Lacto-Fermentation Class; Making Sauerkraut
Carrie G.

This Community Center and the classes and programs it hosts is one of the best things about living in Bayview! The Milwaukee Recreation Department offers a plethora of classes nearly year round (there is a brief break around the December holidays). One day classes in xxxxx or xxxx will give you an overview. Fitness classes like pilates and yoga are pretty great too. The instructors are all certified and many teach at private clubs and schools. Each one that I've encountered has been super enthusiastic about teaching their craft. At approximately $3 per one hour they are a great deal! But the real hidden gems in the course listings (milwaukeerecreation.net) are the cooking classes. Most of them are one night for three hours, a few are two nights for a couple of hours. Depending on the subject prices are $10-$30 per class. I recently took the Lacto-Fermentation class at the recommendation of a friend that took the same class earlier this summer. The instructor, Christina Ward, is a Master Preserver, which means the State says she really knows her stuff. And indeed, she does. Our project for the evening was to make large batches of kimchi and sauerkraut and learn enough to take it home and finish the process. Mission accomplished. Earlier this week both batches were finished and I have large jars of both in the fridge. Pretty cool to me able to say I made it myself. I can't wait to take more classes this fall, and hopefully I will see some of you there!

Somehow this lake escaped my attention the first 6 years we lived in Wisconsin. What a wonderful…read morespot! There's a gorgeous park like setting leading up to the lake. There's a wonderful picnic area and and plenty of spots for enjoying the views of the lake. The lake itself is good for swimming, boating, kayaking, or paddleboarding. It truly is a great spot for a little bit of everything. We enjoyed a wonderful walk around the park area and along the lakefront and made a note to come back another day for some on the water fun. They are popular and so parking nearby (though there's additional lots a distance away) can be difficult on a holiday (we tried on the 4th of July) but for a normal weekday or weekend, there's plenty of parking and plenty of space for fun. Little Muskego Lake offers a lovely oasis for recreation in the Milwaukee metro. Get to it!

There are swimmers, kayaks, fishermen, waterski users and boaters. It's a fun lake for fishing until the leisure boaters start zipping around in watercraft and jet skis. There's "no wake" zones for a reason and 80 percent of people seem to completely ignore the signs and buoys. If you see an anchored boat, give them a little space. And if you happen to be the random car that slowly drives through or parks in the middle of the boat launch with no regard to trailered vehicle, be aware of what's going on please. It's a hive of activity and I'm sure nobody wants to get hurt.
