I can't recommend Betsy Stanfield highly enough. I worked with Betsy in both couples and individual therapy for over two years. Not all therapists are willing to work with both partners in a relationship. For me, it was essential to have a therapist who knew and deeply understood both myself and my partner. I can see how difficult it might be for a therapist to work for and advocate for both partners in a relationship. However, Betsy seamlessly navigated our individual and couples therapies. It's awkward to open up to strangers on Yelp about your therapist, but I remember looking here for opinions years ago when searching for a marriage counselor. The biggest challenge I experienced when looking for a counselor was how on earth to find one. It's tough enough to take that first step, but what happens if you don't click with him or her? You have to start the search anew and i wasn't sure i had the wherewithal to go through some kind of counselor vetting process. Without a lot of people to turn to for a personal referral, I did exactly what you've done: I logged on to Yelp. Seemed an unlikely place to find a good counselor, only because I'm used to Yelp to find good tacos or a quiet coffee shop where I can kick back and read a book, but alas, that's how I found Betsy and I can honestly say I wouldn't be the person I am today without her. I looked her up for couples counseling, which led to both that and a number of visits for individual counseling. On both accounts, Betsy was a godsend. My work with her has affected every my life both personally and professionally. I gained a few critical kernels of understanding that will allow me to better navigate the pitfalls that I habitually have always found (or created for myself) in many types of relationships. And in the interest of full disclosure, the relationship didn't last, but it was through Betsy's advice and insights and nurturing that we were able to go through the split civilly, with a lot of personal growth, and most importantly, with our friendship in tact. But to be clear -- I didn't seek Betsy's counsel to save the relationship. That is no counselor's task. Betsy fosters communication and understanding both for yourself, and between you and your partner. She opens up blocked lines of communication so you speak clearly and openly about your needs, feelings, and vulnerabilities. You'll never have as frank and open a conversation with your partner as you will when you're sitting with Betsy. On an individual level, she helped me understand my triggers, how things in my past affect my current behaviors and responses, and she seeded the tools I need to change the behavior patterns that did me more harm than good. People often ask me how it is that I was able to move beyond the typical hurt, disappointment, confusion that marks any break-up and my answer is always the same --- because I went through the process with my partner, not in spite of her, and that was due to the care we received from Betsy. I could go on, but suffice to say, you cannot do better than Betsy. I don't believe so. Seeing Betsy, the counseling experience, is like going to the health club for your emotional and spiritual self. Betsy was very understanding over the phone and had time available to see me the next day. Her office is a nice environment, and conveniently located. I only had one session with Betsy before deciding it would be in my best interest to seek another counselor. I left Betsy's office in tears, feeling worse about my situation than when I came in. I had just found out the week before that my husband had been cheating, and Betsy said we would work on my role in his cheating. Literally, the first time she met me, she blamed me for what my husband had chosen to do behind my back. I've since found a more supportive counselor that I've been seeing for almost six months. After my session, I emailed Betsy to let he know I intended to find another therapist, and asked her to send a receipt for my session for insurance purposes. She responded quickly and sent the needed paperwork, but her interactions over email were cold. It felt like she was passive-aggressively communicating her dissatisfaction that I chose not to see her anymore. Now, months later, she sent me a connection request on LinkedIn. I don't work in the psychological field. I also don't think it's appropriate, ever, for a therapist to reach out to a client (current or former) on social media, especially a network used for professional purposes. read more

I'm writing this review because I want others to know that they can find some real help. I cannot say enough great things about Betsy and how much she has helped me and my marriage. I have been seeing Betsy for over two years, alone and for couples counseling with my husband. She has (very compassionately) helped me recognize and address some long-standing issues, habits and thought patterns. I'm really not sure my marriage would have survived without her guidance. We were in a very sad and desperate situation when we started seeing Betsy and she has helped us to deal with the past and to find a path back to each other. She provides practical advice for dealing with serious problems and feelings. My life and marriage are both much happier and healthier than when we started seeing Betsy. I've been a client of Betsy's since late-2015. I went into counseling facing a more complicated set of situations than I ever could have imagined as the result of a set of serious traumas, which began when I was quite young. I've confronted everything from PTSD to relationship issues to patterns of acting out in hurtful ways during the course of therapy with Betsy. Betsy Stanfield, quite simply, guided me to a better quality of life I did not know how to reach on my own. I began seeing Betsy with my then-husband as couple's therapy, but ended up seeing her on my own for more than a year through our eventual divorce. Aside from counseling me through the divorce, she guided me through a major identity crisis that has been going on most of my life, and helped me develop the tools to create a whole, happier self. While the work was intense and often uncomfortable, I attribute my current sense of solidarity and independence to her. Betsy is the most amazing counselor that I have had the pleasure to have met. She makes you feel very welcomed and is a very safe environment to share anything that you though you would not share with anyone. I do not recommend her at all. She almost got me and my husband divorced inspite of the fact that we told her we wish to sort things out.We Attended so many sessions..i guess it was around $550 a session, she just listened and offered no advice, we were there for advice and asked her all the time but she had none to offer.She was trying to make us talk going by what any councelling book says( read a few and could see exactly what she is trying to enact)..trying to get us talk about our feelings about each other when we were in a fought last night ... anybody would make out that we will say mean things we din't feel. It all felt like a joke she asked us to do some sort of play say things three times... when we are there so stressed about our marriage and had anger ...it felt like a joke we could not wait to end. overall she was not successful in what she was trying to do going by the theroical books she refered and had no practical exp of felicitating a conversation or sensing a situation and handle situations.. .I felt she has no skill set to do that.. . then i researched about her and she recently did a counselling course from UT and was in some other profession previously. it explained it all. We stopped going to her and gave up on marriage councelling coz of this exp. Finally we worked things out by mutual effort. I feel it's dangerous to have an inexperienced person allowed to counsel people for something that may spoil their life.. I would suggest a person should start her career by assisting an experienced counseller and gain practical exp for good 5 to 10 years instead of starting practice right away. This is a very sensitive profession. You may spoil somebody's marraige/ spoil some kid's entire life by separating his parents. read more

I actually read a handful of reviews from some of Betsy's patients before deciding to reach out to her so I know how important genuine feedback from the community is to a lot of people. I can say without any exaggeration that working with Betsy was one of the most important decisions I have ever made and one of the best gifts I have ever given myself. I sought out Betsy to help me work through some issues stemming from my childhood that have manifested into my latter years and effected many of my relationships with people I care for very deeply. Betsy creates a very nurturing and safe environment so much so that I found myself trusting her with things I had never shared with anyone. She has a gift for putting someone in the hot seat in a completely non intrusive way that gets a person really thinking through things they may have never considered. She is adept at giving a gentle nudge to help you come to your own conclusions and is an amazing listener. Sure- a therapist is supposed to listen to you but how many listen well enough that they know how to guide a conversation into areas unchartered but immediately recognized as relevant? I never felt unsafe or pressured to open up more than I was comfortable with at any stage in our work together and her sessions feel like a workshop in the sense that we are working through my problems, concerns and anxieties together. The one downside of working with Betsy is that she does not accept insurance but enough independent research on my end revealed that the truly gifted and talented therapists often times do not deal with insurance companies.
