A small library that is painted green with a shingle roof, it might be easy to miss this along the street as there is so much other greenery. But here it is, across from Austin-Baggett Park. The library has a single door and inside, two shelves that are nearly all children's books. Which is understandable as the sign hanging from the front suggests that it is a "Children's Little Free Library." The library is listed in the Little Free Library database and on their map. The steward's email address is there and the caption reads, "Please come and visit our sweet Little Library. We are located across the street from a park where you can sit and enjoy your book or take it with you." It is Charter number 144115. Thrillers, fiction, a couple of kid's books and some non-fiction and personal development. Some of the books still have their Dewey Decimal stickers on the spine indicating that they're retired library books. This is charter number 76609. There is no indication of the steward published in the database. Main Street is quite busy and there is no room to park unless you use the funeral home's lot. The library is white with a shingle roof. The "house" has adult books and the "garage" has children's books. A small cup with bookmarks is inside with mostly paperbacks today. I was happy to add a couple of thrillers from my own library that I am spinning down. Due the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, however, many of our local Food Banks ceased accepting in-kind donations from private donors. This was despite the long lines of hundreds of cars filled with families lined up for hours to obtain donated food due to loss of jobs, incomes, homes, & more. In addition to being saddened to hear of the tragic loss of lives, seeing how many individuals & families were at-risk for going hungry due to the economic impact of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic brought tears to my eyes. So...in addition to monetary contributions, I still wanted to do more to help others in-need. After pondering the age-old question, "What can I do?" I went online & found "The Little Free Pantry." Headquartered in Arkansas, "The Little Free Pantry" started as a grassroots mini pantry movement of neighbors-feeding-neighbors. It has grown to locations throughout the United States (& now global), & is similar to the "Free Little Library" concept. Instead of books, you can donate food, personal care, &/or paper items to those who are in-need, or take what you need if you need it...no questions asked! The pantry will usually appear as a wooden box affixed to the top of a post --- similar-looking to a giant doll or bird house with a door you can open to leave & take items on-&/or-off the shelves, & are found at locations such as churches, parks, community centers, or even outside of a neighbor's house! Interested? Simply visit their website at: http://www.littlefreepantry.org, enter a zip code near you, & check it out! Unfortunately, there was no "The Little Free Pantry" near us, so we drove to Long Beach where one was located outside of a church. We were sad to see that the shelves were bare (except for a few pieces of trash), but it enabled us to fill the pantry with lots of goods! If you have an opportunity, check out "The Little Free Pantry," & (if you would like), make a donation to help someone in-need. Or if you need to, feel free to stop-by & grab what you need...someone may have left a little something for you. Who knows? We just may open a "Little Free Pantry" of our very own! Rusted out pool pipe needed replacing. Jerry showed up on time the same day and disconnected…read morepiping. He recommended piping be put underground, being late in the day he showed up the next morning to assess the situation and accused the builder of a 6 year old house that the gas line was 'not up to code'. I contacted the builder concerned who reassured me it was with photos and a video. He then reassessed the situation and determined it was ok then said he would be "right back". He never returned that day. It being day 2 with gas for hot water, i contacted another plumber. I texted him and figured he didn't want the work. He called back and said he still wanted to complete the work, but said he had 'emegencies' that day and forgot to contact me. I said that's fine but i need a fixed bid. He said he could provide an estimate but "didn't know what he was going to find" in the ground. Which is not a "fixed" bid. The new plumber showed up the next assessed the situation and determined that digging was not required and gave me a firm cost. They had my gas back on by the afternoon. Meanwhile, I told Jerry i would pay for the work completed as I felt bad. He showed up to my house without notice and demanded payment then as 'he had to be somewhere'. As I was out i told him i could leave him a check when i got back but couldn't magically appear at that moment. I ended paying Jerry for the 'work' he completed. A nice fellow, but not very focused on the customer's situation. He recommended unnecessary work ( a bunch of needless trenching) and needless anxiety (by suggesting my gas line was not up to code and the house may 'blow up'). And i spent $460 on nothing but grief and a 2 day delay. Wouldn't recommend. Find someone else.
