Location/Atmosphere: it's located on a popular street in Hyde park so parking can be an issue on a busy weekend. As you walk into the building and down the stairs to the basement suite, you feel transported into a tranquil spa! You're greeted with calming music and a serene aroma that I couldn't make out. 4/5 Massage: I received a 1hr ​"Bettye's Body Butter Massage" by Bruce and I must say this was one of the top 5 massages I've ever had! He was super sweet and accommodating, making sure I was comfortable with every step. He even gave me some tips on stretching for my sore spots post workouts. I left feeling refreshed and super moisturized! 5/5 When scheduling, they'll take half the cost as a deposit and you'll pay the rest after your session. They have a variety of different packages and massages to choose from which is great so you can try something new each visit. Most def will be back! read more

I recently visited Betty O Day Spa, and I have to say, the establishment itself is beautiful and inviting. My massage therapist was excellent. He was very attentive, professional, and took such great care of me throughout my massage. I truly appreciated the care he provided. Unfortunately, my experience was overshadowed by an issue with my booking. I had a gift certificate specifically for a Hot Stone Massage, but when I arrived, my appointment had been entered as a Body Butter Massage. I brought the issue to the staff's attention, and my massage therapist also spoke with them about the situation. I understand that mistakes can happen, and I was told that the receptionist was responsible for entering the massage incorrectly. However, I was disappointed that after explaining the situation, no accommodation was offered--such as a discount toward a future visit or a complimentary massage. I want to emphasize that my massage therapist was wonderful and provided excellent service. My concern is with how the booking error was handled afterward. When a mistake is made by the establishment, I believe it is important to make the customer feel valued and to find a reasonable way to make the situation right. Betty O Day Spa is a beautiful establishment, and based on the quality of my massage therapist, I would consider returning. I just hope that in the future, greater care is taken when entering appointments and that customers are given better consideration when an error occurs. read more

They were very nice, but I know what my manicure and pedicure should like when done properly. My cuticles were not trimmed which made the manicure look very unprofessional and unfinished. Additionally, the nail polish selection was terrible! There were maybe 10-15 bottles of quick drying polishes to choose from and the slow drying polishes may have had the same amount. Interesting experience - wasn't great, wasn't horrible. The scheduling was simple to do online, and was appreciated. Hours before my appointment, they did call to let me know they were running about 15 minutes behind schedule, which was not a big deal for me. What ended up being a big deal was them actually running ultimately 45 minutes behind (including the 15 I was forewarned about). I unfortunately forgot that I did metered parking, and ended up forgetting to extend my time. Hopefully I didn't get a ticket, but I do recommend that the front desk remind their customers about parking if they are running late after arrival. My therapist did apologize for the delay and explained that the scheduling system did not allow for blocks of down time to clean and prep in between sessions. I found it odd that the front desk strongly suggested that I pay for the rest of my massage before the massage started, but I think that was because I was the last client for the day. Whatever the reason, it made me feel uncomfortable. My therapist Bruce did a great job with my massage, and was professional and made sure the pressure was to my liking. About 3/4 into my session though, there was a loud knock on the door to discuss something with him; it was not acknowledged afterwards at all, but it did dampen the relaxing vibe a bit. If I were to go back, I would make sure to schedule early in the morning to avoid a possible time delay. read more

A staple in Hyde Park for decades, I always think of Bettye O. before I think of going anywhere else. When I was younger and her spa was in Harper Court, we would always buy gift certificates for my mother, because going there to relax was her favorite thing to do. Last year we got my mom a massage and I got a pedicure, both were pretty great. Just know that if you get a mani or pedi, they are both natural, meaning no acrylics, gels, etc. That being said, I was in need of a wax and this spa was the first thing that came to mind. I'm happy that I didn't let Olivia's review deter me, as it seemed really scary. I was able to book an appointment the night before with no problem and found parking right away. Now the appt was for a brazillian wax (tmi) and it also said 15 minutes. I was used to getting waxed at Completely Bare, where it usually took about 30 minutes to get everything done. The esthetician, Laura was great. She was crazy fast and you knew she knew what she was doing. I was scared because the last time I got waxed (somewhere else) I was left bleeding, but that happens. Laura used muslin and wax to do everything, so that might be why my skin didn't rip off! Anyway, everything went well and I'm happy I don't have to shop around for a waxer in this new (after 20 years!) city. read more

Full disclosure: This happened 10 months ago, but it keeps coming up because I've been telling my friends this horror story, in the "can you believe this?!" kind of way, since last Spring. I'm new to YELPing, but I honestly can't shake this experience. I've been getting waxed for the last 8 years, I'm not always the most consistent and I've often had waxers tell me that I should come in more consistently. As a result I expect a certain level of pain, and I normally have some light bleeding (I also tend to have pretty thick hair, so it's not unusual). I've had my fair share of bad and/or painful waxing experiences. THIS time however - and, forgive me, I forget the waxer's name - but she straight-up took skin off. Like a whole strip of skin, y'all. There was bleeding (obviously), but I wasn't aware of the extent of the damage until I felt the scab the next day. She kept dabbing the area, and she told me that she would just leave the tissue paper there to stop the bleeding and that it would be kept in place by my underwear. I told her that I wasn't actually wearing any underwear that day, so she SCOTCH-TAPED IT TO MY PUSSY. At the time, I was like "oh, um okay." But looking back, I'm like... y'all didn't have a bandaid? If she had apologized, been really about the fact that skin had come up, and found me, i dunno, a bandaid (?!?) - I would have honestly let it be. But I paid full price, and - and, in case you missed this detail - walked out of my appointment with tissue paper taped to my vulva. Very disappointing experience, and I've had better experiences at Jasmin Waxing and Spa. read more

I just have to post a rave review for this place. I had the hydrotherapy bath and a massage. It was absolutely wonderful. This bath is the whole sHaBAngBANG, you hear me? Tyna is so caring and highly attentive as she assists with the baths. It's just divine and sooo worth it. I was like am I seriously paying for a bath I can do from home??? But YEA, this is waaay different and I'm so glad I got to have the experience. The massage was AHHMAZING. Bruce makes sure you're very comfortable and it feels like he enjoys the art of massage. I myself am a massage therapist but I really needed some attention myself. I've been to BettyO in the past, but I had never tried the bath or massage before. Usually get great service but today not so great. I brought my 13 year old daughter to get her first facial mainly for congestion on her nose and forehead. The esthetician never asked me as her parent about any concerns and just proceeded with the facial. My daughter came out with the same blackheads on her nose and whiteheads on her forehead. She told me the esthetician said the steamer is broken. Had I known this I would have rescheduled when they got it fixed or done to a spa with working equipment. I addressed my concerns at the front desk with the receptionist, a Caucasian female but she said "sorry". Service quality and customer service has really gone downhill at this place. I just had a brow wax. It was great. Laura was my technician, and she did a great job. It's been my experience that I when I go to a brow place for the first time, the technician is very nervous, but Laura knew what she was doing. I didn't have to correct her when it came to the shape or ask her to take more hair off. I'll definitely be back. Tip: Bring cash for any service under $20. Update: The state of my brows can make or break how hot I feel. I liked to get my brows waxed every two weeks but Laura informed that this isn't good for my brows. She stated I could go every 4-6 weeks. As someone who would get their brows done every 14 days, this was a big change but I figured it's best to maintain my body's ability to keep giving me brow hair rather than give in to vanity. The fact that Laura gave me such good advice and actually gave a (you fill in the blank) about my long-term brow health will keep me coming back. My daughter told me about this place awhile ago but recently I went with my sister and I was pleasantly surprised at how the spa transferred you into another world especially when I saw the outside of the building. I believe I had Laura and she did a good job with my services and even when I expected the areas where she did the waxing and was not pleased with it she quickly fixed the problem with a smile and made sure I was pleased before I left. The prices on many of the services are reasonable. My sister and I had the first appointments so no one else was in the spa with us so that made it kinda of cool. After a long week of dance and Yoga, my back/neck decided to go crazy and I was in desperate need of relief. My regular massage therapist was not avaiable and my backups where not answering the call :-(. After a quick search I found Bettye O Day and made a call. They fit me in and Bruce did an excellent job! I am an old-head of massage therapy and go a minimum of once a month and would like to go weekly, so when I say he was good I know of what I speak. I have fallen in Love with this spa. I have head about it and read about it for years and so I decided to treat myself when I was in Chicago last week. Well let me tell you that the spa is sooo serene. From the moment I walked in, I felt relaxed I loved the dimly lit reception area and the mellow music. I received the Bettye O. Signature Facial (I swear my skin feels as smooth as a babys bottom now), the Sea Algae Bath (I just remember thinking..."so this is what heaven feels like") The Betty Body Butter Massage (this was my favorite ...if you go request Bruce to do your massage...I had never had a massage by a man so i wasn't sure if i was going to feel comfortable but he was so good and i felt at ease) and i finished my day off with a mani pedi. I had a great experience here! I did the essentials package with the signature facial & spa mani/pedi. As soon as I walked in, I enjoyed the peaceful & elegant ambiance. Tyna was my nail technician & wonderful; she took her time, was thorough, gentle & a great conversationalist! I overheard that I was Michelle's last facial for the day but she still took her time & my skin feels great after! She gave me some great advice for how to take care of my skin even though the spa products weren't in my budget she directed me how to find what I can afford. The ambiance is relaxing and lovely. I had a 1 hour aromatherapy massage with Bruce. I received a nice little gift as a first time customer which was unexpected and the front desk receptionist was very pleasant. Re Bruce, he had the perfect pressure, technique and energy. I didn't really smell the scent I chose until a few seconds at the end and there was a constant cd skipping sound to the right of me, also I think an eye cover for the last half would have been nice. I have had a hot stone here before and was not impressed in the slightest because it was not a true hot stone massage but some mixed, made-up version of hot stone massage. I was taken by surprise that 1. I was not informed that the therapist was a male (not that I care) but I like to know. 2. I sat in a towel in this open room as people walked by and I was waiting for the therapist. Very uncomfortable. 3. The space reminded me of a massage school where there were not separate rooms but draped off areas which lack privacy needed during a massage. 4. What kind of therapist swipes their hands across your chest area at the end of the massage? This was very uncomfortable to me. It took me by surprise. Getting a Brazilian wax is always a bit nerve-wracking, so I read plenty of reviews before selecting Bettye O. Day Spa. Laura was my technician, and she is mentioned in so many reviews that I was relieved and expected a good experience. I found her a bit curt, although not exactly unfriendly--just a bit more businesslike than I would have liked given my position of vulnerability. I was surprised when she used soft wax rather than hard--on the bikini area, you want hard wax. Trust me. This was the worst pain I've ever experienced in a wax. Not only that, I got home to find patches of hair she'd missed! What a terrible experience! One tip if you do decide to visit: while they do accept cards, you can't use a card fora tip--be sure to bring cash for the tip if not for the whole service. read more

I got a gift certificate for $175 as a present. I finally got around to scheduling a message. They were nice and let me use the certificate even though it had expired. The massage was HORRIBLE. The guy giving me the massage (Bruce) continuously moved my legs to a splayed position and rubbed my inner thighs along the line of my underwear, as well as in between my breasts and "massaged" my butt extensively. When I called (two days later -- at the time I just wanted to get out of there) I asked to speak to the manager. When I asked for the money back, Bettye said that gift certificates were non-refundable, but offered me facial. THIS IS WHERE IT GETS BAD She told me that I should have said something at the time, and that I had signed a waiver stating that I would do so. When I told her that I felt too scared and threatened at the time to say "stop" she just told me that it was my fault and because of the waiver, there was nothing she could do. When I told her that I would write a bad review, she blamed me for "ruining the business." I tried to explain that I just didn't want other people to have the same experience, but she insisted that I was just being spiteful. I have been going to this spa on and off for years and it never disappoint me. I went for a facial on Saturday February 25th. Very prompt when I arrived, the woman who did my facial greeted me right when I changed into my robe. The facial was excellent, very relaxing, suggested what facial I did for my skin type. The end results was great and my face still has the glow from when I left the spa. I scheduled my next facial for April. If you are thinking about it please make your appointment. FYI the massages are great as well didn't get one this particular day but have had them twice here and Bruce is wonderful.
