Life is sweeter, as long as you include some chocolate. I was walking up Woodmont Avenue in Bethesda, after a dentist appointment and there behold before my eyes was Bethesda Chocolates. Of course, I had to take a peak inside. It is a charming chocolate shop with every kind of chocolate imaginable from chocolate candies, to chocolates in the shape of crabs and bees, to chocolate diplomas for graduates. They also serve a large selection of coffee's, teas, and lattes. Aoife waited on me and she was truly delightful. I ordered a latte with amaretto flavor and a caramel drizzle. I also bought some chocolate covered pretzels. It is a lovely shop with plenty of places to sit comfortably and have conversations. I really enjoyed my latte and chocolate treats. There were lots of chocolates that were all handmade but I thought they were overpriced and not really artisanal. One small bar was $7.00 and one piece of dark chocolate peanut melt away cost me $11.13 in total. Not sure if that was correct but felt it was expensive for a little nothing. The real test was the taste and I was really disappointed. Just meh! The young man at the counter was not enthusiastic or friendly and expected tip. When getting none, he became even more dismissive. Atmosphere 7/10 The inside was pretty cozy and I loved that they were keeping up with the seasons as they had some fall decor up. This place had plenty of varied seating as there are window seats, sofa chairs, table and chairs, and outdoor seating available. It was fairly quiet inside so this place could serve as a pretty nice study spot. There are plenty of board games available on some shelves by the window if you and your friends are interested in that option! Drink Lavender Lemonade 6/10 Since I didn't see any chocolates that I wanted to try I ended up getting just a lavender lemonade drink. I liked that you could taste the lavender, however, the lemonade was on the sweeter side and I prefer a more tart lemonade. On a cold Christmas Eve 2024, my colleague and I were searching for a good cup of coffee given the Cafe at my hotel was closed given the holidays. We did a quick search for coffee near us and Bethesda Chocolate "popped up" as a possibility. Given my colleague has had many work meetings during the week days at the chocolate factory we choose it since it was a short drive away. As you enter the shop you notice the abundance of Chocolate offerings on the glass displays. Make no mistake this is a chocolate place that serves coffee a d not vice versa. I was tempted by the magnificent Chocolates, however, we were on a "coffee mission" today. I ordered a cappuccino. We sat in over side leather seats so we could catch up on our families and business opportunities. The Bethesda Chocolate was quite but busy on this Christmas Eve in 2024 and there was a steady stream of "regulars" buying chocolates as gifts. They were delicious pieces of art as I observed customer making their choices. My cappuccino was excellent! Bethesda has a special place in my heart since I had my first W2 job at the local Lincoln Mercury dealership washing cars in 100 degree heat! Years later after I graduated from college in 3 years with two degrees, I discovered the "real world" challenge of getting a job after college. I worked for Bethesda Florida as well. The chocolates are fine, not stellar- but for the price (almost $4 a piece- $23 for a box of 6, regardless of size/weight) they shouldn't expect the customer to add tip on top of this. It's a retail shop. They have the choice to remove the "add tip" option from their screen, but choose not to. Are they not paying their staff enough? This is tacky to do in a retail shop, is it not? I have often walked by this shop without entering. I thought how could it compare to the delicious Swiss and Belgian chocolates I normally enjoy. Well the chocolate is EXCELLENT! The chocolates I tried were delicious. Keeping in mind that I have not yet tried everything they have to offer if you enjoy chocolate you will love this place. The ambiance and service are also superb. It was great fun talking with Nathan and Ruby about the chocolate they make and what I might enjoy most. I'm giving it 4 stars so I'll start off with the good: the base chocolate is absolutely fantastic, especially the 72% dogwood blossom. The ambiance of the store is comfortable and easy to navigate. The service was helpful enough. However, outside of the cinnamon cappuccino (which was divine) the flavored chocolates I had were not to my personal taste. I love a raspberry chocolate; however what is on offer here tastes distinctly artificial and hard to swallow. The two alcohol flavored chocolates I purchased also left a lot to be desired. The champagne was good, but weak and hard to place without knowing it. The bourbon also had a nice flavor, but it seems made for those who are afraid of liquor flavored chocolates. While this is a useful offering for those who have not acquired a taste for the usual boldness of artisanal liquor chocolates, I expect to be punched by the flavor rather than gently tickled. The mocha square was also missing the usual kick of coffee flavoring that came across so well in the cinnamon cappuccino. One could have told me that was a simple milk chocolate ganache and I would have believed it. There is an art to subtle flavors and while I'm afraid Bethesda Chocolates did not meet my expectations, the Belgian chocolate on offer is just too good and beautifully prepared to give anything less than 4 stars. read more

My ONE AND ONLY COMPLAINT, is the number of children they allow to randomly run amok in the establishment. As a local favorite, families wander in pretty frequently. Every time I go, I sit down to enjoy the bookstore/cafe like environment. A few minutes in, someone comes in with 3+ children screaming and making noise. Ruins the sit down experience. Chocolate Galore. Love this cozy chocolate boutique! With so many decadent truffles to choose from, the struggle was real. There were even shoes covered in chocolate! The dark chocolate truffle was the perfect choice as the rich creamy ganache melted in my mouth. The hot cocoa was premade using milk chocolate and a tad too sweet for me. I would go for the mocha next time! I would love to see dark chocolate cocoa on the menu. The seating is nice and the couches are quite comfy. My girlfriends and I lounged around for an hour staying warm and sipping tea and hot cocoa. The basket of pastries like the croissants and muffins aren't made in house. The chocolates and drinks here are fine, but it doesn't seem all customers are welcome here. I came to this store with my child, and we were ignored and reluctantly served. Everyone else though, who was white, was acknowledged. Everyone who was white was treated warmly. We were the only exception. The store was not busy and there were just a few customers, they definitely chose to extend that service to just a few specific types of customers. They are either poorly trained or are just crappy people. Whatever it is, I will never, ever come here again and I will never recommend this store to anyone. read more

It's a nice atmosphere in the shop and I don't have any complaints about the chocolates. But the staff seems very inexperienced with things other than helping you purchase chocolates. For example, they're 0 for 2 on my coffee visits. The first time, shortly after ordering, I was the only customer in the shop and the staff just forgot to make my order. After a few minutes I had to remind them why I was sitting there. The second time, their iced coffee was full of coffee grounds. They weren't sure if that was how it's supposed to be. read more

There's plenty of chocolate variations to choose from, a welcoming/warm sitting area, an open view of the chocolate factory where everything is craftily created, an Expresso Machine, & a section for condiments to accommodate the teas, cocoas & coffees. They offer free Wi-FI, gift wrapping & the prices are pretty good for the chocolaty confections. Bethesda Chocolates is a pretty chocolate boutique with a variety of truffles and coffee drinks- my boyfriend and I stopped by after dinner, after overhearing from the table next to us about how wonderful the truffles were. We got a box of five: apricot, hazelnut, cheesecake, bourbon, and orange blossom. They were all satisfying, but we agreed that the apricot was our favorite. The hazelnut, cheesecake and orange blossom tasted as expected, still delicious but nothing that stands out. The bourbon threw us off, as it was potent, but delicious nonetheless. So first the chocolates -- they are delicious, fresh, lovely and well made -- comparable to anything I've had from a New York boutique -- well packaged in a high quality box. Prices were below Manhattan, and on par with any gourmet bakery/handmade treat shop in the Bethesda area. The coffee drink was solidly good, not great. I've stopped in twice now and both times the service has been friendly and helpful. In response to some of the reviews about their service, I would say their position as a gourmet shop begets some very entitled/pretentious clientele so take any reviews about any service with a grain of salt. The woman in front of me was rudely yaking on her phone to her friend about what she should get and taking *forever* to decide on a few pieces of chocolate (she ended up buying just a 6 piece box but took up 18+ minutes of both my time and the staff's time). Kudos to the staff for being patient and friendly (and thanking me for waiting for *her*). read more

I walk past this place all the time, but have never gone in. Today was a snow day, so I finally decided to actually check it out. I met a friend there around 11, and we set up shop and did some work in their large comfy chairs. I really like the cozy but classy atmosphere. I had a large matcha latte, and my friend had a chai latte. I also tried one of their dark chocolate amaretto truffles. The truffle was a little pricey, but very good. The matcha latte was one of the best I've ever had (and I'm a huge matcha fan). I will definitely be back, and may make it my regular study location. read more

Admittedly, I've never owned a chocolate store before. I've never worked in a chocolate store, Nor have I partnered with one closely enough to experience it's inner workings. I've never looked at opening a chocolate store, and if I ever do, it might not have a full chocolate production facility in the back. So, it is with these reservations that I make the following comment: DAAAAAAAANNNNNNG it took Bethesda Chocolates a long time to open up in this B. That being said... the final result is a quaint little hideaway that is serving espresso style drinks, a handful of different types of chocolate, and a killer hot chocolate in the middle of bustling Woodmont Triangle in Bethesda. A Moco county lot is conveniently located right next to the shop. I decided to get an espresso and 2 dark chocolate pieces. One user tip... as the two chocolates were placed on the same small plate as the espresso cup, the cup actually melted a bit of both of the chocolates and the espresso cup became a bit messy to handle/ deal with. All the employees I interacted with were pleasant, and the atmosphere is real cozy. With a mix of plush seating, stools, and backed chairs; I can 100 percent see myself coming in and getting some work done here in the near future. Glad it's finally open, and my first experience did not disappoint. read more

It is fun to see Bethesda take on more local ventures - this one headed by someone who used to be a legal adviser down in DC. This place has good potential and presents a great alternative to relax with friends over the typical coffee shop. My sister and I are pretty picky about chocolate - she works at a fancy Swiss chocolate shop up in Boston where their specialty is Dom Perignon champagne-filled truffles. I would say the chocolate here was fairly tasty - maybe second or third tier? They have great texture, some interesting ideas in terms of flavor notes, and are definitely steps above what you can get in non-specialty stores. It was not super memorable or addictive to want to keep eating more, though. The chocolates were also not incredibly creative, and I often find the fun in chocolate shops is trying chocolate in ways you may not be used to (like in exciting drinks or bizarre truffle combinations beyond the spicy chocolate trend). The DC area in general is lacking in proper chocolate shops and so I think this is a good beginning. Come give this place a try!! read more

Let me start by saying that I have had many chocolates in and out of the U.S. These were some of the best chocolates I have ever had. Are they expensive......yes. Are they worth it......yes, yes, yes! I have not been impressed by chocolates in quite a long time. My wife is also very happy we got them. We each got 6 chocolates. Every single one was amazing. Perfect blend of flavor with the chocolate, without being too sweet. The chocolate itself also has a great flavor by itself. Aniah was super friendly, and helpful. There were two people behind the counter who were extremely friendly and offered to let us try some of the chocolate for free. I ordered a frozen chocolate drink that was made from milk chocolate ganache. It was a rich and delicious. Sweet and refreshing for the hot day and seven block one walk back to the office. We also bought chocolate covered Oreo cookies, chocolate covered pretzels, and a few other chocolate pieces. Everything was decadent and worth the money.
