Went to get GF for my water aerobic instructor s Bday and had difficult time to find as signage poor. Got into store and no one there and had to call the phone # for service. I know they re concentration is on large order but maybe a bell to ring for service? I asked for cupcakes and said would put them together in 10 mins. I ordered and placed in a 6 container with only 2 in them and 4 empty. Wanted to walk out but already paid $8 for 2 cupcakes about the size of a half dollar. Too small to put Happy Birthday on them. I spent hours looking at options for a birthday cake - I wanted something a step up from a grocery store but not so fancy that I'd break the bank. I found out about The Danish Pastry House on Reddit, and one look at their website immediately sold me. I ordered a 6-inch Prinsesstårta (princess cake) for pickup. I mistakenly got their Saturday hours wrong, but when I called, someone agreed to wait for me 30 minutes past close - incredible service, as far as I'm concerned. The cake was gorgeous and so delicious! The marzipan went so well with the layers of moist cake, Bavarian cream, and raspberry jam. Truly a one-of-a-kind choice for a birthday cake that did not disappoint. I can't believe I have to wait a whole year for my birthday to come back around! I work nearby and we come here all the time to get desserts! Everything is delicious and I've also ordered cupcakes for events ($3 each). The fruit tarts are my favorite item here. The custard is amazing and they make the tarts look gorgeous. This place is tucked away behind a bunch of industrial buildings so it's a little hard to find. If you are in Watertown it's a good spot to pick up treats for the the office. read more

Really awesome place that has a wide variety of pastries. Their crusts are usually quite flaky, and the pastries are usually filled with decent sweets. The location is a little bit tough to find, and a little bit hard to get you without a car, but if you can get there it's worth it! The Black Forest cake I ordered was nowhere like the authentic black Forest cake. Unfortunately, it didn't have the cherries but instead just some cherry preserve or jam. I ordered it for a special occasion having waited one whole year before I could order this cake and was looking forward to it. Looks like Germany is the best place to have a slice of the Black Forest cake because it's been impossible to find them by the slice here and this cake was quite disappointing. Too much hassle just to get a slice of my fav dessert. The other bakery item I picked up from this bakery was very delicious though. read more

I have been a delighted customer for many years. I ordered a dozen of their delicious French waffle cookies, for a special occasion. Once home with them, I decided to enjoy one. I found they were lacking the lovely fruit jam, and didn't taste quite right. I spoke with Dirkin, the owner, who was upset that the cookies were less than they should be. He offered to make and deliver a fresh batch the next day. I accepted the offer of another batch, picked them up, and they were as excellent as they had always been. One of the most unique cookies. Guests always think they are wonderful.., as they are! Dirkin's integrity and pride in his products and service, is remarkable. Street parking is adequate but the place is not where you'd expect it to be. It is kind of hidden. Ordered an 8 inch cake (lemon luscious) for next day pick up. Next day, picked it up and cake looked perfect and presented very well. The same day, coming time to cut the cake, the cake still looks perfect out of the fridge. ...until cake cutting time. During the cutting, we realized the icing on the cake was hard and during the cutting, the icing layer was "cracking" and the entire cake was crumbling as cutting. The icing was all for looks. It wasnt soft and creamy as one would expect for icing and it did not adhere well to the insides of the cake which caused the entire cake to crumble during cutting. So everyone ended up getting crumbles of cake rather than slices. Not something you'd expect for a $45 cake. Tasting. Again, the icing is a weird texture and should be switched to a soft and creamier type. Since the icing cracklings easily "peeled off" the cake, I had to have the icing separately from the insides of the cake. The icing does not taste better than it holds up. The quality of icing is what you would expect from a stop and shop cake. The insides of the cake was good but not out of the ordinary. Overall, not impressed. I'd recommend heading to cambridge's hmart for cakes. The cakes from its tous les jour bakery is much better at a slightly cheaper price as I recall. read more

I haven't tried any of their daily pastries or menu items, so this is mainly on a review of their cakes and service during Covid-19. They have a wonderful selection of unique cakes, and hard to find flavors. The princess cake is absolutely phenomenal (first saw it on the great british baking show and I knew I had to find a local bakery that made it). The sponge is really light and airy and the bavarian cream is divine. They decorate the cakes so elegantly, and they look perfect every time. You have to order the cakes ahead of time, and I've never run into any issues. They don't have online ordering up and running I don't think, so I've called and placed my order each time. I think need at least 48 hours for the cakes. I've also had the passionfruit cake from here which is phenomenal, and plan to try their Othello cake next. The prices are really affordable $30 for a 6" cake, and they are sooooo delicious. Parking can be a bit difficult, and it may be a bit hard to find if you've never been here before. read more

Be aware that the entrance is a door for the small Danish Pastry House retail outlet (not sure if they bake in the back) towards the side street back of the building. Luscious Lemon Cake ~ Our signature light vanilla layer cake with lemon mousse, topped in vanilla buttercream and decorated with fresh fruit Sounds good, don't it? I placed a call several days in advance to order one up - 6 inch, $20, pick up any time after 9am. Okie dokie! I got a call back on a Saturday hoping to zero in on when we'd be picking up the cake on Tuesday following - turns out their baker might have to start working on the cake on Saturday if we wanted to pick up on the early end of Tuesday. I guess their baker's weekend is Sunday/Monday? Fortunately pick up was going to be in the PM, so I guess we'll be getting a fresher cake. [According to the bakery owner: "we do have our cake bakers in every day of the week to make sure that everything is as fresh as possible" - I'm still confused by the exchange with the staff... but that's good] The cake was pretty! Stenciled with a simple floral decoration in cocoa powder, garnished with fresh raspberries, and the well wishes clearly piped on... not white chocolate planks, but marzipan! How neat & unexpected! The yellow buttercream frosting protecting the cake was a bit more, um, solid than expected and most of us didn't eat much of it even though it wasn't that sweet, but the cake was light, the lemon mousse light and tasty, and there were raspberries (previously frozen? nope, fresh according to the owner) scattered within as well. Nice! I might have to go back sometime to try their Othello Cake ~ Our vanilla cake batter is gently tempered with macaroon dough for depth. Covered in chocolate ganache and bordered with rolled marzipan. A fruit-&-cream garnish echoes the layers of Bavarian cream and raspberry jam inside FYI - they told me that there's parking out front, not in the loading dock, a parking lot also available around behind them. *** 3/2014 *** We ordered the 6 inch Othello cake for $25 and found it to be pretty, tasty, and not too sweet. read more

I've been meaning to write this review for a LONG time. DPH is my go to baker for everything! After using them as a vendor for my previous job in catering, I keep stopping by because I can't get enough. They've provided the cupcakes and the wedding cake for my wedding, the cake for my niece's baptism, my birthday cake (every year), and so much more. Their red velvet is fantastic but the passion fruit cake is to DIE for. If you manage to get passed the wonderful desserts, their breakfast pastries are delicious too! Although my diet doesn't agree with it, I could eat a whole chocolate snail in one sitting and STILL want a second one. Not to mention the staff are friendly and welcoming every time I stop in. The outside was beautifully decorated and the cake itself tasted unbelievably good-- perfect layers of cream, cake, marzipan and jam. The almond flavor was present throughout, but not in an overwhelming way. It was perfectly sweet and yummy, the best birthday cake I've ever had. Not only do they make my favorite cake, the Princess torte, but they were able to make a princess torte wedding cake. It was literally a dream come true. I have been a customer for several years and their pastries, cookies and cakes are excellent. I had a recent experience where I tried to place an order at their Watertown facility, but it was missed and I was told it was too late to obtain our favorite cake, the princess torte. Disappointed, I reached out to their Medford store but was again told it was too late. However, within 2 hours, I received a call from a manager stating they would personally ensure my missed order was filled - this, to me, says the owners and managers are invested in their customers' happiness, in addition to being excellent at their craft. So to my fellow Yelp readers, I would advise making sure you speak to a live person when you place an order and (in the interest of being constructive) I hope DPH will upgrade their online order intake system. read more

This place is amazing. Danish heaven. I've yet to have anything bad and since I live on their street I've been many many times. It's very small but full of choices. The left side has breafast items: muffins, scones, bagels, pastries, other things full of butter and sugar. My favorites on this side are the Kringle and Icing Snail. They have an array of breads on the back wall. I've never tried them they look a bit hard. I've had their sandwiches though and their homemade rolls are tasty. To the right are the cookies, marzipan and other candy-like things. They always have seasonal cookies. I like the Flobodelle, Coconut Macaroons, again nothing bad over here. The most heavenly section is the glass case. Divine cakes, torts, tarts, flans, many cream filled things. Do yourself a favor and visit this wonderful Danish Pastry House. read more

The Danish Pastry House is absolutely wonderful! I happened to be biking by on Arlington St. and saw a small brown sign that immediately caught my attention. The staff was super friendly, gave me some top notch recommendations and explained what all the different pastries were. I tried the Almond Kringle Slice - delicious. It's a nice flaky pastry with an almond paste filling and slivered almonds on top. Oh, if I added some cherries, I could fool myself into thinking it was flavored like disaronno amaretto! Apparently they also hit up around 10 farmers markets per week in the area, so keep on the lookout! I'm really glad I found this hidden gem and will definitely be going back to try something else! read more

The Danish Pastry House is a great bakery in Watertown, and I could see myself occasionally stopping here when I'm in the area. The pastries here are quite unique and tasty, but they lack that final "wow" factor that would raise this review to a 5. I've tried both the Almond Croissant and the Almond Kringle Slice. The Almond Croissant was buttery and well made, but the texture was a bit off - the outside didn't have that slight crisp that a perfect croissant would have and the pastry itself wasn't as flaky as I would have liked it. For comparison, the croissants at Clear Flour or Iggy's are much flakier/crispier (and consequently messier!). The Almond Kringle Slice was quite delightful - a bit too sweet for my liking but the rest of it was awesome. I would give the croissant a 4/5 and the Kringle a 4.5/5. This place is pretty small but there are a couple seats available for you to enjoy your treats. There are also free samples next to the fridge near the entrance for customers to try. read more

I live in the city but work in Watertown once a week. One day I took a Zipcar to work and wandered over for a sweet treat. I think I want to take a Zipcar to work every week! It's off the beaten path and I had to make a couple U-turns to find it but OMG!!!!! Get the French waffle and the hazelnut macaroon thing (think Nutella). Warning- you may need to consume them in private if you know what I mean. I can't decided which one I like better. They're both so different from what you can get at other bakeries. read more

Danish Pastry House's Passionfruit Cake is one of the best cakes I've ever had and I'm always looking for any sort of birthday/celebration excuse to order it. The icing is a vanilla buttercream, but somehow is still delightfully light and not overly sweet. I am not usually an icing fan and am known to wipe it off a cupcake or leave it on my plate, but I eat every bite of this cake. Note that the bakery is a bit hard to find as it's toward the back of a parking lot/warehouse looking building. A few summers ago, I spent a month staying in Norway and given my love for the foodstuffs of IKEA (meatballs! lingonberries!) I set out with some pretty high culinary expectations. Overall I wasn't disappointed, while I may have stifled a tear when my new Scandinavian friends offered me reindeer steak and I found myself contemplating which of us got Donner and which got Blitzen. But other than that incident, the highlight of the trip was being utterly spoiled by the discovery of the buttery, flaky goodness of their native pastry: kringle! So when I saw the non-descript brown sign advertising the Danish Pastry House as I drove through Watertown, I was curious enough to pull a last minute u-turn and brave the limited (read: virtually non-existent and sketchy) parking situation to check for this Nordic delight. Jackpot! In addition to kringle, they had muffins, scones, breads, bear claws, cakes, croissants and a variety of other mouth-watering baked goods. Thanks to some samples put out by the delightful staff, I tried bites of both the Almond Kringle and the Cinnamon Brioche Braid (think all the flaky goodness of the kringle but with cinnamon taking the lead instead of custard). They were both outrageous. It was the Sophie's Choice of baked goods! Follow my lead and just buy both. DPH also offers coffees/teas, a small case of cold beverages and a selection of sandwiches (given how amazing the bread smelled, I can't wait to try!) Note: it looks like in addition to this retail bakery location they have a café in Medford, offer catering, and hit up many of the local farmers markets in warm weather months! read more

I read an article recently in Travel+Leisure about how even the most decisive people can't make up their mind when looking at a restaurant menu. This is my quandary whenever I go into a bakery. Oh, the choices! So many things to try and so little waistline left to spare. Luckily, the staff at Danish Pastry House is there to help make up your mind for you. The lady working this morning recommended the "almond kringle" as my breakfast du jour and whilst I am generally not a huge almond fan I thought I may as well try it out; I mean she DOES sell these everyday. I also picked up a yellow cupcake with buttercream frosting and cherry topping to have after lunch. When I got to my office (turns out it is only a block away!) and took the first bite of that kringle I had to seriously talk myself out of going back to get another. It was THAT good. One of the best breakfast pastries I have EVER had! Perfect flaky dough with a generous amount of marzipan in the center, all sprinkled oh-so-delicately with shaved almonds. I actually called the bakery from my office to thank the girl for the recommendation; that's how happy I was! After lunch I dove into the cupcake, barely being able to control myself from getting to try another delectable treat from my new-found friend. The cake was moist and texturally pleasing. The frosting was very subtle in its sweetness for a buttercream but the cherry pie-filling-like topping added a good depth of flavour and brought the whole thing up to "just sweet enough". Also, it came in an uber-cool container that prevented any sort of movement; perfect for taking cupcakes to go without worrying that the frosting will get squished. It takes a team of specially trained military operatives to find this place but once you locate its whereabouts and taste one of their amazing pastries you will never forget how to get there. You have now reached your destination! Seriously, don't pass this place up. read more

Pastries are decent enough, but although it's called the Danish Pastry Shop, they don't really have anything Danish... As a Dane I found this frustrating & extremely misleading. Why call your pastry shop after something it is not...? Doesn't make any sense. Also, the employee I spoke to was not very helpful nor knowledgable & was frustrating to speak with. read more
