Absolutely awful experience. First hair dresser messed up so bad and just wouldn't see it until another lady pointed out OBVIOUS issues with cut. Tried to fix it but suggested we come back as hair grows a bit. Assumed a cut for 16 year old boy is easy enough for anyone. Never ever had this sort of issue. read more

Demoralizing experience, the make hair stylist cut my hair with anger and aggression. I asked for 2 inches off and instead he cut off at least 6 inches. I had to also to trim some of my hair when I got home and then go get another haircut to repair the damage. It's too bad because my first hair cut was fine here (with one of the female hair stylists) and I trusted it would go well this time. Very preoccupied service, too. Not a good experience at all. I was very impressed with Wanna. She did an outstanding job with a wash and blow out. She was fastidious with making sure my neck was kept dry. She gave me a scalp massage!!! Ommmm!! The blow-out was perfect: straight, shiny, beautiful hair. I'm suspect of any of the negative reviews, frankly. They are also a L'Oreal Color Salon, which are difficult to find. I only use L'Oreal color on my hair, so, I'll be back again and again. So pleased they are a 5 minute walk from my new apt! read more

I had three perms from Better cuts. she "Hana" was always showing up late for an appointment. 1st visit: she did great job. 2nd visit: she did OK. 3rd visit: she perform dishonest work, she was rushed because she was late, this was my first experience that she putting perm solution without cotton strip around end of the hair. she covered shower cap over the head and she was putting solution, just pouring under the shower cap without looking. result: no curls, all straightened next day, I sent her picture, she didn't say sorry, she didn't offer another perm. she knows how to do the great jot, I felt she just didn't put efforts because she was late. Mediocre blow out. Not a polished finish at all. I do better at home and for $50.00 I certainly expected more than a quick, poorly completed, still damp blow out. Even when I said it was damp she hit it with the blow dryer for a minute and asked if that was ok. If you are the professional I expect you to know the answer. My wash was one wash through even though I said my hair was pretty dirty and needed a good cleaning. Unfortunately, I would not go back again. My first blow out was decent, not great, but I came back to see if maybe it was an off day. read more

Listen this place is great! not just the staff but also the customers in this area on my visit. Even during Covid they were super understand and very well versed in there salon skills. What I also like is that their staff is also well diverse. So for those with "preferences" based on their hair styles, they got you covered. I've been here once but I'm glad I came here. Made an appointment and was accepted right away. The salon is very clean and well equipped with supplies. The best part is that the staff aren't awkward so if you're a conversation type of person they are too! lol. I've been here several times, and have been very pleased with my cuts. Hanh has been my stylist. He's great at taking my simple ask (high skin fade) and then using his eyes and skills to bring the cut together. He's recommended certain things to me as he's cutting. I really appreciate him as my stylist! Happy to see this salon open again. They're also clearly a neighborhood favorite - I recommend calling ahead for an appointment, if you can. This is the third or fourth time I have brought my son (almost 2 years old) to Mona at Bettercuts. Mona gives off great (young!) grandma vibes, let's my son play with a comb, and is patient when he gets wiggly. Today he sat independently in the booster seat for the first time, and other times I have held him in the chair. She will do as much blending and detailing as the kid allows...timewise, our sweet spot is around 15-20 minutes. I can't say it always looks perfect, but it's good enough! I really appreciate her great availability - if I call ahead before I come, they will confirm that Mona is available and can take my son. My long time salon Cutaway Hair surprisingly closed on Piedmont Ave during the pandemic. I will miss Hisan, Irene, and Jenny. They left no goodbye message. Just went poof! But that's their no fuss style that appealed to me all these years. From the myriad salon choices on Yelp, I picked Better Cuts for the generally good reviews and easy access on Piedmont. The highly recommended Hanh was not available but I got an excellent haircut from Cindy. The establishment is clean and well appointed. And reasonable. Worst experience ever! I have been coming here for years to get my eyebrows waxed and never had a problem. However, today was the worst Andi will never return. First, the lady burned my skin with scalding hot wax. Then the wax and paper got stuck to my skin. She kept on picking at my skin for about fifteen minutes, which was excruciatingly painful trying to pull off the wax and paper. I started to tear up because it hurt so bad. Then she had the nerve to say, "You're too sensitive. Come back another time." I said, "What about my other eyebrow?" She literally told me once again that I'm too sensitive after she burnt my skin and had no clue what to do. So, now I have to get an appointment with Benefit to correct this hot mess. I like this place. Good price for the area, they listen to what I wanted to cut (even if it wasn't their style ). Ended up with a really fun haircut that I get many compliments on. Also, I've come to notice, that we sometimes have the instinct to assume that others know exactly what we want and that just isn't the reality. If you don't think that the haircut is headed (no pun intended) in the direction you'd prefer, then I make the suggestion to speak up and advocate for yourself. These folks do really good work and have always been accommodating based on my experience. Tell them what you're looking for instead of getting upset and writing a bad review. read more

This place is better than what exactly?? This place is the reason I HATE getting haircuts. I usually go to Lan Beauty Salon on University Ave in Berkeley...right by the UC Berkeley campus, but I was in Oakland and decided that I really needed a trim. I called into the salon at 3:00 and made an appointment for 4. Let's just say that this place started with 5 stars. Minus 1 star: I had an appointment at 4pm, but I wasn't able to get my hair cut until 4:35pm. Down to 4 stars. Minus 1 star: My hair is pretty darn long. *Was pretty darn long. Before it was hacked off, my hair was past halfway down my back..and I loved it. I only went in for a trim, because my hair was getting dry at the tips. My requests were simple, but specific - it's hard to completely mess up long hair. I am cringing as I am typing this out....my hair at this very moment looks like someone took a lawnmower to my head. It looks like I have a shoulder-length bob, then a layer of really, really long hair underneath. It's so choppy and the back looks like a hack job. I really don't know if it's possible to fix this mess. Down to 3 stars. Minus 1 star: The hair dresser was VERY rough with my hair. I *had* very long and pin straight hair. No tangles. The lady tore through my hair. I felt as if she was rushing through my haircut. She kept jerking my head around and even hit me a couple times with the blowdryer. Ouch. Down to 2 stars. *Minus 100: Being so rough with my hair, she ended up RIPPING out my earring. Her comb caught in my earring and since she was pulling through my hair so quickly, she ended up TEARING out my earring. OUCHHHHH. The GOLD earring was, needless to say, ruined. The backing broke off and it was just a sad, sad situation. My ear was throbbing and swelling. All the lady said was "oops. Is that gold? You can fix that." Then she continued to tear through my poor head. UM EXCUSE ME...YOU'RE NOT FRIGGIN A JEWELRY MAKER...and apparently not a hair dresser either.... down to -98 stars. Minus 1: I got a cut without shampoo, a broken earring, a red/swollen/bloody ear, and a hack job haircut for $35. HAHAHA WHAT??? With this experience, they should have paid ME! She didn't even offer to pay for the earring. Down to.....-99 stars?? Yelp is too nice so I can't give -99 stars, but if I could, I would. I'M GOING BACK TO LAN BEAUTY SALON IN BERKELEY. Two weeks I was think about getting a perm but a little scared since my hair is all grey. I walked down the street to where I work and found this great little shop. The young lady Hanna did everything I asked for. Plus when I tell someone how much I want cut off I actually want them to listen to me. Hanna did just that cut just the amount I asked for. I went there on Saturday October 17th 2020 and I was very unhappy with my haircut I went in for a trim; I had photo to go of my haircut I wanted but she still cut it her own way and cut it all off. Such great hair services at the beginning that unfortunately went slowly and consistently downhill. Service is often rushed when the number of walk-ins swell, leading to sloppy results. Interaction has been at times overly familiar, unprofessional, and plain rude. When you tell your haircutter that you asked for the hair to be cut shorter, and he responds flippantly with "oh shut up, I know what I'm doing" -- take it as a sign to find someone new. I am probably far pickier about my hair than any (rational) man should be, and what helps me sleep at night is that as a balance of my obsessive tendencies, I never pay too much for styling services. Of course finding adequate service is easy with a deep wallet, but if you want something everyone can afford, that gets tricky. So when I find a place that fits, I do my best to stick with it. Although they could have probably thought of a "better", more alluring name, I gave it a shot anyway as the first place I tried after relocating to the east bay back in June. Walking in, it's very nicely appointed; feeling much more upscale than you'd expect--especially in this price range. I have never had a problem as a walk-in, though I do call ahead to make a loose appointment even though they always have empty seats. In fact I have never seen another person being tended to while I was there; always the lone patron. That actually concerns me a bit, even after 5-6 months, though perhaps as a newly installed business, they're still building a base. Anecdotally from one of the stylists, things have been getting busier, which comes as a slight relief. I'm not sure how to spell it, but the petite Vietnamese guy, Han, is my stylist of choice here. Super nice, very competent, and willing to make edgy suggestions. In fact, all of the folks here are young and trendy without being annoyingly hipster. While he couldn't convince me to try his shaved mohawk thingy (yet), after giving him some room for creativity, he did put a nifty twist on the style I walked in with and walked out very pleased. He even cuts and textures without those awful shortcut (texturing) or electric shears most places use to save time... he does it the long way by hand (at my request), and I am more than happy to tip a little extra for it. I really want to give this place five stars, but I have to knock it one for the inconsistent charges. Their website quotes a men's cut for sixteen bucks, their in-store signage says seventeen, though I typically get charged in the low twenties somehow. I'm not really sure why, but it's a weird inconsistency that I wish they'd figure out and just be upfront about it on all their customer-facing materials. Bottom line: I really dig this place. It has a modern, trendy vibe that includes its friendly, capable employees. After taking a chance with my precious mop, I am more than happy to go back, and never have a problem getting in whenever I want. Very affordable, especially for the quality of service, though remember to either ask or double check your receipt to ensure the bill is correct, if that's important to you. read more

The first time I went to BetterCuts, i got a decent haircut for a decent price so I continued to go. But my last two experiences there have made me look for a new salon. I have curly hair that is generally difficult to cut, but on 2 occasions they either completely ignored my request or did something I didn't ask for. One time a woman (i have no idea what her name is) asked me if I wanted my hair straightened which I replied no, but she then began straightening my hair until I told her to stop. In my most recent appointment, I asked the woman to give my hair layers and then she pretty much ignored it and began blow drying my hair (which I didn't ask her to do). She then botched my hair making it uneven and difficult to fix. This place has really great prices which is what kept me going there and I gave them a few chances to redeem their previously bad haircuts, but sometimes quality triumphs over price. I hate to give them a bad review because they are very nice, but I've had one too many bad haircuts. read more

Searched all over yelp for a women's haircut that was under $40 and finally found it here. I had actually tried this place a year ago as a walk-in and liked it, but hadn't been too impressed. This time around was different. Scheduled my appointment about 3 days in advance for an 11:00 time slot with Trinh. Got there at 10:50 and she took me right over to the seat and got started. After some hair discussion I told her I wanted a trim and layers. Shampoo, cut, dry, and style later I had a fabulous haircut! I loved that Trinh took her time with my hair. The whole thing took her about 45/50 minutes and I felt like she was really making sure that the layers were perfect. Plus the products she used to give my hair volume smelled amazing! I've read some comments about her being a little rough, which I do agree with a bit (she's certainly not tentative) but really, who wants a sissy cutting your hair either? Over all, I walked out with exactly the cut I wanted and only $40 out of my pocket ($35 for the cut and a $5 tip). My daughter just got a cut. It took 11 mins for a straight trim. Pretty sure she used two spritz of water and maybe 10 cuts with the scissors, the cost was 25$! A men's cut is 19$ and they took 30 mins. She said my daughter's cut was more expensive because it's long, it's barely shoulder length!
