Came to a matinee play. Parking was plentiful (& free) on a Sunday. The venue itself is small and the seats weren't comfy at all nor much seat space. Any view is good in the house. An older crowd that appeared to be pretty snobby (older lady Just stared straight at us so I kindly obliged until she finally looked away). Staff member was kind of eccentric and I believe he was trying to be humorous but came across rather odd and condescending to us. Not sure I'll be back for another production. read more

The Beverly Hills Playhouse is a wonderful location for an intimate setting for a live performance. Parking isn't terribly challenging, and the venue, itself, is really charming. Beverly Hills Playhouse is a class, an outlet, a community, an artistic gym. Best Scene Study I've done in LA, and I've studied at Howard Fine, Chubbuck, and a couple others. Here's the difference: Every prominent acting school has by the nature of its survival a dogmatic teacher/proprietor that defines its brand and ethic. However, there's an inherent conflict of interest between the existence of that overarching persona and the wellbeing/advancement of students. In short, there's usually some snakeoil method or internal process being sold, and the teacher usually adopts a performative, maestro type role that exists to create an imbalanced power dynamic and culture of fear, so the snakeoil cannot be questioned. Beverly Hills Playhouse, under the ownership of Allen Barton, doesn't have even a whiff of this corrosive dogma, or cultish adherence. It's because Barton isn't a flashy Stella Adler wannabe, he isn't a Stanislavski revisionist or a Meisner offshoot. He's a reasonable, traditional man who runs the school with a logical, practical modesty that conjures up perhaps the most East Coast feel out of all the major LA acting teachers. He doesn't have a Barton-branded method or pseudo-therapizing way of getting 'inside' a character- which is totally refreshing. His main point is that narrative is greater than arbitrary choices or safe modalities, and that everything an actor does has to be in service of the story. It's quite a reasonable point! The result ripples out into the culture, which has an exuberant work ethic, openness, and willingness to try all sorts of exciting styles of performance. The only time anyone gets skewered is when they are incredibly lazy, and it doesn't happen often. I have been studying at BHP for 2 years now and I have made such great progress , booking jobs .., and found a great community of actors that became family . I was excited to be able to attend the morning class because most acting schools scheduled their classes at night and working in the restaurant industry wouldn't let me work on my craft I do appreciate the option and I am way more efficient to study in the morning. The School has 2 theaters to work on scene and what find very convenient is the self tape room to be able to tape my audition with amazing lighting without stressing or worrying of setting up . EASILY THE BEST ACTING SCHOOL IN LA. First off, calling BHP just an acting school is a disservice to what it actually is; it is a place where artists come together to support each other and work towards... I really wanted to say excellence here, but that's subjective and that is not the point. What really happens in class is fearless acting in a safe environment. And that safety means everything. That safety of possible "failure" (as we actors always like to call it in our minds) allows you to want to do things you would never want to do and that is so important for your growth. Sure, we can all do self-portrait versions of ourselves on self tapes and maybe, just maybe book that co-star, guest star, or even a recurring. But then you realize those particular goals are pretty arbitrary, much like the way this industry functions. Kobe Bryant once said, "Those times when you get up early and you work hard, those times when you stay up late and you work hard, those times when you don't feel like working, you're too tired, you don't want to push yourself, but you do it anyway. Took the audition workshop with Art Cohan and it was amazing. Great for learning how to analyze audition materials and how to perform your best in the audition room and in self tapes. Great refresher for actors who have experienced in person auditions and so much information for actors that are starting out or want to make the most of their self tapes and auditions. I studied Acting for Film at the New York Film Academy, Los Angeles. This is where I trained with a few noteworthy acting instructors/coaches to learn Stanislavski, Meisner, Adler, Hagen, Crowe, Linklater, Knight, Chekhov, Boal, Tarkovsky, Boleslavsky, Waxberg, Shakespeare, Comey, Johnstone and more.... To develop my own techique(s) and/or method(s) for success as an Actress. Earlier this year, I graduated with my Master of Fine Arts in Acting for Film and thought to myself, "Securing acting work is simple". Well, I was referred by a talent agent to take some more classes at the Beverly Hills Playhouse as I continue to seek acting work. I met Ajarae Coleman, Admissions Director at BH Playhouse and she sold me on 8-weeks of Acting Classes: Scene Study. The Beverly Hills Playhouse is an Acting School that opened its doors in 1978. The founder Milton Katselas was a director, producer, acting instructor and acting coach. He studied with Elia Kazan and Lee Stratesberg at Actors Studio. I just completed an 8-week Scene Study: Orientation Class at BH Playhouse based upon methods utilized by Katselas. There were two (2) books that were given to me before the start of classes: 1) Acting Class, Take A Seat by Milton Katselas 2) Dreams into Action by Milton Katselas The work is completely left to the responsibility of the students. So, I had to read the books before classes started. I read the books and purchased an audiobook to ensure complete understanding of the acting beliefs. There were exercises too. However, I completed them through the course of the 8-weeks. Acting Masters all develop there own perspectives on presentation. So, the new method was familiar, because all acting techniques seem to be derived from the same place: Constantin Stanislavsky's Trilogy (or what I call the Drama Bible). BH Playhouse asks that instructors and students to stick to Milton Katselas methodologies and check lists to ensure thats personas for roles and possibly even accents are built through tried and true techniques. During the course of 8-weeks, I completed and Environmental. This placed me in a casting for script roles: * Kramer vs Kramer (1979), Role: Joanna Kramer * Jesus Hopped the A Train ( 2000), Role: Mary Jane Hanrahan * Bridesmaids (2011), Role: Megan Price * All About Eve, Role (1950): Eve Harrington * Butterflies Are Free (1972), Role: Mrs. Baker I completed scenes from the first three (3) plays/movies on the list, and a monologue from Gypsy. So, I had two (2) weeks to work on a scripted scene. Every presentation was followed by an insightful critique to improve oneself as an actor. I had a total of five (5) critiques by three (3) Instructors currently working in the Entertainment Industry. Each of my scene partners brought their own uniqueness to the table, which makes them unforgettable to me. I made some more acquaintances and friends. Thus, adding to my ongoing bunch of aspiring actors, directors, models, screenwriters, professor and etc... friendship relationships not all on Yelp. Also, during my 8weeks at BH Playhouse.... I attended an EventBrite Workshop called Actors: How To Avoid The Cutting Room Floor with Jordan Goldman A.C.E. This experience at the Beverly Hills Playhouse seems to have given me a sense of strength that empowers my acting abilities and boosts my self-confidence levels. It definitely was a learning experience. And Milton Katselas techniques do work, if you understand and apply them to scripted roles. The Beverly Hills Playhouse gets three stars, because.... The classes were large. So much so that I had to go to Stage Managers (student not Teaching Assistants) with questions or problems instead of directly to Instructors. The replies were mostly all just refer to the books and you'll figure it out. During my own critiques instructors have asked for me to reread chapters versus explaining particular topics in-depth. It's about not placing blame. It's about truly grasping and understanding for a particular situation. I don't like being told not to have questions. It's a learning process that needs to be addressed with more attention. Also, I had to utilize LineBuddy, hire line-runners and meet with friends to help me with my acting work, because some scene partners had too many things to do to even dedicate a minimal amount of time (1-hour) everyday to rehearsals. I do like that the Beverly Hills Playhouse concentrates on one method for the whole school. Everyone around me seemed to have the same enthusiasm and center of interest for their acting. And I am happy to have learned about Milton Katselas acting techniques for discovering and developing my own acting powers through the use of my imagination coupled with testing choices. read more

Ciara G. invited me to see Engagement here at the Beverly Hills Playhouse, and I LOVED the theater AND the production! The production: Every single actor in this production had their own unique personality and brilliant presence onstage. I laughed my butt off, and was touched by this multiple-scene dark comedy that totally represented real life. David Crane as the rabidly ranting main man, Audrey Moore's leading lady - who shows a wide range of emotions throughout the play, and both Jeremy Radin and Retta Sirleaf as the F***ING HILARIOUS friends were all AWESOME! I particularly loved how the title was mirrored in more than just the traditional meaning. Engagement has been extended til September and hopefully through October, so get here to see it! On to the theater: I love the multitude of small playhouses in the area, but let's face it - some of them are on a shoestring budget and the (sometimes lumpy, sometimes hard) seats show it - as does some of the props and decor. It does not take away from ANY of the entertainment value of the shows or the pleasure of the experience at all - however it makes me appreciate theaters like this one EVEN MORE. This theater has plush cushy seats, refreshing air conditioning, what I assume is high-quality stage lighting, and overall a very nice space! I hear they have acting classes here too - I can't imagine a nicer space to be in. From the names on the donor list and plaques that adorn the lovely fountain outside the theater, there are some talented and well-known supporters of this space - like Ed Asner, Tyne Daly, Peter Boyle, Alec Baldwin, John Glover and Doris Roberts - which is awesome! Plus they have a complimentary dessert or appetizer offer from Louise's Trattoria inside their program - I'm totally going to use this because they have Sweet Lady Jane red velvet and hummingbird cake slices there!!!! I'm a fan of small theaters all over L.A. - but this one might just be on the top of my list now : ). read more

Hold up. You mean to say that the last couple times I went to see their shows, they were just "acting"?! Stop, just stop..... The characters they played exuded perfect emotions and with such intensity, that you'd think it was the real thing. Clearly, these students are well beyond gifted, as their talent sold me and probably everyone else in the audience. There were difficult scenes with difficult accents, and they easily nailed those components 100%. Their levels of acting were superb, entertaining and worth the trip to go. My friends and I were NOT disappointed, as standing ovation was well-deserved. Oh, and one more thing--their customer service was super OP! From the second you walked in, the hospitality was genuine, the greeting was warm and the room was very clean. You can tell how much they take in what they do, on-stage and behind-the-scenes. If you haven't seen a show yet--go go go, like right now. And bring a squad so that the hand-clapping will shake the walls. Bravo to you BHP for a wonderfully-run machine!! With an incredible alumni, a beautiful, spacious, clean environment, and Exception, caring and wonderful curriculum! This school is not for the lazy or for people looking for a hobby. Next year I will be in the Master Class of actors for about 20 Years! This review is just for the theater. I came to this playhouse more than a year ago the first time to watch Rabbit Hole. My second time was just last weekend, to see "Engagement". This is a small playhouse - you could easily miss it if you're not observant or if you don't read address numbers. Down the small alley is the box office and a few steps further is the theater. This theater is not very large - about 100 seats. It's clean, easy to access, and the staff are very courteous. We picked up tickets via will call and headed into the theater, front and center; our play started a few minutes later than expected, but it was still in good timing. I'd recommend this theater if you prefer a more intimate setting rather than a huge venue. It's def a more personal experience. read more

While many actors find it difficult to take a night out of their weekly schedule to take classes, meeting twice a week was the highlight of my week. Since starting classes, I've met and collaborated with many students in my class to help bring so much content to life. In my 28 and a half years in this life I can embarrassingly say that I have never been to a "playhouse" or small theater. For the last 4 years I have been surrounded by many in the arts who perform at these quaint venues. I was invited by a fellow coworker and dear friend whom he always refers to me as "his boss" which in reality I am but i don't see it that way. Long story short, David Crane who plays Mark in the play told me about it and since I have missed his other performances in the past I made it appoint to get to Engagement. So not ever being to a playhouse I had no idea what to expect or what to compare it to. Beverly Hills Playhouse made a great first impression on me. Plenty of street parking (we went on a Sunday). Bright sidewalk signage announcing Engagement so we knew we were in the right spot. As you enter the inviting outdoor corridor area to your left is a display with photos from the play as well as cast head shots. You then check in to the right and you are then all squared away to enter the theater. First, I could not believe how small it was (Lucy Y. assured me that it was a larger one as she says she has been to some that were half the size). There was 4 rows of seats with probably a max capacity in the 50's (maybe). Seats were super comfy and cushiony. The stage is good size and you really get a good view from all seats. Great lighting and great sound and working AC! Restrooms are available up the stairs then down the stairs. Engagement the play itself was awesome. Highs and lows, tears, reality checks, social and political jabs and much laughter. The cast was spectacular and they played really well off each other. We went on the night when the cast played as such Mark: David Crane (holla!) Nicole: Audrey Moore Dennis: Jeremy Radin Rachel: Retta Sirleaf I can officially say I am a fan of theater! Thanks to BH Playhouse and the cast and crew of Engagement. A little HOLLA at my man! David "Wayne" Crane- if you are not proud of yourself well you should be. I know my opinion means nothing in your life endeavors but I want you to know that I am proud of you. I am proud to say I know you and call you a friend. It was amazing to see you perform. Since I have known you, I have known that acting and writing is your true passion and it showed tonight in this performance and it was incredible to see you at your craft. You were so good I had no reason to throw heirloom tomatoes at you. Your name will be big in lights one day my friend. This used to be the best place in town, or in the world of to study acting. Milton was fantastic and encouraged people to get acting jobs in the industry. Now the teachers encourage doing really shitty self projects that nobody will ever watch but their relatives. It's full of people who spend their time gossiping about others. It's used to be that you could be in advanced class unless you were a named working actor, now people that barely got their SAG card are enrolled in advanced class (not because of their talent). I moved from NYC eight years ago with a good deal of formal training and found this school. The instruction I received in all elements of the craft (and business side) of acting was instrumental in launching my career. The unique methods taught encompassed all elements and types of training, I never felt once that they would try to coerce me into using any specific techniques that I felt didn't work for me or not understand the ones I chose to use. It is a place to master your craft and be surrounded by others who are equally serious about their careers and who work regularly as actors. I felt continually inspired and motivated while studying there. While there are many good acting schools out there? I could not recommend this one more highly as it is the only one I'm aware of that teaches and motivates you on the business end of your career as well as the artistic side. read more

Not only do they teach scene study, but also about the business side of an actor which people don't seem to think about. Super positive environment and extremely talented actors all around. I studied at BHP for about 6 months. The students and teachers are supportive and will push you toward the business of acting which is good. Allen Barton writes a wonderful blog on acting...a real gem. What I didn't care for was the clapping and catcalls after EVERY scene. Just seemed wierd and forced like most of the scene work. Maybe I'm spoiled after studying "The Method." There was no exercise or exploratory work, only scenes so I'm not sure how a beginner can develop a workable technique. read more

I went to see the play Yellow Face. The cast studies at BHP really paid off as the acting was superb! You really felt immersed in the emotion and energy of the scenes. The actors painted a picture well beyond the stage. The actors did several different accents which I know are highly difficult to pull off, and really showed their range. Love BHP because it taught me the power actors have to control your own careers! This school is all about hustling for yourself and getting "admin" done. "Admin" is basically what you've done on the business side to move your acting career forward. I meet every Thursday with my work group of other BHP actors where we discuss what we've done the past week on the admin side. If you know nothing about how to do this, the school gives you a great to-do list to jump start your career. Also, hearing the other students talk about what they did to grow their careers is both informative and motivates you to work harder. I was invited to see Project X, a fully staged production, in this case of two one act plays and am glad I made the trip. The acting was phenomenal and cohesive. It was professional calibre and funny and heart breaking at the same time. Because it is an acting school there was an opportunity for the audience to ask questions of the cast after the show. I've studied at BHP for 3 years and grew a lot as an actor. I love all the teachers and have had the privilege to study with 3 other teachers during my time at BHP. Although all the teachers I've worked with have taught me so much one particular teacher really helped elevated the next level for me and that's Leila. It was really helpful to have a woman teacher and her perspective in helping me to better clarify my characters point of view and not be afraid to own it.
