View from our room that isn't Smokey.

Fiancée and I planned a trip to explore the Black Hills, and this Best Western comes highly rated. I see why: it's easy on/off the highway, centrally located, and they don't charge for parking as many do here. The morning breakfast was a really nice surprise! Fiancée is celiac, and the fact they have gluten free items is awesome! Coffee, juices, eggs, potatoes, Canadian bacon or ham (I don't eat either and can't tell the difference lol). The reason for the star deduction are the rooms. A few things: We booked a king room. Unfortunately when we arrived and entered, it reeked of smoke! Really badly, eye burning. Apparently there was a prior guest in there who wasn't supposed to be rented to? I believe the hotel is 100% smoke-free. The person at the desk that night did apologize and move us to another room. Unfortunately, it had 2 queen beds rather than 1 king bed. We're here as a couple for a Valentine's Day getaway, so that does disappoint as it isn't what we paid for. No discount on the room offered or anything for the trouble. Additionally, it doesn't look like they offer in-room safes. I've stayed at motel 6's and super 8's that offer those! Not a reassuring feeling, and now we'll be gone all day worrying about valuables left in the room. Or we'll bring them in the car and hope they aren't stolen out of there. Finally, the in-room refrigerator doesn't have a freezer section. Sucks when you bring ice packs because you plan on packing a lunch to save money in these expensive times. Can't freeze those and can't bring a lunch on our day to the badlands. The refrigerator isn't very cold either. Maybe 50-55 degrees F. Do NOT store food in there, it won't keep. So much for keeping any leftovers if we eat dinner out. A couple small nitpicks like a hair in the shower stall, hey it happens. We're here a couple of more days. Maybe it'll get better. The parking, quiet room, and the breakfast are all big pros. On the other hand, it has been disappointing in a few key areas.

Note left by housekeeping. Odd to include the last part considering all the towels were taken from the bathroom.

Stayed here for 4 nights. Overall the stay was good only issue we encountered was housekeeping. Room was spacious and clean. Room had a microwave and mini fridge. Check in and out were quick and seamless and we were able to check in a little earlier so that was nice. Location is good, about 10 mins to downtown and there's a gas station across the street. Plenty of parking so we never had an issue finding a spot. We also used the indoor pool and hot tub. Breakfast staff were very attentive; cleaning tables and refilling the food. The food options were good and varied: waffle maker, yogurt, cereal, and continental breakfast (eggs, sausage/bacon, potato). Housekeeping: after a long day, we returned to our room to find that we didn't have any towels in the bathroom. Housekeeping had left a note that they ran out of towels which I felt like they could have brought more towels at a later time. Didn't replace the tissue box or toilet paper either so we didn't have those either. Had to go back downstairs to the front desk to ask for all of these items. The beds also weren't made so not sure if it was an off day for housekeeping. On the next day, the housekeeping took back one of the toilet paper rolls we had gotten from the front desk which I thought was odd.

Overall? For the price and the area? Five star experience. From the room to the staff to the amenities, this place ran a fantastic operation. I'd stay here with my family again without a second thought WiFi? Yes, included with the room Parking? Also included, no hidden fees here Gym? Nice, free weights up to 50 pounds Two highlights: The pool area: It's indoors, with a heated pool and a generously sized hot tub. Everything was spotless and well-maintained. Definitely left an impression Included continental breakfast: For the price of the room, the breakfast was way above expectations. I believe the options rotate, but when I stayed, they had home-cooked bacon, scrambled eggs, some decent yogurt options, and the classic waffle maker. It was a great start to the day Simple, polished, and highlights what matters most to travelers passing through, particularly those with small children

This hotel is one of several new ones being built off exit 61 of I 90 at the eastern end of Rapid City. The city seems to be expanding along the interstate. There are plenty of restaurants, coffee shops, gas stations nearby. There is Rushmore mall and other shopping off I 90 just west of this exit. You can actually drive along the service road, Eglin street, rather than getting on I 90. The hotel is new. Rooms are spacious. Beds were comfortable. Bath has a large vanity. Housekeeping did a good job. Friendly staff. Free breakfast had the usual items. Well stocked. Plenty of seating. Coffee and fruit available all day. The hotel is in a good location for visiting Mount Rushmore, Custer State Pk, Badlands NP, and Deadwood. It is 10 minutes to the downtown area. There is an exercise room and indoor pool. Parking was never a problem.

King bed; USB port in lamp

We have stayed at this location twice now and had good luck both times. We had asked for a quiet location on a top floor, which was kindly accommodated. The hotel is pretty new and rooms have modern amenities - the lamp had USB port for charging. Bed was comfy. Breakfast was good. Had many gluten-free options, including bread, biscuits, and muffins, which was greatly appreciated. Didn't appreciate house keeping knocking on our door before 8am; which was kinda strange.

Nice fitness center I took advantage of both mornings!

The suite was very small, barely bigger than the king bed in the bedroom and the sofabed in the living room. The bathroom was pretty tiny, not big enough for 4 towels without hanging them on random doorknobs. There was no door between the two rooms. We arrived around 5PM, and our room was not ready yet. We were given two $15 vouchers for Starbucks to be used the next day only for the inconvenience. That was nice. When I made the reservation, I noted that there would be 4 of us in the room. When we got to the room, there were only 2 towels in the room, and there were no pillows for the sofabed. Also, the sofabed was brand new, and so the moving straps had not been removed, and the sofabed could not be opened. I had to call down to the front desk to bring scissors to open up the sofabed and to bring up more towels and pillows. The bed was comfortable, although the pillows were not great. The bathroom, as mentioned, was small with very little counter or shelf space. The shower/bath combo was cramped with a cloth curtain. Water pressure was not great, and even on the hottest setting, the water wasn't very warm and was very susceptible to getting colder. We were in town to visit the nearby sites, so we were out of the room most of the days. Imagine my surprise after returning that no housekeeping came after our first night. That was weird. After our second night, the housekeeper had come and made up the bedroom but not the living room (sofabed not made). She (she left a card with her name, Melaney) took the towels and again left only two clean towels. She did not take out the trash in any room. I was exhausted after a full day of driving and sightseeing, and the last thing I wanted to do was call down to the front desk to ask for two more towels and fresh sheets for the sofabed. It was very frustrating. Parking. The hotel itself only offers valet parking. There is a lot of street parking, and it is only $1/hour from 7am to 6pm on weekdays, $0.50/hour from 9am to 5pm on Saturdays. There's an app, so you can remember your space # and pay from your phone in the morning. The location really is wonderful, and there are neat historical things about the hotel. The kids loved looking at all the pictures and the stuffed bison heads. The staff was friendly, even if the hotel wasn't run particularly well.

Now, I'm a bit of an admitted hotel snob, but my husband & I have been married over 25 years and he knows my limits and flexibility. He assured me the place was clean enough for my standards. We are Disney timeshare holders (DVC) and also patronize Airbnbs where we can. Otherwise I generally prefer at least a 3 star, Hampton Inn/Hilton Garden experience at a bare minimum. Sorry not sorry. This place is NOT that. It seems that since my husband's stay in 2018, and even since he booked our reservation earlier this year, ownership of the lodge has changed hands. While I'm appreciative that new ownership and the changes it brings, especially in this new normal of COVID, the service we have received this week has been dismal. I wasn't exactly impressed with the exterior when we arrived - the place is pretty 'vintage'. We were informed that there would be no routine room services performed due to COVID, and we found that we had had to repeatedly ask for things like towels, toilet paper and trash bags. This morning we specifically asked to have the room serviced since we've been here 4 nights now, yet we just returned from being out all day to freshly made beds, and nothing else. No towel restocking, no trash was emptied, no other cleaning, no supplies (hand soaps, in-room coffee supplies, etc) nothing. In my opinion this is pretty abysmal and completely out of the norm for a service industry. If a guest requests a room to be serviced, the staff should, at a minimum, prepare that room to a new guest-ready/turnover level. I was willing to overlook all the other stuff but today's experience was just a nudge too far. Who in the service industry goes into a room and ignores 3 trash cans that need to be emptied? Dead bug in the sink? We have 1 washcloth for 3 people. Nothing was vacuumed or wiped down and nothing restocked. We got a decent rate on this stay, but not good enough that I'm porting my own trash out on the regular and going to Walmart to buy toilet paper. This isn't a timeshare or Airbnb stay where more autonomy is expected on the guests' part. The hot tub is closed, which again, in the age of COVID is a no-brainer, but the area looks janky with a bunch of large rocks on the spa's lid. The front office hours are hit or miss and the 'breakfast offerings' are meager as well, with a few danishes and what looks like whatever yogurt cups were purchased the night before. No rhyme, reason, or standards. Interactions with staff have not been especially friendly or outgoing, odd behavior for a family-owned and run service-industry business. We have 3 more nights here and future return trips to Rapid City will be booked elsewhere. 2 stars because the view of Rapid City from up here is nice. Otherwise 1.

Speaking of, this place is dog friendly, with an additional fee. Great grassy area (please be respectful owners, so this place continues to allow dogs) to play in. Not a lot of sidewalks on this part of town, so the grassy space was much appreciated. Not sure if I would get thr chance to stay here again, but I would book again for sure.

Despite this, the front desk employee refused to let us check in unless we paid for an additional night. We were traveling with our family, including small children, and were left stranded in the middle of the night with no car and nowhere to stay. At 2:30 a.m., we had to walk to another hotel hoping they had a room available. Thankfully, they did because of a last-minute cancellation. The next morning, I spoke with the manager, Stacy, who was absolutely horrified by what had happened. She sincerely apologized, refunded our stay, provided complimentary breakfast for our family of four, arranged a ride for my husband to pick up our rental car, and reimbursed our Uber from the night before. Her kindness and professionalism completely changed our impression of the hotel. While I truly appreciate everything Stacy did to make things right, the overnight employee's actions were unacceptable. A family with young children should never be turned away from a room that was fully paid for and reserved months in advance after the hotel had been informed of a delayed arrival. I hope additional training is provided so no other family has to go through what we experienced.

The room was spacious and unique with a hi-top coffee bar facing out over the city. There was an easy chair and King bed. We had a fridge. The bathroom was fine - everything worked. We slept well the bed was comfy and the a/c was quiet and easy to use. The furnishings did seem a bit dated. The wall had a large map of Rapid City. We had a sit down dinner with our group and the service was outstanding. I ordered a filet mignon which was prime beef that was truly excellent. My wife got a walleye that she did not like apparently too bony. We had a nice breakfast before leaving and this was the only restaurant on the entire tour that provided me with crisp bacon which I always ask for. We would stay here again when in the area. The room was decent sized, the beds were comfortable, the HVAC and Wi-Fi worked well, the room had a nice work desk, and the shower pressure and temperature were excellent. Bottles of water were available in the lobby for just one dollar with payment on the honor system. We had one dinner here and that was fantastic. The food servers and staff in general were very good. BREAKFAST REVIEW: The buffet had some good hot dishes, especially corned beef hash which is always appreciated. There were just two types of cereal, and there was just bread - no English muffins or bagels. There were zero Danishes, pastries, or muffins, which are pretty much standard in other hotel breakfasts. They had whole fruit for your yogurt and granola, but the cut fruit was obviously from a can. IMPROVEMENT OPPORTUNITIES: We saw many examples for improvement opportunities. The arms on the room's upholstered chair were badly worn out, and more significantly, the vinyl on both headboards were badly ripped and missing chunks. Our room had no refrigerator. We stayed at seven hotels on our tour, and this was the only hotel room without one. Even the peephole on the door was an issue, it was set so high on the door, I couldn't even see through it when I stood on tippy toes. There were enough electrical plugs in the room for for charging, but the two on the nightstand didn't work. The bathtub floor was chipped and was extremely slippery. Thank goodness there were grab-bars on two walls. The tub drained slowly, even with the drain removed, which is how we found it when we took occupancy. The water pooled for a while before it emptied.
