A fun activity for our group to do together, we booked a chocolate tasting at the Chocolate House. We were guided through the history of the cacoa plant, how it came to be chocolate, and how it is processed. Our group very much enjoyed the tasting and the interaction with the staff, we kept comparing our notes. It was a great experience and highly recommend for something different! My favorite chocolate shop in DC and my go-to for gifts for lovers of good quality chocolate. The staff are knowledgeable and helpful. I recently used their website to order a box of truffles to be sent to my mom for her birthday, asking for dark chocolate only and no caramels (which my mom doesn't like). I indicated duplicates would be fine but my mom got 20 different chocolates, all dark, no caramels, and was delighted. They shipped from DC to FL no problem, with a cold pack to keep them fresh, and packed well so everything arrived intact, nicely wrapped, and on time. read more

I cannot say enough about how great this place is. I tend to end up with difficult-to-please girlfriends, but any Valentine's Day/birthday/Christmas/etc that I buy them chocolates from here, I get rave reviews. I bought some for my mother's birthday recently and she said they were the best chocolates she's ever had. The staff is always very friendly despite the painstaking effort it takes to place various individual chocolates into those big boxes and label each one, and the level of care they put into providing great service and a quality product is inspiring. I may have found my new favorite gourmet chocolate shop in DC. I wanted to get my SO some quality chocolates for Valentines Day, which is how I stumbled across the Chocolate House. I ordered the Christopher Elbow Valentine's Day Collection chocolates through their website and selected a local pick-up. The staff is extremely friendly and had no problem with me picking up the item a day late. My SO and I really enjoyed the unique flavors and hope to try more of their original chocolate. Over brunch with this morning, I explained to my companions that we simply had to stop into Biagio after our meal. Apparently we were not the only ones with this idea on the eve of Valentine's Day - the store was packed. Still, this didn't stop staff members from spending quality time to help answer questions (mine, of course, revolved around the Recchiuti selection.) The woman who helped me even went in back to give me a catalog so I could be well-informed of the Valentine box's content. After some internal debate I decided to get an eight piece assorted box - peanut butter caramel, raspberry tea, fleur de sel caramel, yuzu, fleur de sel, salted butter caramel, earl grey, strawberry balsamic - from the case. A special touch that delighted me was discovering that each of my selections were handwritten on a legend so when I open it up I'll know exactly what I'm eating! My fabulous friends also surprised me with Michel Cluizel hot chocolate mix in an irresistible milk-churn tin. The only French hot chocolate mix available at Biagio, I'm keen to see how it measures up to recent chocolat chaud samplings in Paris! Absolutely awesome to see this little chocolate store going strong more than two years after I first set foot inside. A definite Dupont Circle gem! read more

I'm in chocolate heaven! What an awesome chocolate shop in the Adam's Morgan/DuPont Circle area. A chocolate tasting this past weekend brought me there and I was really impressed with their selection of international gourmet chocolates. They serve everything from 100% dark chocolate (umm, bitterness anyone?!) to goat's milk chocolate with sea salt, drinking chocolate, local chocolate, fair trade, organic, and everything in between. Perfect place to grab a gift for that picky chocolate lover. What really impressed me was the level of customer service. The staff takes chocolate seriously and they know their stuff. Very friendly staff and super helpful. Note: This is a very small shop (with a back room for tastings, etc.); however, they aren't short on selection and charm. Definitely check it out. Have you ever met someone who looks much better in photos than in real life? That sums up my first impression of The Chocolate House. The first few photos on this Yelp page with their white background belie the actual space. The Chocolate House is a really small chocolate boutique that to me feels more gritty than fancy. As a chocolate enthusiast, I really thought the concept of carrying the best chocolates from all over the world to be the best idea ever. I was really excited to be able to purchase my favorite chocolates from Philly, KCMO, LA, etc in one place. But The Chocolate House fell short of my expectations. Yes, it carried many brands from all over, but there was no organization whatsoever. The store also didn't have as many selection as I had imagined based on information on its website. It was out of two chocolate brands I was looking for. On top of that, service was slower than a snail. There was only one staff when I went, and I swear he spent fifteen minutes just tying ribbons for two chocolate boxes. I appreciate the attention to details, but I was pressed on time and wished there were more staff or someone with a quicker hand was there instead. Since you're not buying directly from the chocolatiers, prices here are naturally more expensive. I personally would rather order directly from the chocolatiers next time, but if you're in the area and want to try something new, this may be a place for you. read more

***500th Review!*** This is by far one of the cutest boutiques I have been to in DC, with a wide variety of locally made products and free chocolate samples all around the store. They also have fantastic truffle making class; the 50% off Yelp coupon makes it really worthwhile. My friend and I signed up together and over the course of 1.5 hours ended up making twenty delicious spicy truffles. In between steps, we chatted with the super friendly employees about tasting chocolate, and browsed in the front of the store. I spend a lot of time in DC on business, and I frequently find myself doing Yelp searches for great little places in the area. Most recently, I found that Cocova was less than a mile from my hotel, so I figured I'd walk over (hey, I'll burn off at least one piece of chocolate, right?) and see what they had to offer. Cocova is located below street level - just head down a quick flight of stairs and enter paradise! I was immediately greeted by a friendly employee, and inquired about purchasing a gift box of their handmade chocolates. He showed me the selection and the pricing structure, and I was pleased to find that their chocolates come in at about $2 each. For handmade treats of this quality, I wasn't put off by the price. It's a splurge, but I really shouldn't be able to afford to eat Cocova's treats as often as I'd like! We put together a beautiful box of their tasty treasures, but I must admit that it took some time to make all the selections! I went for the box of 15, and didn't get a duplicate of a single item. All that, and there were still so many more to choose from! They've got a huge variety of interesting flavors: pepper, lavender, whiskey, butterscotch, champagne... even fun things like peanut butter and jelly! I managed to hold off on the first night (meaning I only sampled one treat - PB&J). These are definitely chocolates you'll want to share, and they're sure to please your toughest customer! read more

The Chocolate House is less of a house and more of a shrine to all things chocolate whether your fancy is cocoa nibs, chocolate bars, drinking chocolate, confectioneries, or truffles. Here you will not get the best of both worlds, you will get the best of THE world as they scour the globe and hand pick the best chocolates from the top chocolatiers in the region, country, and the world so there is literally a who's who of chocolates that even vary depending on the season. Alex, one of the owners, served as my guide upon stepping into this unassuming little shop in the Dupont Circle neighborhood. After waiting on him help out the lady in front of me hand pick a set of chocolates as gifts for her family, he went out of his way to express his gratitude for my patience by weighing out a little extra chocolate without charge, offering up some samples of various salted caramels to find the perfect match for a boxed set I was assembling, and introducing me to a local artist in residence who has pieces on display in the gallery in the back of the shop, which also functions as a classroom for courses for chocolate tasting/making truffles, which one can sign up for online on their website. Their passion for chocolate is evident due to their efforts to connect consumers with chocolate makers and even the cacao farmers sponsoring events such as the DC Chocolate Festival (this year on April 9th) and never being complacent with their search for the best chocolates. At first I thought Alex was joking but he was probably completely serious when he told me that he would pay me in good chocolate if I had any good leads on other chocolatiers whom they could form future partnerships. Four and a half stars. Popped down the steps into this hole in the wall for the six-bar Fleurir tasting in the quaint gallery nook in back, replete with lit pedestals and a fold-out table. God bless them for having a water cooler to mellow the palate between nibbles. I kept one ear tuned to the chocolatier's discourse on his art and one eye out for that square that cracked into a generous trapezoid. (Bacon chocolate was less awesome than hoped, but really most of their flavors were lovely.) While intrigued by the displayed goodies, I eventually gravitated back towards the front to explore. The staff was reasonably friendly considering the semi-bustling evening traffic. After skimming the reviews, I was hesitant about the idea of a chocolate shop that specializes in vending other people's work. But what they lack in the my-body-smells-of-molten-chocolate front, they make up for with an abundance of credited options. (And now that I know where Veritas sources their sweets, I'll be back to use that 10% off check-in coupon.) A variety of bars for the amateur confectioner to gleefully trot back to their kitchen, baggies of on-the-go snack clusters, and a dynamic spread of truffles painstakingly labeled behind a glass display case. Pretty and yummy gifts that I'd invest in... if I were at all confident that I wouldn't devour a few on the Metro ride home. The organization is fairly logical, sorting by crafter and product type, plus the clearance shelf tucked into the corner on the right. I'm writing this review based on the quality of the chocolate. You should go in knowing that @CocovaDC uses extremely high quality ingredients from all over the world and that you're going to be getting what you're paying for. The only thing that I believe is working against this small, cute chocolate shop is that it is not well advertised and hidden away. I lived about two blocks away from the shop and walked up and down the street it was on for three months and I never even knew it existed until a coworker told me about it. You have to be really conscious of where it is when you're first trying to find it, but after the first time you'll never be able to forget about it. I took my coworker who was trying to find a nice and delicious gift. He made a box of eight and I made my own box of four. According to the saleswoman, the fleur de sol is the bestseller and for good reason because it is absolutely delicious but I was pretty frustrated when she couldn't recommend any others and there were about 20 options. I ended up going with the: 1. Fleur de Sol 2. Pomegranate 3. Butterscotch 4. Malted Milk I didn't have the malted milk but one of my friends did and he said it was to DIE for. Biagio: Where chocolate lovers can go to become chocolaisseurs! A wonderful little piece of chocolate heaven, Biagio offers a plethora of different chocolate bars, truffles, and other cacao products originating from the three tropical regions of the world (Africa, South America, Southeast Asia). Even better than the wide variety of delectable selections is being able to learn and develop an appreciation for the differences in flavors and chocolatier preparations as well as sampling them! Recommended to us by a friend, my dining companion and I went to Biagio. While all of the truffles, nuts, powders, and cocoa beans looked pretty, we were there with a purpose: dark chocolate bars! Sandy of the Biagio team welcomed us and began guiding us through the diversity of chocolates: single-origin varieties (i.e. originating from one country or estate within a country), different proportions of cocoa butter/beans, unconched chocolate (less processed, thus more fermented flavor), dark-milk chocolate, and other less common characteristics. Knowing the traits of what we like in chocolate (i.e.72-80% dark chocolate, not too fruity/fragrant/floral/earthy), Sandy awakened our taste buds to truly diverse combination of flavors among chocolates--even those from the same nation and percentage of chocolate! When it was all said and done, we nibbled a taste of over a dozen flavors and came to find our favorite: François Pralus's 75% Dark Chocolate from Cuba. This was their only bar made from Cuban cacao beans, which has a mellow mix of nut, fruit, and caramel notes along with Pralus's characteristic high cocoa butter content to make the texture a smooth caramel finish. We also got the Pralus 100% Madagascar: a pure chocolate bar that is not intensely bitter but very creamy and fruity (characteristic of Madagascar) yet still activating! ;-P After signing up for their e-mailing list, we returned the next month with a friend for Biagio's free monthly chocolate tasting day--an afternoon of over a dozen varieties of chocolate following themes, along with visual art display and wine tasting! There were many neat chocolates with interesting fillings (i.e. Aleppa Pepper+Pink Peppercorn was our favorite) and many different Madagascar varieties. They were all different, overly satisfying, and simply mind blowing. What was even better was how knowledgeable and personable the shop owner is. All my questions were answered, I learned how to enjoy more complex chocolate, and learned more about the chocolate process. Not the mention the whole time I was nibbling on various samples. I've been coming here for five years now. It used to be called Biagio back in the day. I'd only been living in America a few weeks, and I was wandering around DC one day when I walked by Biagio. One glimpse at the words "fine chocolate" on the sign and I sauntered right in. The then-owner, Biagio, had worked decades as a flight attendant and sampled chocolate from all around the world. He introduced me to some new, wonderful, and inventive flavors. Truffles are $2 a piece, but absolutely worth it -- you only need to enjoy one or two at a time. My favorites are by Christopher Elbow: lavender caramel, bananas foster. I've never found them to be as fresh at other places that carry truffles (such as Dean & Deluca) as they are at Cocova / The Chocolate House. Also, if you ever see the milk chocolate Gavottes or Valrhona crispy chocolate pearls, grab a bag! They're highly addictive and sell out quickly. I've come back over the years to buy presents for friends or family (always well-received), or treat myself to a piece of bananas foster chocolate. read more

Biagio's is worth the trip for any true chocolate lover. If you think Hersheys is good chocolate -- don't waste your time at Biagio. But, if your taste runs to Godiva and up -- then bring your tastebuds and your Visa card! The place looks like a high-end jewelry store when you walk in, and the chocolates are basically the best you've ever had. You'd think a high-end boutique like this wouldn' t believe in samples -- but you're wrong. My husband and I stopped by on the 4th of July, and William, one of the proprietors, treated us with incredible service. He explained the different kinds of chocolates, pointed out the samples, and treated us to a complimentary Fig soaked in brandy which was covered in chocolate. Have to say, it was extraordinary. I also bought a Carmel de fleur sel (or something like that) which was just amazing and melted in my mouth. My husband bought a Vosges "Naga" chocolate bar and we bought box of pralines apparently made from one of the rarest kinds of chocolate beans. According to William, the pralines will spoil us for all other chocolates! If you are serious about your chocolate, go out of your way to find this tiny gem. read more

I was aimlessly walking around Washington DC trying to find what was good to eat. I saw this place on my nearby lists with a check in offer. Too bad they were closed. We headed here the next day during business hours. Warning: the place is a bit underground so you might miss it. Once you find it, it's sooooooooo worth it. It was actually the record breaking hottest day in Washington DC the day we were there. -___- 101 degrees with 60% humidity. Awesome. Luckily this place was on full blast AC (you know...to save the chocolates, not us people) The lady at the counter was sooooo nice and helpful. I forgot her name, but she was so so sweet. She made many recommendations and because of her, I have tried the better, fresher version of a Snickers bar. There are many samples of different chocolates with different levels of cacao percentages and just about everywhere from the world. This hidden gem is so eclectic-ly full of chocolates from countries you wouldn't even imagine producing chocolate bars. There's also many innovative creative flavored truffles in the display case. I had to get my Aunt some chocolates for her retirement and with her being Boujee I had to step my game up from Hersey's Kisses or else I wouldn't be invited over for thanksgiving this year. So my girlfriend and I went here for the first time during one of their Saturday afternoon chocolate tastings. That alone is definitely worth the 5 stars! It was a bright sunny afternoon, and although we first walked past the place (because it is located on a below-street level), we were so impressed when we finally walked in. The aroma of chocolate was everywhere and we were greeted with smiling faces and quickly escorted to the back where the chocolate was beautifully displayed for tasting. They looked like little works of art - especially the multicolor chocolates displayed in the glass showcase in the front of the store. By far, my favorites were the dark 65%+ cocoa chocolates. So good! I also tried other varieties - like white chocolate, and chocolate bark, but I do have to say simple is better!
