This review is for Martha Muga! I am new to the area and have been looking for my go-to stylist, and I think I've found her. I came in for a full haircut today after a long time going uncut and unstyled, and I feel transformed. She took a look at the photos I wanted to refer to and was immediately confident and flattering--and she executed the perfect cut and style. We had a really lovely and fun conversation that made me feel welcomed and engaged, and I'm excited to come back again soon for future cuts. We talked briefly about the kinds of things she thought would look good for my hair specifically and what it would involve, and I think her eye for style and hair is impeccable. I'd already trust her with anything! I will definitely be coming back. For the shop: It's in the cutest little part of the neighborhood, feels safe and it was kind of quite on a Saturday afternoon with lots of trees and lots of parking. It is near the 57 and the Shellmound bus lines, and it's in walking distance of the Public Market/that area, which is perfect for me. The shop is spacious for having two chairs. It feels special and exclusive but also homey and cozy at the same time. The hair products they use SMELL SO GOOD. I really liked this place and look forward to coming back again. read more

$90 and 35 minutes of what I could easily sum up the attitude of the hair stylist as "it is what it is" accompanied by the shrug emoji with arms out and palms up. Everything about this experience was questionable at best. First, during shampooing, the stylist sprayed all over my face. More than once so it was not an accident, it was lack of thoughtfulness. They didn't bother wiping the water off or attempted to block the water with their hand. It seemed they wanted to quickly get it over with, not even tried to shampoo the hair in the back by lifting up or tilting my head to the side once. And as expected, no head massage. Then came drying with a towel. They could not care less. At that point, a robe wasn't offered, but it didn't matter, they slapped the completely soaking-wet towel on my shoulder, made my clothes wet immediately. At the same time, water was streaming, not just dripping, down from my hair and from the towel onto the floor as I walked back to the chair, because there was so much water. I looked into the mirror, my face had water, it was obvious, they knew they sprayed all over my face. The seat was wet, my clothes were wet, I was uncomfortable and cold during the rest of the time being there. I thought to myself, it had only been 10 minutes since I walked in, the haircut hadn't begun and I already had a bad feeling. My hair was cut and done in 10-15 minutes. I was surprised and thought, my previous haircuts usually sectioned into at several smaller parts and meticulously going back and forth to make sure the cut is even. How could this be it, surely they plan to detail it after they blow dried the hair, right? Then came blow drying, where you press the nozzle of the hair dryer onto the hair and pull and repeat. The heat was hot against my scalp it hurt, and I suddenly realized that they didn't put any heat protectant before this, while other salons had always done it. Was I being too spoiled, I questioned myself, that heat protectant had always been unnecessary? Total 35 minutes, and I felt every step could had spent a little more time, put in a little more effort, showed more care and done better, because, why not? I arrived to my appointment exactly on time and no one else was waiting after me, so what was the rush? Give me the 60 minutes your website appointment stated and give me the high-end price of $90 haircut service that I paid for. I say that because after I got home, for the first time using my mirror to see the hair in the back, it was choppy! The things I noticed that you did with such carelessness, then it's natural to assume that the haircut would also be done with carelessness, and indeed that was the result. To be blunt, this service reminded me of going to Supercuts when I was thirteen, except I paid $15. My experience was only based on one hair stylist at the salon. read more

I've gone to a lot of salons. I've gotten so many cuts and colors, but my hair always ends up looking terrible soon after due to poor maintenance (my fault completely). I've also been to the fanciest, most pretentious places. SHED is different. The specialists here just happen to be good at what they do and they're not trying to show-off or be anything else. They're incredibly knowledgable and they genuinely want to help you. This is the first time I left really, truly understanding my hair texture and how to take care of it. Martha knows hair and she knows texture. She gave me exactly what I asked for and more. She taught me what my hair texture is, what it needs, and how I can take care of it. And this all just naturally came out as we chatted about things throughout the session - she's an easy person to have a chill conversation with. I came in with the saddest, dried waves and left with bouncy happy natural curls. I also appreciated how straightforward and honest Martha was about coloring my hair. She recommended I go to a coloring specialist since I would need a color correction if I wanted to refresh my highlights. So I went to Tracy for my refreshed balayage. She was also very genuine and straightforward, setting expectations on what my hair could do after already being so heavily bleached. She listened deeply to what I was hoping to achieve, how I wore my hair, and how I wanted to feel about my hair. She intentionally highlighted places to make my hair pop in unexpectedly beautiful ways. Tracy also toned my hair to compliment my skin tone! What made the biggest impact on me though was also the after-care she walked me through so I could do my best to maintain the health of my bleached hair. It's been a few days and my goodness.... I booked my 8 year old daughter in for a French bob with Kelly last Friday. The salon itself is very cute with easy street parking down a quiet street in Emeryville. Kelly was super nice and sweet to my kid, and knew exactly what she was looking for (Amelie!). She really took her time to get it absolutely perfect, which I really appreciate, especially on a kid. My daughter is over the moon with her new cut and has gotten tons of compliments already. The price was also really reasonable at $80. We will be back! read more

scheduled a cut with kelly as a new client. from the moment I walked in, the experience was disappointing. she was lounging in a chair when I walked in - not even a hi, or can I help you. once seated, she just looked at me -- like I was imposing on her free time or something. so I went on to explain what hasn't worked for me in the past and looking to her for suggestions. all I got back was what she couldn't do. really negative. was ready to walk out. she ended up trimming a bit. so I paid $90 plus tip (felt sorry for her) for a "cut with a lot of attitude". what a total loser - don't worry kelly and the shed - I won't be back. suggest that others don't waste their time or money there either. read more

I have been going to Edwin for the last 2 years and I always LOVE my results. He always knows the look I am going for and executes perfectly. I go to him every 6 months and the grow out still looks good! My before is also a 6 month grow out from my previous haircut from him. I find that it's very hard to find a stylist that can cut front bangs really well that still compliment's a person's face. He can take someone's hair inspo and adjust it accordingly to flatter someone's unique face/features (because let's face it, just because someone wants a haircut a certain way, doesn't mean it will look as good on them as the person in the photo). He's honest, funny, and I love our bi-annual catch up. I cannot recommend Edwin enough if you are looking for a new hairstylist in the Bay. A full service will cost you $100 + tip but he's worth every penny. :) read more

This review is for Martha Muga at SHED Salon. Martha is so wonderful. If I'm sitting in a chair for a few hours, I'd like someone who I can have a good conversation with while also enjoying my self-care time. Martha is super knowledgeable about hair - she observed a couple things about my hair, and I found the styling and care information super helpful. I got a balayage done in my initial visit and toning during the 2nd visit. I loved the way the balayage turned out. Martha took her time but I didn't feel like I was sitting there forever. She gave me recommendations for my hair but was not pushy whatsoever (I think we've all been there at some point). Pricing was reasonable, parking was super easy - it's on a fairly quiet street in Emeryville. Booking was simple on the website and you can text her for booking questions as well. Masks were worn and kept on during the whole service. Overall I loved her energy, skills, and service. So happy to find my hairstylist in the Bay Area! I have wavy, thick, black hair and she's perfectly layered and styled it both times. You know a haircut is good when you're not sick of your hair a few months after the cut. I really, really distrust stylists--too many experiences with asking them for one thing, and they give me something entirely different. (Usually, they lop off more inches than I asked for.) I did a lot of research before going to Shed, and whew, I'm glad I did. It was a pretty dramatic change for me. I had really long hair--down to my lower back when wet--and I wanted it cut short. Not a pixie cut, but definitely not touching my shoulders. Kelly was super enthusiastic about the idea and very, very reassuring that it would look good on me. She tied my hair off and made the first big snip so that I could donate it (16 inches!). I was in the chair for a while--over an hour--but she checked in continually to reassure me and gave me tips for styling my new, much shorter hair. If you're prepared to pay a little more, it's totally worth it. Shed has a really soothing atmosphere with quiet music, a nice aroma, and a really homey vibe. For dramatic transformations I couldn't recommend it enough. Oh, and don't forget to knock--maybe it was because Kelly was the only stylist there, but the door was locked when I arrived for my appointment. read more

Edwin is wonderful!! I asked my friend for a recommendation because her hair always looks great, and I'm so glad she told me about him. He cut my hair for the first time today, and I really think this is one of the best haircuts I've ever had. I have long hair with layers, and sometimes they can end up looking disconnected or too chunky because I have a lot of hair. Edwin really took his time and did a beautiful job blending the layers and perfecting the cut. He kindly indulged me at the end when I asked for more blending in the areas where I know my hair is prone to getting heavy once it's not perfectly styled. The end result looks so good; it's exactly what I wanted. Edwin has been cutting hair for 16 years (I think that's what he said) and his experience and care truly shows. My first time trying balayage, and I wasn't sure what to expect. Tracy explained the different coloring techniques and we discussed what I was going for... but I didn't bring pictures, and it was her first time meeting me, so I just held my breath and hoped for the best. Tracy put me at ease with her fun, grounded, energy and she was easy to talk to! Nothing to worry about, my hair came out Awesome, I love it! She also used an Opaplex treatment on my dry sad hairs so not only does it look good, it feels happy again! The overall vibe in the salon is friendly, clean and stylish. I don't know why but my previous review was deleted by Yelp. Since then, I gave another try on this place so here I go again. 1st time - I saw Edwin. First of all, he's a sweet & nice person to be fair. But long story short he destroyed my hair. I specifically asked not to bleach my hair too much cause my hair doesn't react to it very well based on the past experiences. All I asked was to lighten up my hair color a bit. Not sure how that happened but what he did was to bleach part of my hair (streaks) completely gray/white, then added slightly lighter color than my original hair color. Whaaaaaat. After I went t home, I noticed my hair was immediately started shedding as if it was melting. Like leaves fall from a tree in the fall. When I washed my hair next day, it was worse. Maybe it was misunderstanding or I didn't explain it very well, but I was very disappointed with the outcome :( 2nd time - Not sure why I thought I'd try this place again but I did. This time I went to see Atsuko. Ombre I asked for came out nicely. I was very happy about that. The process though - it wasn't much different from the first time I visited. Once again my hair was destroyed. (I need to learn the lesson now.) The worst part was that she used super fine animal hair brush to comb my hair when it was still wet after it's been treated by chemical. What it did was basically shredded my hair. I could see big chunk of my hair bunching up like felt on the brush. It looked clearly damaged terribly when my hair was completely dry (and 'styled') right after. I've never had this much spit ends after this appointment. ....And... I had to pay almost $300. Whaaaaaat. - - - I'm sure this salon would work for some people, but I will not go back there ever again or recommend it to anyone. A good news is hair always grows back, but for the money I spent I can only curl up and cry quietly. Personally I think you should take your money elsewhere if you want your hair treated by someone who has great/updated skills. - - - PS: Someone bothered private messaging me calling me I'm being a racist due to my spelling mistake. I went by one day and asked the lone person in there closing up shop what they charge for a hair cut and was told around $60!? and to come back tomorrow, that they take walk-ins, no problem. I went by the next day, and there were three people there, (there's no receptionist, so it's just a big wide space and chairs, no greeting, no receptionist, nada) and three customers (two over 60, one around 45-50) and one waiting (also +60 and waiting) who started talking to herself , so they offered her some tea. She asked for green, but they gave her chamomile--I suppose to calm her down? After about 20-30 minutes of sitting there, I was approached by the owner, who told me she's booked out "weeks" in advance and she doesn't take walk ins, but gave me a card and told me to call, and that she'd "refer" me to one of the people she rents a chair to. WHAT EVER! seems like lotsa hype. (I ended up going to Head in Albany, and paid $15...saved $45 and got a great cut, no wait. But...I didn't get a cup of chamomile tea.) I gave it 2 stars just because it seemed like an easy place to go (I live upstairs)...but I'll save $45 and travel 15 minutes, happily. And...Oh...I live right upstairs TOO--and it has not made me biased. read more

I called all the numbers in their website and no one answer or got back to me. I drop by to see if someone can help me and I was somehow greeted w/ this lady w/ big lips and smeared red lipstick. I told her I need a trim to even out my hair and she said coldly no one can help me and I have to go online to get an appointment, and see w/c stylist I can afford. She did not even bothered to offer me any opening for the day or week? She seem so snotty and I don't think that's good customer service at all. Since Anna has been cutting my hair (about 6 months now) every haircut has been perfect, and it changes a little each time, which is good because I like to mix it up every now and then. Since I'm a dude with short fine hair there's not much room for error and it can grow out to be kind-of disheveled looking. But Anna has managed to be creative while doing what fits for me, plus it grows out in a way where after weeks it still looks great. You can tell she is an expert at what she does, and loves doing it, so I am always comfortable with her and never doubt that she's going to make me look handsome ':) The salon she's working out of now (Shed) is very well designed, super comfortable, and everyone working there is so nice. They were even playing some music that I'm into (don't worry, nothing abrasive or annoying). Really, this place is very inviting and I can't say enough about the over-all aesthetic that's going on here. Also, the location is easy to get to and parking is a piece of cake. I can tell that Anna is happy working in the new space too. Conversations with her are always genuine and never forced, actually, I laugh a lot and have a good time when she cuts my hair. What I'm trying to say is: I highly recommend going to Shed and having Anna as your stylist. Update: I got another haircut from Anna at Shed. We were basically just hanging out having a good time and when all was said and done, my hair looked perfect. read more

I can always count on a spot on color as well. Perfection!!!! Anna- Whenever I want some beautiful balyage she's who I use. Which is this really cool way of highlighting. Also she is amazing at up do's and blowdrys. I always use her for all my events or a night out on the town for that extra special hair. I was in need of a haircut and was looking for a new salon/stylist. I read all the yelp reviews and decided that I wanted to come to Shed. Most salons are booked days, if not weeks in advance so I was not confident that they would see me on such short notice. I checked their website and was pleasantly surprised that you could make appointments online thru Schedulicity. After reading so many positive reviews on Edwin, I decided to make my appointment with him. (They have a $40 special on barber cuts on Tuesdays and Wednesdays...a real bonus if you'd asked me!). My appointment was for 10:25 for a 40 minute service. How impressed was I when Edwin called me to his chair at exactly 10:25 and I was out at exactly 11:05? VERY Impressive! As for the cut itself? It was fantastic! I showed Edwin a picture of what I wanted and he was dead on. This could've been the best haircut that I have ever received. He was thoughtful and took his time. I could tell that he truly loves his craft. I will definitely be coming back! Oh, forgot to mention how cool the salon is! It's a loft converted to a salon and the decor is Urban/rustic! I know, I know salons should be rated by their stylist and not the space itself, but the decor helped. Jen Auzenne has been doing my hair for more than 3 years now and she is AMAZING! When I first came to her I had horrible brassy blond highlights and she not only fixed my hair color, but now I feel like it gets better every time. My hair is very fine, and she puts in about twice as many foils as any other hairdresser I have ever gone to = she takes the time to make it perfect! It looks so natural I often forget how dark my hair really is, and even though I have a twin sister to remind me, people often don't believe we are twins because the hair color throws them off so much! I've seen about 8 colorists by now, and Jen is hands down the best! Also, she gives fantastic haircuts, that grow out BEAUTIFULLY! Each week I feel like I have a brand new style to work with! I also have to give Shed a big thumbs up. I followed Jen from SF to Shed in Emeryville, and I personally love the modern loft set up and relaxing environment. It's quick and easy to get there and nice to get out of the city and downtown parking and traffic issues. Great salon. I only counted 3 chairs in this place. I love that! It's calm and not at all chaotic. I went to see Anna before the July 4th weekend because she was the only stylist that had any availability within an 8 week time span. I have long thick hair and lots of it. The kind that makes Stylists squirm and start to do arm stretches when I walk in. Anna took me on like a champ. She was very sweet and asked a-lot of questions which I appreciated. My cut came out great and I'm grateful for the great service and relaxing experience. The only downside would be that she didn't take credit cards at the time. Luckily she doesn't charge an arm and a leg so I had enough cash. Otherwise I guess I could've wrote a check. So really this should be a 4 1/2 star rating but I'm rounding up because I had a great cut and a great time in this nice open airy salon. read more

I love haircuts from Atsuko! I have yet to have a haircut I was unhappy with in the last 10+ years. My experience has always been a high quality haircut that grows out beautifully. Where Atusko really shines is in wonderfully shaped shorter cuts, I always got a ton of compliments and again, they grew out so nicely -- none of that horribly awkward growth. Lately I've grown my hair out longer and Atusko shapes it and makes sure that it stays healthy enough to keep growing out. I am thankful to have Atsuko and not have to worry about whether I'll like my next haircut! read more
