The real clincher is that Barbara Ann's creations are a reflection of her in flour form -- sweet and wonderful.

Ok, but a little disappointing. It must be difficult running a business like this and building a…read morefollowing. I got inspired by watching youtube to make a jambon buerre sandwich - supposedly a popular quick sandwich for Parisians. The sandwich is half a baguette with butter and French bistro ham. I tried searching all over for the French bistro ham with no luck. The only options were online sources with expensive shipping and/or expensive minimum order sizes. Somehow I stumbled upon MA-France nearby in Arlington and they sell jambon-buerre sandwiches. It's a small shop that sells sandwiches, pastries, and a small offering of French food products. Lots of pastries and baked goods like quiche, tarts, cookies, croissants, etc. The cheese offerings were very limited and basic. I can imagine that the cheeses that they sell are the same types and brands that they use for making sandwiches. For example, they sell President brand Brie - that you can also buy at Costco and market basket. Disappointing, but understandable because they can't afford to buy more variety and more expensive offerings without a big enough client base to buy those cheeses before they go bad. Getting back to the sandwich - it was half a baguette with some thick slices of butter and two pieces of French bistro ham. The bread was kind of dense and the crust was more chewy than crispy. I was disappointed that they didn't bother to spread the butter, but if they're not selling enough sandwiches then they're probably keeping the butter in the refrigerator - making it too difficult to spread. When I got home I fixed up the sandwich to my liking. Overall, the sandwich was okay, but not good enough to make me want to go back. At least I was able to solve my hunger for the jambon buerre sandwich.

Now it's quite underwhelming. The apricot croissant is now some smaller glorified danish that has no richness or personality. The plain croissant is quite "bready" now, whereas it used to be light and buttery. I have a sneaking suspicion that they have a different croissant supplier now. What saved this spot from a lower grade is that the pain au raisin and chausson aux pommes are passable. Also a save is that they still offer various French products, from soaps to cheeses to canned goods. I have to find a new French bakery in the area.

They are open Sunday, Wednesday, snd Friday, and you can order in advance if you want. They offer many of the same baked goods each day, but they also have some items that are only available on certain days of the week. For example, baguettes and sesame sandwich rolls and ham sandwiches on Wednesdays. They also bake special items for lots of different holidays, now they have hamantaschen for Purim. The croissants are laminated beautifully and buttery and light but not greasy. I'm also a fan of their curried chickpea handpies, wacky cake (chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and sprinkles for such a reasonable price). Their pies are outstanding. Basically anything you try will be delicious. The owners snd staff are all friendly and accommodating. You don't go inside the bakery. Instead you order from outside and get your order at a window. This is quick and convenient. There is a pretty menu of the items available in the window of the store. This is my favorite bakery in the greater Boston area and I'm lucky that it's near my home.

I brought my daughter after she had a bad day at school and just wanted a slice of cake. The owner was super nice. I had questions about custom cakes and we chatted for a minute, and she showed me some of her inspiration photos. I also ordered the Greek rice pudding for my son. He had MCAS today so he deserved a treat. I got a spoonful and it was excellent. The only drawbacks to this place are there is nowhere to sit, and prices are not marked in the case. There are benches outside, though, for when the weather is nice. And maybe farther down the road from the pandemic the owner could remove some of the fixtures and add seating. But I would recommend adding pricing to the cases to those on a fixed budget.

The gateway drug cookie for me was the Mocha Shortbread cookies, which I first found at Pemberton Market in Cambridge, and then noticed for sale lots of places around town. But when I found the mother ship it was all over. It's a good thing I no longer live in Arlington, or I would be in serious trouble. The variety of cookies is remarkable--linzer, tuxedo, florentine, shortbread, ginger, chocolate chip of course, butter cookies dipped in dark or white chocolate, you really need to look at the website to get the full appreciation of the creativity that goes into these cookies. There are always seasonal cookies on offer -- last month Christmas, now heading into Valentine's Day and soon Easter. The cookies are always moist and fresh, and you'd better plan to get there early in the day if you want your pick. I learned this the hard way when I sashayed into the store an hour before closing, mouth watering for my absolute favorite (now), the Toffee Turtle cookie. Those babies were long gone, so I had to "settle" for the next tier of favorites. In fact a few of those were gone as well. That'll teach me. Order early if you want an assortment to take as a hostess gift... you'll be sure to be invited back often as these cookies are showstoppers!

There is a good amount of seating in the store and free water for customers to fill themselves which I always love. The Bacon Egg and Cheese was a wise decision and priced very very well, I would definitely recommend that! My favorite sweet was the strawberry tea cake, top class that was. The donut and banana bread were also very tasty but I didn't get to eat enough of them to feel as strongly about them as I do the strawberry tea cake. I think it's assume you can't go wrong with anything you can purchase from Butternut Bakehouse,... Enjoy! The ambiance was full of energy with friendly staff and happy customers.
