but the food was delicious. I was also impressed by the portion sizes. My partner and I split a main course of penne alla vodka, and they brought it out for us in two bowls, neither of which looked like it was 1/2 a portion's size. Highly recommend their griddled octopus, I would have ordered a second of that dish had we not also bought an array of bruschetta. Especially during the offseason, a reservation here is not a bad idea, unless you are planning on driving elsewhere for meals. Our only problem (albeit small for sure) was that our fridge didn't work. We had a few leftovers from various meals that we ended up needing to toss since the fridge was not cold. Overall, this hotel offered such a refreshing vacation. The staff was so kind and respectful of our space. We also only ever shared the pool area with adults and even then only 3 other people ever showed up besides us. I truly could not tell you how many people were staying at the same time as us because that's how peaceful the environment was. I absolutely love this place as a quick getaway from Chicago. I think we've been here five weekends in the last year and a half and it never disappoints. Absolutely love the picnic basket breakfast, the king bed, the bathroom and the service (always outstanding). I've been able to try the spa once right after they opened and had a really nice massage in a gorgeous space. I think people think of New Buffalo as a summer getaway, but we've spent more time here off-season and love it even more. If you want more space, choose a Village Suite room. If space is less important, do the Harbor or Lakeview Rooms and enjoy the view and fireplace. We have tried all but prefer the smaller rooms with a view. So many wonderful features of this boutique hotel: location, cleanliness, super friendly and helpful staff. Best of all - breakfast perfectly packed and delivered to your room with cutlery and cloth napkins in a picnic basket each morning. The lounge deck has high end chaises with thick, comfortable cushions. The on-site restaurant, Terrace Room, is elegant and features varied menu items, prepared well. Bed and pillows were comfortable. There is a spa on site that is very nice too. My one concern is the room design itself. The entryway is painted a very dark blue/black, seeming like a tunnel walking in and/or from bathroom and creating hazard at night. The hall light switch also turns on a bright light over the bed, so not usable at night if you have a companion sleeping. There is a faux fireplace on one side of the bed with a sharp cornered overhang that we each banged our heads on, causing injuries. The only drawer space is underneath the foot of the bed, reachable only by getting down on the floor to find the hand hold, as there are no handles. We only discovered plug outlets by the bed accidentally when we dropped something on the floor and found them under the small shelves - not visible when upright. I loved being at the hotel with its elegant amenities - but do think room design should be safe and function instead of just decor for a vibe. read more

It was almost always empty when we went since it was off season and mid week. The lobby had a fireplace and little seats which were cozy and nice for warming up. Aesthetically beautiful and calming, luxury atmosphere and décor, full of light woods and dark greens. Mini fridge and wine accoutrements (bottle opener, etc), and terry cotton robes are en suite. Certain rooms like the Harbor View King have bathtubs and (gas) fireplaces. Soak in a beautiful tub and then sleep by the fire with the flick of a switch or the turn of a powerful faucet. Harbor views, sunsets too. You can walk to the beach or the downtown. Breakfast baskets each morning. Negatives: bed was too firm for me, leading to poor sleep, at least on night #1. Bed also seemed shorter than the average King -probably because of the large pillow affixed to the wall at head of the bed. Sheets were a bit starched and thick/ rough to the touch, kind of like a tablecloth, but acceptable. As some other reviewers mention, sound carries from room to room, especially all in person conversations (TV not so much). Luckily, I had respectful neighbors. But trust me, you are at their mercy. Rooms are on the small side overall. Many shops in downtown New Buffalo are closed Monday and Tues (in late August at least). Bottom line: Boutique hotel, on the harbor, priced accordingly. Some really fine amenities. A nice and expensive retreat. Add these to be even better: epsom bath salt packets for the bath, in room complimentary bottled water. Vegan /dairy free choices. The Harbor Grand is a nice hotel that thinks it's a world class hotel. Unfortunately, there are many limitations that absolutely do NOT justify their price (particularly in the summer). Location: Adjacent to a small boat harbor you a see water, boats, condos, hotels, houses, etc. Not great, but not bad. It's a quick walk to downtown New Buffalo, but there's not much in New Buffalo to do. Beach: Its a long walk to, frankly, an ugly beach. MI has many stunning beaches - this is not one. The beach is so crowded on the weekend that it's chaos. The public parking is limited and chaotic. Trying to find a place to put your beach chair is chaotic. And, its not like you can walk down the beach and find a more remote and peaceful place, the beach is so crowded because the majority of the beach is a private with a rude guard shooing people away. Hotel: The hotel decor is modern, understated, and well appointed. The rooms and facilities can seem dark because the walls appear to be black, but it's a good vibe. The hotel is small and built in the same general architecture as most roadside Hampton Inns, so that imposes a lot of limitations. The front of the hotel is all parking lot view, they call it village view, but its just parking lot. Oddly, they put the big expensive suites on the front of the hotel so you pay a lot of money to look at asphalt and orange cones. The hotel was definitely not honest in its description for those rooms. Staff: The staff was generally nice, but ill-prepared to handle expectations that go along with their high prices. We made a restaurant reservation for 8 and they put half the group on different sides of the restaurant with plenty of empty tables in between. It took getting a manager to realize that we could actually sit together, and, by the way, the empty tables remained empty for the entire duration. Want an extra blanket - need a manager, AC not working - manager. Though pleasant, the staff's inability to handle basic tasks needlessly turned simple things into big problems that involved the manager. Room: The room was well decorated but our stay was very disappointing. For instance, there was no side table at the bed so everything had to be put on the floor. Even though we got a suite - the view was ugly. You could hear the cars drive in the parking lot, headlights shown through the window, and you could hear every word of every conversation people had as they walked to/from their car. Awful. This wouldn't be acceptable if I was staying at a roadside Hampton Inn, but absolutely intolerable when paying $3,000 for a long weekend. Summary, the hotel tries to be a luxury retreat but misses badly. You pay high prices for nice decor and a largely unpleasant stay. read more

Stayed here for a summer getaway weekend with my wife for our anniversary. Rates were HIGH - was it worth what we paid? Maybe not. Was it a nice place? Yes. Right on the water. Within walking distance of restaurants, shops, the beach, etc. There is a restaurant and bar on-site, and breakfast is delivered to your door (left outside the door) in a picnic basket each morning. Nice touch. Room was ok - nothing really fancy. Nice decor. Friendly staff - maybe minus the bartender who wouldn't allow to us to enjoy our drinks at the restaurant bar. Apparently it was close to closing, so we had to either take our drinks to the room or have them outside. However, when we finished our drinks outside and went to return our glasses to the bar, we noticed several couples/groups enjoying their drinks in the seating area of the bar. That was odd. This is my third stay. I've stopped here before when on business but this time I came with my husband for a 3-day getaway. We had a harborside room with a fireplace and jacuzzi tub. All my favorite things! It was quiet and comfortable. I don't know if it's because I warned them ahead of time but the room and linens aren't scented as in many hotels. (I am chemical sensitive.) Simply clean and fresh. You can slide the balcony door open to get some fresh air. We saw birds in the trees and water birds in the harbor. And heard crickets at night. You can get a glimpse of the lake past the harbor and watch the sunset from your room. Breakfast is included every morning which is pleasant but basic - nothing hot to eat. Within walking distance to the beach, shopping, and restaurants. We enjoyed our stay and would come back. The train is right across the street so next time we might save ourselves the hassle of Chicago traffic and take the train. read more

Spent the past weekend here, what a nice getaway. Terrace room with the table outside was perfect. Noise from staff at the laundry room outside our door was not. Knocking at 7am when they delivered our food basket was totally unacceptable. Let me tell you - I was horrified to find the phone ringing to tell us the food was outside. I asked for breakfast, not a wakeup call. If you're on the terrace, you should ask for your food to be delivered to your outside table instead of at the door. When i called the front desk screaming about: Getting a wake up call instead of just a food basket, the staff party at the laundry room, the guest party in the same hall by 715AM!!!(Uh, six am Chicago time people), They asked that we call them back after we wake to discuss room options. The hall was rather silent a few minutes after I yelled at the front desk. They moved us to the king size harbor view room with a fireplace, whirlpool and shower, but....I'm a smoker, see. And I like eating outside, see... And, There's no balcony on the upstairs floors. Thanks for the move - but i really preferred the other room. Oh wait? What? The kingsize room is more pricey? Why? I dont need a fireplace, we only sleep in this room - not like we're staying inside all weekend. Maybe they thought that a room upstairs over the bar was a more appropriate accommodation. I would have liked to see the king size room and make a choice in taking it or getting a discount instead. These rooms are very expensive to begin with ...but I would rather have my breakfast outside, see where I'm going with this? The pool is really nice, their hottub is great too, even though there was a wedding there this weekend - there werent many in the pool, we had it to ourselves most times we went in. The grounds are gorgeous and there's a walking path between this and the sister hotel Marina Grand, the bed, lets talk about the bed: The bed linens are quality. The pillows are top notch. The sheet count...man, must be the most beautifully dressed hotel bed I've stayed in. Ever. Their beds, however, make a lot of noise and have little or no support. (Can you ask for a firm bed when you're reserving a room somewhere?) All in all, a great retreat, but with the couple inconveniences that gave me a morning headache 2 days out of my weekend...nah. Clean and spacious but expensive rooms with surprisingly poor sound insulation. Guests in the hallway, next door and above us were easily heard. Nonetheless, we mostly enjoyed our stay. The grounds were very well kept and the front desk as kind and accommodating as any hotel we've ever visited. The room service breakfast included in room cost was a very nice touch. And the location can not be beat. However, at over $200/night, we were hoping for a much more peaceful, quiet night. Stayed last spring for a 2 night getaway that included a spa treatment for two people. The hotel itself is nice. The cute breakfast baskets almost completely make the stay worth it. Unfortunately one of us had a terrible spa experience while the other had a great one. Probably the worst massage I've ever had in my life. First, my massage was 15 minutes less than my husband's and the "therapist" acted really annoyed when I didn't want to upgrade to CBD oil! When I told the girl at checkout about my experience, she just shrugged and said that it was too bad. Honestly during the massage I had to keep myself from laughing because I felt like I was on a hidden camera show being massaged by an actor pretending to know what they were doing. Every time I think about going back to this hotel because of the location and the town, I stop myself because of how awful the spa memory is for me. If you plan to go and book a spa treatment, do some research and book a specific therapist. read more

2.5 Stars. I stayed here with my family a few weeks ago and for us our stay was a mixed bag. Also, much of my gripes are because I stayed here with two young kids. Long story short, IF YOU HAVE YOUNG KIDS, only stay here if get a room on the 3rd floor facing the harbor. Also preferably far from the elevator. See below for the reasons why. First the positives. This places has an amazing location. It is walking distance to the beach and several nice restaurants, including the one in their basement (The Terrace Room). They have free bikes for use by guests. The rooms were spacious and clean. The staff was super nice and professional. Also, the room service is a neat feature that my family enjoyed. As for the negatives, the biggest issue this place has is the ambient noise. The hotel is right next to a train station, so you will hear trains stop by from time to time. This is something we knew going in, but i happened to have a room facing away stations, so the sounds were even louder than I expected. So if you come here with young children, as we did, you will have to take trains schedules into consideration when sorting out naps. Also, in light of the fact that their restaurant offers such quality food, drinks and ambiance, it can get pretty loud and will stay that way until 10:30p to 11:00p on the weekends. I was initially staying on the first floor, but then switched to the second floor to avoid the sounds, but it still didn't help all the much. We stayed in a suite, which has a bedroom and a sitting room with a couch, which was not the best for sleeping on. On top of this, you get a ton of noise from the hallway door when you stay in this room. All the issues with noise would be more palatable if I was not paying upwards of $330.00 a night to stay here. For that amount of money, I think it is reasonable to expect more. In sum, this place has the service side down cold, but it fall short in the accommodations side. All said, I would definitely come back here for dinner or drinks, but probably not to stay. read more

Perfect for a weekend getaway from the city (Chicago). The rooms are pricey but include whirlpool tubs, comfortable beds, free wi-fi, in room fireplaces, great Harbor views, a pretty extensive DVD selection, 1 hr bike rentals, beach towels and chairs, and breakfast delivered in the am. We stayed at the Harbor Grand for our 1st wedding anniversary and toured some wineries and antique shops in the area. The hotel is pretty small, I was kinda surprised as I thought it looked larger online, but I actually ended up liking how small it was. It was super quiet, which was nice. Our room was on the 3nd floor harborside and had a fireplace, which I thought was cool. They bring you a free basket of breakfast items each morning too! It was kind of like a mix between a bed and breakfast and a hotel, only not as old and creepy as a bed and breakfast can sometimes be:) The bathrooms were really nice and updated and large as well. We went to the Marina Grand for dinner (same owners) and that hotel is huge! It was more modern and really nice as well. The Harbor is more traditional decor, but was new and updated too. The Marina Grand restaurant was great!! We didn't try the restaurant at the Harbor, but it looked great as well too. They have free bikes to ride, give out s'mores supplies to make by the firepit at night and have a bunch of free DVDs you can check out. They also have free beer and wine tastings on the 3rd Saturday of each month I think. The location can't be beat, right on the marina with picnic tables and chairs to sit outside. It was really nice. I stayed here on business based on a meeting I was attending in Michigan City just down the road. The confusing part is that New Buffalo is on Eastern Time and Michigan City is on Central. You have to pay attention when setting meeting times. The hotel itself is near the Lake and very comfortable and friendly. I particularly like the "Craftsman" wood touches and the double shower. The bed was very comfortable too. Oddly, they don't offer contract laundry service. But not to worry. I used one of there complimentary touring bikes and rode on down to the laundry! read more

Had a night away from home here with my husband. The staff was very friendly and helpful. It's right by the lake so the view its amazing! They have a list of dvds you can choose from for free, 24/7 ben & jerrys ice cream, complimentary smores kits, and breakfast choices to you in a basket at whatever time is convenient for you! This place was an excellent choice for a one night romantic getaway for my husband and myself! The staff was extremely helpful when checking in with explaining everything there is to do around the area, giving us menus for local restaurants and even offering to print out a map of antique shops for us! This place and location is just so relaxing from the rooms, the view of the boats, and the perks of staying here! We loved the free bicycle rentals, the breakfast in bed was so cute, and free DVD rentals/ Ben and Jerry ice cream late at night is the perfect touch. The only negative thing I can say is the restaurant was closed for renovations but it just gives us a reason to come back so we can eat there! read more
