Tom was super helpful. He recommended wide shoes and also helped measure my shoe size since it can be different for wide shoes, and it totally was. The shoes were reasonably priced and comparable to anything you can find online. But you can't beat a personalized shopping experience with Tom, who helped explain what different brands offer shoe-wise and also measured my feet to be sure. Tom is a true gem and it's always awesome to support a local business with owners like him who have a true passion for what they do. He used to own a bigger store downstairs but during the pandemic, his business suffered and now he's upstairs but still clearly knows all of his tennis stuff. I would definitely come back to support his business whenever I need tennis gear. The only downside is that parking is street parking and you do have to pay for it.

My wife and I recently got back into tennis after watching the US Open. Through Yelp, we found Montclair Sports offered restringing services and I am beyond satisfied with my experience working with Tom. To start, Tom is a seasoned professional in his craft, with over 50 years of experience. We brought over our two beaten up rackets to the shop and Tom walked us through his recommendations for the rackets. We ended up going forward with restringing only one of the rackets, but we actually purchased a new Babolat racket there on the spot. Turns out, the racket my wife had been using her whole life was completely the wrong size! At no time during the racket shopping process did we ever feel like Tom was trying to upsell us. He patiently answered all our questions and I trusted Tom's guidance in every step of the process. Honestly, you won't find a nicer guy in the business; I cannot recommend his services enough.

I've been wanting to do it for a long time, and finally called up Ino and a dozen sessions later--some with him, some on my own--over the course of a few months I had the basics down. Ino is patient and encouraging through the entire journey. He teaches by showing you and then observing you and he does this like any great teacher would. He's also had very spot-on recommendations on gear and has a great source for it that shipped it really fast. I've been super happy with having the right equipment to work with very soon. Lastly, he's got all the latest gadgets, from Go Pro camera, to the helmet radio that he can coach you through while you're on the water. After each session he sends cool snapshots or video clips of your latest achievements. My text thread with him is like a photo diary of my kiting progression. Moreover, there is a whole social factor when studying with Ino. He's got a stellar reputation and has generations of students around the East Bay that you'll inevitably bump into sooner or later, or he'll introduce you outright. Sometimes he points them out to you on the water, just by the color of their kite and their style. So you don't just get a series of lessons, you get a warm introduction to the whole local community.

The adult drop in class packages work best for me and I've been consistently attending Sam (primarily silks and lyra) and Megan's (trapeze) classes. I called the front desk to make my initial purchase because there were so many options, I couldn't decide what I wanted based on my schedule. Fortunately, Janelle (front desk) was very patient and helpful, and I ended up getting the 10 class pack. When I got there, it was a bit intimidating because I was more used to smaller studios, but everyone here was so nice. Janell also made sure to check on me to see if I was doing ok when I took my first class. The other students and teachers were very welcoming and supportive to check out other classes, which is how I ended up with taking two classes back to back at-least once a week instead of just one class. In regards to the teachers, "great" would be such an understatement. I love Sam's class because even though it's primarily silks, they'll put one other apparatus (hoop mainly, and recently flying pole!) for us to try out-so it's more than just one apparatus in this one class. I also really like that they'll give us challenging *enough* moves because it's so satisfying to execute steps after struggling so much for it. I also love Megan's trapeze class because she's very flexible with our experiences. This pace is great for me because I don't have alot of experience with trapeze and the ropes on it feel so different from silks! Nikki and Zi have substituted for their classes and they're both amazing as well. I'd highly recommend taking classes here. It's a fun and challenging workout compared to a regular gym...I also love that it's spacious too!

Oakland Ice Center is a great spot for ice skating!…read more I was in town and my friend takes lessons here so she brought us during one of the public open-skate times to practice and also for us all to skate since my partner and I LOVE ice skating. We went during the day and it wasn't too crowded. There was just a kid's birthday party and a few other skaters for a bit so it was nice. For birthday parties, they separate part of the rink, which might not be the best for public skate but I think is super cool! Back at my home rink, the parties kind of skate with everyone and it gets a bit rough, especially during crowded times. For beginner skaters, they have both the seal/dolphins(?) that you can use to skate and even stacks of buckets, which I think is genius, to adjust to height. It was easy to pay for a public skate session and grab rentals. The rink is a good size and layout was pretty cool. The skate shop was okay. Overall, a cute ice rink in Oakland!

We play at the Chabot courts, and though I wish the city of Oakland would update their booking system, we always get a court and it's only $10/hr. I would recommend Fred as a coach to anyone getting started or looking to sharpen their skills. He has a great eye for even small errors that I make and gives great advice for correction- I felt a huge improvement after just 4 lessons with Fred. We have a great time, and I'm also becoming a much better player than I had expected to be in just the 5 months that we've been working together.

While I wasn't afraid of pools or the ocean, I'd drown if I found myself in deep water without a life vest. I decided to finally take the plunge and learn in my 30s, and I'm so glad I found Woody! At the time, she was offering lessons in Oakland, and I chose her because it was in my neighborhood. Although the 1:1 lessons were a bit pricey for my budget at the time, they were worth it! After a few months of lessons, I was able to get past the mental barrier I had around deep water and finally learned how to tread water. Beyond that, Woody equipped me with numerous skills and techniques to feel confident and comfortable in the water. Let me tell you, learning to swim as an adult is no easy feat, but having a fantastic instructor makes all the difference. I highly recommend Woody for swim lessons! Thank you, Woody!

She didn't want to start swim lessons. We wanted the peace of mind that she knew how to swim so we joined the wait list and started as soon as we could. We told her it is a life lesson and she had to do it and thankfully she agreed. Our daughter isn't quick to trust or warm up. I was a little concerned that the teachers wouldn't respect her shyness That was not the case at all. The coaches are all respectful, kind and professional. Now she knows how to swim and more! She says "Tennis with Coach Sammy is SOOO fun!" In the hour lesson Coach Sammy keeps students focused and engaged with fun practice games and switching between skills and activities (rallies, serving, footwork, etc). His coaching style is extremely effective and the lessons are truly worth every penny and more. He uses every minute of the lesson effectively and jam packs the hour with instruction, practice and skill building games. My daughter is tired in the best possible way by the end! Coach Sammy is kind, knowledgeable and flexible and adapts his teaching and lesson to each student. Most importantly, Coach Sammy is incredibly patient which is necessary when working with young learners.
