    Lacto-Fermentation Class; Making Sauerkraut
    Carrie G.

This Community Center and the classes and programs it hosts is one of the best things about living in Bayview! The Milwaukee Recreation Department offers a plethora of classes nearly year round (there is a brief break around the December holidays). One day classes in xxxxx or xxxx will give you an overview. Fitness classes like pilates and yoga are pretty great too. The instructors are all certified and many teach at private clubs and schools. Each one that I've encountered has been super enthusiastic about teaching their craft. At approximately $3 per one hour they are a great deal! But the real hidden gems in the course listings (milwaukeerecreation.net) are the cooking classes. Most of them are one night for three hours, a few are two nights for a couple of hours. Depending on the subject prices are $10-$30 per class. I recently took the Lacto-Fermentation class at the recommendation of a friend that took the same class earlier this summer. The instructor, Christina Ward, is a Master Preserver, which means the State says she really knows her stuff. And indeed, she does. Our project for the evening was to make large batches of kimchi and sauerkraut and learn enough to take it home and finish the process. Mission accomplished. Earlier this week both batches were finished and I have large jars of both in the fridge. Pretty cool to me able to say I made it myself. I can't wait to take more classes this fall, and hopefully I will see some of you there!

Those of us from Chicago are familiar with the Polish war hero, and this beautiful park is an appropriate tribute in a town that owes much to our Polish immigrants. It's a big park, and it's pretty well maintained though the County has trouble staffing lifeguards for the pool so it's often closed. There are no Polish restaurants around here but nearby is an Eastern European grocery store if you want to pack a picnic or there are many good Mexican restaurants near by to get take out for al fresco dining.

He was trained in military engineering but he was also a passionate man who loved liberty. When the American Revolutionary War broke out, the 30 year old Kosciuszko came to the colonies to help out. He spent six years as part of the Continental Army, working as an engineer to fortify American facilities and also fought on the line. He befriended Thomas Jefferson. At the end of the Revolutionary War, the grateful Americans gave him a plot of land in Ohio and named him a General. He returned to Poland but left word that upon his death, his American holdings should be sold and the proceeds used to free and educate slaves. (That was a pretty radical concept in the 18th Century!) As Poland was an inviting target for invading armies, Kosciuszko returned to the Polish army and fought to repulse the invading Russians in 1792. The Polish king surrendered, Kosciuszko was wounded and captured. He was exiled in 1796 and was never able to return to his homeland. A hero in both America and Poland, Thaddeus Kosciuszko was a central figure in Polish communities all over the world. A statue of him can be found in any city with a large Polish community, and Milwaukee was no exception. A collection was made to raise funds to commission Gaetano Trentanove to create a statue of the Polish hero. Gaetano Trentanove was born in Florence, Italy on February 21, 1858. By way of Chicago's 1893 Columbian Exposition, Trentanove wound up in Milwaukee where he had a studio and taught at the Layton School of Art. Trentanove statues can be found around the world but also in Milwaukee's Wahl Park, Oshkosh and Lancaster, Wisconsin. In 1903, Trentanove's statue of Kosciuszko was cast in Florence and shipped to Milwaukee in two pieces - the horse and Kosciuszko, to be reunited in Lincoln Avenue Park, in the center of the Polish community of Milwaukee's south side. (The park was renamed in honor of General Kosciuszko about the same time the monument was placed here.) The years have passed, the community has changed from Polish to Hispanic, but Kosciuszko remains. The statue was showing its age. Patina hid many details, damage was causing deterioration, his spurs were broken off and his scabbard was missing. The monument was in need of some serious restoration help. A group was formed to that end, called the "Restore the Kosciuszko Monument." The group documented the statue and collected the funds needed to restore the statue. The monument underwent a thorough restoration in 2013. The bronze statue was removed and taken to a specialist in Ohio, where the patina was removed, repairs were made and missing parts were recreated. The missing scabbard was located. Meanwhile, the pedestal was cleaned and polished, in anticipation of the return of General Kosciuszko. See: http://www.rkmmilwaukee.org/ for the story of the restoration. Incidentally, most people pronounce his name as "kozz-ee-ESS-ko" but my Polish friends taught me long ago to call him "ka-ZHOOSH-ko" which I still endeavor to do.

The instructor Baobi Noel has a very warm, inviting voice and instantly made me feel comfortable. This yoga session was inside the Pabst brewery and hence all the photos of it. I captured the actual event with my eyes and hence don't have any photos of the sound bath session. Baobi guided us thorough an hour of yin yoga taking us through the different poses, making it very important for us to know that this session is our practice and to take poses as it feels comfortable. That coupled with sound bath maestro- Jordan, this whole session transitions one to a whole new state of mind. The combo of the sounds and vibrations of the quartz bowls, metal bowls and the gongs were in perfect harmony and i was pretty much put into a state of blissful trans and I had a blank mind (which does not happen often). I emerged from this session refreshed, grateful and with peace. Also tried their goat yoga and I absolutely recommend it. I recommend everyone to check out their sound bath class for sure. Can't wait to try their other classes to. ‍

The meditation and flow classes held by Jessica and Baobi were incredibly relaxing and body opening. I'll be looking forward to the next event.

I knew I needed a gym that could provide community and make working out something I looked forward to, especially after historically having structure in my workouts due to sports. The squad of trainers, the variety, the pop-ups - there's truly something for everyone and every version of how I'm feeling. Total supportive zone with women from every walk of life - unbeatable and so empowering. Shape Up Shoppe made it so easy to get into a routine and actually be excited about working out... plus it's affordable and I already see noticeable results after hardly a month. 100x over recommend. I have tried many different gyms and this one feels like a community. The knowledge that Julie (owner) and the other trainers have about fitness, nutrition, etc is remarkable and allows them to give personalized feedback depending on your fitness goal! You can tell that the owner and staff truly care about your fitness goals. Unlike other gyms, if you miss a class, they encourage you to make it up and try a different class rather than losing the money. Cardio Complete - these classes are a great full body workout with routines that each target different muscle groups. Incorporating bodyweight exercises, dumbbells, jump ropes and more. As someone who grew up dancing, these classes are especially fun for me as I enjoy the aerobics style routines. I saw results in my strength, cardio and muscle tone very shortly after joining these classes. Boxing - I am not a consistent member of the boxing classes, but have done a few drop-in classes and got a great workout! If you are looking for a fast paced, fun and tiring workout I would definitely recommend trying a boxing class. During the class you will switch between heavy hanging bags, speed bags, headache bags as well as individual target mitts with a trainer. Pilates Slide - this is a newer class offered and am hoping that they continue it. I have done pilates at other studios prior and nothing compares to this class. It is a low impact workout but is sure to leave you sweating and feeling toned! If you do not feel like doing a class, they also have a gym on the lower level with cardio equipment, free weights, and machines. I highly recommend giving the Shape Up Shoppe a try and guarantee that you will fall in love with it like I did!
