We have officially been kayaking with Milwaukee Kayak Company for 5 years. I wash shocked to see I have never written a review because we are dedicated clients of this phenomenal company! In the height of the summer, you can rent kayaks from 3 docks: Jerry's Dock right downtown, Schlitz Park, and the Twisted Fisherman. Schlitz park is fun because it has an outdoor space with giant games like Jenga and Connect 4, as well as delicious local beers on tap! Our personal favorite spot is Jerry's Dock downtown because it is the most accessible to the stops along the river and has the advantage of being downstream on the way back. You can usually rent a single or tandem kayak. While we exclusively for singles during the first few years, we've started getting tandems recently because it enables us to reach all of our stops easier. Our favorite dock stops include Lakefront Brewery for beer and cheese curds and Twisted Fisherman for Pina Coladas. The prices are accessible and the service from staff is always impeccable. All this to say: there is a reason that Milwaukee Kayak Company has earned our service the past five years: they are the all around best! If you haven't kayaked on the MKE river with Milwaukee Kayak Company, we highly recommended getting out on the river before the season ends in October! My friends were visiting for a weekend and wanted to try something new that I hadn't done yet, so we found MKC! They have multiple locations and a number that is monitored for calls/texts. We were able to text pretty last minute to ask for a booking same-day. You can rent for 2 or 4 hours, and I think they also have some event-type (sunset/sunrise/nighttime) rentals. We booked it for 2 hours because we ... truly did not think we would make it past an hour since we were tired from the night before but we were COMMITTED. So we got our sunscreen, swimmies and sunnies on and made our way there. We did the Schlitz Park location which had a adjacent empty business building lot (on a weekend) with easy parking. We already paid online and were able to sign our waivers, get in our lifevests and get on the kayaks in speedy time. If you're looking to have a leisure ride with some stops along the way, do the 4 hour rental. You can stop at Lakefront Brewery (which is probably the most popular spot) and some other places for a drink or food in between. The price difference between the two is like $5. Also, the Milwaukee River is incredibly dirty so... thank goodness MKC's kayaks are a little wider than the smaller ones I'm used to, so the chances of tipping are LOW. This is not a body of water I want by body falling into. Anyways, 100% recommend MKC for your kayaking or paddleboarding needs! read more

So for those of us that live in MKE what better way to spend the summer than obviously getting on the water? Well unfortunately for me I had to have surgery for my shoulder which was going to take me out for most of the summer so I suggested that we go kayaking the day before my surgery. I mean what better way to spend your last bit of summer than having someone else basically paddle for you as you sit in the kayak? Lol. Anyway we ended up finding this place based on Yelp reviews and decided to do a tandem kayak which was actually really great because we rented it for 4 hours although we only really used it for about three because I started having a sore shoulder. This place is great, life jackets are included with the rentals and yes... you must wear those while you're in the kayak. But the best part is along the river you can stop at all the little public docks where you can stop and get some snacks and enjoy some of the breweries along the way. We also packed water and a couple of sandwiches but we didn't eat them and much to my surprise I actually fell in trying to get into the kayak when we started. The staff was very nice and I didn't know what I was doing because it's been so long since I've been in a kayak. Instead of trying to sit before I put my feet in to get in the kayak I tried to stand and get in from a standing position, which I highly do not recommend unless you want to go butt over tea kettle and fall into the river. Thankfully where the kayak trip started it wasn't too gross in the water but if you're somewhere farther down you might have ended up in trash. A couple of the staff members helped me out of the water and grabbed my hat and my waterproof backpack that I had brought with me. For these reasons I would obviously suggest bringing either a dry bag or waterproof bag of some sort however; I will state if you bring a waterproof backpack it's probably not going to be waterproof if you go head first and the backpack is a roll up backpack LOL! Fortunately it kept our food and everything pretty dry but just keep that in mind in case you're the clumsy type like me. Along with the kayak rental and the life jackets they also will give you a map of where the river is and no, you can't go into the lake that is strictly forbidden. I didn't understand why at the beginning but as soon as we got closer towards that side of the river I learned very quickly you don't want to be over there. Once you're done the process is pretty easy to turn everything in and they also have stickers as well that you can take and put on a nalgene bottle or one of your Yeti bottles if you like. I can't wait until my shoulder is healed and I can get back out on the water and try kayaking again. This is now my go-to spot for all things kayaks and MKE especially since the price wasn't bad. It was $90 for the tandem for 4 hours if I remember correctly. read more

First visit to Milwaukee Kayak Company (MKC) was great! You can make a reservation a few days before by calling and leaving a message- state your arrival time and boat needs, then someone will text you back to confirm. So easy. MKC is across from the big yellow Next Act Theatre. There's a small parking lot, and plenty of street parking. Get there early to sign a waiver, get your lifejacket and get a quick overview of the river and your self guided tour options. Service here is so helpful. I recommend heading to the iconic Hoan Bridge for an amazing view and some great pics, then doing the downtown path if you've never been. Rental is for 4 hours, and you can dock at any public dock. We hopped off at the Peck Pavilion for an art fair. You can request a dry bag for your stuff, and I recommend wearing some swimsuit bottoms because you'll get wet from paddling. I'm looking forward to taking up the whole 4 hours and doing a little bar hopping next time! This is a relaxing activity, but also a good workout. MKC, for the win! read more

Such a fun activity!! My friend and I rented 2 single kayaks for 2 hours which was about $25/pp. The staff were super friendly and helped us get in and out of the kayaks onto the river. They also supply the life vests and have dry bags for personal items which is nice. It's also pet friendly too so if you wanted to bring your dog you could. I had visitors in Milwaukee for the weekend, and this was the perfect activity to break up our weekend of eating & drinking around town. We made a reservation at the Schlitz Park location, which was very convenient for us to get to and a little cheaper than the Third Ward location. Wonderful friendly staff, easy access to the river, super fun way to spend four hours sight seeing from the river view. We took out four tandem kayaks. With a group of 9 year olds. Went up as far as Lake Front Brewery. Easy paddle and a lots of fun. The river was pretty clam, even going up river was not bad. Afterwards we docked at the Ale House for lunch. I stopped in an hour before closing (sunset) and tried out one of the paddleboards. The owner and her father provided great new equipment along with how-to and safety instructions to make the experience enjoyable. How's the water? It's dirty and there's lots of crud floating. If you're new to this, you're going to take a swim so be prepared. It's worth it. They have quite a few kayaks but only a few paddleboards. We shopped around to compare prices and what was included each Kayaking company along the river but Milwaukee Kayak Co stood out from their beautiful riverfront setup, friendly staff assisting in every aspect so all you need to do is get in and out of the stabilized kayak. They include dry packs, free sticker, assisting customers in and out without embarrassment or incident, very calm and genuine happy energy from the staff. The kayaks were in clean and great condition. The paddles are of good quality for all users even those with more experience. The location down river is great for hitting multiple areas. Staff gave us a water proof map and gave us suggestions on approximate times it would take to get to specific spots. They let us take our entire backpack which fit inside the kayak without any issue. A single kayak for four hours only costs $35. This was way less than what we were expecting! A small group of us went down and got some kayaks. First we rode up to Lake Front Brewery. Loved renting kayaks at MKC! It was my and my boyfriend's first time ever kayaking, and we had a great time! They teach you how to do everything and provide a useful map of the different routes. We were out for 3 hours, no problem. Definitely important to go on a good weather day, especially for beginners like us! Plenty of room to sit comfortably and have a small bag or two with personal belongings. The scenery was gorgeous and it's such a cool way to see the city from a new perspective. The tour consisted of showing our group various parts of the river while discussing the conservation efforts being made by local groups. A must do ! I make kayaking the river a priority of mine at least a couple times a year . MKC is the only place I would do it through . I suggest making a reservation with them a day or so in advance. If you have a large group reserve a week or more in advance. You can rent single or double seat kayaks, canoes and standup paddle boards . Things are rented for up to 4 hours but if their not busy and you let them know you can keep them out a little longer . She is super accommodating with everything from start to finish . They have laminated maps of the river you can attach to the front of the kayak to help you navigate around . There are also water proof bags provided for you to keep your personal belongings in . Once you're on the river you can explore the city away . A lot of the restaurants allow you to dock and you can grab a bite to eat/ drink . MKC provides a rope for you to tie up with . I suggest going the route past the ale house and down to the harp . Paddling along water street really lets you see a real glimpse into Milwaukee and all its architecture. Great experience! I booked a canoe a few days in advance via email. She responded quickly and confirmed the reservation. It is a little off the beaten path, so listen to Siri. There are signs directing you to a grass/gravel area to park, and you walk back to the water. They have two large tents set up with the equipment (ie. kayaks, canoes, lifejackets etc). The woman who runs it was very accommodating and nice, explaining the different kinds of kayaks and offering dry bags for my wallet/cell phone. Each boat has a laminated map of the waterways through the city, and specials are offered for paddling up to some of the restaurants on the water. She will walk you through the different ways you can explore, and you are given 4 hours. Great experience, and I'm bummed I didn't try before the season ran out! My friend set up a fun day of kayaking for 6 of us, and we showed up to MKC at 11am. They are located just past the Third Ward, with ample free street parking nearby. When we arrived, we signed waivers and paid individually, then were given life jackets and waterproof bags and set up in our kayaks. I was a little nervous to kayak for the first time, especially turning, but they gave us a little tutorial and helped us get in the water, and it went smoothly. They also provide a map and recommendations of where to go. We started at Twisted Fisherman, which was not a scenic route, then headed up the Milwaukee river, which was a beautiful route. We've been on boat tours of the Milwaukee River before but never one by kayak. This is a fun way to see Milwaukee and to get some exercise to boot. $35 for 4 hours is not bad. We had an ideal summer day for this adventure. The folks at MKC were friendly, very helpful, and enthusiastic. We paddled as far as the Lakefront Brewery but did not stop for a beer. $30 for 4 hours of kayaking on the Milwaukee River- the actual experience? Priceless! My friend and I had heard about it and got there expecting to kayak all the way down the river for the full 4 hours but then we realized we could dock our kayaks and grab a drink at some of the restaurant down the river. So a little bit of day drinking at Lakefront Brewery and Milwaukee Ale House in between kayaking made for a pretty fantastic summer day. I'm a first time kayaker and the ladies who pushed us off gave me some good advice and I made it the full 4 hours without falling in the river, although I did take on some water at one point. I would recommend wearing a swimsuit in case you tip some water into your kayak. They graciously provide you with a waterproof bag for your belongings- phone (because let's face it, you'll probably take a selfie), ID, and card (for drinks of course)- and let me tell you, the bags are most definitely water proof (thank goodness)! Perfect Saturday activity for our first visit to Milwaukee! We made a reservation a week ahead for a random kayak (2-person kayak) via voicemail and they confirmed by sending us a text. When we arrived for our 1:30 reservation, we signed waivers, strapped on life vests, and headed down to the dock. They went over a map of our possible routes (there's a few different options) and pointed out that we also have a map on our kayak incase we need to refer back to it. The kayak didn't have a lot of extra space in it (of course) - but our dry bag (provided by MKC) fit in with both of us just fine. We docked about 45 minutes down the river at Lakefront Brewery (which was extremely crowded - so docking and exiting the kayak was harder than expected and probably amusing for the crowd on the patio.) And later we docked again at The Harp, which was 100% easier. Also, don't forget.. @ Lakefront, you can bring in your kayak map and get a discount on your food purchase.
